The Searchers (1956, Unrated)
The greatest Ford/Wayne collaboration and, in my opinion, the Duke's best acting. As the racist, morally ambiguous Ethan Edwards, the Duke stands in for American imperialism, while Jeffrey Hunter as Marty Pawlie symbolizes the clear-cut, idealistic morality of the nation. Action, suspense and some bits of hilarious comedy (especially by Ken Curtis), as well as the beauty of Monument Valley, help make this western one of the world's finest films. |
