Great cast of actors in this movie!!! Okay! Yes, I AM a huge Tommy Lee Jones fan!! Not yet released.....set for a late September release....so I am told!
(2002 Director: Martin Scorsese) Here is a movie (that feels a bit like theatre to me...my old fiance was an acting major) I can't quite finish watching this movie & now that I am/almost have..it is resonating with me....Some of the most impressive performances in a film I have watched in a long time...Ahhh yes...Scorsese?
Woke up Saturday morning & watched this movie finally on recommendations Liam Niessen...Leonardo DiCaprio...opens with an awesome group gangraising for a fight...what fight? Was it over Irish not been given jobs here in the "New Land"??
Despite some remarkable acting, I felt the editing could have been less choppy. I am not referring to the flashback sequences...where DiCapprio's character remembers some of these "big" gang leaders from when he was just a small 5 yr old boy (orphaned & arriving from Ireland)....More an attempt at an almost artistic statement surrounding conscription (unless you could pay $300 to AVOID the draft), immigration, monopolization/gang ....Extreme violence, raw in many, many parts. COULD NOT watch this film straight through... Bill the Butcher's from-the-gut speech to his "apprentice" Amsterdam (DiCapprio), was the closest thing to tender in this movie & it stays with me.....that is--except for the love that evolves between Diaz & DiCapprio's characters...wheeewwwww [true compassion of spirit & mutual empathy]
Equally, however, I was moved by Cameron Diaz's performance & the story of her character & her "scar"(much worse than my own) but a significantly deeper scarring of her psyche...life as a street urchin from age 12 (orphaned) & taken in by the seemingly compassionless Bill the Butcher (crime boss)......so many faces his character shows...Bill's lasting admiration for "Amsterdam's" dash aka guts....Bill even uses a bible quotation, "Lukewarm, neither hot nor cold, I will spew you out..."
(2006 Director: Christopher Nolan!) Hugh Jackman, Scarlett Johansen, Chrisian Bale, Michael Caine & DAVID BOWIE!! WHAT A CAST!! Watched this movie today (New Year's) in parts. It seemed kind of long but enjoyed it. I thought it was rather oriiginal. I liked the historical aspect & the setting oin likely what the late 1800"s (there was electriicity invented obviously)
Michael Caine is a fascinating actor...Christian Bale also. Parts are a bit raw (violence) not graphic sexuality (for once!!) Based on the book by Christian Priest.
Director: Woody Allen...uh...how did I miss this one??
Hm just read this is Woody Allen's own personal favorite!!
[a Flixster friend (JC') review of Dune:] the movie dune the original version of the movie didnt do much justice to the book since it was cut an hour short but there is a special edition of the movie dune wich has the 1984 original theatrical version and the 3 hours and 20 minute directors cut check out the directors cuit it has scenes that was cut from the 1984 version and makes the film even better. overall its a beautoiful film to look at with spectaculkar special effects especially the seqence of the worm and to see aeveral big starsstar in this film way befroe they became famous like virgina madesen, dean stockwell, patrick stewart aka captain jean luc picard on star trek, brent spiner data from star trek, jurgen pronchow the famous german actor from das boot, sting, richard jordan and sean young before blade runner sucxcess and also contains a wondeful score from tangerine. you must watch it just to expereince it
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED (BY gary) Flixster's summation: "A forensic detective (Fiennes) and an insurance claims investigator (Ryder) trek to investigate a potential Darwin Award winner. From www.darwinawards.com: "The Darwin Awards salute the improvement of...( read more ) the human genome by honoring those who accidentally kill themselves in really stupid ways."
(2007 Director: Richard LaGravenese) Sounds awesome, Craig! WOW! I liked your review of this film ...and uh hmnmmm I am just a beginning student observer (starting my classroom observation) NOT in high school thank God! !
Just now my friend Amy told me Hillary Swank gives a tremendous performance as a fledgling new grad beginning her teaching career. I see Patrick Dempsey (Grey's Anatomy) also stars!
FRENCH COMEDY..HIGHLY RECOMMENDED TO ME. MY recommendation of foreign films? (1999 Director: Francois Girard) Had been looking forward to this one--and it was not a dissappointment! Story follows the "life" of this red violin created as a masterpiece by Niccolo Brazzolo in 1683! Tragic storyline. This violin survives incredible changes in the times since it was made--Renaissance thru Chairman Mao obtaining power in China! My son already wants to study violin.....a red Stratavaious!? I AM UNSURE WHICH ACTORS' PERFORMANCES I ENJOYED THE MOST! DO RENT/BUY THIS ONE & PLEASE SHARE IT! Samuel L. Jackson is I believe something of his true self in this one!

Hmmm...watched it late last Friday night and thought it entirely too dark..with the exception of Woody Harrelson as the hired "cleaner" to hit the psychopathic killer gone awry. D A R K
If you COULD get beyond the horridly bleak and inevitable deathwish of an unsuspecting "good guy" stumbling upon a terribly peculiar drug deal gone back body count (far far out in the desert) then okay. But the pace was sooo slow and the psychopath so abberhent that I fail to see any redeeming reason to have endured the slow-paced inevitable. I am hoping Tommy Lee Jones will be given a GOOD part soon!! He has much more talent that this film or Tres Mujeres he made not long ago...Scarey thought? I think I have known a couple of Bardems. That's what drugs is doing to this country....so I suppose there might be some kind of message...in an extremely dreary film.
(2007 Director: Robert Redford) Whata cast!! together again...Robert Redford Meryl Streep AND Tom Cruise. Cruise plays a Republican Senator who is quite pro war expansion into Afghanistan. Up close interview given to Streep by Cruise give some extremely iInteresting perspectives & kind of a wake up call......
IF YOU LIKE THIS ONE, be sure to watch Charlie Wilson's War...
Hmmm Craig (aka Slient War here)...only gave this 2.5 stars....Music is one of my truest longest loves! Willl let you know my rating once i watch this movie! Hmmm and Reese Witherspoon & Hugh Grant??
Hey both Ben & I are HUGE fans of Hugh Jackman (Wolverine-Xmen, The Prestige, Van Helsing) & Rachel Weisz (Nephretiri-The Mummy/Returns, Sunshine & The Constant Gardner)
(Feb. 2007 Director: Olivier Dahan) This movie touched me in the old style very very Charlie Chaplain kind of way...not exactly a musical..although rich and demonstrative of the times it is set in....
Gerard Deparieu (Cyrano, The Man in the Iron Mask & the Count of Monte Cristo) as Daddy De L'Eppe..who was a savior truly a saviour to little near orphan Edith, now Edith Piaf (Marion Coutillard). I am almost ashamed to have waited to see this on Netflix online as an "instant play," but it moved me so on this late Saturday night..I feel I myself this woman's life story is an inspiration to go on--no matter what obstacle or loss! This mighty little woman with the big voice & incredible big violet blue eyes...went from singing with her circus performing Dad on the streets (begging) passing through a deep albeit life-long friendship with another runaway gal (portrayed by Elisabeth Commelin) and ultimately to arrive in demand commanding the talents of many refined & talented along the way.....
St. Theresa is to whom little Edith prays as a small child...and she even has visions regarding this spiritual connection.
Craig's & Badblondie's reviews definitely made this sound like a must-see! And they were oooohh soooooo right!
Sad...heart rendering story of an amazing life, born a deprived child, shuffled back and forth between Dad & Grandma (who ran a brothel where she was truly loved, however), back with dad...rather sickly in her youth.
A tiny frame with such a large spirit & love of the cabaret night life & camaraderie as a common person who was destined for fame despite her obstacles.
Simply adore Harvey Keitel's (the Piano, From Dusk Till Dawn) perfoirmancse. Harvey you are a masetro! Love that twinkle you always have in your eyes. ... & Steve Bescemi (The Island, Conair) continues to amaze me..what a chameleon! Could he be EVEN cuter with braces??? (I had them in my 20's) That was when I met HIM..Mr. Richard Burton..or might as well have been!!....
Great cast. As a big Sigourney Weaver fan myself...which tells me that the script or story must be fantastic!! Alan Rickman is a great talent--think of him more as a classic stage actor...so this must be quite the personal performance film. I had heard nothing about this film--only one person on Flixster's recommendation.
(2004 Director: Michael Mayer) A Home at the End of the World, an intimate film based on a novel by Michael Cunningham (Pulitzer prize-winning author of The Hours). Oh stars one of my personal favorite actresses, Sissy Spacek AND the amazingly talented Colin Farrell. Preposterous lifestyles
Why don't I know this lead actress former Best Actress oscar winner Francis McDermond (City by the Sea, North Country, Fargo, Something's Gotta Give, Mississippi Burning) ??
(1994 Director: Tim Burton) Did you know??? Landau began in NYC as a cartoonist and illustrator?? Who ELSE starred in his AMAZING film which I missed and am renting or Netflix "instantl viewing THIS week?? Why even little Annie herself! (Sarah Jessica Parker) WHAT OVER THREAT FLMS WERE MADE IN 1994?? The Crow Forrest Gump Pulp Fiction True Lies(I liked it!!
(1958 Comedy French classic) Delightful. On DVD in spoken French with English subtitles...this is mostly a nonverbal artistic satire on The Joneses conforming to the "Modern Age" of technology...and societal attitudes! BRAVO!! I loved it! A quirky and pleasing French comedy by director Jacques Tati. 'Mon Oncle' displays, as an underlying theme, the contrast between the new and the old: the old buffoon trying to 'grow up' and get a respectable job in something that is strange and new to him; the 50-60s retro-futuristic houses from the suburbs, full of strange gadgetry and colourful furniture, compared to the poor and old-fashioned neighbourhoods. Even Jacques Tati's 'Monsieur Hulot' is practically a silent film character - much like Charlie Chaplin or Buster Keaton - in a sound film. As such, it is an unusual combination of subtle humour and slapstick. A great film .As such, it is an unusual combination of subtle humour and slapstick. A great film "poignant" and bfore it's time!!
(1962 Director: J. Lee Thompson ) UNRATED Shocker!! Remade in 1991 with none other than Robert DeNiro in the lead role...Well done J Lee Thompson. Cat & mouse plot stalker.
(Nov 2008 Director: Marc Forster) (Screenplay by Paul Haggis, Neal Purvis & Robert Wade) Loved Daniel Craig in Casino Royale as the "new" Bond...THIS movie openswith A for Action!!
This movie has continuity with Casino Royale, Daniel Craig's first Bond movie. Bond enlists the aid of Mathis (Giancarlo Giannini) & also Felix (Jeffrey Wright) who co-starred with him in Casino Royale....James does have a vengeance for those who killed his love interest, despite his protestations made to "M." He goes rogue yet again..but THIS time "M" eventually shows her faith in Bond's motives.. Jeffrey Wright (W, Broken Flowers, Casino Royale) is in this movie again....playing a low low key SudAmerica informant
[UPDATE: 11/29/08 **Awesome interview of Craig & Kurylnko on Jimmie Kimmel Live tonight. Did you know??? Daniel Craig had a rather serious shoulder injury & an injury to his finger during filming (His shoulder required surgery post-film.) These 2 did their stunts themselves!
MORE,...
Except of review by Scott Mantz of Access Hollywood, ". . .Where 'Casino Royale' successfully rebooted the franchise that was born in 1962 by going back to basics, 'Quantum of Solace' strips Bond so far back that he more closely resembles the likes of gritty super-spy Jason Bourne. That's evident from the get-go during a hyper-kinetic car chase, which turns into a thrilling rooftop pursuit that?s reminiscent of 'The Bourne Ultimatum.'
Picking up where 'Casino Royale' left off, Agent 007 seeks out to avenge the death of his beloved Vesper. His personal vendetta leads him to Dominic Greene (Mathieu Amalric), a ruthless businessman who plans to seize control of the world's most valuable resource. With the help of a mysterious ally named Camille (Olga Kurylenko), it's up to James Bond to stop that from happening.
Thanks to a career that includes art house fare like 'Monsters Ball,' 'Finding Neverland' and 'The Kite Runner,' Marc Forster may seem like an unusual choice to direct a reported $200 million tentpole like 'Quantum of Solace.' He rises to the occasion when it comes to the action scenes, but his attempts to shake up the franchise have taken the fun out of the character. Gone are the cheesy one-liners & Bond works his bedroom eyes on just one femme fatale.
More importantly, the screenplay (written by Paul Haggis, Neal Purvis and Robert Wade) is so convoluted that trying to determine the plot winds up being a mission unto itself. Then again, that's been the case with most of the Bond movies over the last 20 years, since the end of the Cold War made it increasingly difficult for writers to come up with fully realized villains that moviegoers loved to hate."
(by Sexyvixen posted here) for this movie....New Bond Girl Proud of Her 'Little Oddity'
Posted by SexiVixxEN http://movies.yahoo.com/feature/gemmaarterton_blog...Bond girls have long been exceptional women. From Ursula Andress to Halle Berry, they have each embodied the feminine ideal of their particular time. Arterton, a graduate of London's Royal Academy of Dramatic Art who was best known for a BBC adaptation of Thomas Hardy's "Tess of the D'Urbervilles," beat out 1,500 contenders to become the latest Bond girl.
awesome review by Danielle Staiss!!This sounds like intensely sensitive subject matter......daring to combine all of these different elements.....Grieving is a long process...My father just died and it reminds me of my brother's sudden untimely death years earlier....Looking forward to seeing this one.
(2008 Director: Goerge C Wolfe) I had much anticipation about this movie...wow..the intimate hotel Mrs. Adrienne Willis (Diane Lane) travels to by ferry is on one of the most beautiful ocean beaches in North Carolina. One of those popular in Asia design-on-stilts if you will--raised up a floor above the sandy beach so high tide beats right up to the door step practically. Oh, golly, is the Atlantic Ocean gorgeous. I had forgotten just how gorgeous & could have mistaken it for Florida's coast. This was a quiet stretch of beach unlike Florida with a lore of there being wild stallions which roam the beach--rarely seen wild horses..
Dr. Flanner (Richard Gere) arrives the lone guest at Jean (Viola Davis)'s beautiful beach hotel, a bread and breakfast where Mrs. Willis is chief cook and bottle washer. Dr. Flanner is totally preoccupied and just sold his lovely personal residence we have seen in the opening scenes. He could not appear more restless.
Dr. Flanner is given the "blue room" in the inn, and the wind is really kicking up as he arrives. Adrienne's friend has a zillion photos on her fridge in the kitchen and she has prominantly placed one, a great photo which she has folded off her straying soon to be ex Mr. Jack Willis (Christopher Meroni-Law & Order).
These are 2 of my favorite actors set in a scenario which I did not know what to expect from. It originally seemed a little bit formula & perhaps it is. Interestingly, though, I had a dream about such a beach house and an approaching storm recently...What I can tell you is there are jangled nerves in that inn!@!
The Doc is grateful for a good home-cooked meal, but tells Mrs. Willis he does not wish to eat alone. Awkwardly Adrienne chats & sits down joining Doc for dinner. What these 2 people have in common is several things: unsettling change, responsibility personalities, children.
This films uses a combination of flashbacks to set the stage...plus a pretty good deal of symbolism and some foreshadowing. The turbulent ocean--even hurricane watch, Dr. Flanner's impetuousness including his manly insisting on carrying heavy beams to batton down the hatches in preparation to the hurrican. There is a spiritualistic tone to the house, as it is a remnant of history dating back to the U.S. Civil War.
Adrienne at dinner tells him a story from a folk tale of Capt. Light which her Dad used to tell her...and she laments the recent death of her father.
Jack practically begs to return to get back togehter just as he arrived to pick up their 2 children and take them to Orlando on vacation, inviting Adrienne to join them. But she had his prior committment to her friend Jean (Viola Davis) to watch Jean's great grandmother's inn for her...and lucky thing that she did!
The tension felt by Jack is tangible. You can hear it, see it and yes could almost touch it!! Flashbacks are used to hint at the conflict or possible tragedy he just also experienced.
I loved seeing Richard Gere run along the beach....while he is flashing back on his rounds at the hospital where he had recently performed a surgery on Mrs. Torrelson (Linda Molloy) to remove a facial tumor.
This becomes imnportant as his circumstances come to light (SPOILER ALERT**) when he pays Mr. Robert Torrelson (Scott Glenn) a visit. This was Dr. Jack Willis 's reason for his trip to the inn at Rodanthe, NC.
The plot weaves back and forth a little too much for my liking. Perhaps it was overedited so that a few parts are a little "made to fit"? I am not sure that was it --perhaps budget only allowed for a certain number of total minutes. The story I liked. A spin is put toward delving into the raw emotions all of the main characters are feeling and includes an effort which to me somewhat resembled "Field of Dreams," where an emancipated housewife though in this case accepts responsibility for her life choices, including the choice to live her life in a way to make herself happy too!
I liked the movie. I felt, however, it tried a little too hard..without setting up enough characterization in advance for us to fully comprehend the rush of emotions each character was agonizing with. A bit painful to watch--including the very realistic I might say "awkwardness" which a recently separately woman feels when trying to respond to the interest and admiration of a male love interest. I would hardly describe Mrs. Willis as behaving on "automatic pilot," the way a woman UNHAPPILY married starts to act, in a somewhat downcast way, having squelched her personal desires in order for her children's egos to be stroked.
There is no psychiatric analysis made nor any professionals offering opinions on the chaotic and intense emotional tides each one faces.
I would recommend this movie if you are comfortable in your own skin. The awkward chemisty is refreshing for the most part...the very REAL part of this movie.
I just loved the first 2 Ice Age movies. Not sure if it was because Ray Romano & Queen Latifah are the voice of the Wooly Mammoth, or because of Scrat...Who knows? Must be coming out soon...this "preview story" written 257 days ago said it was still in the making.."Posted by SexiVixxEN 257 days ago
Full Story: http://www.worstpreviews.com/headline.php?id=7928&...
Today, we have the first still from the upcoming "Ice Age 3: Dawn of the Dinosaurs," which features Scrat being caught between the teeth of a giant T-Rex.
Even though the film is still over a year away, the teaser for "Ice Age 3" is currently playing in front of "Horton Hears a Who." As with the first two films, the teaser features Scrat chasing an acorn. Since, I have not seen "Horton" in theaters, I can only guess that Scrat ends up in front of a dinosaur.
After helming the first two installments, Carlos Saldanha is returning to direct the third film, which is scheduled to hit theaters on July 1st, 2009."
Just saw it previewed on TV (Access Hollywood last night, I think) Looks like a tale of hope. Carey stars as an abused wife who gets a chance in the music business. Carey happily remarried in her currently "real" life...
(2008 Director: Steven Ayer) Based on Dominque's description of this movie as a cross between ("The Shield meets LA Confidential"). On of my most favorite movies, LA Confidential!...PLUS a great acting performance turned in by Keanu Reeves!
(2008 Director: Woody Allen) My idol....Woody Allen is back! This movie is narrated in an on again, off again fashion by Christopher Evan Welch. Perhaps this is to help explain some of the complexities of the characters in this film.
Penelope Cruz won an Oscar for best actress for her perfomance in this film where she co-starred as Maria Elena, the ex-wife of Juan Antonio Gonzalo (Javier Bardem). What starts as a summer trip to Spain between 2 college friends, free-spirited Cristina (Scarlett Johansson) and more conservative Vicky (Rebecca Hall), quickly becomes much more complicated. Vicky and Cristina are welcomed to the villa of Judy (Patricia Clarkson),, a long-time family friend of Ficky. The quaintness & lovely long guitar music nights these 2 friends spend result in them together meeting Doug, a confident Spanish painter who invites them both to join him on a plane to his city, Olvieda, Spain.
Disquieting with the lilting feeling of something more about to happen...was the major feeling evoked by this film including such adjectives found in any wonderfully elusive novel...adventure, wanderlust, spontanaeity.
This film has both James Earl Jones AND Max Von Sydrow AND Richard Burton too! Give a girl a moment!! Reason enough to see it!! AND a hypnosis machine!! HOW DID I MISS THIS ONE????
Al says this movie grabs, touches you and takes your breath away! Now I want to go to the hteaher to see this one!!
Eastwood's character reminds me of my own father and besrt buds, James (Pappy-W W II VET) & Cecil (Korean War vet)I could tell you stories, their stories, God rest their souls!!
(2009 Director: Zack Snyder) Based on a 11988 Huho award-winning novel, "Watchmen" by Alan Moore & Dave Gibbons (League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, V for Vendetta) .
(1961 Director: Kurosawa) After I suppose a year + 1/2 on this site.....(sans 6 mos spent with my recently deceased father).....I have wondered what criteria goes into becoming a :Super Reviewer" on Flixster, this wonderful but very very young actually movie site!?!?!
Well. just in case you have been wondering too? READ the reviews of THIS MOVIE!!
(2001 Director: William Wenders) This sounds like a true portrait of Americana. Always love that in a movie, kind of like Humphrey Bogart's ear, God rest the greats!!
(2005 Directors: Egbert Van Hees & Stuart Samuels) Stars David Lynch...DUNE, Nadia, Rabbits)) Hmmmm.. I have never seen the movie El Topo which is one of the films covered in this documentary.
(1989 Director: Woody Allen) Co-stars Nartin Landau, Alan Alda & Mia Farrow. Mnother reviewer states, "...Martin Landau is a true legend and in this movie his acting is really superb. Woody is great, as are Mia Farrow and Alan Alda . This is an excellent movie."
(2008 Director: Brad Anderson) Okay.Yeah, sure, I'm prejudiced. How so? Suspense, good suspense..it IS my favorite genre...travel mixed with suspense...and what an awesome cast. Call me old school, but Perry Mason and a good murder mystery get my brain cells firing. This is the warmest and coldest of films
Na Zdorovie! Director Anderson shows international travel by train..and Russia herself! C'est tres' double americaine (Roy & Jessie) board this train to top off a rather exhilerating "mission" trip to China with Roy's church where they have done some helpful building projects. Roy hopes to "spice up" their lives and make Jessie with this trip....quite selflessly and the trip ends up being a wake up call.
2 amazing-looking people, Spaniard Carlos Ximenez (Eduardo Noriega) and Abby Brunnell (Kate Mara) of Seattle, Washington, are 2 travelers who also board the Transsiberian train. In fact, they arrive one day into the Transsiberian trip Jessie meeting them and Carlos and Abby joining the pair right in their own sleeping car which accommodates 4, abruptly interrupting the privacy of Roy Nasar (Woody Harrelson) and Jessie Nasar (Emily Mortimer), husband and wife. Jessie is an amateur photographer and snaps photos all along the way. Fropm their arrival, the new couple & Jesse are nearly inseparable from that point forward.. Jesse does not drink tho Carlos repeatedly tries to get her to try the Russian Vodka!! There are some awesome scenes of both the countrysides & the Russian people in this stark land of contrasts. The food it would seem is spectacular, however, and at the very least (in case thrillers are not your forte) well, the Russian comraderie I found enjoyable. Roy is quite the charmer in this drama/suspense trhiller--and early on seemingly abandons Jessie, leaving her quite at the clutches of this unlikely couple in their cars. They all disboard the Transsiberian railway once they are certain Roy has been left behind. There are more turns & twists in this thriller to make it far more than a MUST SEE!.
Roy & Jessie share with Carlos and Abbey that they seem to have trouble with their passports. So Carlos asks Roy to show him their passports (over the dinner table in the dining car of the train). Roy forks them over & we see fresh passports..brand spanking new! Carlos comments that the way not to be bothered by Customs is to "not stand out." To which Roy asks, "You mean you think we look like we are Americans?" And Carlos & Abbey almost fall to the floor!!
(2008 Director: John Patrick Shanley) Lots & lots of use of foreshadowing in this movie which might actually escape you it is so obvious! Film gets its title from one of the more memorable sermons preached by Padre Flynn (Phillip Seymour Hoffman) The styles of the Principal of St. Nicholas School, Sister Aloysius Beaviiuer (Meryl Streep) is counter to the style of the newish Padre whose sermons are presented complete with some Irish voicing set to a story of Father O'Rourke.
Set in 1966, "the year after JFK's assassination," the conversative times are reflected in both the uniforms worn by the students at the Parochial middle school as well as the floor length garb worn by the nuns. Just a reminder for the youth here on Flixster, that the 1960's was when legislation was passed against segregation and forcing "school busing" to create school racial integration. A very innocent Sister James new to St. Nicholas School is appointed to teach 8th grade social studies and is passionately portrayed by Amy Adams (Enchanted). Written on the blackboard is the infamous quotation, "There is nothing to fear except fear itse.fl" Sister James is being mentored by the tough, experienced Principal SIster Beauvier (Meryl Streep) who instills fear in her students. Sister James is in turmoil over whether or not to share with her Mother Superior an incident which occured the prior week. Sister Beauvier is stern, even confiscating one ofthe student's new transistor radio he was listening to in class.
Sister Beauvier was once married to an Italian who was killed in "the War." she relates to the parent of Donald, one of the newer students at the Parish who is removed as altar boy for drinking "altar wine." The occurrence arouses the full suspicions of the Director who is relentless and should think of becoming a detective!!
Sister Beauvier: "Que pasa en la rectoria?"
Padre Flynn: "No pasa nada"" The dialogue of these 3 spiritual leaders shifts to address the suspicions of young Sister James relating to their one black student, Donald (Joseph Foster).
Love both leads, Philip Seymour Hoffman & Meryl Streep who play cat and mouse in this duel of wits.... Subject matter? Suspicion. Is their abuse?
During their seemingly light interchange Padre Flynn gets a sermon inspiration which Streep presses him for the subject of. He shares it is "intolerance.:" Father Flynn interjects a discussion about the Church needing to play a larger role during "these times."
Father Flynn: "IIt's a new time."
Sis Beauvier: "What's new about it?"
Flynn: The church needs to change.
Beauvier:
Flynn: "We should take the children out...
But we are not members of their family? We are different.
Why? Because of our vows?
Precisely.
And they think we are different. The working class parents of our Parish trust us to be different.
I think you are getting off the subject.
The Christmas pagent. We must be careful how Donald Miller is used.
What about Donald Miller?
We must be care that we neither hide Donald Miller nor put him forward.
Because of the color of his skin?
That's right...."
The point being?
Flynn: We should be friendlier.
Beauvier: But we are not family.. We are different.
Flynn: Why? Because of our vows?
Sleuth Sista' Streep bristles at her certainty of Padre Flynn's misconduct in every fiber of her being Sister James thinks her suspicions are unwarranted and relate more to his preferences for ball point pens, 3 lumps of sugar in his tea not to mention the Father's suggestion of a secular song being added to the annual Christmas pageant they are planning together......
The working class of our parish trust us to be different.
Que pasa en la rectoria?"No pasa nada."
"?Y bien?"
"Por su puesto."
Yo estoy convencia."
Yo lo tumblare."
"Look at that you blew out my light, In ancient Sparta important matters were decided by who shouted loudest. Fortunately we are not in anciient Sparta. Now sit down!"
This transplanted Midwesterner remembers the winds and sounds of the Fall season. A recurring gale force strong wind blows throughout the course of the days the period of several weeks in which this film is set. Even one of the lights in the ceiling of Principal Beauvier's office repeatedly blows out at key moments of dialogue no less!!
(2009 Director: Ron Howard) Saw both Tom Hanks & Ron Howard interviewed on the Morning Show day before yesterday or so ago......sounded like this is SEQUEL TO THE DA VINCI CODE? Someone correct me please if I am wrong?
Bought the book The DaVinci Code...but have not read it yet. Also have NOT yet seen the movie. Robert Langdon's novel, Angel's and Demon's, this movie is based on.
(1998 Director: Beeban Kidron) Good cast...another tragic tale of prejudice and unacceptance by community of strangers. Stars Ian McKellen (XMen, LOTR), Kathy Bates, Rachel Weisz (The Mummy), Joss Ackland and the charming Vincent Perez (Frankenstein, Queen of the Damned, Je reste!--I'm Staying!).
(1978 Director: John Milius) Stars Barbara Hale (aka Della Street-Perry Mason), Gary Busey, Jan-Michael Vincent, Jean-Michael Vincent & Fran Ryan (Ma Kettle
(1943 Director: Tim Whelan) Stars Frank Sinatra, Barbara Hale (Della Street-Perry Mason), Grace Hartman, Jack Haley (The Tinman-Wizard of Oz) & Leon Errol.
Yummy! Judi Dench +_ Johnny Deppy = Interesting Cast!! (2000 Director: Lasse Hallstrom) This movie comes highly recommended by many! I finally rented it..I like the tone of the movie. Vienne,a young mother (Juliette Binochi) & daughter Anouk (Victoire Thivisol ) rent a store site just weeks prior to the Lent season & open the most delightful chocolate and candiy shop. The town official immediate disapproves of this lovely friendly UNMARRIED single mother in a conservative French town...I especially like that this story is augmented with narration, a female narrator.
If one does not attend the church, one is not accepted in this little town. There is a certain "magic' about this Chocolat Juliette makes so specially, perhaps a certain Maya secret--a belief in the magical properties of Cacao. The harsh, strong North wind plays a fole in the gypsy-like stirrings within the souls of so many in this film.
Qoutling a review from Netflix.. "Murmur of the Heart" tells a linear story of a 14 year-old adolescent boy, who comes from a bourgeois family, exploring and searching his identity and sexuality. Splashed with Freudian (Oedipus complex), Existential (Camus and suicide) and Proust (nature of art and homosexuality) overtones, the movie delivers a perverse and engaging narrative structure. "Peverse" in a sense that the movie is determined to counter to what is expected. "Peverse" in a sense that it suspense and rejects any absolute notion of what is right and proper, and challenges its audience to re-evaluate his/her values and opinions. One of the reviewers criticized the movie of how it didn't tell him how to feel about the controversial themes. On one hand, I believe, this reviewer is right. The movie does not hand out freebes or solutions to infidelity, homosexuality, indifferent and detached father, and incest. Like most of 14 year-old boys, its a period of time of struggle and frustration with one's own sexual identity. I don't believe that the film condones or excuses infidelity, incest, and child molestation (as one critic claims); on the contrary, "Murmur of the Heart" simply tells or shows a confused and, yet, intelligent boy, whose identity is still developing, without any signs of didactic, self-rightousness. It seems to me is that the main problem several critics have with the film is the sexual relationship between the mother and son. Absolutely it's perverse but it doesn't hinder and cheapen this great movie. Incest has been the subject of art since Shakespeare and Greek mythology.
(1969 Director: Sergio Leone) Powerful review by GaryX. This is a movie which I believe I have seen...just took me awhile to reailze it! May have to replay it to recall the sorrows of the plot..
(2006 Directors: Darren Ashton & Ken Jacobs) Interesting cast...dancing...enjoyed what are depicted here as :simiilar: films, namely, Take the Lead, Mad HOt Ballroom, Confetti, Best in Show. (a long list!)..,..
(2008 Director: Neil LaBute) Have not heard much about this one but in reading friends' reviews here...WOw! Shockingly dark apparently...might make you think BEFORE buying a house!! LOL
Here is a short synposis quoting Arnold White's review on NY Press, "...The film was actually written by David Loughery and Howard Korder and produced by Will Smith, exercising his Mr. Hyde side. That means Smith is responsible for perpetrating the outlandish pairing of Jackson and LaBute, two of the most scandalous scoundrels in film history...." http://www.nypress.com/article-18830-walking-a-thin-blue-line.html
(2004 Director: Kay Pollak) Flixster compares movies...or lets us compare movies..anyway it listed this one as "similar" to "Chocolat"? Anyone seen it?

Bond girls have long been exceptional women. From Ursula Andress to Halle Berry, they have each embodied the feminine ideal of their particular time. Gemma Arterton, the statuesque stunner who plays Agent Fields in next month's Quantum of Solace, has proven herself to be exceptional not only for her English Rose beauty, but also because she was born with six fingers on each hand.
"It's my little oddity that I'm really proud of," she said to Esquire magazine. "It makes me different." Different indeed. The condition, called Polydactyly, occurs in 1 of every 500 births.
Don't bother looking for additional digits in the film, though. As a child, the surplus digits were "tied," which causes the boneless protrusions to fall off with time. She still bares bumpy scars where her extra appendages once were.
Earlier this year, she revealed that she was also born with a crumpled ear, which was surgically corrected in childhood. "I was born with lots of deformities," the 22-year-old actress told the British press.
Arterton, a graduate of London's Royal Academy of Dramatic Art who was best known for a BBC adaptation of Thomas Hardy's "Tess of the D'Urbervilles," beat out 1,500 contenders to become the latest Bond girl. She admitted to InStyle magazine that having to kiss Daniel Craig on her first day working on the film had her "giggling left, right, and center and being really immature."
Next up for Arterton is the movie adaptation of the videogame Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, starring Jake Gyllenhaal, coming the summer of 2010. To see more of the genetically unusual but undeniably extraordinary future star, watch the behind-the-scenes video from "Quantum of Solace"
(2002 Director: Stefan Schwartz) Sounds interesting!? How did I miss this one? Thanks Ruba for sharing your review of this one!! Some great stars in it too.
(1990 Director: Alan Parker) Seems there were made a film or 2 including hush hush accounts of the internment of Japanese living in America in response to WW II! This film is one; another is Snow Falling on Cedars, though in a less underplayed way..
Just watching this movie (Netflix rental) tonight. I have awaited its arrival & been looking forward to it! Wished to see it both for the actors & its themes & wondering how it was handled--released in 1990 (filmed at the end of the '80's "Me" generation] Both sides of this cd-rom have film--the main movie on one side; the flip side has directorial comments, video images & much more.
This is a very sensitive handling of the racial & nationalism issues of the 1940's just pre-bomibing of Pearl Harbor set when this very unlikely pair met. Irish Projectionists' Labor Union attorney Jack McGunn (Dennis McQuaid) well versed in the Wagner Labor Relations Act. Jack is ousted because he disapproves of the dirty politics and is forced to move to Los Angeles to stay with his brother (Colm Meany) and meets through his modest job as projectionist for a private theatre in Little Toyko the beautiful Lily Wakamura (Tamlyn Tomita) seamstress & daughter of a modest Japenese family living in Little Tokyo (Los Angeles).
(2003 Director: Todd Haynes) Director Todd Haynes handles a delicate subject that never used to appear on screen: homosexuality or bisexuality. Very successful top appliance salesman Dennis Quaid leads a double life. Successful businessman and family man stars to rock the boat in his 2 kids 2 car garage suburban paradise.
