Stephen King's The Stand (,  Unrated)
Stephen King's The Stand
Making a movie out of a Stephen King book is usually a recipe for disaster. The fact that they made this movie for television and therefore did not have to fit the whole book into 2 hours was genius. Sure, there are still a lot of subtleties that are missing, but the main gist of the story and the soul of the huge cast of characters is still there. You can tell King had a lot to say on the casting of the characters, the cast was spot on. And for those who stay away from anything Stephen King because they think he's all about horror, watch this movie and you'll change your mind. Wonderful!

Pulls you in from the very first scene, and you won't stop tapping your foot. It's wonderful to see John C Reilly in this film, it seems that man can play any part and make it his.

Very good movie. Not what the previews made it seem. I thought it would almost be a romance with some action thrown in. Instead it was action with a tiny bit of romance thrown in. Pleasantly suprised, did not expect to enjoy the movie so much. Paula Patton did well, interested to see her in more in the future. Definately worth two hours of your time.

Wonderful cinematography. The colors and angles added so much to this film. Worth spending the money to see it on the big screen. Not much dialogue, but what dialogue there is makes an impact. This movie is great for men and women both. And although I'm a huge fan of Gerry Butler, I was pleasantly suprised at what a wonderful job David Wenham did. His role went a long way toward making this film a success.

This movie did not live up to the hype it received. The acting was great, and not just from Heath and Jake. All of the supporting players really did an awesome job. But I felt that if you're going to tell a love story, then tell it. This movie may have broken through a lot of boundries, but I don't feel it went as far as it should have gone. If this was a love story between a man and a woman we would have seen a lot more interplay between the main characters. And I'm not talking about sex. I'm talking dialogue, some 'I love you" action. It's definately worth seeing this movie though, at least for the awesome acting.

Cute and predictable. It really made me smile on a long, tiring day though. Katherine Heigl was wonderful, she really showed her joy and pain in her facial expressions. And why isn't James Marsden a bigger star? He's a good actor and he's GORGEOUS! It's worth seeing this film just to watch him! But seriously, worth a couple hours of your time.

Amy Adams was perfect for the innocent naive princess. She made you believe she really didn't see the bad things in the world. It would have been nice to see a little more of the evil step-mother in the "real" world, it's a shame to waste the talents of Susan Sarandon on such a small role. She must have had fun though. Everyone really did a wonderful job, but Amy Adams was the stand out in the crowd. This is a great family or date movie.

Cute, fluffy, feel-good movie. What you would expect for your typical "chick flick". But it seems like it could have been so much more. Almost like they left some major plot point(s) out. Kate almost touched on certain feelings and past events with her therapist more than once, and I waited the whole movie to see what those things were...but that part of the plot was never touched on again. And they had an awesome little actress with Abigail Breslin and did not use her to her full potential. She was great in her role, but they could have given her more and she would have done even better. This is a good date night movie, but don't go in expecting anything too deep. Although there are a couple parts that brought me to tears, that doesn't mean it's deep.

Alvin and the Chipmunks (2007,  PG)
Alvin and the Chipmunks
It pains me to not be able to rate this movie any higher. I love Jason Lee and I grew up watching the chipmunks. But it seemed to me that Jason Lee had a hard time getting into character, which I can understand since he was talking to air when he filmed his scenes with the chipmunks. I definately thought there was potential, but somehow it all fell flat. And I couldn't help but wonder why some "known" names were used as the voices of the chipmunks when 1. you couldn't tell by the voices and 2. they weren't even used in the marketing of the movie. That seems like putting an unnecessary whole in the overall budget of the movie. It was cute, kids will like it..but the older you are the less you'll like it I feel.

Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium (2007,  G)
Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium
Better than I expected. Maybe because I went in thinking it wouldn't be too good, I was instead somewhat blown away. I love the magic of it all. And how the main characters speak so literally when anyone asks them a question. Those moments made me laugh. You can't go in to this movie thinking you're going to see the best special effects or it's going to have some deep meaning. If you go in to be whisked away for about 2 hours to another world, then you will find this movie as joyous as I did.
196
Nancy Drew (2007,  PG)
Nancy Drew
It's always so refreshing to see Emma Roberts in a movie. Maybe because we don't get bomarded with her in the tabloids like some other young hollywod girls. They could take lessons from her. She's beautiful, a wonderful actress and really seems to have a good head on her shoulders. I grew up reading Nancy Drew books. I like how they stayed somewhat true to character yet modernized the story. I wish it would have done better at the theater so they would maybe do a few more. Kind of telling of how movies are these days...my sons both made comments about the bad guys not having guns until the end! Hmmm, maybe they're onto something.

The Golden Compass (2007,  PG-13)
The Golden Compass
I'm glad I haven't read the book yet. I'm always disappointed in movies based on books when I read the book first. That being said, I thought it was great. The special effects with the daemons was great, as well as most of the polar bear scenes. Well casted and well acted. The child actors all did a wonderful job. As a side note, I went into it purposefully ignoring all the talk of anti-religion. In other words, not concentrating on the controversy. Let's face it people, it's a fictional movie. If it gives you joy and amazes your senses, then it's a good movie.
199
I Am Legend (2007,  PG-13)
I Am Legend
I've read a lot of mixed reviews on this film. First, let me say that I loved it. Sure the CGI wasn't great, but Will Smith was. Without giving too much away I have to say the scene with Sam turning, the scene at the video store and the scene when he shoots up the mannequin - he put in AWESOME performances. Of course the book is better, that's a given. the book is always better. So people using that as an excuse to say this is not a good movie don't know how to watch a movie with an open mind. I was on the edge of my seat the whole time. I must warn anyone with a heart problem, you probably shouldn't watch this movie. I heart was beating a mile a minute the whole time. I even yelled at the screen once! So if you can go into this film with an open mind, or if you haven't read the book, I say enjoy!

Be Kind Rewind
I would have loved for them to have made this movie a bit longer and built up the relationship between Danny Glover & Mia Farrow. As well as maybe giving us more back story on the relationship between Danny Glover & Mos Def. I have a feeling the studio execs had something to do with those shortcomings. But still, what a fun movie. Even my kids, who haven't seen half the movies they "sweded" were cracking up at the remakes. And although as a whole it was not a realistic movie, the bittersweet end was real. Unfortunately, that is how the world work these days. It was touching for the community to come together as one never the less. This is definately worth seeing, just could have been longer.

Definitely, Maybe (2008,  PG-13)
Definitely, Maybe
What a wonderful movie. Smart, funny, touching, insightful. Once again, Abigail Breslin shines. What is great about this movie is that it's not just a "chick flick". My husband also enjoyed it, laughing right along with me. Without giving too much away...Maya's help at the end was a bit too mature of an action for an 11 year old girl, or any child of any age whose parents are getting a divorce. But I still loved the ending. Perfect. Ryan Reynolds has really been proving that he's not just a college humor actor. He was believable as a dad, divorcee and man in true love. And the cherry on top of the sundae was Kevin Kline, what a treat.

What a wonderful story! Watching Nicholson go from a callous son of a bitch to a warm, caring man through the span of the movie was wonderful. And who doesn't love to just listening to Morgan Freeman's voice?! They made me really believe in the friendship that was developed. And the movie itself made me appreciate the people in my life and the love of my family. All people, men/women..young/old, will enjoy this movie. Oh, and the interaction between Nicholson and Sean Hayes was hilarous! That alone makes this movie worth watching.
215
Strange Wilderness (2008,  R)
Strange Wilderness
I love Steve Zahn and Justin Long, and there were parts of this movie that were hilarious...it just didn't do it for me though. It's almost as if I feel they were all TRYING too hard to be funny. Like you could see the punch-line coming because of their body language or something. And there's a scene toward the end (right before they get out of the wilderness) that I really didn't like at all. I don't want to give the end away, but you'll know what I mean if you see it. They could have ended that part soooo much better. It got a chuckle, but that was it. So 2.5 stars for a movie that had the potential to be a 4 star movie. Watch it if you're bored I guess.
