Ratatouille (2007,  G)
Ratatouille
This film is fantastic! Oscar-winning director and screenwriter Brad Bird, who wrote and directed "The Incredibles", has produced a film with subtle humor, heart, and very profound truth. The voice actors are so great, and it is especially great to hear Peter O'Toole on the screen. The animation is beautiful and it is all around an excellently made film. Its message is one that holds so much truth for everyone, especially today's youth: it tells people that no, not anyone can do anything, but if you have the talent you don't have to be limited by your surroundings or your upbringing. I think this is refreshing to hear because often, children are lied to when they are told they can do anything, when actually not all of them can. But it offers hope to the ones who may feel limited by their social class. It also exposes the fact that most people try to put up false facades of themselves to hide who they are in order to feel accepted by the social standards we create in our society; it shows characters with this flaw, but ultimately they accept this reality and learn to be true to themselves. This thread, I think, is very common throughout the Pixar films, and they present it very well.

This Is England (2007,  Unrated)
This Is England
There is no doubt that this film is a truly great piece of film-making. Shane Meadows crafts films in the same style as Martin Scorsese. We are given a glimpse into the lifestyle of a group of characters over a short period of time. It is very much a fly on the wall type of movie. The point of these films is to understand the actions of the characters rather than judging their actions. I have no doubt that there will be some people that tag this film as being racist which is rather missing the point.

The film follows Shaun a 12 year old being borough up in early 80's England. He has lost his father in the Falklands war and suffers bullying and isolation until he is befriended by a group of skinheads. The happy band are challenged when Combo is released from prison. Thomas Turgoose is good in the lead role and the direction/screenplay are also spot on the mark. The film is based on Meadow's own childhood and is quite mesmerizing at times.

I was gripped throughout the film and it also gave me plenty to think about afterwards. What more can you ask for when going to the movies? I suppose if you go to the movies for escapism then go watch something else, but if you want a gripping thought provoking drama then it doesn't come much better than this. Outstanding!

The Bourne Ultimatum (2007,  PG-13)
The Bourne Ultimatum
This trilogy has some together so nicely, that I believe it to be one of the greatest motion picture trilogies of all time. Though all three films could not by any more different from the Ludlum novels, they still stood as a powerful landmark in cinematic achievement. The Bourne Ultimatum made me want to cry that the series was complete, yet I could not even attempt to stop smiling for hours. From the moment that the opening title appeared, I know we were in for a ride. Paul Greengrass has done it again. Everything we love from the previous Bourne films is here once again! The action, the dialogue, and of course the shaky camera. However for me, that last one was never a problem. I think it adds to the suspense. I will be back to see this film several times before it is release on DVD, simply because it is genius. It is a perfectly satisfying conclusion and should stand the test of time as a fantastic movie, and altogether, an unforgettable trilogy.

Michael Clayton (2007,  R)
Michael Clayton
For me, knowing that George Clooney is in a film is enough to make me want to see it, even if the title gives no indication of the genre or subject. In fact, this is a thriller in which Clooney as the eponymous "fixer" for a powerful New York legal form is rarely off the screen and gives a performance both commanding and compelling. I'm a great believer that the opening and closing of a movie are critical and this movie could be a text-box case of how to do it. Our attention and interest are seized from the opening seconds and the conclusion is satisfyingly sharp and redemptive.

This is not an obviously commercial work: the title is utterly prosaic, the dialogue is wordy, the plot is often ambagious and the whole production concedes little to traditional entertainment values (no car chases or shoot-outs or special effects here). Instead the viewer is treated as intelligent - someone who wants tight direction, clever photography and above all fine acting rather than showy effects.

Although it is unquestionably Clooney's film, the support performances from Tom Wikinson and Tida Swinton plus that from veteran director Sydney Pollack are all excellent and such character - driven movie would never have happened without Tony Gilroy who it and - in an immensely able debut - directed it.

Beowulf (2007,  PG-13)
Beowulf
Another disappointment from Robert Zemeckis. Supposedly a heroic epic, this film lands a bit short of everything it intends to accomplish. Highly sophisticated motion capture technique was supposed to bring real world actors' facial expressions to a new level in animation, but what did they achieve? Good resemblance, but nothing more. There is absolutely nothing in their faces, no pain, no anger, angst, or even genuine smiles. The film itself could have been entertaining but instead was boring from the first minute. Also, the dialogue were tremendously stupid - and please remember that we are talking here about one of the most widely studied artifacts in Anglo-Saxon literary. Maybe, if you are willing to forget everything that was told around this film and simply take it as another animated film, you will like it - I would not bet on it, though. I am really sorry I am so negative; I was very much looking forward to seeing this movie but was disappointed in every possible way

Rendition
There's a good movie here. It's probably about seventy-five minutes long. Unfortunately, this cut is two hours long and moves a pace that would have a snail beeping its horn and trying to overtake in frustration. Shots go on for centuries, scenes seem endless. It's well-shot and it's about an important subject, but it just goes on and on and on and...

There are good things - there's a nice little twist at the end and Alan Arkin's good value - but everything just takes so long to happen. I'm not sure what the reason is for the languid pace. Maybe the filmmakers involved just thought that slow equals atmospheric, which it really doesn't. Maybe it's meant to reflect the fact that this isn't a one-off urgent special event, but a matter of daily routine. Maybe the studio just demanded a two hour film. Whatever the reason for the pace, it just breaks the movie.

It's a real shame, because there's a decent movie about an important subject in there somewhere.

Spider-Man 3 (2007,  PG-13)
Spider-Man 3
I've seen Spider-Man 3 the first day it came out. I was disappointed. The movie(I think) was the worst out of three; my favorite being the second, anyway they poorly wrote it, the dialogue was awful, and the beginning was jumping all over the place. They rushed the movie, and there were random scenes-like for example the butler coming out of nowhere and finally telling Harry what happens to his father. Venom didn't have enough screen time and was definitely, rushed. Too much crying and unnecessary dancing. Making Peter look emo was laughable I practically fell out of my seat. Oh, I forgot to mention the bad character development it had. I didn't fall in love with the characters or believe they were real people at any moment; in the second one I felt remorse for Doc Ock and new what he was going though; in this one I knew they were characters written on paper. I was excited about the movie, was really looking forward to seeing. I wanted to like it, but I didn't. A huge let down and I came out of the theater somewhat regretting seeing it. Other than that it did have some good action sequences and the funny Bruce Campbell cameo, but that's all.

August Rush (2007,  PG)
August Rush
This movie can't decide if it wants to be whimsical for the kids or moving/romantic for adults. I took a 9 year. First, it needs a good editor. Then edit out most of Robin Williams who is pedophile-creepy. I found it unrealistic, dull, and slow. Freddie Highmore did horrible in this film compared to "Charlie." He had only two faces throughout the whole thing. Straight, and smiling. That was it. I also didn't like the cheesiness with "listening to music." Music doesn't bind us together all the time. Music is fun to listen to, enjoyable, but movies ABOUT music, aren't very. The soundtrack for a movie was no "Phantom Of The Opera." It wasn't catchy, or great. The rest of the acting was OK, directing was bad, soundtrack was not very good, and the writing wasn't interesting. Overall, this movie I wouldn't suggest to anyone. It's just not that good.....

Resident Evil: Extinction (2007,  R)
Resident Evil: Extinction
The increasingly tired premise of a zombie - producing virus has been around for some years, having replaced the seductive living dead mystery of prior generations. I don't expect much of horror films, but I expected more than this. RE:E is just silly.

The cast is all here: evil corporation, out-of-control scientist, hapless minions who get locked in with the experiment gone wrong , multicultural gang of human fugitives strongly dressed in skimpy clothing and carrying military grade technology, etc. The story is advanced, but only in the direction of absurdity. Alice is still alive, but this time it would appear she's an android not only with super human agility and strength, but also with the ability to shut down satellites in space using her mind. She's always been one. And if that wasn't enough, she also psychic - with the ability to generate force fields around herself and her friends. Most of the zombies look alike this time, strangely clothed in identical gray jumpsuits. You can now kill them by cutting their throats, shooting them in the abdomen, or dropping them off a short building.

A few dozen overly loud bangs, crashes, and gunfights later and we get a showdown between Alice and the mutated evil doctor, carried out in a bad paste of unconnected rooms from previous films.

Close on a scene with the greedy corporate suits getting holographic warning of their impending doom from a snippy Alice, and you have a film designed to sell wholly on the game's reputation and not because it's sincerely engaging, scary, or even interesting.

We Own the Night (2007,  R)
We Own the Night
Pretty dull stuff. The plot is predictable. The story line and resolution are hackneyed and familiar. A waste of the talents of Robert Duvall and Eva Mendes. Phoenix and Wahlberg act bored throughout the film and frankly they are better in other films. An hour and a half I will never get back again. I felt cheated as I could have seen Michael Clayton instead and chose this film based on what now appears to be hack reviews. The dialog was awful, there was no feel of New York about it despite the exterior shots, and very little feeling of a much needed plot element...menace.

No Country for Old Men (2007,  R)
No Country for Old Men
The Coen brothers once again prove they are brilliant film-makers, and two of the best working today. "No Country for Old Men" is haunting, gritty, and at times, brutal. The cast is all around brilliant, and Javier Bardem gives an extraordinary performance of a psychopathic killer. One of the most interesting aspects of the film(for me) is lack of a musical score, and that may be disliked by some, but I think it makes it more terrifying. Another great thing about this film is Roger Deakin's cinematography (which is always amazing).

Before the Devil Knows You're Dead (2007,  R)
63
Atonement (2007,  R)
Atonement
This film came together like poetry, the beautiful direction, excellent performances, and a wonderfully written script. The most memorable and powerful scene in the film is the continuous shot on Dunkirk that last five minutes. We can see the chaos of Dunkirk and it's so beautifully captured by Joe Wright's direction, Seamus McGarvey's cinematography, and Dario Marianelli's breathtaking score. At the end of the scene you are left almost speechless, and by the end of the film you want to cry. All of this easily makes "Atonement" one of the best films of 2007

28 Weeks Later...
Bored the shit out of me. I never liked the first one, so I don't even know what lead me to watch the second one. Maybe the hype or my horror obsessed friend? I don't know, but I was bored to death. I won't even attempt to watch it again.

Death Sentence (2007,  R)
Death Sentence
I just got done from watching this movie and the only thing I can think of is. WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS!?!?!? Seriously, what the hell was I watching a dark thriller or a black comedy? I have never laughed so hard in my friggin life . . . it's pitiful.

Not even Kevin Bacon and John Goodman can save this film from James Wan shitty direction. The storyline and plot are crap. And did anyone else notice the "Taxi Driver" reference?

I never read the novel and lord knows I don't even plan to. The only reason I watched this movie was because of my horror-obsessed friend - yes he is a fan of Saw. The number of plot holes and cliché is uncountable. "Death Sentence" is as predictable a movie can get, and were we suppose to cry during the death of his son and murder of the rest of his family(though his son magically lives)? How the hell could I become emotional with such a crappy choice of music that does absolutely NOTHING to the scene, but make you laugh. Or how the police department didn't go searching like a mad man, when two of their own were killed . . . or maybe the fact they happen to put TWO cops to protect a family from a gang of EIGHT members, or however many there were. We can forget how dumb the detective was, yes I know you murdered those two gang members, but I'll let it go. WTF!?!?!? I can't even believe I got through this shit - I want to fucking kill myself now.

There is no bullet in the world that can hit Kevin Bacon - unless running in slow-mo. I could actually go on and name how stupid this movie truly is, but I'm sparing myself from remembering it. I can't even write a review on this crap, I'm ashamed!! Anyway, I just want to warn everyone NOT TO SEE THIS PIECE OF SHIT MOVIE!
67
I Am Legend (2007,  PG-13)
I Am Legend
So, I just got back from seeing this movie without any expectations. I saw it for the hell of it even when warned by friends. . . of course I end up going with the idiotic one.

I never read the book, but I assume the adaption is horrible(Hollywood always succeeds with that). Will Smith does the best he can in saving this movie, but it's so hard to do. The direction is bad(what's up with the video game style film-making?), the writing is bad - barely explains the virus, or the immune, and the CGI animals and vampire/zombie/monster things look ridiculously fake. I might have laughed a couple times to myself. Action scenes are choppy and predictable that you get no sense of fear or horror. He is of coursed saved in a outrageous manner by some random women who, mysteriously, happens to show up all the sudden at the perfect time to save Will. And don't forget she fought off ALL the "vampires," gets out of her truck and pulls Will Smith out of his SUV and drives away with no problems. Lets also not forget the grenade explosion near the end. Hahaha.

Overall, I recommend you skip this movie: save your money, time, and a crappy message about God.

The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford (2007,  R)
The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford
This is really a great movie, one of the best of the year. Not much of a typical western, its more like a psychological thriller with some moments of drama. A very interesting story about Jesse James, his last year alive, about Robert Ford, His obsession with Jesse James and his reasons to kill him. A very convincing and well developed plot. Beautiful photography, the landscapes shown in the movie are simply amazing. The music is also very good, every score fits to the perfection to the mood of every scene. The direction by Andrew Dominik is incredible, he delivers a slow rhythm yet enjoyable movie. It has a cast of wonderful actors beginning with Casey Affleck that is constantly evolving in his performances, Brad Pitt that is already a custom to watch him in perfect acting roles, Sam Rockwell excellent in his supporting role and Sam Sheppard with a brief but convincing appearance. To conclude, this is a great masterpiece, a must see movie and an Oscar nomination worthy.

Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2007,  R)
Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street
Here we have another dark Tim Burton film. After seeing several of his previous works, you can almost always expect violence and a grim tale. There is quite a bit of blood and gore in the film, so don't let the idea of a musical deter you. However, the acting and diologue are rock solid. The cast of this movie is magical. Of course Johnny, need I say more. Helena Carter, most famously known from Fight Club, also is an amazing supporting role. The story is a beautiful tale of revenge and love, which will keep you on the edge of your seat. If I would have to compare this film to previous Tim Burton films, I would say a mix of Edward Scissorhands and Sleepy Hollow. It has that dark and violent content, mixed with a strong central character. I am telling you people, you will enjoy this show.

El Orfanato (The Orphanage) (2007,  R)
El Orfanato (The Orphanage)
What do we forget as we grow older? What becomes of the people we leave in our past? Can we go home again?

What if you never grew up?

These are a few questions you may ask of yourself as you leave the theater after "The Orphanage." This film is equal parts dark-fantasy and ghost-story, a parable for the beloved kid's tale Peter Pan as well as a tale of spectral children. Very suspenseful, this film does a wonderful job luring you into genuine jump moments hook, line and sinker, and at the same time crafts a beautiful story.

Our characters are developed with care, whether living or dead. We are slowly brought into a world where we find conflicting emotions and motivations, as nothing happens without a reason or a message. These are ghosts that will scare you and keep you jumping, but they are real characters as opposed to the monsters waiting in the dark.

This film is an archetypal hero's journey, where our protagonist is drawn into a world of mystery at a careful pace, shuddering at times to leave us guessing, and rolling along at a terrifying clip at others. There is always a lot going on, leaving viewers to wonder who can see what, or more importantly, who can understand the dark world around them.

There is enough intrigue, suspense, terror, and real emotion in "The Orphanage" to leave it on a short list of damn near perfect movies. Here is a rare occasion where concept, story, and execution come together in resounding harmony to sing a haunting and heartfelt song.

Persepolis (2007,  PG-13)
Persepolis
Persepolis is a lovingly, hand drawn animated feature film from France, that tells the story of a young girl growing up in Iran, the daughter of left wing revolutionary parents, during the Islamic revolution. It spans something like 13 years in her life, from childhood, adolescence to early adulthood. It was taken from a graphic novel, published in France. Most of the prints in circulation are the French language version, but there is an English dubbed version (I thankfully saw the original French version, with English subtitles). What I really admired was the carefully nuanced use of color (most of the flashback sequences are in black & white). In an era that is now overblown with 3D computer generated animation, it's refreshing to see somebody kicking it old school style (hand drawn). This is a film that is worth seeking out.

[Rec] (2007,  R)
[Rec]
This is the kind of movie that you go to the cinema and watch, and then haunts you for weeks. Not that it will make you afraid of the dark or it will make you question your vision of life. This is the kind of movie that is all about the experience, the feeling, the atmosphere. This is the kind of movie you wish you hadn't seen because then you'd be able to experience it again for the first time.

It doesn't have amazing dialogues, it doesn't have a compelling story, but still is one of the best cinematic experiences I've had in my life. It's a short movie, short enough to have you interested all along, and everything is well packed, the pace being almost perfect. It goes from a quiet, even boring documentary from a cheap local TV to an atmosphere full of tension and expectation. Truly a unique experience. It has some flaws but the movie as a whole made me forgive them all.

Die Fälscher (The Counterfeiters) (The Counterfeiter) (2007,  R)
Die Fälscher (The Counterfeiters) (The Counterfeiter)
I came away with a moral dilemma of my own: though "The Counterfeiters" is excellent in places in others it is not.

The true story of Operation Bernhard and the printing of millions of pounds is a fascinating story. The direction, acting, and script are excellent. But my problem was one that for me was a real shock: I was not as moved by the film as I had hoped or wanted to be.

Dealing with the most singular piece of evil devised by man - genocide, especially in the concentration camps is never an easy subject, and perhaps the fact that it is not overplayed is a bonus - however, I came away admiring the film and its performances but left curiously unmoved by the overall tone of the piece.

Perhaps that's the point of the moral dichotomy (Make money, help the Nazis, don't make money, lose your lives but shorten the war) that is does not scream but rather affects us quietly.

Overall, definitely watchable. But misses greatness

Teeth
Wonder why almost everyone who writes a comment on this movie ticks the "spoiler" box? Because when you have said "the girl has teeth in his vagina, castrates every few boys that sleeps with here, which is good because every guy around her is a total ass", you said it all , honestly. In the first half of the film, nothing really happens and it's boring. Chastity groups satire? What, they still exist? Man, a satire of those is surely the most funny thing to be seen, no? Er... no.

In the second half, more "action" jumps in your face, but it is even more boring. If you happen to be unable to guess "twists" ten minutes in advance, it's because you've been falling asleep. Go ahead, go watch this movie and come back. Who deserved the most to be castrated? Did you see that coming half an hour before it happens? See what I mean.

Looks like Disney done it again; I am sure this movie will become an instant classic. I went in to the movie with pretty high expectations, and I must say I wasn't disappointed in the slightest. Amy Adams as Giselle was simply a joy to watch and James Marsden as Prince Edward was hilarious. Susan Sarandon as Queen Narissa was appropriately sinister and vile. Alan Menken's music was beautiful and, in a word, enchanting. Adams has a lovely singing voice, which I found a pleasant surprise. I especially enjoyed the tongue in cheek humor. Disney did a great job parodying their typical style, but at the same time, it was not overdone. Some of my favorite sequences were done as a parody. I found myself laughing (out loud) harder during this movie than any movie I have seen in a very long time. I especially enjoyed the over all clean-ness of the movie. There wasn't anything that I would be uncomfortable letting a young child see, which is a breath of fresh air in today's entertainment world. The story was engaging, the ending was happy but not over the top sappy, and the song and dance numbers were so much fun.
