Friends With Money (2006,  R)
Friends With Money 1.5 Stars
Wry slice of life and sharp observations about marriage and money. Stupid ending though.

Ok, don't like the whole male escort part, but I really like Debra Messing in this movie, and the view and scenery of the countryside is really breathtaking.

Not a fan of Leo, though his performance was pretty good. A grand fashion movie.

A brutally intense drama. Bale makes yet another psychotic character utterly believable in this ugly, visceral portrait of society's underbelly. Gripping.

Decided to watch this after watching 'Match Point' cos it was great, though I dislike Woody Allen. Below expectations. Not a fan of Hugh Jackman. Hate Scarlett. She makes everything look like porn. Why does Woody Allen HAVE to appear in almost all his movies?

Slick action-thriller is lively and entertaining until a quarter of the way through, when it goes flat and credibility becomes a serious issue.

Caricatures, cliches, and painfully unfunny slapstick sequences ruin the movie.

Watchable globe-trotting thriller is weakened by lapses of credibility, but boosted by Gere's performance. Aren't there better ways to acquire a weapon?

Touched on important world issues without being too preachy or documentary-like. Very good performances by Leo, Djimon Hounsou, and Jennifer Connolly.

A tight, knowingly hokey thriller that actually thrills. The director masterfully manipulates the audience using familiar conventions. The two leads have chemistry.

Boring, boring, boring. Couldn't wait to leave the cinema. Why did Olivier Martinez sink so low? An added star just for the scenery of Bucharest.

Marie Antoinette (2006,  PG-13)
Marie Antoinette 3.0 Stars
Told from Marie Antoinette's viewpoint, but I still can't help feeling sorry for her husband rather than her. Felt Rose Byrne took centre stage rather than Dunst. Sophia Coppola's take on female characters once again shines through. Good effort.

Eerie, weirdly compelling psychological thriller that shows the workings of the subconscious and is full of literary nuances. Beautifully designed and shot. Bale's mere presence is disturbing.

My favourite movie to date hands down. Watched it countless times. Bale's best performance thus far. Wonderfully cast, except Scarlett, who looks out of place with her Malibu Barbie looks. Great movie by Chris Nolan. Can we expect anything less? A masterpiece.

First romantic role by Edward Norton. Even though it was set in Austria, it was filmed in Prague. Prague was beautiful though, so I'll let that slide. 'The Prestige' was way better.

Liked the plot. However, don't you think if she was the devil's child, she would inflict more terror than just making doors creak? Ending seems to pave the way for a sequel.

The Number 23 (2007,  R)
The Number 23 2.5 Stars
Didn't really engage me as much as I would like it to. Jim Carrey doesn't do a convincing job playing a serious role. Was half expecting him to do something ridiculous or say something funny the whole time, which is typical of Jim Carrey. In the context of a movie about obsession, 'The Machinist' was much better.

The Painted Veil (2006,  PG-13)
The Painted Veil 4.0 Stars
I feel that the movie is a depiction of an actual relationship, a depiction of the way that people fall in love with their illusions about somebody as much as with the real person. Then the pain and the difficulty and the disenchantment that comes when those things fall away. The notion of a couple getting through the difficult act of forgiveness and an unexpected chance at redemption make the movie more meaningful than it normally would. A love story told backwards.

Didn't like the movie. James McAvoy tried his best to make his character lovable, and the pretty girl isn't your typical dumb blonde. The saving grace of the movie was Rebecca Hall - the sarcastic and witty political student. Overall below expectations.

A WW2 movie told through the viewpoint of the British. Ambitious, Spielberg seems pretty self-indulgent here - 3 hours long. Christian Bale's acting debut. This guy's got pure talent written all over him.
