Batman (1989,  PG-13)
Batman 4.0 Stars
Good film, has been surpassed by Batman Begins as the best Batman movie.Jack Nicholson steals the show here as the Joker,he goes waaaay over the top to very entertaining effect.Danny Elfman's score is one of the best ever. And yes,Batman doesn't completely behave like Batman should(this got a little worse in Batman Returns),but this was always Tim Burton's version of Batman so he brings all of his usual quirks to the movie.Kim Basinger is pretty useless in this, she probably should have been named plot device cause that's all she basically is here. And what's with her hair changing every time she appears?

No Holds Barred (1989,  PG-13)
No Holds Barred 1.5 Stars
Hulk Hogan's ludicrous starring debut where he basically plays himself but they call him Rip here,a good hearted wrestler who loves kids and is loyal to the network he wrestles for.An evil network executive wants Hulk for his network and gets really angry(actually he's pretty much angry all the time)when he's turned down. The exec is so cartoonishly evil he makes Mr Burns look subtle. He also continuously refers to Hulk as a "jockass",wow what an insult.Hulk eventually has to fight Zeus,an enormous psychopath with a crooked unibrow who has maybe three words of dialogue. The scene with Hulk getting ready for bed in clothes so skimpy they would shame Richard Simmons must have scarred kids for life.Say what you will about The Rock, but he's Lawrence Olivier compared to the Hulkster.A truly awful,so bad it's good entertainment.

Road House (1989,  R)
Road House 3.5 Stars
Spectacularly silly film with Patrick Swayze as Dalton, the best bouncer there is(and an NYU philosophy major to boot)who is hired to clean up a hellhole bar and tangles with the local fatcat who runs the town."Pain don't hurt"(!?) Dalton wisely intones at one point, one of many howlingly bad lines in the script.Swayze has a lame romance with the local doctor who naturally doesn't approve of his violent ways and Sam Elliot turns up as Swayze's grizzled mentor.Swayze's mullet is also featured prominately,so much it should have shared top billing. The villain's righthand henchman actually says "prepare to die" when facing off with the Swayz and utters one of the most bizarre, head scratching lines in movie history.Guarantee you'll know it when you hear it.An 80's camp classic.
