Michael Clayton (2007, R)
this film is amazing. the first hour felt incoherent and without consequence, by the time i walked out of the theatre i was blown away by how brilliant the film is. there was a strong use of false foreshadowing that was not as much tricky as it was calculated. there were long and simple shots, like ones where clooney would be driving in his car for periods of time and you would expect something to happen because so much attention was payed to him driving, and then nothing happens at all, which felt strange in the beginning but added an intensity by the end because nothing ever happened to him until finally, one built up moment where you though it might just be another scene of him driving that ended in something big. the anticipation of events was perfectly executed. the diologue was powerful and the disposition of the characters was atypical. and amidst the brilliance the best part was the performances. clooney gives the best performance of his career as a tired and worn down but brilliant specialist, and he just looks exhausted through the whole film. wilkinson also gives his best and even swinton and pollack were very good. this film deserved its 7 oscar noms and it is clearly one of the best of the year. |

Once (2007, R)
after a second viewing of this film im still convinced that in 2007, a year that i find to be one of the best movie years of all time, once is my favorite film of the year. im still blown away with how much the director and lead actors did with so little, only $100,000. the music is mind blowing and the story simple and charming. the shots were amazing for the limited camera equipment and glen hansard set himself up for a great acting or musical career if he chooses to do more. wonderful fim. |

American Gangster (2007, R) |

Transformers (2007, PG-13)
rediculously, phenomonally, incredibally, wonderfully fantastic in every way. one of the best films i have ever seen in my life. michael bay is usually not very good, but he delivered. there were a few typical michael bay sequences that another director could have done better on, but overall the cgi, acting, and storyline were remarkeable. shia lebeouf was amazing and the casting was done very well. i couldnt think of a single poorly casted role in this film. i got goose bumps on 3 different scenes, especially when you hear optimus speak for the first time. the comedy was great, really funny and never corny, and the action was equally impressive. this is normally not the type of film i would hype up this much but its too good. it made me fall back into the love affair i had with the transformers when i was 5. |

Gone Baby Gone (2007, R)
this was a top notch film in every regard, practically perfect. i wanted to give it a full score but its just not quite there, although im hard pressed to find much wrong with it. the language is severe and hard to get through at times, but the acting was great, especially the performance by ed harris, the story is heart felt and thought provoking, and in the end this is one of those rare movies that really means something. it has a deeper point than most films. this film is cluttered with issues of ethics and morality and the end leaves you wondering on at least three occasions, i found myself thinking all three times, "what would i do if i were him?" the answer to those questions will perplex you, they are not easy to come by. |

Mongol (2008, R)
astounding. this film blew me away. the only thing keeping it from perfection is the slightly choppy telling of parts of the story, but there are so many things about this film to love. the cinematography is among the best i have ever seen, period. the locations are beautiful, building an awe within me surrounding the world we live in. the acting, considering no one has heard of these actors, was near perfect. the counterfieters was a great film, but this should have beat it last year for the oscar for best foreign language film. absolutely amazing. |

No Country for Old Men (2007, R)
this was an astounding film. it was dark but funny, disturbing but engaging. its not often that movies about hitmen and drug money become masterpieces, but this is one. the end was chaotic and then anticlimatic in a strange shift in momentum, but in all the movie was near perfect. tommy lee jones was really good even though his character was the least necessary to the plot. a great movie. |

Reign Over Me (2007, R)
spectacular. what a wonderfully delightful film. it was sad but fun at the same time. the sadness struck me on numerous occasions but there was so much in the film that led me to hope that i loved watching it. sandler got a lot of the attention for this film, and he was great, but don cheadle was the guy who performed remarkably in this film. im not normally a liv tyler fan but she was great in this film and it wasnt cluttered with too many distractions, the film stuck to the story perfectly. easily one of the best films of the year so far. |

P.S. I Love You (2007, PG-13)
this is a wonderful movie. in a generally weak genre, this is possibly the best romantic comedy ive seen in the last decade. heart warming and heart breaking at the same time, the story is rather epic. swank was adorable and butler was charming, and the script was passionate without beeing sappy. the irish landscapes were inspiring and this film made me wonder throughout how i might handle such a situation. clever and original, a must watch for anyone who is suspect of the romantic comedy genre. this is a film that might restore your faith. |

Sword of the Stranger (Sutorenjia: Mukô hadan) (2007, Unrated)
first of all, i have to say, that because this film only played in american theaters for one night, they charged me $15 to see this movie. so i needed it to deliver to say the least, and it did. |

Amazing Grace (2007, PG) |

Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer (2007, PG)
everything within me wants to give this movie a higher score, but something that happens at the very end of the movie just ruins much of what i was looking forward to the most about this flick. it was a great movie, an absolutely classic comic book flick. im a big fantastic four fan and a huge silver surfer fan and the surfer was incredible. they couldnt have done him better, he was the best part of the film by far. the story was great and they did a great job building anticipation with each event. but to me, there is no comic villian like galactus. he is one of my all time favorite comic characters, and they could have done a lot of things better with him. even if they werent going to completely show him, the way they "wrap up" his story was terrible. the thing that happens to him in the movie CANNOT happen to galactus. all i have to say is that in the next film, he better be back. |

3:10 to Yuma (2007, R)
this was a fantastic movie. im almost inclined to score it even higher because i loved it so much. all of the acting across the board was phenomenal and the movie was gripping from start to finish. this was one of those rare stories in hollywood recently where there was a really strong character in all regards that you could root for. christian bales character was a honest family man just trying to earn the respect of his family. russel crowe did a great job as the villian. this film moved quickly and was told well. great flock. |
|
| 14 |
The Bourne Ultimatum (2007, PG-13)
very good movie. i loved it more than the second and about as much as the first. this turned out to be a fantastic trilogy. bourne's story unfolded well and the action was mostly believable. they didnt screw up the story of any side characters and they told the story well enough to understand it the first time through despite the story being very complex. great film. |

There Will Be Blood (2007, R)
many critics and fans alike have loudly declared this to be the best film of 2007. it was truly a remarkeable film in all of the objective areas. day-lewis' performance deserves an oscar, far outdoing anyone else this year as he fell in and out between likeability and ruthless rage. he went from hero to villian more effectively than can be fathomed. the art direction, locations, direction, and musical score couldnt have been any better, and the cinematography was probably only exceeded this year by the assassination of jesse james. however, for a film to be a true masterpiece it must satisfy on the subjective end as well as the objective, and the subjective is where this film fell short. the story was truly profound especially when seen as a father and son story, and the themes of greed and the empty chase for vanity in this life where clear and powerful, but the story still never captured the allure of the great films of all time. the end was empty and the depression drawn on in many scenes was understood but hollow. a great film for sure, but this year has definitely produced a short stack of better films. |
|
| 16 |
Stardust (2007, PG-13)
it is a tragedy that this film is so underrated and so quickly forgotten. a truly great fairytale, this is a wonderful although bizarre story crafted by neil gaiman. the fantasy was alluring although it was strange to see the great robert deniro play a gay pirate, and the plot was weaved together well. i was transcended into their world for two hours and had more fun than i have with any movie in a while. forget the obsurdety of it all and embrace the silliness that plagued this film. |
|
| 17 |
I Am Legend (2007, PG-13)
i loved this movie. will smith did an excellent job and the film flowed well. no time was wasted on the meaningless, i felt that every scene was essential. to see smith create community with dummies and risk his life for his dog shows humanities need for relationship. this is defintely one of the better films of 2007. |
|
| 18 |
Zodiac (2007, R)
definitely one of the better films of 2007. i was suprised i liked this so much because i find fincher to be overrated as a director but this is his best film in my opinion. the casting was perfect and most of the actors put out the best performances of their careers. im really suprised this film isnt getting any awards buzz for the year, the story was well told and the details blended well. an excellent film. |
|

The Great Debaters (2007, PG-13)
an amazing film without question. let me start with my disclaimer, this film needed to be perfect just to get 4 stars from me because denzel admitted to knowingly and willfully changing major facts in this story for the purpose of manufacturing extra "inspiration". I am strongly against this practice in films based on true stories. if the story is worth telling, tell it the way it happened, if you need to change the story too much then its not worth telling. since he changed the story so much the film needed to be 5 star material just to get 4 stars, and it was. the acting on every front was absolutely phenomenal, the story despite the inaccuracies was beautiful, and the film was shot well and very engaging. one of the best films of 2007 despite its flaws. |

Atonement (2007, R)
a wonderful film, the cinematography and musical score being the strongest points. the performances were pretty good and the diologue solid, the only major downside was the persona's of the characters. ultimately there were very few likeable characters in the film leaving me disspassionate about their fate's, but the film was well done and worth the watch. the more i think about the film over time the more open i am to its value. |
|

The Bucket List (2007, PG-13) |
|
| 22 |
Lonely Hearts (2006, R)
this was a phenomenal film. total sleeper because i hadnt heard anything about it, i just rented it based on the cast, and it was better than expected. much better. one of the best films of this year so far, the entire cast really delivered. the film was written well and i loved gandolfini's narrative. salma heyak was top notch and the film was engaging but incredibly haunting and sad at the same time. worth a watch. |
|
| 23 |
Meet the Robinsons (2007, G)
disney pulls of another really good movie. they pretty much never flop. my 2 year old son watched this twice the morning we got it and the entire time he watched it i kept realizing how inviting it was to kids like him while having a complex story line for adults like me. great storyline and cool plot twists at the end. i liked this movie alot. |
|
| 24 |
Mr. Brooks (2007, R)
this is a tough film to review. the story was total genius, the acting was incredible, and william hurt playing the evil voice inside of mr brooks was brilliant. at the same time, they made a serial killer into a sypathetic character that you wanted to root for, which is a little damented, and the end was very incomplete. when i see a film i want the whole story and the end of this film left too much story untold. ultimately i think i struggled with this one because it was one of the more brilliant films i have ever seen, but it bothered me that i should want to hate mr brooks and the whole time i almost felt bad for the guy. the plot twists with the daughter were also genius. a film filled with difficult paradox which makes it tough to review, but in the end it was masterful. |
|
| 25 |
Beowulf (2007, PG-13)
i enjoyed this movie alot. i wouldnt want too many movies made in this way, but much of the animation was beautiful and the actors performing behind the animation were great. the story deviates from the original but in a good way, and the characters were complex with depth and realism. the only part of this film that i didnt care for was the design of the monster grendel. ive seen other versions of this story on film that had better designs, but this film explored the characters better than past versions. |
|
| 26 |
Eastern Promises (2007, R)
viggo mortensen was fantastic in this film. cronenbergs film making followed too similar of a pattern from his last film history of violence to the point where some things were practically mirrors of that film but the film was still well made. there was one trashy and pointless sex scene that took this film down a notch, but without that scenen this would have been a top notch film. it was still one of the best ive seen so far this year and the graphic nature of the film was haunting. if you liked history of violence you will like this because in too many ways they were the same film, but it was different enough to be extremely good. |
|
| 27 |
Rescue Dawn (2007, PG-13)
this is a really great film. it was incredibly slow from start to finish, but its the first film ive seen in a while that was better for being slow. if the pace of this film was sped up at all i think it would have missed something. the characters were represented well and steve zahn elevated himself to another caliber of acting in my mind with his performance. |
|
| 28 |
300 (2007, R)
a great film. not quite an epic, but fun to watch and directed very well. the cinematography was great and the music fit each scene perfectly. gerard butler was great, although his scottish accent was a little too noticeable at times since he was playing a greek. the history wasnt meant to be accurate obviously, but i still wish it was more accurate. most of the details were highly inaccurate in very blatant ways. i only with held a 5 star rating because the story was too simple with little character development, i could have done without the porn scenes, and some of the outlandish characters were a little silly. usually if i have this many criticisms of a movie it wouldnt get more than 3 stars, so the fact that im willing to still rate it so high should show how much i liked all of the other elements of this film that i havent criticised. worth watching for sure. |
|
| 29 |
Die Fälscher (The Counterfeiters) (The Counterfeiter) (2007, R)
holocaust films are always so interesting and powerful to me, while also being by far the most depressing to me as well. this is a great film and very deserving of its oscar for best foreign language film, but it is incredibly sad all the same. to see that real people suffered such a fate is always disturbing. wonderful film covering an angle of WW2 that many havent heard about. |
|
| 30 |
Ghosts of Cite Soleil (2006, Unrated)
haunting, stunning, and as real as it gets. i had a spiritual expirience watching this film that cannot be described with words, one of the most impactful films i have ever seen. this is the sort of film that reminds people that the world is a horrible place for many who live in it. a film about fear, suffering, anxiety, and death, this is 85 of the most impactful minutes a person can expirience watching a movie. this film left me heartbroken. |
|
| 31 |
The Kite Runner (2008, PG-13)
this is a great movie. the cast was chosen pretty well, and the locations chosen for shooting were excellent. the film did feel a bit rushed, this was one of those times where i would have supported this film going a full 3 hours in length because the story was so epic, but i understand why the film was limited. there were some changes from the novel that were better, and a few that were major downgrades to the story, but overall i loved the film. |
|
| 32 |
Confessions of a Superhero (2007, R)
this is an exceptional documentary. its astounding that one film can hit on so many themes so well without feeling confused or incoherent. the film details super hero fandom, the grind of the film industry, human pain and suffering, anger, dillusion, the nature of publicity, short sighted fame, and the search for the american dream. i was sad when the film ended because i realized that the people chronicled were searching for something that they believed would fill a hole in their hearts, and it seems they were looking in the wrong places. really a wonderful film. |
|
| 33 |
Talk to Me (2007, R)
this was a great movie. the story of petey green is portrayed with raw realism and the best part of this film was the performances of every member of the cast. an incredible ensemble led by don cheadle with easily one of the two or three best performances of 2007. im shocked cheadle isnt getting more hype for this role, he was masterful. good flick. |
|
| 34 |
The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford (2007, R)
this was a good flick to watch, but it had some problems. positively, brad pitts performance was top notch and the film was interesting. it had more of a documentary feel than a movie feel but it didnt detract too much. negitively this story was told very unclearly. much was barely eluded to with little or no explination, even things that seemed important. in nearly three hours you would think that they could have given a fuller picture of some things. in the end i would recommend this film, especially to anyone interested in jesse james, it wasnt as great as it could have been but it was very good. the cinematography may be the best of the year. |
|
| 35 |
Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium (2007, G)
i watched this film with my family for family movie night fully expecting not to like it, i was pleasantly suprised. its been widely panned, but this is one of those rare occasions that i just dont think critics are opening their minds enough to see the wonderment and creativity offered by a film like this. maybe if more critics watched this film in their living rooms with little kids they would get it. its a delightful film that actually works on many levels, where being silly for the sake of silly made sense rather than annoyed. im glad my kids made me watch it and i know i will revisit this film at some point. |
|
| 36 |
The Astronaut Farmer (2006, PG)
i loved this movie but i was fairly conflicted while watching it. in some regards the main character was a great family man concerned about his family above all else. in other regards he put his own dreams before the well being of his own family in a major way. ultimately it was a good family film and a delight to watch. you really root for the guy to get to space the whole time and they didnt try and tell too much story. they told what they needed to. i was suprised to see bruce willis in this film because they didnt promote him when the movie came out in theatres, he has a decently important role in this film even though it is a small one. |
|
| 37 |
Disturbia (2007, PG-13)
a really good movie. more proof that shia is one of the great young actors in hollywood. a lot like rear window, not quite as mysterious as rear window but more involved and complex. unlike rear window, i never had a doubt in this one that the guy next door was a killer, but the suspense was still done well. |
|
| 38 |
Hitman (2007, R)
this film was a huge and pleasant suprise to me. i watched it for the curiosity factor and expected little, and i got a really good movie out of it. there were certainly some very corny scenes and the film was basically a less quality rehash of the premise of the bourne series, but overall the story was intriguing, the action was well planned and executed, and the movie was just a lot of fun. i already liked olga kurylenko before this flick, but this only served to increase my awareness of her. this film doesnt touch excellence but it wasnt meant to, it delivered what it was attempting very well. great flick. |
|
| 39 |
Ghost Rider (2007, PG-13)
much better than I thought it would be. incredible special effects and nic cage was a better johnny blaze than I thought he would be. eva mendes is always a good thing as well. one of the aspects of the ending was very disapointing which came to a conclusion in the second to last scene, but this was a small thing. |
|
| 40 |
Breach (2007, PG-13)
really good flick. not as involved, dramatic, or clever as i expected it to be. you really never even expirienced anything of a spy story even though the flick was about catching a spy, it was more a film about relationships and the inner workings of the FBI. It was basically a spy movie that was not about spying. but it was interesting and well acted and worth a watch. |
|
| 41 |
Hot Fuzz (2007, R)
this movie was great. the first 90 minutes was beyond great and the last 30 minutes had some missteps that take it down a notch but it was still a fantastic film. i love british humor. there is a seriousness to the characters that is coupled with moments of senslesness that make it so funny. its one of the few comedies where you really root for a character while still laughing at him. good flick. |
|
| 42 |
Juno (2007, PG-13)
this film was delightful to watch. ellen page was solid and the story was original, and the ending was unexpected but strangely satisfying. i do think the film is getting overhyped considerably as was little miss sunshine last year. there is a trend of critics grabbing onto a cute and small film and giving it alot of play and these films are seldom worth it. this is a great film but much of the diologue was forced and less creative than i was led to believe and acting was just above average. this is a really good film, but not as great as many would say. |
|
| 43 |
National Treasure: Book of Secrets (2007, PG)
this was a fun and exciting movie, definitely a decent follow up to the original. i was bothered in this movie by the two glaring plot holes which made it a shadow of the first film, and i thought the way they used tension between many of the main characters as a plot device was weak, but the movie used interesting although questionable historical elements and fused humor well with the action. really good movie. |
|
| 44 |
Blades of Glory (2007, PG-13) |
|
| 45 |
Pirates of the Caribbean: At Worlds End (2007, PG-13)
this was a solid film and a great ending to the trilogy. i did think it was the weakest of the three films, but the first two were so good that being the weakest isnt a bad thing. the acting was great, the effects were well done, and most of the story was developed and told very well. some big things happen to the characters that might bother some people, but i was very satisfied with how the story came out. i did feel that some things that looked like they were significant were not explained well and the big stuff was rushed while less significant things dragged on a little. i also felt that some things had to be thought through too much to make sense because some of the diologue was too weak to clarify a few things. calypso's entire story line was also weak, probably the weakest storyline in the film. overall however it was a fun film and generally worth the wait, but in many regards it could have been much better had they focussed on some key things a little more and left other things out all together. |
|
| 46 |
Ratatouille (2007, G)
this was a great movie. delightful to watch and very creative. disney and pixar do a great job of coming up with original stories like this. it wasnt one of my favorite pixar films because i felt that at points it just wasnt interesting enough, but it was warm and fun. brad bird is a great animated director, probably the best there is currently in hollywood. |
|
| 47 |
Rendition (2007, R)
this movie was not well recieved by critics or fans, and im not sure why. i liked it a lot. the story was intriguing and powerful, the acting was solid as was the cinematography, and the film delivered true likeable characters as well as true villians. the hero of the film came from an unlikely character, and the ethical concerns involved were difficult to judge. the close of the film could have benefited from another 10 minutes of info, but overall this was a solid film. |
|
| 48 |
We Own the Night (2007, R)
this is a very good movie, and at the same time it is completely disappointing. Disappointing because for some reason i expected considerably more from this one, but still very good and worth watching. consistency was the issue here. in some scenes the actors were great, in others they completely missed the mark. in some scenes the cinematography was mind blowing, in others it was dull and lifeless. the plot was top notch, but the story telling was awful. this is one of those films that i enjoyed very much and would recommend to anyone, while at the same time feeling like there was a lot that should have been done better. this film is on the border between 3 and 3 1/2 stars. |
|
| 49 |
Sydney White (2007, PG-13) |
|
| 50 |
Ocean's Thirteen (2007, PG-13)
this was a really good flick. it wasnt as good as the first but it was definitely better than the second film in this series. the story moved along quickly, almost too quickly at times, and there were some sequences of the movie that were completely hilarious. there were some flaws however. there were a few things that didnt line up as well as they should have and a few things that worked well in the movie that would have never worked in real life. ultimately it was worth a watch and it restored my faith in this series. |
|
| 51 |
The Lookout (2007, R) |
|
| 52 |
TMNT: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2007, PG) |
|
| 53 |
The Reaping (2007, R)
this was a pretty good flick, better than i expected. swank carried the film to a point it never could have reached without her and the biblical themes and special effects of the plagues were great. some of the theological themes that the film delves into were missrepresented, which is usual for hollywood, but the film actually does a great job showing the God of the Bible to be one of power and wrath towards evil. the end had a cool twist as well. the biggest thing this film suffered from was its use of the cliche formula that many thriller/horror films contain, but i liked this movie alot. |
|
| 54 |
The Kingdom (2007, R)
this is a powerful and haunting film. it started a little slow but the final 30 minutes is heart pounding, and the message of the film was profound. character development is important in film and this movie had relatively none to the point that the characters barely mattered. it would have been good to care somewhat about the characters, but ultimately the point was about the state of affairs in the world. the final 30 seconds are heartbreaking. |
|
| 55 |
Alvin and the Chipmunks (2007, PG)
i have to admit, i really liked this flick. i grew up on these guys, and i really felt like the film was exactly what i expected. it had wholesome but fun humor, true characters, and was entertaining the whole way through. it sticks at 3 stars because its the type of film that falls into this score range even if done well, but that doesnt detract from the fact that i feel like this movie was done as well as anyone could have expected. it was great to watch with my kids. |
|
| 56 |
Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2007, R)
objectively i must recognize the quality of this film, it was well acted and shot, the comedy was well timed, and the story was well paced. however, i couldnt help but feel like too many pieces of the film fell flat. the music was unbalanced with the diologue and i didnt feel like i really knew sweeney enough to care about him one way or the other. the end was unsatisfying not because of the fate of the characters, but because of what the film doesnt say. good movie without doubt, but inconsequential. |
|
| 57 |
Into the Wild (2007, R)
this was a pretty good film, but not as good as many led me to believe. the story was profound at points and the acting was very good, but i still never felt like i got to know any of the characters very well despite the 2 1/2 length of the film. it did provide a great commentary on humanities inherit need for community, and i felt effectively trapped along with the main character as he slowly fell into death. overall worth the watch. |
|
| 58 |
Charlie Wilson's War (2007, R)
i thought that this was an above average movie, definitely worth watching, but the more ive thought about it the more ive realized it should have been better. hoffman's performance was one of the best of the year and it was cool to see hanks play a character like this, but there was some vulgarity i could have done without and i felt that the story was very incomplete. when i realized that the film was less than an hour and forty minutes i felt that it could have benefited from another 20 minutes so as to give us more background. a solid film but not as "must see" as i was expecting. |
|
| 59 |
Hot Rod (2007, PG-13)
this was a very funny movie. i thought that it was only half as funny as i was expecting, this was a classic case of all of the really funny moments showing up in the trailer and the rest of the film being average, but i laughed out loud enough to enjoy the film. the story was just as goofy as the stunts but they managed to make it heart felt. overall its just an above average comedy but its worth watching a second time. |
|
| 60 |
Shrek the Third (Shrek 3) (2007, PG)
this was a good movie. i thought that this was the funniest shrek, but it was still my least favorite. it had the best one liners and jokes of the series, but the story was average at best. it added to the series and was a delight to watch, but it didnt have the "journey" feel that the first two had. over all a good flick, good enough that i wouldnt mind seeing a fourth, as long as they are at least this good and they can keep the original cast then these movies are worth it. |
|
| 61 |
Wild Hogs (2007, PG-13) |
|
| 62 |
Even Money (2006, R)
really good flick. complete all star cast and everyone really delivered. it was cool to see peoples stories intertwined who really had nothing to do with each other and never met, even though they were connected in many ways. it makes you wonder how many people you are connected to that you dont even know exist. there werent alot of redeeming characteristics in some of the characters except maybe ray liota and nick cannons character, but i still felt for some of these characters. this film does a great job of showing the downfalls of money and greed. |
|
| 63 |
The Simpsons Movie (2007, PG-13) |

Next (2007, PG-13)
i liked this flick because it was fun to watch and interesting all the way through. there were some problems. the acting except for jessica biel was bad all the way through. moore is usually good and she was awful in this movie and nic cage is either incredible or caveman in movies and this was one of his caveman performances. the end of the movie was one of the worst endings i have ever seen in my life. the whole movie was great until the last two minutes when you find out that the movie you just invested your time on was only a hypathetical ending in the lives of the characters. the movie ends with zero closure. that pisses me off. it could have been very good if they had ended it better, but still fun. |

The Number 23 (2007, R)
the very last scene of this film is a verse from the book of Numbers in the Bible and that verse basically sums up this film perfectly. that verse actually clarified the film for me and made it better than had that detail been left out. ultimatley this film was extremely interesting and jim carrey was great. it also had some MAJOR problems. there were a few outstanding flaws with the film and one major inconsistency in the story. this was film was also based entirely on coincidence and that is rarely a good thing to me. the coincidences were too strong to be believable. with all of this films problems i still enjoyed it and would recomend it. |

No Reservations (2007, PG)
i enjoyed this movie much more than i anticipated i would. i was originally dissapointed that we were getting zeta-jones in a rare screen appearance as of late to such a bland film, but it was actually a worth while watch. there were some problems in the lack of detail and explination at many points, and the diologue was often very weak and unrealistic, but the film had a character of its own and a genuine charisma. good flick. |

Love in the Time of Cholera (2007, R)
this was a pretty good movie for the most part. the acting was lacking and technical elements of the film were average for the most part, but the story was interesting and it was developed and told very well. bardem was the only actor to shine, and the story following his character was intriguing and profound, speaking alot to the emptiness of the heart when we search for things of a superficial nature. overall it was a good watch. |

Sleuth (2007, R)
this is a film that cant be described, it has to be seen. michael caine's performance is great as usual. the cinematography is very unusual but i absolutely loved it, and the diologue was very clever, which it had to be because the film is driven by its diologue. the end of the film gets a little silly and uncomfortable, but it is really interesting. caine and jude law are the only characters in the film and the entire film takes place in a single house, but the film still carries well at most points. not great, but different enough that any film buff should take a chance on it. |

First Snow (2007, R)
this was an intense film. everytime i see piper perablo on screen i like her more, and guy pearce is going to be a great actor for a considerable period of time. this film was creative and different, but ultimately the story wasnt intriguing enough to make it worth while. i enjoyed it, but it was fairly bland and didnt offer much more than a little entertainment value. |

The Invincible Iron Man (2007, PG-13)
although im really into super heroes, iron man is not one of my favorites. having said that, i enjoyed this movie. another good animated flick from marvel that was definitely worth my time. the story was good, but the animation could have been better and the battle at the end was terrible. despite its problems, i was encouraged. |

Live Free or Die Hard (2007, PG-13)
this movie certainly had its moments, and it was entertaining, but it was by far the weakest of the franchise. willis did a great job of reprising his role, this was most evident in the scene where we catch him arguing with himself which is a john mcclane trademark. however much of the action was contrived and fantasaical, far too over the top to be enjoyable let alone believeable, and the badguy was weak. this should have been much better. |

Death Sentence (2007, R)
this is an average revenge thriller with an above average and touching story. it was great to see both john goodman and kelly preston in this flick, two of my favorites, and the determination and struggle showed by bacon was good. the film suffered from some very corny scenes featuring bacon preparing for his gang war and much of the acting and diologe was weak. the blood was gratuitous but appropriate and the film had a hardcore nature that was likeable. overall a decent flick. |

A Mighty Heart (2007, R)
this was a decent film. it definitely did a great job of showing modern pakistan and the turmoil cased by terrorism. the film was really slow and shifty and nothing was emphasized, in one way it was good because you felt like you were watching real life, in another way it made the story a little hard to follow. not great but worth watching. |
|
| 77 |
Enchanted (2007, PG)
this was a great idea that was probably executed as well as it could have been. the actors were actually supposed to ham it up and they did that well and there were some decently funny moments. utlimately however, there were countless flaws that were ignored as if the audience wouldnt notice, and the story was supposed to be about love and it had more to do with betrayal that the makers of the film didnt intend. in order to get what they want, the main characters have to stab others in the back, showing that the emotion of love in this story was more important than the loyalty of it. the end was alo weak. this is a decent film at best. |

Sunshine (2007, R)
this was a decent sci-fi/suspense film. good special effects and a few suprises that were satisfying, but ultimately it followed the usual formula of this sort of film for the most part and had a morbid reality in the way the end of the film was shot. not great but a solid watch and aside from the formula it was very different than many things ive seen before. |

Fred Claus (2007, PG)
this was a bad movie, lets just get that out of the way. i rate it this high however because there were two scenes, the superman scene and the brothers anonymous scene, that were amazing, and because the cast was phenomenal despite the silly script. elizabeth banks might be more beautiful in this film than in any ive seen, and the cameo's were excellent. there are a lot of downsides however. the whole "board" thing is stupid, who can shut down santa? and some of the conflicts created were contrived. the film did have an odd charm to it that made it fun. while not a new holiday classic, its watchable. |

Seraphim Falls (2007, R)
this film started extremely strong out of the gate and stayed that way until there were only 20 minutes left, and then the film fell apart a little bit. the acting and plot were solid and the story was strong for being overly simple, but the desert scene at the end was contrived and anticlimatic. decent western overall. |

Across the Universe (2007, PG-13)
this was an average film. parts of this film are astoundingly good, great acting and singing with compelling story lines. but the other half of this movie stretched to the other end with rediculously silly and over the top scenes with no rhyme or reason and false creativity. you could see the film makers trying to be creative, but they missed too often. in the end this was a watcheable film with great insight that should have been 30 minutes shorter if they would have taken out the nonsense. |

Doctor Strange (2007, PG-13)
this was the weakest of the marvel animated films so far, but it was still good enough to watch. the story was slow and the build up uninteresting, but it was cool to see dr strange come about. the time spent as sorcerer supreme was also limited and unsatisfying. this should have been much better but it was still good enough to leave me encouraged about the marvel animated films. |

Dan in Real Life (2007, PG-13)
this was a terribly uncomfortable movie to watch. it had a few hilarious moments that kept the score up, but it was essentially a story of a guy who got kicked around a lot and he didnt stand up for himself as much as he should have. the entire film i think i was supposed to laugh but i just felt awkward and angry. the movie also made the mistake of placing love as the pinnacle of humanity, despite the fact that love was the true enemy in this film of all that was good. had some laughs but i was disappointed. |

The Host (Gwoemul) (2007, R)
i heard amazing things about this movie from a number of sources only to be extremely dissapointed. the cgi work was incredible but the story lacked any depth and spent too much time on the virus and not enough on the monster hunt. it was entertaining which keeps its score from going lower, but the movie was unsatisfying and the end was terrible. |

Before the Devil Knows You're Dead (2007, R)
it pulls 2 stars because of the solid acting and great cast, but this was one of the most dissapointing films ive seen years. i had high hopes and much anticipation, but it was crap really. the story was completely morally and intellectually bankrupt and there wasnt a single likeable character in the entire film. the film felt sort of trashy and i couldnt wait for it to end when i was only about half way through. |

Lust, Caution (Se jie) (2007, R)
i was really disappointed with this film. the story was very intriguing, but it wasnt developed well at all. despite the film being over 2 1/2 hours, there wasnt any real development aside from the bare essentials that at least kept the audience in the loop. i also expected a little smut because of the title, but the soft core porn that popped up on screen was useless and lowers the already average feel of this film. |

Hairspray (2007, PG)
this picture had an incredible ensemble cast where all of the performances were top notch, especially amanda bynes who played an overly simple character but was completely adorable in every way and john travolta who was suprisingly convincing as a woman, but ultimately the film was a miss. a good musical paces its music and doesnt sacrifice the story for musical benefit, but this film over did the music to an annoying degree. the story was put on the back burner, i felt like i was watching a concert with slight diologue and only a few of the songs were any good. could have been much better. |

August Rush (2007, PG)
wow what a hard film to review. freddie highmore gave us further proof that he is a brilliant young actor with his great performance, and the idea behind the film was as wonderful of a plot as ive seen in some time. however, the actors other than highmore were awful, the execution of the wonderful plot was rediculous and over the top, the diologue between the characters was corny and outdated, and there was a series of things that happened that should have been dialed down a bit to enter into the the realm of realism. the end was also terrible, one of the worst endings in a film i have ever seen. overall a major dissapointment to a film with incredible promise. |

Paris Je T'aime (2007, R)
this is a difficult film to score as one. it is like four rooms but with many more scenes. a group of celebrated directors each made short 10 or so minute films about scenes from the city of paris starring some of the wonderful actors ofour time. there are some great suprises as to some of the actors. the problem is that the film is inconsistent, because its a series of short films each would need to be graded seperately. there were maybe 10 to 12 short films and i found 3 or 4 to be any good at all. my top 2 were actually powerful and thoughtful, and 1 or 2 others were worth while, but the rest of these short films were drag and pointless. one scene for example starring steve buscemi and directed by the cohen brothers should have been worth the price of admission, it was funny but pointless. in the end, watching the nonsense was not made up by the few good shorts, so i would not recommend this despite one of the best casts ever assembled. |

Shoot 'Em Up (2007, R)
artistic and well choreographed with a great cast, but ultimately this film was a complete waste of time. it was purposeful in what it tried to accomplish and the silly nature of the film was realized, but it was purposeless due to its over the top nature and pointless vulgarity. the film explained little and some of the things that were explained contained major flaws and holes. not worth seeing. |

I Know Who Killed Me (2007, R)
she knows who killed her, but does anybody care? i cant believe i had interest in this in the first place, but it was worse than advertised. if spiderman 3 hadnt flopped so horribly this would be the worst film of the year. multiple holes, terrible acting, symbolism that stood for nothing, really just sad and silly. it only doesnt go to a half a star because that is reserved for the worst of the worst, and this had an ever so slight entertainment factor, but it was utlimately trashy and pointless. |

Spider-Man 3 (2007, PG-13)
What the horrible movie is going on around here? Wow this movie sucked. Because of the build up and anticipation this could be the most disapointing movie of all time. most of the actors mailed it in, the story was awful, and this film had too many problems to count. First of all, gwen stacy was used as a mere accesory. in the comic books she is a major player, any random girl off the street could have served her purpose for this film without ruining a great character. sandman was a villian that you wanted to root for. you didnt want to see spidey whoop on him, you wanted them to be friends, that was stupid. sandman is supposed to be a BAD GUY! by the way, he flew, which was stupid, and he spent half of the movie as a giant voiceless monster rather than a great and fearful villian. The love story was terrible. i spent the entire film hating the way they wrote peters parts of the love story and i just wanted mary jane to die so she could get off the screen. Goblin 2 was also written poorly, they crammed an entire films worth of story into his character which in many ways was an afterthought. the second film really built the goblin 2 story and then they treated it terribly in this one, and whats the point of the whole memory loss thing, what a waste of time. The way they used goblin 2 in the end was also terrible. the butler was corny and stupid. but if all of this wasnt bad enough, venom was the worst part. they based his character on a series of off the wall coincidences, he was underused in every way imaginable, once topher grace got the suit he still played topher grace instead of a blood thirsty simbiote like venom is supposed to be. there was nothing vicious about venom at all. venom was also an afterthought, barely used for someone who is the perfect villian, the anti-spiderman himself. when peter had the simbiote suit that was also done poorly. instead of an agressive hero bordering on madness he turned into a mix between jim carrey from the mask and an evil version of john travolta from staying alive. he ruffled his hair and danced around like an idiot and this was him being evil. the black suit spiderman and venom needed their own film with a full story line. the biggest problem for this film was that it was way too busy. they crammed 4 very elaborate and complex story lines into one movie meaning that none of them was very focused on at all and none of them were written well. venom should have had his own film without a doubt. goblin 2 and the love story could have been fleshed out in another film on its own, and sandman could have been teamed up in another film with a less complex character who already has some development, like the lizard. they tried to make the team up at the end of this film work between the villians and it went as poorly as it could have. i know this would be expensive, but the real way to go would have been to leave some of these guys alive and have the last film be a sinister 6 team up against spidey. that film would rake in $600 million without a doubt. i tried to find one redeeming thing about this film that would keep me from giving it a half star, and i found one. although venom was written poorly, the cgi was done well. they made him look really cool. thats it, the only good thing in a terrible movie. |

Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story (2007, R)
it finally happened. a film was produced this year that could surpass spiderman 3 as the worst film of the year. the first 45 minutes were clever and hilarious causing me to laugh out loud numerous times. the final hour took a complete nose dive dropping this film into pointless and absurd satire that would appeal to only the most brainless movie goers. the film had great potential, john c rielly is normally very good and tim meadows was funny in this film, and the concept of creating a satire on the life of a rock star is a good one, but this film lost control of itself. very dissapointing. |
