Movies that should have been awesome, but weren't.

These movies looked promising. Either they had incredible source material, or just plain looked sweet. However, the film itself just sucked. What a total waste of potential

Resident Evil 2.5 Stars
So much potential, ruined! Ruined!!! PAUL ANDERSON, WHAT WERE YOU THINKING!?
A Mary-Sue. Paul Anderson? Really???
I have played 6 Resident Evil games and read the novelization. I know my Resident Evil, and this was not it.

p.s. -if you don't know what a "mary sue" is, then look it up.

Resident Evil - Apocalypse 2.5 Stars
Except for the good killing scenes... Where did the original Resident Evil plot go? Why did Paul Anderson have to add a super-powerful character who wasn't in ANY of the games? Why add a Mary Sue, Paul Anderson? Why? - Not to mention ruining one of the most iconic RE monsters.
PAUL ANDERSON, WHAT WERE YOU THINKING!?!?

Daredevil (2003,  PG-13)
Daredevil 3.0 Stars
A disappointing Super-Hero movie. The comics are so much better. There were a few pretty cool fight scenes, and some good stuff with the "blind vision"... it wasn't enough to redeem the movie for me. It just didn't do Daredevil justice, and ruined Bullseye for me. Use the two hours you would spend ho-humming through most of this movie to read a Daredevil graphic novel.

The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (2003,  PG-13)
The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen 3.0 Stars
The comics are really quite good, and in the very least quite interesting. This movie was just.. ill conceived. And the ending was too weird and unexplained for the common person. Perhaps literary references are just too commonplace in movies, so it doesn't carry the same weight. Either way, this movie could've been much better.

X-Men: The Last Stand (2006,  PG-13)
X-Men: The Last Stand 3.5 Stars
How did this go wrong? ... well, there was the un-ceremonial death of Cyclops 15 minutes into the movie. Then killing off the best actor halfway through the movie, and just plain messy ending. I don't know what happened, but I was pretty disappointed after the awesomeness that was X2.

Hulk (2003,  PG-13)
Hulk 3.0 Stars
Well, I really like Eric Bana and Jennifer Connelly... This movie isn't horrible. It doesn't suck eggs. It really dove into the depths of the character, makes a lot of artistic decisions, and left the fighting out of it. The problem is that the audience wants to see Hulk smash. And we want to see him go up against more than the military, we want a rival Hulkish character to trade punches. (which was all remedied by the 2008 The Incredible Hulk)
This wasn't a horrible movie, it just made the same mistake Superman Returns later made. The American masses need lots of fighting and trading of punches to be entertained.

Highlander (1986,  R)
Highlander 3.0 Stars
A few minor changes could've made this into a timeless classic, rather than a dusty cult-classic.
The first half was pretty good / intriguing. I really liked the flashbacks to all the time periods, especially the Scottish Highlands. The fight between Sean Connery the bad guy in the tower was SWEET, easily the highlight of the film.
However, the second half focused too much on the present day and showing how "creepy" and 1980's the badguy was. Highlander's developing relationship with 20th century forensics specialist felt empty compared to his original Scottish wife.
In the end, some cool stuff, but strange story, and weird ending.
(this movie would've also been a lot cooler had they worked in William Wallace somehow.)

Superman IV - The Quest for Peace (1987,  PG)
Superman IV - The Quest for Peace 2.0 Stars
Horrible. You'd think that at some point the director would've said "hey, this movie really sucks, let's fix it."
Superman decides to *really* change the world for the better, starting by single-handedly disarming the world of Nuclear Weapons. The explosion of them going off in space is used by Lex Luthor to create "Nuclear Man." A super powerful foe, tougher than Superman in a toe-to-toe fight, and also recharges by sunlight. The fist-fight gets so epic that they duke it out on the moon.
-it sounds at least really epic and entertaining, right? Trust me, it's not. Where a comic could've used inner dialog and splash pages, this movie just sucked.

Hancock (2008,  PG-13)
Hancock 3.0 Stars
Not your typical superhero movie... and sadly not a good one either. I would have preferred this stuck to the "offbeat Superman" storyline. Great premise, perfect casting, poor direction.

Hancock decided to take a different route, one that was highly disappointing. You might even audibly groan as you start to realize what's going on and see Hancock's potential slipping through your fingers.

Analysis:
It took me about 20 minutes to really start enjoying this movie, because every singe scene had already been highlighted in the trailer. Every. single. scene. Once it got to fresh material the movie really took off and I enjoyed it immensely.
I adored the "Superman" parallel Hancock, that was fantastic. From Ray's pushing for "good job," to helping out the police, to the soundtrack (!), the Superman connections were hilarious and heartwarming.
Once that was over, the film took a dive into a confusing plot full of unanswered questions (or just gaping holes.) You might just find yourself thinking "didn't Highlander already try something like this???"
Yes. they did.

This is what I would've like to see happening:
Continue with the Superman parallels and pull up something similar to Superman II. Have Hancock be an alien from another planet, who has to discover his potential as crimefighter-whatever. Then once he's lulled into thinking his job is easy, three others like him show up and decide to take over Earth. Suddenly Hancock has to become the protector of Humanity against his own kind.
-sounds a lot better to me.

Underworld: Evolution (2006,  R)
Underworld: Evolution 3.0 Stars
This sequel lacks the simple beauty of the first film. I hate it when stories completely remove the spiritual aspect from Vampires. (namely crucifix, holy water, etc.) This film made that mistake in favour of "evolution"... and the basic result was a movie just like X-men 2. Except with vampires and werewolves instead of wolverine and phoenix.
On the other hand, the opening scene taking place in 1208 a.d. was pretty awesome. I found myself wishing the entire movie took place in medieval times.

Troy (2004,  R)
Troy 3.5 Stars
I was very disappointed. It has everything: sword-fighting, epic battles, epic setting, love and hatred... but it wasn't that good.
Eric Bana = awesome heroic leader who was the best character in the whole thing. He's the only reason I ever watch this movie.
Boromir needed a bigger part.
Achilles = huge jerk that annoyed me the whole time.
Legolas = huge pansy that annoyed me the whole time. I just wanted to slap him. AND KILL HIM OFF for goodness sake! That's what happens in the book! It's his fault this all started, at least make him suffer for what he did.

Atonement (2007,  R)
Atonement 3.5 Stars
ahh.... this is a sad movie. But not the sweeping epic it advertised as. No battles or sweeping epic scenes, just a glimpse here or there. Does a great job with the timeline and flashbacks. But the ending was *extremely* disappointing, I was like "wait, what!?" Like the first half was really good, but the second half didn't take us to new heights and depths. like I said, wish it would've followed the epic format. I realize that it had to follow the book... but I was still extremely disappointed.
Everybody says they feel bad for Briony. I felt bad for Cecilia, and especially Robbie! Ah! that was awful!
The biggest disappointment was that the point of "atonement" was never strongly addressed, more that sometimes there is no way to atone for what you have done.

Max Payne (2008,  PG-13)
Max Payne 2.5 Stars
I missed the first 10 minutes or so, so I might be a little off in my view here. But I was disappointed, even after hearing this was a disappointment. This movie needed a better hook to draw me in. I don't know the videogame well, except that I already knew what the Valkyries were. Perhaps that took too much of the mystery out of it for me. Also, some pacing issues. I felt the film really picked up about halfway through when Max confronts Jason in his office. Then it went solid for about 20 minutes until it ran into more pacing issues. The Valkyrie stuff looked really cool, but there was too much of it during towards the end. It slowed down the climax way too much. There should be a point where the plot exposition gets pretty much over with and Payne just starts blowing people away. It was there, but only at 50% of what it should've been. The overall *feel* of the film was really cool, but not enough to carry a story where you don't know how to relate to the characters. Seriously, how am I supposed to relate to a guy who refuses to relate to anyone? And just walks around looking pissed off? I mean, if we knew right off the bat WHY he was so pissed, that would work, but we spend a lot of time watching Max Payne walking out halfway through conversations. Not Wahlberg's best work.
Needed: a stronger emotional attachment to Max Payne.
Stronger sense of villains that need to be brought to justice.
Fighting in the first half of the film with a higher body count.

Okay, so maybe what I'm describing would be a complete and total ripoff of The Punisher. I think that's more what everyone wanted.

First off, the movie was retarded. The 15-20 minutes of action didn't even come close to covering for the lame story, terrible plot, inconsistency's, and god-awful acting. If you want to see Zombie fighting, go rent the videogame DEAD RISING.
....and could they possibly get any further away from the game plot?
A: World is entirely covered in Zombies. Never happened.
B: "Alice" is the most ridiculous and worst Mary-Sue ever created.
C: Jill Valentine disappeared, and was 'replaced' by Claire Redfield.
D: The character "Alice" develops psionic powers. (NEVER in a RE story)
E: An army of Alice clones? WHAT THE HECK!?

So disagree with you putting resident evil on the list, so what if its not like the game I don't think it was meant to be. No offense but if it was like the game you probabley wouldnt have been entertained you would have known what was going to happen and would have said it sucked because it was just like the game.

No... I don't think so. There's a difference between "altering" the story to make a better movie, and a Mary-Sue. A "Mary-Sue" is always a bad idea, because that means you're adding a character of your own creation to change the original story's direction. If the story needs that much fixing... then why are you making it into a movie? And if you're gonna change it as much as Paul Anderson did... NAME IT SOMETHING ELSE. Seriously, by the time Alice discovered her super-powers those movies didn't resemble the original story whatsoever.
