Ratatouille (2007, G)
This film is fantastic! Oscar-winning director and screenwriter Brad Bird, who wrote and directed "The Incredibles", has produced a film with subtle humor, heart, and very profound truth. The voice actors are so great, and it is especially great to hear Peter O'Toole on the screen. The animation is beautiful and it is all around an excellently made film. Its message is one that holds so much truth for everyone, especially today's youth: it tells people that no, not anyone can do anything, but if you have the talent you don't have to be limited by your surroundings or your upbringing. I think this is refreshing to hear because often, children are lied to when they are told they can do anything, when actually not all of them can. But it offers hope to the ones who may feel limited by their social class. It also exposes the fact that most people try to put up false facades of themselves to hide who they are in order to feel accepted by the social standards we create in our society; it shows characters with this flaw, but ultimately they accept this reality and learn to be true to themselves. This thread, I think, is very common throughout the Pixar films, and they present it very well. |

This Is England (2007, Unrated)
There is no doubt that this film is a truly great piece of film-making. Shane Meadows crafts films in the same style as Martin Scorsese. We are given a glimpse into the lifestyle of a group of characters over a short period of time. It is very much a fly on the wall type of movie. The point of these films is to understand the actions of the characters rather than judging their actions. I have no doubt that there will be some people that tag this film as being racist which is rather missing the point. |

The Bourne Ultimatum (2007, PG-13)
This trilogy has some together so nicely, that I believe it to be one of the greatest motion picture trilogies of all time. Though all three films could not by any more different from the Ludlum novels, they still stood as a powerful landmark in cinematic achievement. The Bourne Ultimatum made me want to cry that the series was complete, yet I could not even attempt to stop smiling for hours. From the moment that the opening title appeared, I know we were in for a ride. Paul Greengrass has done it again. Everything we love from the previous Bourne films is here once again! The action, the dialogue, and of course the shaky camera. However for me, that last one was never a problem. I think it adds to the suspense. I will be back to see this film several times before it is release on DVD, simply because it is genius. It is a perfectly satisfying conclusion and should stand the test of time as a fantastic movie, and altogether, an unforgettable trilogy. |

Michael Clayton (2007, R)
For me, knowing that George Clooney is in a film is enough to make me want to see it, even if the title gives no indication of the genre or subject. In fact, this is a thriller in which Clooney as the eponymous "fixer" for a powerful New York legal form is rarely off the screen and gives a performance both commanding and compelling. I'm a great believer that the opening and closing of a movie are critical and this movie could be a text-box case of how to do it. Our attention and interest are seized from the opening seconds and the conclusion is satisfyingly sharp and redemptive. |

Beowulf (2007, PG-13)
Another disappointment from Robert Zemeckis. Supposedly a heroic epic, this film lands a bit short of everything it intends to accomplish. Highly sophisticated motion capture technique was supposed to bring real world actors' facial expressions to a new level in animation, but what did they achieve? Good resemblance, but nothing more. There is absolutely nothing in their faces, no pain, no anger, angst, or even genuine smiles. The film itself could have been entertaining but instead was boring from the first minute. Also, the dialogue were tremendously stupid - and please remember that we are talking here about one of the most widely studied artifacts in Anglo-Saxon literary. Maybe, if you are willing to forget everything that was told around this film and simply take it as another animated film, you will like it - I would not bet on it, though. I am really sorry I am so negative; I was very much looking forward to seeing this movie but was disappointed in every possible way |

Rendition (2007, R)
There's a good movie here. It's probably about seventy-five minutes long. Unfortunately, this cut is two hours long and moves a pace that would have a snail beeping its horn and trying to overtake in frustration. Shots go on for centuries, scenes seem endless. It's well-shot and it's about an important subject, but it just goes on and on and on and... |

Spider-Man 3 (2007, PG-13)
I've seen Spider-Man 3 the first day it came out. I was disappointed. The movie(I think) was the worst out of three; my favorite being the second, anyway they poorly wrote it, the dialogue was awful, and the beginning was jumping all over the place. They rushed the movie, and there were random scenes-like for example the butler coming out of nowhere and finally telling Harry what happens to his father. Venom didn't have enough screen time and was definitely, rushed. Too much crying and unnecessary dancing. Making Peter look emo was laughable I practically fell out of my seat. Oh, I forgot to mention the bad character development it had. I didn't fall in love with the characters or believe they were real people at any moment; in the second one I felt remorse for Doc Ock and new what he was going though; in this one I knew they were characters written on paper. I was excited about the movie, was really looking forward to seeing. I wanted to like it, but I didn't. A huge let down and I came out of the theater somewhat regretting seeing it. Other than that it did have some good action sequences and the funny Bruce Campbell cameo, but that's all. |

August Rush (2007, PG)
This movie can't decide if it wants to be whimsical for the kids or moving/romantic for adults. I took a 9 year. First, it needs a good editor. Then edit out most of Robin Williams who is pedophile-creepy. I found it unrealistic, dull, and slow. Freddie Highmore did horrible in this film compared to "Charlie." He had only two faces throughout the whole thing. Straight, and smiling. That was it. I also didn't like the cheesiness with "listening to music." Music doesn't bind us together all the time. Music is fun to listen to, enjoyable, but movies ABOUT music, aren't very. The soundtrack for a movie was no "Phantom Of The Opera." It wasn't catchy, or great. The rest of the acting was OK, directing was bad, soundtrack was not very good, and the writing wasn't interesting. Overall, this movie I wouldn't suggest to anyone. It's just not that good..... |

Resident Evil: Extinction (2007, R)
The increasingly tired premise of a zombie - producing virus has been around for some years, having replaced the seductive living dead mystery of prior generations. I don't expect much of horror films, but I expected more than this. RE:E is just silly. |

We Own the Night (2007, R)
Pretty dull stuff. The plot is predictable. The story line and resolution are hackneyed and familiar. A waste of the talents of Robert Duvall and Eva Mendes. Phoenix and Wahlberg act bored throughout the film and frankly they are better in other films. An hour and a half I will never get back again. I felt cheated as I could have seen Michael Clayton instead and chose this film based on what now appears to be hack reviews. The dialog was awful, there was no feel of New York about it despite the exterior shots, and very little feeling of a much needed plot element...menace. |

No Country for Old Men (2007, R)
The Coen brothers once again prove they are brilliant film-makers, and two of the best working today. "No Country for Old Men" is haunting, gritty, and at times, brutal. The cast is all around brilliant, and Javier Bardem gives an extraordinary performance of a psychopathic killer. One of the most interesting aspects of the film(for me) is lack of a musical score, and that may be disliked by some, but I think it makes it more terrifying. Another great thing about this film is Roger Deakin's cinematography (which is always amazing). |

Atonement (2007, R)
This film came together like poetry, the beautiful direction, excellent performances, and a wonderfully written script. The most memorable and powerful scene in the film is the continuous shot on Dunkirk that last five minutes. We can see the chaos of Dunkirk and it's so beautifully captured by Joe Wright's direction, Seamus McGarvey's cinematography, and Dario Marianelli's breathtaking score. At the end of the scene you are left almost speechless, and by the end of the film you want to cry. All of this easily makes "Atonement" one of the best films of 2007 |

The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford (2007, R)
This is really a great movie, one of the best of the year. Not much of a typical western, its more like a psychological thriller with some moments of drama. A very interesting story about Jesse James, his last year alive, about Robert Ford, His obsession with Jesse James and his reasons to kill him. A very convincing and well developed plot. Beautiful photography, the landscapes shown in the movie are simply amazing. The music is also very good, every score fits to the perfection to the mood of every scene. The direction by Andrew Dominik is incredible, he delivers a slow rhythm yet enjoyable movie. It has a cast of wonderful actors beginning with Casey Affleck that is constantly evolving in his performances, Brad Pitt that is already a custom to watch him in perfect acting roles, Sam Rockwell excellent in his supporting role and Sam Sheppard with a brief but convincing appearance. To conclude, this is a great masterpiece, a must see movie and an Oscar nomination worthy. |

Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2007, R)
Here we have another dark Tim Burton film. After seeing several of his previous works, you can almost always expect violence and a grim tale. There is quite a bit of blood and gore in the film, so don't let the idea of a musical deter you. However, the acting and diologue are rock solid. The cast of this movie is magical. Of course Johnny, need I say more. Helena Carter, most famously known from Fight Club, also is an amazing supporting role. The story is a beautiful tale of revenge and love, which will keep you on the edge of your seat. If I would have to compare this film to previous Tim Burton films, I would say a mix of Edward Scissorhands and Sleepy Hollow. It has that dark and violent content, mixed with a strong central character. I am telling you people, you will enjoy this show. |

Persepolis (2007, PG-13)
Persepolis is a lovingly, hand drawn animated feature film from France, that tells the story of a young girl growing up in Iran, the daughter of left wing revolutionary parents, during the Islamic revolution. It spans something like 13 years in her life, from childhood, adolescence to early adulthood. It was taken from a graphic novel, published in France. Most of the prints in circulation are the French language version, but there is an English dubbed version (I thankfully saw the original French version, with English subtitles). What I really admired was the carefully nuanced use of color (most of the flashback sequences are in black & white). In an era that is now overblown with 3D computer generated animation, it's refreshing to see somebody kicking it old school style (hand drawn). This is a film that is worth seeking out. |

[Rec] (2007, R)
This is the kind of movie that you go to the cinema and watch, and then haunts you for weeks. Not that it will make you afraid of the dark or it will make you question your vision of life. This is the kind of movie that is all about the experience, the feeling, the atmosphere. This is the kind of movie you wish you hadn't seen because then you'd be able to experience it again for the first time. |

Wonder why almost everyone who writes a comment on this movie ticks the "spoiler" box? Because when you have said "the girl has teeth in his vagina, castrates every few boys that sleeps with here, which is good because every guy around her is a total ass", you said it all , honestly. In the first half of the film, nothing really happens and it's boring. Chastity groups satire? What, they still exist? Man, a satire of those is surely the most funny thing to be seen, no? Er... no. |

Enchanted (2007, PG)
Looks like Disney done it again; I am sure this movie will become an instant classic. I went in to the movie with pretty high expectations, and I must say I wasn't disappointed in the slightest. Amy Adams as Giselle was simply a joy to watch and James Marsden as Prince Edward was hilarious. Susan Sarandon as Queen Narissa was appropriately sinister and vile. Alan Menken's music was beautiful and, in a word, enchanting. Adams has a lovely singing voice, which I found a pleasant surprise. I especially enjoyed the tongue in cheek humor. Disney did a great job parodying their typical style, but at the same time, it was not overdone. Some of my favorite sequences were done as a parody. I found myself laughing (out loud) harder during this movie than any movie I have seen in a very long time. I especially enjoyed the over all clean-ness of the movie. There wasn't anything that I would be uncomfortable letting a young child see, which is a breath of fresh air in today's entertainment world. The story was engaging, the ending was happy but not over the top sappy, and the song and dance numbers were so much fun. |
