Låt den Rätte Komma In (Let the Right One in) (2008,  R)
Låt den Rätte Komma In (Let the Right One in)
I'm completely blown away! I heard this movie was good, but not that GREAT. Beautifully shot, original style, great characters, beautiful story and the freaky parts were actually freaky! This movie revolutionized the genre, mostly on vampire movies. And it was not only about "vampires", that's what makes it so special, it was a school drama, a love story, a crime scene investigation, a police film, a horror film, a murder tale, just everything you could ever think about in one movie! Definitely this is the best movie of 2008.
2
WALL-E (2008,  G)
WALL-E
Best animated feature this year, and as on 2007, another Pixar movie is the one to get me on the first half of the year (Ratatouille last year). Very imaginative and a very poignat ecological message. Great animation and characters, I can't believe this is almost a silent movie in the XXI century! I loved that. Hundreds of movie references make this even better.

*I'm sorry... I had to buy it on DVD! I just had to!
3
The Wrestler (2008,  R)
The Wrestler
There are no words that can describe the genius of this movie.

But I will try to put some, this is simply the greatest conection I have felt to a movie character (maybe EVER). Mickey Rourke throws all his soul on screen and delievers the most believable and heartful performance of the past years. A movie that explores the "underground" entertainers and how people "use" them for divertion without even thinking inside that box, and how these people are actually human beings with issues and dreams.
Also a way in which Randy can not accept he has become old, he still plays with old video games, he still loves 80's music and likes to remember past days. Then we notice the gap between generations, when the kid talks about Call of Duty 4... or how about his daughter's favorite music? Vampire Weekend for example is very different from the 80's. Great way to portray this gap.

SPOILERS: And this movie may have the single most amazing "suicide" ending in the history of cinema.

Remarkable piece of art, for the future decades.

Gomorrah (Gomorra) (2008,  Unrated)
Gomorrah (Gomorra)
I don't know why so many people here didn't like it, it is a really good movie! Many stories about mob situations common in the Italian "Camorra" made in a kind of "documentary" style, with great characters that are developed throughout the whole movie, and with really good performances as well. Definitely one of 2008's finest works.
5
Milk (2008,  R)
Milk
First of all, I must say I'm a gay rights supporter. I think they had wait for too long to make this movie, maybe looking for the right moment? This movie shows Harvey Milk as the greatest gay icon - aside from Ellen DeGeneres haha - and corner milestone in the fight for their rights. This movie is almost flawless, it is visually amazing, original style and AMAZING cast, one of the best casts this year. The issue is there are so many characters that seem to be important for the story, but are not well developed. Sean Penn has a lock this year.
6
Vals Im Bashir (Waltz with Bashir) (2008,  R)
Vals Im Bashir (Waltz with Bashir)
Ok, now I am depressed... Still an artful masterpiece, with some kind of documentary style and great animation techniques that make it unique.
7
The Dark Knight (2008,  PG-13)
The Dark Knight
I was on my trip through Europe, but still had to find time to go and see this! And it was worth it. The best cast of the year, Bale made it once again, Ledger stole the whole show. What I really loved was the sound effects, mindblowing. This is the way an action film has to be made, great job Nolan!

----

It required a second viewing for me to realize what a masterpiece this is. You take a super-hero movie and mix it with great direction, great script, and Heath Ledger and you get a -Silence of the Lambs- thriller, in which the Joker steals the whole show and launches Ledger to immortality.
8
Sita Sings the Blues (2008,  Unrated)
Sita Sings the Blues
So this movie is one great example of genius and originality combined with a great story. Very interesting! A different perspective towards relationships and a very feminine issued story. Brilliant.
9
Man on Wire (2008,  PG-13)
Man on Wire
Spectacular.
10
Synecdoche, New York (2008,  R)
Synecdoche, New York
This movie could have only come from Kaufman's twisted mind. One of the best acting ensembles of the year. Will definitely rewatch this!
11
Revolutionary Road (2008,  R)
Revolutionary Road
This is the movie I've been expecting the most to watch since the time I found Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio are appearing both on screen since Titanic.
Sam Mendes confirms he is the master of family dramas once again, delievering a movie so loaded with emotions, a rollercoaster of feelings that keeps the movie going more interesting scene after scene. Fantastic performances from the whole cast, specially Winslet and DiCaprio obviously. I hope Kate will get the Oscar this year, and DiCaprio at least one more nomination.
The story is just a perfect portrayal of how what people say affect someone's life, for example everyone thought this family were "very special", so they did their best to keep this title to themselves.
I loved how at the end Mr. Howard Givings just showed the "secret" to live "happily ever after" for that long, hilarious. Sam Mendes improved his work with this fantastic masterpiece, I hope the Academy would see how special this little film is and make it big, not like the Golden Globes or SAG awards that gave it not the importance it deserves. Amazing film, I would recommend it to everyone who has feelings.
12
The Fall (2006,  R)
The Fall
Very simple, no computer generated effects, no super-stars on screen, but still magical and touching. An ode to stunt actors, who are mostly forgotten but they played a very important part in silent cinema, maybe that was the reason of making a simple film without special effects, to remind us of the true roots of cinema. Catinca Untaru makes an amazing performance as Alexandria, I heard she does not even speak English, but she managed to say things just by memorizing sounds, I think that is difficult and she made it quite good. A film to watch from 2008, definitely!
13
In Bruges (2008,  R)
In Bruges
It was actually really good. With amazing sights from Bruges, some quirky but enjoyable characters and a genius writing work. I was surprised to see Colin Farrell actually making a very good performance! Loved both Gleeson and Farrell characters.
14
Slumdog Millionaire (2008,  R)
Slumdog Millionaire
By far one of the best movies I have seen this year, a perfect blend between Bollywood and Hollywood in every sense. Danny Boyle makes an amazing job directing this movie, exploring camera angles, using to the maximum light and color, and filling with emotion and feeling every scene, so the audience would connect themselves with the film.
The perfect movie for M.I.A.'s song "Paper Planes", fantastic to have best movie with best song of 2008.
I can also remember a fantastic and magical moment, when Jammal kisses Latika's scar, like trying to drive away every bad experience and cure life scars with his love.
This movie is an instant classic and I hope it will get a bunch of awards this season!
15
The Reader (2008,  R)
The Reader
I wanted to hate this movie because it seems as being "the fashion" to hate this, but I must say it really is B-E-A-U-T-I-F-U-L! The whole mood, pace, visuals, everything makes this film very subtle and honest. And the characters are so well built that I didn't really know how to react, what to feel for them, hate her? love her? feel pitty for her? I had a conflict of emotions but that means this movie has layers, a very complex movie with a masterful performance by Winslet. A must see of 2008.
16
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (2008,  PG-13)
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
Yes it is good, but not great. Brad Pitt gives an unbelievably good performance, and Blanchett improves herself in this movie. The story was not that special and it felt a little rushed up to the end. Amazing make-up and effects and loved how they really looked younger or older, depending on the situation. That was great, really.
17
Frozen River (2008,  R)
Frozen River
Amazing piece of indie film-making, an exploration of the human soul and shows great realism in the situation. Melissa Leo is mesmerizing and delievers one of the top performances of the year. Great story! The very last minute left me like "Umm, ok..." and that's the reason I'm giving it an 8 instead of a 9.
18
Vicky Cristina Barcelona (2008,  PG-13)
Vicky Cristina Barcelona
Very good, Penelope Cruz is amazing I'm really happy she won this year. Artists life seems so complicated with this film but I don't really know anyone like Juan Antonio or Maria Elena.
19
Changeling (2008,  R)
Changeling
Angeline Jolie is spectacular in this film, the whole movie becames so sad beginning from the first 15 minutes that it makes it so painful to watch the whole film. But the charming music and Jolie's performance are undeniable good. Still it lacked some things and does not have like an "original feature", still I hope it will be nominated for best actress, best music, best costume, best art direction, and maybe best cinematography.
20
Kung Fu Panda (2008,  PG)
Kung Fu Panda
It actually surprised me! I was expecting a c$@ppy movie, mainly by the trailers (ironically) that made this movie seem as a non-sense stupid jokes flick. But it is something more. It's actually very entertaining, with amazing battle scenes, and original animation! A must see this year.
21
The Boy in the Striped Pajamas (The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas) (2008,  PG-13)
The Boy in the Striped Pajamas (The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas)
Good, but not great.
22
Doubt (2008,  PG-13)
23
Tropic Thunder (2008,  R)
Tropic Thunder
I laughed out loud, something I was not expecting at all... Some scenes were hilarious, the cast is great, Robert Downey Jr. steals the show.
24
Burn After Reading (2008,  R)
Burn After Reading
Hilarious mess of characters that connect each other throughout the movie. Brad Pitt makes one of the most annoying characters, performances are OK, John Malkovich steals the show. Fun movie to watch!
25
Mamma Mia! (2008,  PG-13)
Mamma Mia!
I'll definitely listen ABBA for the next days. Not the best, but the most entertaining and cute movie of the year. Has a natural sparkle that makes it a magical movie, that will transport you to the 70's when ABBA was leading the dancefloors.
PS: Meryl Street can definitely do ANYTHING she wants.
26
Horton Hears a Who! (2008,  G)
Horton Hears a Who!
Visually fantastic, funny and with a moral = perfect recipe for a Best animated feature nomination? Maybe... Finally a good film based on a Dr. Seuss's story! By the way, excellent sound effects! It really has something!
27
Rachel Getting Married (2008,  R)
Rachel Getting Married
yaaaaawn... I have to rewatch it I guess... Though performances were very good.
28
Defiance (2009,  R)
Defiance
I'm sorry, but Daniel Craig's eyebrows kept on distracting me. Still very original Holocaust film.
29
Blindness (2008,  R)
Blindness
Nothing special, they just transformed the book's actions into film, but they could have gone deeper.
30
Australia (2008,  PG-13)
Australia
A really forgettable movie, I hated the story (um, greatest cliché of the year?), but the images were just beautiful, the cinematography was outstanding, like magical, giving it the aspect of Oz. The music was also remarkable... The performances and the whole character development were atrocious, ugh we only had 2 beautiful people kissing for 3 hours and a boy singing for just everything.
It get me the feel that producers were thinking about some new ideas, but took American mid-west classics such as Giant and mixed it with Pearl Harbor, but hey! what a great idea, let's set it in Australia! Oh, and also let's name it like that, because it would be the only movie ever that takes place in that country! ...
I don't know, I think it only has a chance with cinematography, costumes and maybe music for the Oscars.
31
Bolt (2008,  PG)
Bolt
Disney played safe with this one, recycling old story lines such as the clichéd road adventure throughout USA, the same drama used in Toy Story of the superhero who can not tell what's reality and what's not, the quirky characters that go with him the whole journey and the "guy" saving the girl at the end. Still a fun movie to watch, the feel-good movie of 2008.
32
My Blueberry Nights (2007,  PG-13)
My Blueberry Nights
A little boring, but visually stunning film! Norah Jones was a complete mess, though I still like her singing :)... Rachel Weisz good as always... I don't know, it has something.
33
Iron Man (2008,  PG-13)
Iron Man
Entertaining, decent visual effects, but amazing sound! Though I don't really liked the "funny twists" in some scenes (if you watched it, you could understand me), I think the script was good, not a stupid non-sense parade as most superhero movies. You'll enjoy it...
34
Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008,  PG-13)
Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull
Welcome back Indiana Jones! Though this wasn't as good as ANY of the 80's movies, it still is one of the most entertaining. I liked the kind of feel Spielberg tried to make, like mixing this decade's feautres with the original ones, I kinda felt watching this in the 80's!
I loved the cinematography, I expected nothing less from master Janusz Kaminski. There were some breathtaking scenes. Some clichés, but hey, it's Indiana Jones! And you won't expect everything to seem real and natural.
Cate Blanchett makes a masterful performance, as always. Karen Allen makes a special appearance once again. 100% Indiana Jones!
35
The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian (2008,  PG)
The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian
I'm predicting: best special effects oscar 2009! Though it hasn't the "magic" that the first movie brought, and kinda transformed it into a "war movie", but the book is more like it... The creatures seem very real, specially Aslan. The close-up shots of the lion are majestic.
36
21 (2008,  PG-13)
21
Keeps you entertained... but I think I would never remember watching this movie in the future.
37
Forgetting Sarah Marshall (2008,  R)
Forgetting Sarah Marshall
Ummm no, i really did't like it... It wasn't that funny. But still, Mila Kunis looked like the sexiest woman alive :)
38
10,000 B.C. (2008,  PG-13)
10,000 B.C.
There it goes, worst movie I've seen in a while. 2008 started with the left foot. I just couldn't stop laughing (it wasn't even funny...) I would not recommend this film to ANYONE. At least sound was pretty good, but that's it. Don't watch it!
