The Hobbit (1977,  Unrated)
The Hobbit 4.0 Stars
"You can still turn back, you know. But to go on, to take those steps... that would be the bravest of all moments. Whatever happens afterwards is nothing. Yes, here is where you fight your real battle, Mr. Bilbo Baggins. Do you go back?"

I love this movie; it's obviously meant for kids to watch and enjoy, but the animation and the music works so wonderfully together. Here is yet another movie I can just listen to in the background and still enjoy. The voice acting is also delightful, each personification fits their character perfectly. And I love the fact that it doesn't provide any character development or explanations of where the story is going; it's simply pure fun and adventure.

"Surely you don't disbelieve the prophecies because you helped bring them about? You don't really suppose, do you, that all your adventures and escapes were managed by mere luck, just for your sole benefit? You're a very fine person, Mr. Baggins, and I'm very fond of you, but you're only quite a little fellow in a wide world, after all."

"A Mind-Twisting, Eye-Tickling Wonder." (Manohia Dargis, The New York Times) - This movie is a ride! Awesomely Disturbing. I loved it. It's exactly what I wanted; WAY better than "The Cell". The main theme is pretty sweet too. This is a movie you watch for Entertainment and not for any sort of form, structure, or reason. - "I am Justice!"

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Movie (1990,  PG)
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Movie 3.5 Stars
"Yes, Dudes and Dudettes, major league butt-kicking is back in town." - First off, the music and score for this film is AWESOME... dare I say: "Cowabunga?" Even the Turtle Power rap at the end is wicked. - Like many other people my age, this was one of my favorite films growing up. It's simple enough for children to enjoy and complex enough for adults to appreciate, and that spells FUN. (Just look at the name of the villains in this film: The Shredder and his Foot Clan) Despite the fact that their father figure is a giant, ugly rat, the portrayal of Splinter as a kind, loving, understanding mentor is just so powerful that you HAVE to love him. Even though the story focuses more on Raphael's impulsive anger and Casey Jones' involvement, I still enjoy this movie thoroughly. - "Pork Rind?"

Shaun of the Dead (2004,  R)
Shaun of the Dead 4.0 Stars
"Yeaaa, Buoooiiiieeee!!!!" - British spoof of the Survival Horror genre. It does an amazing job of scaring you in between the many laughs. - This is just an amazingly, well-made movie. It hits all the right keys in the emotional department: Comedy, Horror, Drama, Friendship, Violence, etc. Songs by Queen only adds more to the "Fuck Yea" feeling of this movie. In essence, the film is perfect; there was obvioulsy a lot of time, devotion, energy, and love put into this project. There is a bit of a dry spell towards the middle, but that is easily forgiveable. - "FUCK-A-DOODLE-DO!"

Crank (2006,  R)
Crank 3.5 Stars
"If you stop, you die."

This movie gets to the point of Action movies... FUN. It doesn't get much better than this in terms of guy movies: sex, violence, and drugs all engulfed in a furious quest to kill a man, save a special lady friend, and go out with style. And that's exactly what this film brings to the table: STYLE. Despite the fast paced editing, there is significant amount of detail and attention put together in the cinematography, scenery, and costumes; and that's a beautiful thing. (On a side note, the film's even more enjoyable to watch when you're angry or just have your adrenaline going; not only do you feel like your "part of the movie", but you find yourself cheering a whole lot.)

"Don't pop a blood vessel, you little penis."

I think this is about the only movie I can claim to be "too cool". Everything is set up for masculine appreciation (oh, the few joys of manhood). This film, in my opinion, may very well have the best soundtrack in a movie that I've ever seen/heard (I haven't decided yet); not only do the songs sound good, they're perfect for each segment they're in.

The Departed (2006,  R)
The Departed 3.5 Stars
"You want a smoke? You don't smoke, do ya, right? What are ya, one of those fitness freaks, huh? Go fuck yourself." - This movie is BRUTAL and SHARP. The first time you watch it, you're just as stunned as if someone slapped you in the face; after repeated viewings, however, you become numb and callous, but not in a bad way. You've got DiCaprio and Damon being very convincingly Irish with Jack Nicholson as himself; disturbingly, psychotic and vicious. - The movie is fast-paced in editing, but I still felt like it was a long-ass movie, unlike some of Scorsese's previous work. And the movie really didn't need a female supporting character, let alone a love triangle; seriously, there was no reason for her to be in this movie (I mean, she doesn't have any significant role in this film; she would've been better off Running Scared). "Let's say you have no idea, zero, none. If you had an idea about what we do, we wouldn't be good at what we do now would we? We would be cunts, you callin' us cunts?"

"Do you like Little Miss Thing suckin' on your cock?" - After watching this several times On Demand (because there is nothing else good on to watch), I've been convinced that this is a damn good movie. I'm still bitter about the supporting actress, but that shouldn't determine the film's appeal. Beowulf as Mr. French in this movie is the shit. - "No one gives it to you, you have to take it."

Air Force One (1997,  R)
Air Force One 3.5 Stars
"Your national security advisor has just been executed. He's a very good negotiator. He bought you another half hour." - Cheezy? Yes. Explosive? Yes. If you've got a problem with this combination, then go read a book. In the days before we had a trigger-happy Texan ridding the free world of "evil-doers", there was this movie. A film about a president who was tired of negotiating with terrorists; however, the terrorists do the one thing you'd least expect... fight back! So, essentially, this a just a movie showing Harrison Ford kicking terrorist ass aboard a hijacked, fuel-leaking plane that is pretty much being shot at throughout half the film; and that just spells: ENTERTAINMENT IGNITED. And, on the plus side, there are several other great appearances in this movie that just make the film that much better. Musical score is thrillingly patriotic and the special effects aren't noticeably bad. So, unless you've already started reading that book, preboard Air Force One and enjoy the flight. - "GET OFF MY PLANE!!"

Beauty and the Beast (1991,  G)
Beauty and the Beast 3.5 Stars
"If he could learn to love another, and earn her love in return by the time the last petal fell, then the spell would be broken. If not, he would be doomed to remain a beast for all time. As the years passed, he fell into despair and lost all hope. For who could ever learn to love a beast?" - One of the Top Three Best Disney Animated Masterpieces: This movie probably has the best animated facial expressions I have ever seen in any animated feature (Living with two animators, I've come to appreciate certain aesthetics in animated films). - Alan Menken returns once more to create beautiful music that brings Disney "Masterpieces" to life. - Also, this movie features my favorite Disney villain, the loveable, muscle-head Gaston. "When I was a lad, I ate four dozen eggs ev'ry morning to help me get large. And now that I'm grown, I eat five dozen eggs; so I'm roughly the size of a baaaaarge!!"

Mysterious Island (1961,  Unrated)
Mysterious Island 3.5 Stars
This is an awesome film; another one of the many films I watched while growing up. I like the story a lot better than "20,000 Leagues Under The Sea", Jules Verne's preceeding novel. I haven't read the book that this movie is based on, so I can't make any comparisons; but I would like to read it now. However, I'd be even more happy if someone like Tim Burton or Terry Gilliam did a modern remake of this 60's classic. The concept is simple: a bunch of civil war soldiers get stranded on a "mysterious island". The characters are splendidly performed (except for maybe the young, cowardly boy soldier who has to overcome his fear; he sucks), but I always liked the gentleman newspaper writer that becomes the cook in the film. The stop-motion creatures are also very well done in certain scenes and are pathetically humorous in others. So, if you're a fan of cheezy, claymation monster movies (like the old, classic Sinbad movies), you'll LOVE this movie; otherwise, go watch a movie that's "realistic".

Willow (1988,  PG)
Willow 3.5 Stars
"Outta the way, Peck!" - Fun Fantasy-Adventure movie for both adults and younger viewers. - Abudant, beautiful landscapes can be enjoyed in this steadily fast-paced film filled with strong "family love" themes combating "pure evil" with a plethora of magical characters and a charming, lone swordsman played by Val Kilmer. - "W-w-i-l-l-o-w! GoodFellas (1990,  R)
GoodFellas 3.5 Stars
Violent, Brutal, Funny, Warm, Romantic, Touching, Dramatic, Passionate, Shocking, Mesmerizing - Probably the best "True Story" Hollywood has dished out to viewers. It entertains in a fictitious manner to an insouciant degree where viewers don't care if it's a dramatic Hollywood interpretation... It's a Gangster Film! - As the film progresses, you begin to bond with the cast and want all their tragedies, sorrows, and worries to be absolved. Unfortunately, the bad guys never win.

Full Metal Jacket (1987,  R)
Full Metal Jacket 3.5 Stars
"IF you ladies leave my island, IF you survive recruit training... you will be a Weapon, you will be a Minister of Death, praying for war. But until that day you are Pukes! You are the lowest form of life on Earth! You are not even human fucking beings! You are nothing but unorganized, grabasstic pieces of amphibian shit!... Because I am hard, you will not like me. But the more you hate me, the more you will learn. I am hard, but I am fair! There is no racial bigotry here! I do not look down on niggers, kikes, wops, or greasers. Here you are all equally worthless! And my orders are to weed out all non-hackers who do not pack the gear to serve in my beloved Corps! Do you maggots understand that!?"

I've always enjoyed the first half of this movie, it's a great look at the male psyche; it's also very amusing. The second half, I've normally found boring, so I've skipped it. But after watching the whole movie recently, I've grown to appreciate it. The soundtrack alone is awesome (even if it is only a handful of songs), but the narrative is also food for thought.

"The Dead know only one thing... it is better to be Alive."

This movie is awesome. After analyzing it for my Telecommunications class, I was actually able to pin-point just what makes the this film so wonderful. (INSERT ANALYSIS HERE)

"My thoughts drift back to erect nipple wet dreams about Mary Jane Rottencrotch and the Great Homecoming Fuck Fantasy. I am so happy that I am alive, in one piece and short. I'm in a world of shit, yes... But I am alive. And I am not afraid."

A Scanner Darkly (2006,  R)
A Scanner Darkly 3.5 Stars
Philip K. Dick's novel is expressed intrepidly with poetic jargon and hallucinogenic entertainment. An interesting and insightful movie for both the average fan of drug indulgence or the sober-minded critcal thinker. - The majority of this film is basically reflecting paranoia and psychosis. The dark humor is great build up for the last half hour of deeply saddening plot revelation. This is where Philip K. Dick's personal words of suffering and anguish truly resonate and his message is clearly expressed.

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy 3.0 Stars
Great Visual Presentation; very well paced with a great story-telling mechanism, most likely derived from original Radio Broadcasts. This is just a neat little movie to watch; nothing spectacular (other than the special effects), but still a fun experience.

An Officer and a Gentleman (1982,  R)
An Officer and a Gentleman 3.5 Stars
Even though this is supposed to be one of the most romantic movies for women, it's actually very masculine with negative perceptions of women; almost making it a "guy movie". It's mainly just a story about a guy with a troubled childhood who joins the Navy and shows his growth and development throughout bootcamp along with several of his classmates. Along the way, he is warned about Puget Deb's who will do anything to steal a man's life; yet, he still gets involved with one anyways. The best thing about this film is that you get emotiononally involved with all the other characters; and in my case, even more so than the lead characters. - This movie would make an excellent case study on what defines a romantic love story and why women love them. Since this movie is so masculine, why do women seem to like it more than men? If I had to guess, I would guess it has to be the fact that the girl gets the guy without being a lying whore. - The drill seargant is amazing in this movie; he's scrawny, but intense. And he is depicted the way a drill seargeant should be: an asshole you grow to respect and admire. - Now, depending on how you like your movies, this may or may not be a good thing, but the film is not overly dramatic, which seems to work in some scenes but not others; yet I stil enjoyed the film.
