The Departed
Wow.I mean just...wow.I expected this to be good, but what I got was the best damn movie I've seen in a long time and easily the best movie I've seen this year.I've never been a big Dicaprio fan but he won me over with his performance here.He did a terrific job,in fact the cast was excellent across the board with Jack Nicholson being a standout of course. The movie is 2 and a half hours but it barrels along,I didn't feel the time at all.It was nice to see a movie where I didn't know where it was going.Movies have gotten awfully predictable lately it seems.Welcome back Martin Scorsese, great to see you in the crime genre again. The best film of 2006.
15
The Descent (2006,  R)
The Descent
Good horror flick about some spelunkers running into creatures in some underground caves, although it is basically a hodgepodge of 6-7 other horror movies.Well made and acted.
16
Jet Li's Fearless (Huo Yuan Jia) (Legend of a Fighter) (2006,  PG-13)
17
Final Destination 3 (2006,  R)
Final Destination 3
Poor excuse for a horror film, what a suprise,eh?Hell, there's not even any decent gore since a lot of it seems to have been done with cgi so it looks too slick. But they did throw in some gratuitous nudity this time so that gets them some points, but enough already. The've made the same movie 3 times now.I know that's true of the Friday the 13th films but at least those are entertaining. This is just a bunch of Dawson's Creek wannabes being killed off in increasingly ridiculous and overcomplicated ways.

Firewall (2006,  PG-13)
Firewall
Man what happened to Harrison Ford, like Deniro and Pacino,he just doesn't seem to give a shit anymore, like starring in mediocre crap like this. His last good film was The Fugitive which was back in 1993.Ouch.I would love to see him do something really kickass but with him dragging Indiana Jones out of the mothballs,it doesn't look like it's going to happen anytime soon.
19
Flags of Our Fathers (2006,  R)
20
Flushed Away (2006,  PG)
21
The Good Shepherd (2006,  R)
22
The Hills Have Eyes (2006,  R)
The Hills Have Eyes
Pretty good remake, extremely brutal in parts.I can't believe this got an R rating. One of the mutants looked and sounded way too much like Sloth from The Goonies!I expected Chunk to show up and do the truffle shuffle. But the rest of the makeup effects were really good.
23
Hollywoodland (2006,  R)
24
Hostel (2006,  R)
Hostel
Mediocre and overhyped.I've seen much worse as far as gore goes and much better movies as far as story goes.Ah the power of an ad campaign.
25
Inside Man (2006,  R)
Inside Man
Solid heist flick, very well made an acted, particularly by Clive Owen and Denzel Washington. It has a pretty familiar plot as it does conform to the heist movie blueprint but it does try to go off in some unique directions as far as the plot goes.
26
The Last Kiss (2006,  R)
27
Lucky Number Slevin (2006,  R)
28
Miami Vice (2006,  R)
Miami Vice
A disappointment from director Michael Mann. There's moments in this where you're supposed to be affected and care
about what happens to the characters but you don't get to really know them except for Coin Farrell's character.Farrell does a decent job but Jamie Foxx is weak in this, his smooth tough guy act is laughable. And once again we get a bs romance subplot that adds a good 30-40 minutes to the movie without adding anything of substance.I mean you just don't care, frankly.Could hae been much better.Watch Heat or Collateral instead.
29
Mission: Impossible III (2006,  PG-13)
Mission: Impossible III
Suprisingly good action film, very good actually.I wasn't expecting much from this but I shouldn't be suprised as JJ Abrams co-wrote and directed it and he brings the feel of the tv show Alias(which I dug),which he created,to this.(albeit on a huge budget)The plot was unpredictable at points, which is almost unheard of in action films these days. There's some very cool action sequences here, the film moves at a fast pace and the storyline kept me interested. My only complaint would be a miscast Phillip Seymour Hoffman as the villain,he's very dull and looks like he'd rather be somewhere else.Clearly a just for the paycheck job.Otherwise, worth checking out for action fans.
30
Monster House (2006,  PG)
Monster House
Entertaining animated throwback to 80's kids oriented fare(Goonies,Gremlins etc.,like those it's produced by Steven Speilberg)about a possessed house.Probably too scary for very young kids but older kids would probably like it.
31
The Night Listener (2006,  R)
32
The Omen (2006,  R)
33
El Laberinto del Fauno (Pan's Labyrinth) (2006,  R)
34
Perfume: The Story of a Murderer (2006,  R)
35
The Prestige (2006,  PG-13)
The Prestige
Very cool movie about rival magicians in the late 19th century.Very well made and acted, with two very good performances from Bale and Jackman and it even has David Bowie in a small but important role. This may not be for everyone as it does go off into some far out places by the end and the two lead characters are pretty damaged people. But for those who are game you'll be rewarded. One of the best films of 2006.
36
The Protector (Tom yum goong) (Warrior King) (2005,  R)
37
The Return (2006,  PG-13)
38
Rocky Balboa (2006,  PG)
39
Running Scared (2006,  R)
Running Scared
This was alright, although it was way over the top all the way through, with a lot of weird for weird's sake shit in it.Like the John Wayne obsessed russian neighbor, the whole part with the pedophile couple, the hockey pucks to the face in the arena under black lights and so on and so on.The impressive thing about this was that Paul Walker gave a decent performance, something I didn't think humanly possible. On the other hand the kid playing the russian guy's son was terrible as usual. They should put this kid in a zombie movie,it'd be perfect casting as he sleepwalks through every frigging movie he's in.
40
A Scanner Darkly (2006,  R)
41
School for Scoundrels (2006,  PG-13)
42
Silent Hill (2006,  R)
Silent Hill
Easily the best video game movie ever made, which isn't saying much, but this is a solid little horror movie with some freaky scenes.I had a problem with some of the music from the games being used, which took me out of the movie and the lead actress was weak in parts. The ending was a head scratcher, and not in a good way, more like what the hell happened?.But oh well,it's got some very good atmosphere and some disturbing scenes.Worth a look.
43
16 Blocks (2006,  PG-13)
44
Slither (2006,  R)
45
Snakes on a Plane (2006,  R)
46
Superman Returns (2006,  PG-13)
47
Chinjeolhan geumjassi (Lady Vengeance) (Sympathy for Lady Vengeance) (2005,  R)
48
Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning (2006,  R)
Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning
So-so prequel to the successful 2003 remake. This is supposed to explain why Leatherface is the way he is,but I thinks he's scarier when he just a crazy fuck with a chainsaw who seems to be retarded. Here he seems way too macho, like a moody teenager or something.I love R Lee Ermey as much as the next guy,but there was too much of his character and not enough Leatherface. They throw in a vietnam vet character who never really does anything,so that seems like a wasted opportunity.Skippable.
49
Thank You For Smoking (2005,  R)
50
Ultraviolet (2006,  PG-13)
Ultraviolet
Not a very good movie.Apparently it was taken out of the director's hands and recut by the studio so maybe there's a lost masterpiece out there but I doubt it.The effects are shockingly bad, they look like they were done on someones's home pc and the acting and dialogue is mediocre at best. The action scenes are outrageously over the top, almost laughably so and the hand to hand combat scenes are rehashes of Equilibrium, the director's previous(and superior)film.A disappointment.
51
Underworld: Evolution (2006,  R)
Underworld: Evolution
Not a bad little movie, silly as all hell if you took it even remotely serious but as just pure entertainment,it does it job.I still liked the first one a little better, this one was more horror and gore and less action oriented than the original.Scott Speedman still annoyed me but not as much this time around. He also looks a little more montrous when he turns into the hybrid instead of a guy who got dipped in black paint. They're were some good makeup effects in this as well, the main villain's bat form was pretty impressive.Worth a look.
52
V for Vendetta (2006,  R)
V for Vendetta
Really cool flick about a freedom fighter(terrorist?)going against a totalitarian government in 2020 London. An interesting story punctuated by kickass action scenes(particularly the ending)and the best vocal performance since Darth Vader.V is a very cool character(although he does look a bit like Zorro by way of the Phantom of the Opera)
53
The Wicker Man (2006,  PG-13)
54
X-Men: The Last Stand (2006,  PG-13)
X-Men: The Last Stand
The worst of the three X-men movies. There was a lot of lameness to this,a lot. They barely did anything with the Dark Phoenix storyline,Angel was barely in it,Halle Berry sucked once again, they killed a major character for no reason other than to create "drama".I could go on and on.Oh yeah, can't forget what a horrible a job they did with Juggernaut, just a terrible design.Beast, while true to the comics in character and design, was still annoying cause, well,he's Kelsey Grammer and he's a shitty actor. And oh God,Wolverine's "way to go furball" line,I wanted to hang my head in shame over that one.The only good stuff in this was a couple of decent effects sequences, but five minutes of ok effects work does not a good movie make.Forgettable.
