Barton Fink (1991, R)
Bizarre Coen Bros film about a pretentious playwright who comes to Los Angeles to write a wrestling movie and stays at a creepy hotel. There he meets his friendly average joe neighbor who is not what he seems.Of course the film is extremely well made, with excellent cinematography and performances. I really love Michael Lerner as the excitable studio boss, he's awesome.Does this hold up to the other Coen classics? I wouldn't say so, but it's still highly watchable, and at the very least it will leave you thinking and talking about it, unlike most instantly forgettable movies. It's pretty funny that the last 3rd of No Country For Old Men pissed so many people off, they've obviously never seen Barton Fink. The last third takes a serious detour into strange, almost David Lynch style territory. It's some kind of hellish (literally) metaphor for the creative process...I guess. Who but The Coens really knows what the hell it's supposed to mean? |

Cape Fear (1991, R)
Good but not great remake. You expect a little bit more from Scorsese and Deniro.Major flaw:Nick Nolte does a good job but his family is so unlikable that you don't care if Deniro smokes them or not.And the movie is fairly serious all the way through until the end where it goes really over the top(Deniro speaking in tongues among other moments)but it is a solid movie overall, wisely retaining the great original music score by Bernard Herrmann. |

Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991, R)
Awesome sequel to the equally awesome original.Man,between this and Aliens James Cameron is the master of sequels.Great effects and action and Arnold's best performance.Although I could do without the touchy feely,Terminator learns how to be a better cyborg stuff but whatever. It's a small part of the overall film and doesn't detract from it too much. And the T-1000,great villain, creepy bastard. The CGI is still pretty damn cool(love the face through the bars bit)but some of the practical effects, wtf? The T-1000 hanging from the back of the car part looks like they borrowed a dummy from Super Dave Osbourne. The only problem I have with this is Edward Furlong. Please, please, please don't cast shitty child actors, arrggh. But it could've been much worse,Temple Of Doom(Dr Jones!,shudder). |
