Mars Attacks! (1996,  PG-13)
Mars Attacks!
My relationship with this movie is like a bad boyfriend/girlfriend relationship. I started off hating it, then liked it, then loved it, and now am okay with it. With this film it seems like we keep breaking up, this time for good, and then getting back together again. All in all, disappointing, but lots of fun.

Resident Evil (2002,  R)
Resident Evil
When I saw this in the theater I was so excited. This was the first new zombie film I would see in the theater, because despite today's glut of zombie flicks, you'd have to go to Italy to see them in the theater then. Also, it was based on the super creepy video game that is easily my favourite game of all time.
And then I was given a Hollywood popcorn flick.
Well, time has past and I can view this without the high expectations I initially had and it's better than a lot out there. I still think it's too bad that they went the action/adventure route instead of the gory horror route though.

Easy Rider (1969,  R)
Easy Rider
When I first saw this, I loved Nicholsan of course, but I thought the movie was okay, nothing fabulous. However, after reading Biskind's Easy Riders and Raging Bulls I grew to appreciate this film a hell of a lot more, in fact now I love it.

Freddy vs. Jason (2003,  R)
Freddy vs. Jason
Hated this film with all my heart after seeing it in the theater. Where was all the fun? It was leaning way more towards NOES, with the angst ridden kids and Freddy being in every second scene. I've just never found him that scary or fun (I guess you're supposed to feel one of those emotions, I have no idea of his appeal). Plus, every script I had heard of sounded way more creative than this one. But then something happened, I saw it on TV when my expectations weren't high and I already knew what it was going to be, and I really liked it. I appreciated Yu's style more and more while watching it and found it fun and fast moving. I even really liked the Jason they had (though I've never really iiked Kane Hodder except in Jason X) and I didn't mind the NOES kiddies. I eat my words, this is a really good film.

Alien (1979,  R)
Alien
Every time I say this is my least favourite Alien film I risk getting punched in the face. In my defense, the first couple times I saw it was on a pan and scan VHS tape, and apparently a lot of the love for this film is in the visuals. Also, I found it to be a basic "pick them off one by one" movie that I'd seen hundreds of time before. Plus, the build up to the movie made me expect a much better payoff. And what the hell was that cat doing in the locker? Anyway, I totally understand why people love it, there's parts I think are amazing, but all in all I always tire of the film before the credits.
2008
I was wrong. I just finished watching the widescreen director's cut and was riveted. Of course everything looks better WS with a better transfer, but really, there is no comparison to the pan and scan VHS I had taped off TMN. In fact, how the hell did anyone like the pan and scan version to begin with? Anyway, I'm happy to finally appreciate what everyone else noticed before me; a truly great blend of sci fi and horror. And how the hell did the cat get in there?
