Bushi no Ichibun (Love and Honor) (2007, PG-13)
this is a beautiful film. the close of yoji yamada's loose samurai trilogy, this film catches a seemingly cliche theme of a man looking for sight through blind eyes and makes something extrordinary and anything but cliche. the diologue is poetic and tragic and the story is passionate and heart felt. the acting, music, and direction were amazing and the cinematography was as good as it gets. yamada should never stop making period pieces, all three from the trilogy of films with similar themes were mind blowing. this will be one of my most rewatched films in years to come. |

The Departed (2006, R)
best scorcese film ever. unbelievable. youre enthraled through the entire story. dicaprio is already one of my favorites, but this is one of his best performances, he was brillliant. damons performance is overlooked and the end is shocking and suprising, even disturbing really. i havent stopped thinking about this film since i watched it, nearly perfect. |

Letters from Iwo Jima (2006, R)
incredible. one of the best films ive seen in the last year. extremely sad and realistic. ken watanabe was fantastic and the direction was great. you can see the samurai honored culture maintain in soldier life clear into the 20th century, the japanese may fight differently than we do, but the film does a great job of showing the true humanity of all people on all sides of war. one of the greatest war films of all time. |

Deja Vu (2006, PG-13)
fantastic film. a sci-fi set in contemporary time about people who can see the past as its happening. i know that doesnt make sense, how can you see something thats already happened as its happening, you just have to watch the film. denzel takes this film to a level it probably couldnt have reached with another actor, and jim caviezel plays a great bad guy. you really have to think this film through for it to make sense, but when enough thought is put to it i dont see how anyone could not think of this film as fantastic. |

Das Leben der Anderen (The Lives of Others) (2006, R)
what a wonderful film. this film definitely deserved the oscar that it recieved last year for best foreign film, it was even better than pans laberynth. the plot was amazing and creative, the actors were incredible and it was a great portrayal of berlin before the wall came down. the story was also complete, something rare in cinema these days. i felt satisfied at the end that i knew the entire story. i HIGHLY recommend this film to anyone who can sit through a foreign film. wonderful. |

Brick (2006, R)
suprisingly fantastic. i had no interest in this film until a friend made me watch it and i was pleasantly suprised. the premise sounds stupid, this is basically a film about high school kids playing mobster. but they pull it off well. levitt was much better than i thought he would be since he was playing a tough guy, but he was great. "the brain" was also a great character, he and the main charactr play off of each other very well. highly recommended. |

The Prestige (2006, PG-13)
fantastic movie. it wasnt quite as good as i had hoped, because i love the direction of christopher nolan and im a big scarlet johansson fan i thought this might be a 5 star flick, but it was still incredible. great twists, great acting. michael caine was brilliant as always. unfortunately i compared this to the illusionist since it came out about the same time and i liked the illusionist better. i loved this flick though. |

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest (2006, PG-13)
This was a very solid sequel. it wasnt quite as good as the first because i think it was trying to hard to be adventurous, leading it into some scenes that were too over the top, but the story was great and the movie was more fun than most films that ive ever seen. some of the diologue could have been better and some of the things emphasized in the first film were not emphasized at all in this one, like the glory and feared nature of the black pearl, but overall it was very good. im intrigued enough to be fully anticipating the third film which i will be seeing this weekend. |

Black Book (Zwartboek) (2007, R)
this is a great war film and one of the best french films i have ever seen. i would have rated it an entire star higher were it not for the gratuitous smut given me on three different occasions in the film, but aside from this dissapointing element the film was brilliant. the story was flawless and well executed, the cinematography was solid, and the actors were great. a solid tale of the french resistence to nazi rule, i was gripped the entire way through. you see the characters evolve and develop so well that i cared about each of them. wonderful movie. |

Children of Men (2006, R)
this was an amazing film. i was inclined to think that this was one of the top films of 2006 until the end, but the end was so ubrupt, incomplete, and unsatisfying that it dropped a full star off of my score. however, the film leading up until that last few minutes was amazing, edge of your seat and intruiging. micheal caine was great as always and clive owen really delivered in this one. this film portrays a scary future that mankind would do well to avoid at all costs. |

Man cheng jin dai huang jin jia (Curse of the Golden Flower) (2006, R)
pretty good film. visually beautiful and well acted. the film was void of diologue and charactr building and it was overly simple in some ways but what the actors didnt say with their words they said with their eyes and facial expressions. jai was realy the only likeable character, but the story was compelling enough to make this movie very good. |

The Proposition (2005, R) |

Apocalypto (2006, R)
this was a great flick. it had the feel i was expecting but the plot was more basic than i thought it would be. i was expecting a film about tribes battling each other, this was more of a rambo, 1 on 10 sort of movie. i have to admit the waring tribes would have been better, and i expected this film to be better, but it was still really good. the acting was great from some unknowns and the effects were fantastic, but if this exact film was done with an american plot it would have starred sly stallone or steven segal and gone relatively unnoticed. |

The Lost City (2005, R)
really great film for a directorial debut by andy garcia. he also does a great job acting in this one. bill murray plays a small role but steals the movie in all of his scenes. his character is even pointless, but he makes the film more entertaining. good flick that i recommend about the rise of fidel castro in cuba. the cast was great and the story flowed well. |
|
| 42 |
The Fountain (2006, PG-13)
this is one of the most unorthodox films i have ever seen. i have never seen direction like this and the pattern with which the story was told was so different than anything i think has ever been done in film. the concept of the film was great, good acting and great plot, but i cant help but feel that this film didnt quite live up to the potential that comes with such an amazing idea. using the tree of life from Genesis was very cool, but the plot could have made for an epic adventure, instead we got a somewhat confusing film that some may see as creative and others may see as wierd and strange. |

Ultimate Avengers 2: Rise of the Panther (2006, PG-13)
this one was not quite as good as the first, but it was a really good movie. i enjoyed both of these alot giving me great hope for the future of this line of animated films being put out by marvel. the battle with the hulk in the first one was hard to live up to, but this film had its own bright spots, and while i think that while captain america shined brightest in the first film, i loved thor in this one. good movie worth seeing again. |
|
| 44 |
Bandidas (2007, PG-13) |
|
| 45 |
The Holiday (2006, PG-13)
an above average picture about finding love in the least expected places. the best part of this movie was the theme surrounding film itself, from the careers of the characters to the reverence for classic film, and there were some bright spots that made this enjoyable, but i never really felt connected to the characters. kate winslet shined as usual, and ultimately it was a good watch for future christmas' every few years or so. |

The Namesake (2006, PG-13)
this is a really good film. universal ideals seen from two different cultures make this film profound. a few of the performances of the actors were really good and the story was strong. unfortunately the first hour of the film was much stronger than the second, the story veered off in some odd directions and the music lost its focus, but thankfully the last 15 minutes steered the film back on course and it finished well. overall it was a very good movie. |

Invincible (2006, PG) |

Open Season (2006, PG)
this was a decent flick. i dont care for ashton kutcher and martin lawrence is hit and miss, but they were both good as the main voices. it had a good story and a few funny moments, my son thought it was funny. better than i thought it would be and definitely worth watching if you have nothing better to do. |

The Architect (2006, R)
this movie is hard to rate. its very story driven which is good, and the stories that are presented are very good. the telling of the stories however is not good at all. this film follows the unfortunate indi film trend of leaving a story incomplete at the end. the problem is that this film is only 1hr and 11 min. they could have used another 30 min to finish telling the stories. much of the diologue is unexplained and doesnt seem to fit the story and some of the actions of the characters have no context so they dont make sense. i give it a decent rating on potential, hayden is good in this flick and the movie could have been great with more time. |

Everyone's Hero (2006, G)
really cool kids flick. great story and fun to watch, especially with your kids if you have them. the only problem was the end, the last 15 minutes were dumb even for a kids movie. there are other directions the movie could have gone at the end to still be feel good without being stupid, but this one is still worth watching especially if you love baseball. |
|
| 51 |
A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints (2006, R)
the acting in this one was fantastic. the story was fairly pointless and you cant really connect with the characters, really just a well acted movie about random kids that are not all that different from most of us. the direction was the most interesting part. a debut for this director, it was unlike any direction that ive ever seen. you will either love the way that he made this film or you will hate it. i thought the direction was pretty good. |

| 52 |
Autumn (2006, Unrated)
i wanted to love this film, and i definitely liked it quite a bit, but ultimately it fell a bit flat. often good movies are made good through the details, and the details are where this film stummbled. the film was well shot and the story was great but it was ill-explained. i love thinking in movies but i had to think about things in this film that i shouldnt have had to think about because the pieces werent put together well enough. good flick however. |

Azumi (2003, Unrated)
this movie is hard to describe. its like xena and hercules meets elektra meets shogun assassin meets pirates of the caribean with the soundtrack from top gun. in the spirit of samurai films this is a terrible movie, but if you ignore the samurai element and just look at this as an action flick its entertaining. the end got a little silly but it intrigued me enough to want to watch the sequel. some of the fighting was over the top but other fighting scenes were very good. there were a ton of wholes in this film but its watcheable on many levels. |

| 54 |
The Good German (2006, R)
this was a pretty good flick, definitely worth the watch. the acting and cinemetography were fantastic and the idea was great, but it could have been executed a little better. the big problem was the end, the last 5 minutes were very dry and left me unsatisfied, i couldnt help but feel that the story was incomplete. shot in black and white with a 1950's feel to it, ive seen enough old films to know that they did a good job creating that nior expirience. |

The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada (2006, R) |

The Last Kiss (2006, R)
i was pretty dissapointed in this flick. basically its a film about winy women on a power tripp and disfunctional men that cant take care of their own business. there isnt a single normal character in the film. i was even uncomfortable while watching this movie because none of the characters could stay out of their own way. there were a few funny lines that make the movie watcheable which is why i give more than half a star. |
|
| 66 |
The Black Dahlia (2006, R)
who else but brian depalma could take a phenomenal cast and one of the most interesting murders in american history and turn it into a sloppy mess on screen. johanssons polarizing presence on screen is all that saves this horrible film from reaching the depths of film making. the story was incoherent at best, and most of the film was spent on things that had nothing to do with the tale at hand. what a waste of film. |

Bring It On: All or Nothing (2006, PG-13)
before you judge me just know that i watched this while trying to sleep and my wife had it on the t.v. in the bedroom. its not that i couldnt sleep because i was interested, its that i couldnt sleep because watching this was like watching the slaughter of cows in a meat factory. its terrible but you cant take your eyes off it. the second worst film in the history of the world without question. oh the horror. |
