The Long Kiss Goodnight (1996, R)
Ok action film that wastes a good premise, the old story of the amnesiac who turns out to be a government assassin. The twist here is that's it a cookie baking housewife/schoolteacher.Geena Davis is good as the hitwoman and Samuel L Jackson does a nice comic job as the PI helping her rediscover her past, but the film is flatly directed with lifeless action scenes. And speaking of the action, there's not much of it,in one scene in particular,we hear the action, not see it as it's from the point of view of a captive being rescued.Alright it's all fine and good to go the Hitchcock route, but in a supposed action film? It's suprising about the action scenes as this was directed by Renny Harlin, who did a good job with action in Die Hard 2 and Cliffhanger, but then again,he did make Cutthroat Island as well.Another negative, the villian is a smug, annoying creep who you get no real sense of menace from.Incredibly, the script by Lethal Weapon writer Shane Black, sold for 3 million dollars back in the mid 90's! |
