Twilight (2008,  PG-13)
Twilight 3.5 Stars
I thought the biggest let down of the film was that it lacked the build up of Edward and Bella's relationship. Perhaps if more lines and scenes were taken from Stephenie Meyer's book, the chemistry would have remained. In the book, the magic that occurs between the two characters is what I found most alluring about the story. This film lacks emotion and poignancy and moves too fast!
Hardwicke dealt exceptionally well with teen angst, which was evident in the high school shots. Unfortunately, she really struggled with the vampire side of things. The story is supposed to be a song that takes you to another world, one where vampires and werewolves exist.
Edward - beautiful and perfect but can relax a bit on the lipstick. Bella - also beautiful but could've added in a bit more delicacy and emotion. Rosalie is freaking hot and one sassy vamp. I believe that the best character portrayal of the entire book was Alice; she was EXACTLY what I expected. She was really upbeat, and "in your face" nice. The scene in which she said, "It's okay Edward! Me and Bella are going to be GREAT friends", was perfect. I like Jacob: that glare that he gave Edward Cullen at prom - INTENSE!
It was not a complete loss because the baseball scene was fabulous. Set to Muse's "Super Massive Black Hole," the game plays out just as it should even up to the entrance of the antagonistic vampires. If only the care taken with this scene had been applied to then entire movie, this film could have been superior because of all the potential it held.
Overall, I enjoyed "Twilight" for what it was - a romance that probed the timeless dilemma of wanting what you can't have. If you try and compare this movie to the book, of course you're going to end up hating the movie, because the book is, by far, way better. BTW, I only just finished reading the book yesterday but am now officially a Stephenie Meyer's fan. Can't wait to read her other books!
And I have a new quote now "You're my own personal brand of heroin!" lol
I would be expecting more from the sequels, because the potential is certainly there.
