Movies I own
They aren't necessarily my favourites but many of them are watched many times. There ain't all, some Italian and many Mexican and Spanish films couldn't be found on the lists.

Tropic Thunder (2008, R)
War movies is not my kind of best film, Ben stiller's are not my best choice of comedy. But the film is good precisely because of that: it's a parody of war films and how male they are suppposed to be but at the end they are veery corny and silly. Ben Stiller is also mocking the movie bussiness and even himself. The cast is surprising and good. As usually, Robert Downey was the best. |

Across the Universe (2007, PG-13)
Although the music (which is the main hook) sometimes looses awfully the power of the original. Although the story is THE SAME we see in most of the young musicals (a young couple with a bunch of friends that struggle against the adversities) such as Moulin Roge, Hair, Rent... Although only a few actors from all the cast could really touch my heart with their cartoon performances. Although all that I liked the film. As happened with Frida (from the same director) the visual-sound trip you get into since the first credits of the film appear worth the expierience. There are some songs that fix perfectly with the story and are very well conceived but ther are other songs that could be removed. The story has nothing new to tell but it isn't boring at all. |

Niñas Mal (Charm School) (2007, Unrated)
I wanted to see it because I consider Sariñana the best mexican filmaker when we talk about light comedies. And yes, it entertains, but I think Niñas mal is his worst comedy. Sometimes I felt I was watching a disney tv movie. The characters are approached only by the surface, some gags are typicall and predictabel so as the end. But as I said, it's entertaining and has funny characters and situations. Higareda does the same she always does when she's on screen and I must say my surprise was Camila Sodi who is far from being magnificent but looks really good but phisycally and in talent regarding to the last time I saw her working. |

Das Leben der Anderen (The Lives of Others) (2006, R)
In my opinion this is one of those films the story is good but nothing surprising or special until the end starts to arrive. Is one of those films in which the good things come from the unexpected places: the unexpected characters, the unexpected ambiance of the EG, the unexpected comedy, drama and so on. |

Little Miss Sunshine (2006, R)
Since the fist time I saw the poster I knew I was going to love this film, unfortunately it had to pass a year so I can finally watch this jewel. My dearest Carell and Collette together, the music, the way the family gets together for the dream of Olive, the way we connect with the characters... It's the typicall kind of independen pseudo intellectual film with the difference I found heart on this. |

Dreamgirls (2006, PG-13)
A film made to make Beyoncee shine in all her physical splendor. But I liked it because the story is entertaining and the 60's ambientation is quite cool: The music was ok but not that catchy in my opinion as in Chicago for instance. |

La Science des Rêves (The Science of Sleep) (2006, R)
I loved the characters, the music, the dialogues and specially the crazy world of dreams-ideas shown on this film. This is the role I like the most from all Gael's films. Here he sings, plays the piano, the drums and speaks in three laguages. Michael Gondry disappointed me on his earlier films but with this one, he's the man again. |

Marie Antoinette (2006, PG-13)
Since the credits I started to have spasms, great mix of contemporary music and detailed ambientation of the age, great cast, a very youthful way of showing an historical character. I don't know what else to say, it's the film I've enjoyed the most in many many time. |

Shortbus (2006, Unrated)
I've always wanted to know about a film in which sex were shown in a bare, real (wich means not fake) way without being pornography, this film is not precisely that one but it gets close to that idea. Of course the main topic is sex, but not by itself, it's the story of the characters and thier psychology the main focus and not the scenes. That was the thing I liked, you can get involved with the film even if we delete the porn parts, (but it's good they are not) so you don't get the idea that the story is just as a secondary part in order to make a film with lots of people "fornicatin'". |

Pride and Prejudice (2005, PG)
I am a B. Jones fan so when I saw the similarities between both films I was very happy. This story is much more romantic and of course the manners and the beliefs of that age make the film very entertainig for those who are in love with those ages. Keira is great on this, but many of the support actors take over the scene many times. |

C.R.A.Z.Y. (Crazy) (2005, Unrated)
The kind of stories about difficult topics and intense dramas but told as if it were a fairytale. I was captivated since the beggining, I never tought the Pink Floyd-Rolling Stones-David Bowie-Patsy Clyne-soundtrack would be as powerful as it is on this film (it's not the best thing of it but it's the only one I dare to talk about righ now). |

Efectos secundarios (2006, Unrated)
This film has great moments such as when Zoe performs Side Effects or Chetes & Amaral do the same with Si tu no vuelves. But the good things on the film go to hell when we listen some "philosophical speeches" that seem to come from those silly and corny mails with Power Point illustrated with puppies and flowers. Anyway, I identified myself with the four main characters and loved the film. |

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005, PG)
When I was a child, I saw Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory and I didn't like it. It had to come beloved Tim Burton to make me love the story, but specially the wonderful world their characters always live in. In this case I was delighted with the grandparents and the Oompa-Loompas, who sang a silly and happy song after a very cruel or kinda perverse moment... Wow. |

A Good Woman (2006, PG)
At the beggining I found it like a Hallmark movie (and I don't like them) and maybe I stil believe it, but Wilde's pen has such a great witt and heart that the film is great because of that. I don't care if it's greatly settled on the beautiful Italy of the early 30's, each dialogue and the whole story makethe movie worthy (specially if you like comedy perfectly mixed with romance and drama). |

The Life (Yo puta)(I, Whore) (2004, R)
The fiction part is awful. I mean, it is the so called story of a pure, innocent, smart girl that has to get into the "disgusting" bussiness of sex. On the other hand we have the true heart of the film: the inteviews; people involved on the prostituition talk about it. There we have many points of view, many discussions and the director desn't want us to have a lesson or something. That's what I liked: there's only the facts and the opinions without make an apologize neither a condemn of prostitution. By showing the facts, good or bad we can form a personal opinion. The edition makes the interviews more dynamical and less boring and the the directors follows a logic order. |

Bridget Jones - The Edge of Reason (2004, R)
The second part is not better than the first one, but looking at it well, is not worse either, the problem is that it was inecesarry, but it has the same "wit" of Bridget, the same good soundtrack the same reunions with her friends, the same funny situations and the same fight on a public place between the two guys. |

Lost In Translation (2003, R)
I love Japan. I really connected with the main characters. It's a story that has that elegant way of showing the world and being fresh and new at the same time. The couple isn't perfect, both are married with someone else in the first place. But their relationship altough never "consumed", at least in the Hollyood way, is full of tenderness and melancholy. Melancolía o como se diga en inglés, es lo que me transmitió esta película cuando la vi por primera vez, y unas ganas grades de conocer Japón, aunque sienta la misma soledad que sienten los protagonistas en la primera parte de la película. |

Lucia, Lucia (La Hija del caníbal) (2003, R)
It's ok, but a little disappointing. It's director is the creator of Sex, Shame and Tears, and this film is far from have the same "heart", it is also far from being as good as the book is based in. It's entertaining anyway and it's a journey through self-knowledge that can be useful for some people in some specific time in their lifes. |

About a Boy (2002, PG-13)
I don't care if I see it until learn the whoe script, good actors, good dialogues (specially the inner thoughts) and it makes me laught (which is hard to do lately). |

Entre tinieblas (Dark Habits) (Dark Hideout) (1983, Unrated)
Nunsexdrogsrock I Love nuns films, they can be as camp as "The Sound of Music" or as horrid as "Alucarda", this film is a mix of them. Before growing old and being mature ("Talk to Her") Almodovar made films in wich scandal themes were always an ingredient often treated like if there were the most common and natural thing. And of course, my favourite part is when Yolanda Bell sings "Salí porque salí". |

The Crying Game (1992, R)
A story of surprises. The fist part of the film is a falsehood, and some others are the ones that make this film famous. But surprises aren't the things that make this film great. The vision of a good man. That's what I think about when the Crying Game comes to my mind. |

The Deer Hunter (1978, R)
I've already mentioned how annoying are to me war movies. In this case, The almost 3 hour drama The Deer Hunter was again a happy exception. Although it deals with the horror of the war and its secuels, the story dives much more into the life before and after the war instad of the fool glory and heroic dimensions of fighting against other human beings. The Characters are great as much as the way Cimino envolves us into their world just by putting us in the middle of the places they live in, the things they eat and drink, the songs they sing et al. OH, but yes, the last song I really don't find it appropiate (and I know which one is). |
|
| 75 |
Suspiria (1977, R)
Now this is real genius to make horror films. Totally sensorial, the force of this film lies not as much as in the plot or the actors as in the sound and vision. Argento forgets the way we usually see the light and dive us into a claustrophobic world of bright colors and nightmare's sounds. The characters are drawn as if they were part of a fairytale (is a witche's story) but instead of making the story too unreal or childish, the "who's the murderer" line helps to avoid that unrealistic view (but only a little). |

Annie Hall (1977, PG)
Since the first time I had an encounter with Allen's work I remember it didn't like me. Later, as I was finding out who was who in the movie's world, I was exceptical about the genius it was said (and it is still said) he was: I wactched some of his films such as Bananas and the trailer of some of others and I didn't liked it at all. That and the fact of Soon Yi (Mia Farrow IT liked me) kept me away from watching his work. It was with Matchpoint that I completely changed my opinion so now I blindly bought Annie Hall. |
|
| 77 |
The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975, R)
All it's songs, the whole castle are praised by me. The only think I dislike it's the final part, the strory starts to vanish and we just see a sweet transvestite playing the fool with other 5 weirdos in baby doll. Cuando la vi tuve una especie de "revelación" jajajaja. Nunca creí que el cine musical podría ser tan anti-cursi e irreverente. |

Viva Maria (1965, Unrated)
It isn't a realistic movie at all, it's all about fantasy and revolution. The 60's French sense of humor is shown on this film and the sexiness that we aren't used to see on western films can be enjoyed here with the beauty of Bardot and Moreau. I like it for de songs, the black humor and the personality of the girls. |

OH! The film lasts almost three hours and it hasn't a real story, it's just like a situation, but I was just amazed of this world Fellini puts us on. These great pictures we see, the outrageous people that appears at the parties, the restaurants, the castles. I definetly regret not to have an equivalent of a film like this nowadays. |

Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (1958, Unrated)
Practically the story takes place in a house, mostly in a bedroom, with six characters and in one afternoon. Too simple? It's great, each dialogue each performance and the ravishing beauty of Taylor and Newman... I can watch it hundred times. |
