Amazing Grace (2007,  PG)
Amazing Grace
I watched this film, as I have been studying the Slave Trade at school and wanted to expand my knowledge. I found this film very interesting, it did not lose my attention at any point. Ioan Gruffudd gives a brilliant performance and is very convincing as William Wilberforce. Also giving good supporting roles are Michael Gambon, Albert Finney and Benedict Cumberbatch. Nicely directed with an excellent script, definately worth a view for history fans.

Brief Encounter (1945,  Unrated)
Brief Encounter
A wonderful British romance film of the 1940's. A timeless masterpiece with characters so real you sometimes forget they are acting. I'm not usually one for romance films but Brief Encounter is so incredibly poignant and well written. Celia Johnson and Trevor Howard are perfectly cast and give unforgettable performances. The train station and sound effects create a haunting atmosphere and have probably changed the way I look at train stations. It's a simple, honest story of love and longing, I could never tire of it.

The History Boys (2006,  R)

Monty Python's The Meaning of Life (1983,  R)

Monty Python's And Now for Something Completely Different (1972,  PG)

Bonnie and Clyde (1967,  R)
Bonnie and Clyde
'This here's Miss Bonnie Parker. I'm Clyde Barrow. We rob banks.' Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway are excellent in their title roles as well as Gene Hackman and Michael J. Pollard. This is an important piece of film-making of the 1960's and is most definately a landmark. A fast-paced, entertaining, quotable and violent film that makes you want the Barrow gang to succeed. The ending will leave you speechless. Highly recommended memorable classic.

The Long Good Friday (1982,  R)
12
Friends With Money (2006,  R)
13
Kramer vs. Kramer (1979,  PG)
14
Get Carter (1971,  R)
Get Carter
Great British gangster classic. Michael Caine just oozes coolness in his signature role. A gripping, tense films that's very quotable. I can't say it was better than my expectations because it wasn't unfortunately. Ultimately this is extremely gritty and powerful drama. I'd recommend it.

Signs (2002,  PG-13)
Signs
A suprising and suspenseful film. A thrilling watch that actually quite frightened me. M. Night Shyamalan has an expert ability to build tension, break and then rebuild it, so it's true to say that nobody else could have directed this film. I don't think this film deserves some of the bad reviews it received. The ending is a little disappointing and the film lacks sincerity, but it is entertaining nonetheless.

State of Grace (1990,  R)
State of Grace
Extremely overlooked film. A dark and clever gangster film with a terrific cast. A career best performance for Gary Oldman, probably second to Norman Stansfield in Leon, he gives a chilling performance as an Irish gangster. Not only does he play a psychopath-who-keeps-body-parts-in-his-freezer fantastically well but he also makes him likeable. Also in my opinion he made Sean Penn seem boring in this film.
It's tense, gritty and action-packed but unfortunately not without it's cliches, it also tends to lag with the scenes with Penn and Robin Wright.
Highly recommended, Gary Oldman's knockout performance is reason enough to see it.
27
Brighton Rock (1947,  Unrated)
Brighton Rock
Excellent British Gangster classic. Richard Attenborough gives a fantastically menacing performance as mob leader Pinkie Brown, Carol Marsh is also good as the very innocent and naive Rose. A dark, suspenseful gangster thriller with sharp and clever dialogue to top it all off. Brighton Rock is an underrated classic.
28
Man on Fire (2004,  R)
29
Atonement (2007,  R)
Atonement
Stunning, beautiful and poignant film. I am intent on reading the novel after viewing this excellent film.
James McAvoy and Keira Knightley were well cast as the pining lovers, although James McAvoy performed a little better and was oustanding to watch. Keira Knightley on the other hand wasn't as sensational as McAvoy but still pulls off a riveting performance. The young Saoirse Ronan was gave a great performance, she and Romola Garai show great potential for the future. Vanessa Redgrave is also worth a mention, she gave a very powerful performance of the ageing Briony.
A breathtakingly well-crafted film from Joe Wright, who I hope will bring us more remarkable films in the future.
With inspiring dialogue and a unique sound, Atonement deserves the praise it has been given and will hopefully scoop a few Awards. This is a modern masterpiece, just as captiviting as other romantic epics such as 'The English Patient', Atonement is definately a must-see.

Them (Ils) (2007,  R)
Them (Ils)
Suprising, thrilling, a tense French horror film. Them (Ils) is definately above a lot of the usual hollywood horror tripe that has been released in the past few years. But that still doesn't cover up the disappointment I felt after watching this. It begins quite predictably but then quickly delves into a fast-paced edge-of-seat thriller.
The jumpy parts of the film aren't very unique and are to be expected by the viewer, this triggered the fact that the films isn't as brilliant as I had heard it to be.
Them is well acted and provides nervy entertainment, definately better than most corny slasher films. The most disturbing thing about the film is the fact that it is based on true events that occured in 2002. It's worth a view but don't expect a revelation in the horror genre.
31
Mou gaan dou (Infernal Affairs) (2002,  R)
Mou gaan dou (Infernal Affairs)
Gripping, stylish and well-crafted cop thriller. A refreshing script which is tensely directed. It's highly entertaining to the point that my eyes were glued to the screen.
Both Andy Lau and Tony Leung give great performances but Tony Leung adds a slight more humanity to his role. Anthony Wong also worth mentioning was good support. I'm a little disappointed with the ending, I expected it to end with more of a bang.
However, this is a smart, exciting and compelling film, I implore you to watch it.
32
Office Space (1999,  R)
33
Starter for Ten (Starter for 10) (2006,  PG-13)
Starter for Ten (Starter for 10)
I had high expectations of this film because I had read the book and it was a very entertaining and funny read. Okay, it wasn't as good as the book but still watchable, the odd laugh here and there. A good performance from James McAvoy, I couldn't fault him. I'd never seen him in a comedic role and still he was very charming.
A fun feel-good film, not your average romantic comedy because it's more about his college life than his love life but both are combined, so it contains a unique type of humour. Plus it has a fantastic soundrack, I liked the constant use of The Cure. I recommend the book more than the film, a lot of good parts were unfortunately left out.

Annie Hall (1977,  PG)

Sixteen Candles (1984,  PG)

Amelie (Le Fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain) (2001,  R)
Amelie (Le Fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain)
A clever little gem of a film. Intelligent and articulate, poignant and profound. I liked it's close attention to details in every scene and the message it gives you about life.
Audrey Tautou was perfect for the role, a delight to watch, giving a sincere yet very funny performance.
Stunningly shot, with amazing costumes, colours and art direction. Amelie is charming, funny, moving and a beautiful experience. One of the best films I have ever seen.
40
K-19: The Widowmaker (2002,  PG-13)
41
On the Waterfront (1954,  Unrated)
On the Waterfront
Magnificent, powerful and gripping drama. Wonderful musical score and excellent use of black-and-white cinematography.
This has been sitting in my collection for a while now, and I've finally just got around to watching it, and I must say I definately regret the long wait.
Brando excels in his performance giving a truly moving portrayal of Terry Malloy, definately worth of his Oscar. Eva Marie Saint is also sensational but angelic in a supporting role. The chemistry between the two, sizzles.
Good story, powerful acting, superbly directed, although it needs to be watched with patience. Highly recommended.
42
Forrest Gump (1994,  PG-13)
43
La Vie en Rose (La Mome) (2007,  PG-13)
La Vie en Rose (La Mome)
Magnificent film. Marion Cotillard's acting alone makes it worth watching, but in whole the film is very well done. Cotillard's performance is one of the best I've seen from an actor or actress in a long time, she captures the lively and passionate girl at the beginning as well as the sad and broken Piaf at the end. The make-up transformation of different ages is very well done and believable.
The music is wonderful and not at all overused.
The ending was very depressing and overwhelmingly sad but the whole film was very entertaining nonetheless. Great film-making, I deeply recommend it.
44
Rosemary's Baby (1968,  R)
45
Stardust (2007,  PG-13)
Stardust
I did not expect so much from this film, because I usually don't go for the magical, wizard and witch type of films. But this was a pleasant surprise. It was charming, magical, amusing.
The casting was great, newcomer Charlie Cox proves he may have a big career ahead of him. Michelle Pfeiffer, was perfectly cast, I don't think anyone else could have played the part better than she did. Robert De Niro was fantastic but seemed like he was enjoying himself too much playing the part! Other good appearances from Peter O' Toole, Sienna Miller, Ricky Gervais, Mark Strong amongst a lot of others.
Yes, it can seem a bit corny and predictable at times, but it's a lot fun for all the ages.
46
Aliens (1986,  R)
47
The Graduate (1967,  PG)
The Graduate
Dustin Hoffman is really incredible in his breakthrough role , I can really understand why his career took off after this was released. This film is a benchmark in so many ways.
It's fantastically shot, so many memorable scenes, from the scuba diving scene to the ending scene on the bus. Anne Bancroft was perfect and was even better combined with Hoffman. Katharine Ross in a weaker supporting role but still pulls it off.
It's hard to ignore the comedic element as it will have you laughing out loud every so often.
Simon and Garfunkel soundtrack was wonderful, never has a song (The Sounds of Silence) matched the mood of a film as much.
This film is a timeless masterpiece that is still as funny and still as affecting to today's audience.
48
Election (1999,  R)
49
Funny Games (1998,  Unrated)
Funny Games
Unsettling, disturbing, gripping film. Haneke's masterful direction constructs an original, shocking and clever film. The film is very controversial, and I still can't understand why it is called a failure because it conveys violence in a whole new light.
The acting was flawless, Susanne Lothar's screams of terror were really human and made you forget you were watching a film. Arno Frisch and Frank Giering are terrific as sadistic psychopaths. The script is incredible. This film is not without it's dark humor, the way Paul addresses the audience on a few occassions was amusing yet terrifying.
Highly recommended film, but it is NOT for everyone.
50
The Last Samurai (2003,  R)
The Last Samurai
Wonderfully crafted film that has been sat on my DVD shelf for way too long before I finally got around to watching it.
Tom Cruise gives an astonishing performance as the drunken American army officer, it's a shame that Cruise is always ridiculed and criticized by the press when he manages to give great performances in most of the films he participates in. Ken Watanabe also gives a superb portrayal of Samurai Leader Katsumoto, worthy of his Oscar nomination. Billy Connolly and Timothy Spall provide excellent support.
Stunningly shot with spectacular action scenes, Edward Zwick proves his talent as a director and I am not suprised he went on with success with the wonderful Blood Diamond.
Highly recommended epic, why I wish I had got around to watching sooner.
51
Becoming Jane (2007,  PG)
52
Psycho (1960,  R)
Psycho
A perfectly suspenseful and enjoyable experience. Psycho is an astonishing masterpiece that set the standard in the horror/thriller genre. Anthony Perkins is really remarkable as Norman Bates, he is disturbed yet innocent, horrifying yet mesmerizing. I found myself spurring Norman on, to get away with it, he was that effective.
Hitchcock crafts a masterpiece which is still today a scary ride. This film probably wouldn't be as great as it is without the incredible score from Bernard Herrmann. I adore this film, definately a must-see.
53
Juno (2007,  PG-13)
54
A Room for Romeo Brass (2000,  R)
55
Prick Up Your Ears (1987,  R)
56
Fracture (2007,  R)
Fracture
Hopkins and Gosling saved the film from destroying itself and I'm sure if other actors had taken their roles, this film would not have been so great. The plot starts off intriguing but gets more complicated and I must admit that the story should have been told more clearly.
The script is excellent and Gosling and Hopkins work really well off each other. Rosamund Pike's character added nothing to the story and seemed unnecessary. The ending is a disappointing and could have been done much better. But if you want a film that keeps you guessing and has solid acting leads, I'd recommend Fracture.
57
High Fidelity (2000,  R)
58
The Reaping (2007,  R)
59
Control (2007,  R)
Control
Electrifying, heart-breaking, incredible. Control is a stunning and thought-provoking film that definately plays with your emotions. Joy Division changed the face of music in the 1970's and this is the story of extremely talented yet doomed lead singer Ian Curtis.
Newcomer Sam Riley is a revelation as Ian Curtis, he compels the viewers and takes them along for the journey with him. Samantha Morton is tremendous also, she encapsulates the role of Curtis' neglected wife and really gives a sincere performance. I also must mention Toby Kebbell who plays Joy Division's manager, he plays his part very well too. The film is shot entirely in black and white which gives the film a very haunting atmosphere, the director seems to be obviously passionate about this subject which adds greatly to the quality of the film. The soundtrack is used very wisely, creating some very electrifying and poignant scenes. I'd recommend this film to anybody regardless that they know much or like Joy Division's music at all. This film is a worthwhile watch that's intense, engaging yet beautifully depressing.
60
I Am Legend (2007,  PG-13)
I Am Legend
I am Legend succeeds in being a highly entertaining and thrilling film. Will Smith gives a very powerhouse performance, possibly second in my opinion to his really great turn in The Pursuit Of Happyness, the year before. The first half-hour is excellent, you don't really know what is going on but the film succeeds in keeping you on edge. My problems with the film was the large amount of plot holes and faux pas and of course the terribly clichéd ending. All of the films of this sort seem to end with 'If I sacrifice myself, I'll save the rest of the world'. Clearly I'm sick of seeing it, I think the ending was thoroughly disappointing.
But if you would like a film that is tense and entertaining, watch this!

Darkman (1990,  R)

The Number 23 (2007,  R)
63
Jindabyne (2006,  R)

Ne le Dis à Personne (Tell No One) (2006,  Unrated)
Ne le Dis à Personne (Tell No One)
A complex but clever, gripping and thrilling little French film which superseded my expectations. The plot was interesting but confusing in a good way, the characters were well developed and the acting brilliant, especially from François Cluzet, André Dussolier and Kristin Scott Thomas. Nice directing skills from Canet, beautiful cinematography, finished off with an excellent script. I definately recommend this if you like foreign cinema or decent thrillers.
65
Downfall (Der Untergang) (2004,  R)
Downfall (Der Untergang)
A compelling and powerful film, Der Untergang is a gripping depiction of one of the darkest and most brutal events in history. Set in Hitler's bunker in the last ten days of his life, this film makes you feel every inch of the atmosphere in the cramped and chilling bunker.
Bruno Ganz's performance of Hitler is nothing short of phenomenal, his portrayal of Hitler's insanity and desperation are extremely convincing. The rest of the cast give strong support.
This film is very draining because of it's lengthy running time, but it did not ever lose my interest or intrigue. Der Untergang is outstanding in many respects. I recommend this to anyone with an interest in war films or anyone with the patience to view it.
66
Rebel Without a Cause (1955,  PG-13)
67
Cool Hand Luke (1967,  Unrated)
68
30 Days of Night (2007,  R)
30 Days of Night
I'm not going to be too harsh on 30 Days of Night because I think it's a good film for it's genre but it's no Citizen Kane. The gore and action is average, nothing you haven't seen before. On the other hand, it's storyline and situation is something fresh and different in the horror genre, I don't think we've witnessed a film set in Alaska where the sun doesn't rise for 30 days consecutively and where rather conveniently they happen to be invaded by vampires.
There is a creepy element to this film, it won't have you screaming but the vampires are ghastly creatures that speak in their own sinister language.
The acting is decent, Josh Hartnett is okay as the hero of the film but it's Ben Foster who steals the show. He seems to nail the strange psycho character everytime. I'm sure this guy has a successful career ahead of him.
Watch 30 Days of Night if you're bored out of your skull and need a decent horror fix, otherwise it only succeeds as being entertaining.
69
Cidade de Deus, (City of God) (2003,  R)
Cidade de Deus, (City of God)
Magnificent, powerful and totally compelling.
I felt transported into the City of God whilst watching this film, the director really makes you feel every inch of the film and care for and despise some of the characters.
It's a solid yet exciting film with faultless performances. Leandro Firmino was especially excellent as Li'l Zé, I don't think I've ever hated a character as much.
This film is wonderfully crafted with beautiful cinematography that takes you on an exhilirating and brutal journey into the slums of Rio de Janeiro. Probably one of the best foreign films I have seen, it stays with you. See this movie.

Charlie Bartlett (2007,  R)
Charlie Bartlett
Entertaining, witty and superbly acted. I'm glad to say that this is not your typical, clichéd teen movie.
Anton Yelchin definitely has a bright future ahead of him, he was excellent, I can't believe it was the same guy who played the innocent and quiet little brother in Alpha Dog. His character is very likeable who happens to have a Ferris Bueller type of attitude. Robert Downey Jr. was brilliant and Hope Davis also provides good support.
Although the plot seems quite unrealistic at times, it manages to keep you entertained and ends with a good message.

La Science des Rêves (The Science of Sleep) (2006,  R)
La Science des Rêves (The Science of Sleep)
Wow. I really enjoyed this. This film has everything, it's magical, fun, inventive and wonderful. The Science of Sleep was written and directed by the same man who brought us Eternal Sunshine.. Just from hearing that my expectations were high and ultimately exceeded.
Gael García Bernal gives an engaging and energetic portrayal of a confused man lost between the dream world and reality. His presence is very charming and he also makes you laugh out loud at some of his characters wild antics.
I can understand why a lot of people didn't like it, yes it wasn't flawless and the plot seemed confusing.
But anyway this film is greatly directed, written, has wonderful visuals and incredible performances. Watch this if you have imagination, otherwise I wouldn't recommend.

Run Lola Run (Lola rennt) (1999,  R)
Run Lola Run (Lola rennt)
This is by far one of the most exciting, exhilirating, adrenalin-pumping films I have ever seen to date. For the entire short 77 minutes runtime, I could not take my eyes of the screen.
Run Lola Run is visually stunning, Tom Tykwer is definitely a film-maker to watch out for, this film sucks you in and never lets go. The film is very well written and extremely original and is topped off with brilliant lead performances from Franka Potente and Moritz Bleibtreu.
Run Lola Run is a fun, unique and memorable film which I demand you all to see.
94
The Darjeeling Limited (2007,  R)
The Darjeeling Limited
The Darjeeling Limited is a very funny, offbeat, poignant and visually stunning film from director Wes Anderson.
Owen Wilson, Adrien Brody and Jason Schwartzman play three brothers who haven't spoken to each other in a year, on a train in India in hope of finding spiritual enlightenment, the whole idea of it made me laugh even before the film started.
The acting was exceptional from all the leads, I was particularly impressed with Owen Wilson who in other films I have found very annoying, he was superb as the elder control-freak brother. All the characters feel very real and are very likeable. Not to mention a hilarious cameo by Bill Murray in the first 5 minutes of the film as a businessman racing Adrien Brody to the train.
This film is easy-going to watch and a refreshing change from a lot of other films, the colourful art-direction is simply beautiful also.
Wes Anderson crafts a brilliantly well-written and well-acted film with plenty of humor but it also has some very serious elements. A must-watch.
95
Dogville (2003,  R)
Dogville
Dogville is a highly original, disturbing but extremely slow-paced film from Lars Von Trier. I found it extremely difficult to get into at first, I felt like turning it off a couple of times, due to the movies lack of scenery and set, I kept thinking, where could this possibly go? It soon grabbed my attention after about 30 minutes.
Nicole Kidman was perfect for the role of Grace, she gave a mesmerizing performance. The rest of the cast do brilliant also and create some very intriguing characters. This film is fantastic drama which is very well written.
I must emphasize that this film is not for people with short attention spans but turns out to be a very rewarding watch nevertheless.

No Country for Old Men (2007,  R)
No Country for Old Men
The Coens deliver another spectacular and thrilling masterpiece which in my opinion is now more superior than any of their other work. They've crafted a wonderfully intense film filled with masterful chase scenes between Moss and Chigurh and topped off with a brilliantly dark screenplay.
Javier Bardem was hugely terrifying as the calm yet menacing killer Anton Chigurh, Bardem has excellently portrayed a character that should go down in movie villain history. I was on the edge of my seat everytime he appeared on screen with his odd weapons of choice and even scarier hair cut. The rest of the cast, Josh Brolin, Tommy Lee Jones and Woody Harrelson also gave faultless performances.
No Country deserved every Oscar it got and definitely one of the best films of 2007. I'd love to read the novel now.

Harold and Maude (1971,  PG)
Harold and Maude
Harold and Maude is a quirky, heart-warming and sentimental film worthy of it's status as a cult classic and is probably one of the most important films of all time.
Harold is a rich young man, unsatisfied by his life but engrossed with death. Maude is a lively, high-spirited 79-year old woman and when the two meet they form a close bond and embark upon some very humourous adventures.
Harold and Maude one of the most unusual love stories out there, filled with witty dialogue and memorable scenes that leaves the viewer captivated everytime they watch it.
Bud Cort portrays Harold extremely well, capturing every inch of his morbid nature and blank stares. Ruth Gordon is enjoyable to watch and plays the role beautifully. Plus the Cat Stevens soundtrack fits the film perfectly.
Harold and Maude is a wonderfully uplifting yet darkly poignant film. It holds a great message about living your life to the fullest and that love has no boundaries. This is a film you must see before you die.

Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (1958,  Unrated)
Cat on a Hot Tin Roof
Cat on a Hot Tin Roof is an exceptional film with emotionally intense performances from Paul Newman and Elizabeth Taylor, who's chemistry is electric.
Based on the Tennessee Williams play about a family gathering at the Pollitt household that creates a whirlwind of uncontrollable tensions and confrontations. A main theme of the film is the subject of mendacity which is powerfully illustrated.
This is one exciting film with intelligent dialogue and a dramatic atmosphere. Two reasons to watch this - tremendous acting and a brilliant script. Do not miss out on this.
110
A Streetcar Named Desire (1951,  PG)
A Streetcar Named Desire
A Streetcar Named Desire is a dramatic, fascinating and truly memorable cinematic experience. I could not take my eyes off the screen through out, I was completely engrossed by the sharp and edgy atmosphere and tense confrontations between the characters.

Elia Kazan did an excellent job of bringing to life Tennessee Williams's celebrated play.

Never before have I witnessed acting so good from all of the leads. Vivien Leigh shines as the disturbed and confused Blanche, drifting between fantasy and reality. Marlon Brando, wow. He gives an immaculate performance of the rude and brutal Stanley, definitely up with the best of his career, maybe even THE best. Karl Malden and Kim Hunter both give incredible supporting performances.

A Streetcar Named Desire is an emotive, intelligent, thought-provoking piece of film-making. A true example of a classic.
111
Million Dollar Baby (2004,  PG-13)
112
Death at a Funeral (2007,  R)
Death at a Funeral
A very funny and enjoyable British comedy. Okay it's not the best comedy out there nor the most intelligent but the insane humour and hilariously-unrealistic situations the characters get themselves into make it a very entertaining comedy.
There's a range of odd-ball character that prove to be very funny to watch. Alan Tudyk must have had a lot of fun playing his character (accidently getting high on drugs then having to control his outrageous outbursts at the funeral). Plus I found it really hard to believe that the guy is actually American, he's very convincing as an Englishmen. I also found Ewen Bremner really funny it's a long way away from the beloved Spud (Trainspotting) playing a complete nuisance but all he has to do is stand there and he's funny.
This is NOT a film you need to see before you die but if you have a free afternoon or it's a rainy day, check this out for a laugh.

Black Book (Zwartboek) (2007,  R)

All About Eve (1950,  Unrated)
All About Eve
Tremendous film-making. All about Eve is an all-round perfect film, terrific performances, magnificent script, brilliant direction and an air of timelessness about it.
This is the first time I have experienced a Bette Davis film and what a phenomenal actress, I couldn't imagine anyone else in the role of Margo Channing. Anne Baxter was also brilliant as the ambitious and scheming Eve, she really played her part well, making her character very detestable. Other supporting roles from George Sanders and Celeste Holm were also spectacular.
The script is very well written and the performances add to it's brilliance. The narration throughout added an engaging and intriguing element to it, it was much needed.
All About Eve is rich in all the elements needed to make a masterpiece. This is a classic not to be missed.

The Incredible Hulk (2008,  PG-13)
The Incredible Hulk
The Incredible Hulk is good but not incredible. It's a good effort in it's genre and when compared to Fantastic Four it's brilliant. Edward Norton was a perfect choice for the role, he really does become Bruce Banner. The action scenes are really good, extremely entertaining.
What I found wrong with this film is it seemed unavoidably dull. Usually in comic book adaptations there is a little bit of lightheartedness or wittiness, I didn't recall any in this. The screenplay was okay, but I can't recall much that was said only 'You wouldn't like me when Im angry'.
Liv Tyler wasn't anything more special than any other love interests in these types of movies, I even preferred Katie Holmes in Batman Begins, at least her tone of voice changes. If I had only seen her acting alone in this film, I would have deemed her a bad actress, Lord of The Rings saves her.
Tim Roth one of my favourite actors and a very good one too, seemed lost and miscast and in my opinion is too good to play a villain in a Hulk movie.
You should watch this if you are desperate for a fix of an action-packed blockbuster movie or if you want to get an insight into the story of the Hulk, like I did. Otherwise expect nothing more.

Lemming (2006,  Unrated)
Lemming
A gripping, underrated, French thriller.
I thoroughly enjoyed Lemming, it never lost my attention. The story is twisted and surreal, at times a little too weird but makes it more engaging. The cast is wonderful. Charlotte Gainsbourg is a very talented actress and deserves more recognition; all the other leads Charlotte Rampling, Laurent Lucas and André Dussollier are more than competent.
Nice usage of the Mamas and Papas, 'Dream a little dream of me' at the end, added a great effect to the film.
Lemming is an interesting, fresh and stylish film which definitely deserved more attention than it received.

There Will Be Blood (2007,  R)
There Will Be Blood
There are lots of things that make There Will Be Blood such a powerful and brilliant cinematic experience.

Firstly I must state the obvious Daniel Day-Lewis. He gives an unmissable performance as Daniel Plainview, slowly transforming into the most monstrous of human beings but keeping his humanity all the same. Incredible powerhouse acting that establishes him as one of the best actors walking the planet. Must mention Paul Dano also, why was he not nominated for an Oscar? I expect great things from him in the future.

The script is marvellous, filled with haunting scenes, memorable dialogue. It has a lot of themes, family, faith, greed, power and religion. The score is electrifying and never fails to be haunting.

Paul Thomas Anderson did a fantastic job. His work is new to me and I will now definitely seek out his other films.

The ending is perfect and one of the most powerful I've ever seen.

Films like this come along only once in a while, There Will Be Blood is a force to be reckoned with.

La Haine (Hate) (1996,  R)
La Haine (Hate)
La Haine is an edgy, well crafted and unforgettable film from Matthieu Kassovitz.
The film centers on an unlikely group of friends in the suburbs of France and their reactions to the violence that occurs around them.
Matthieu Kassovitz gives us a powerful film, rich in originality which is undoubtedly a triumph in film-making. Cleverly shot in black and white with swift and stunning camera work, which gives La Haine a raw and intense feel. The three main actors give superb performances, particularly Vincent Cassel proving his talent in an early role.
La Haine is a remarkable achievement that intrigues and entertains you right until it's shocking climax.

Stephen King's It (1990,  Unrated)
Stephen King's It
This started very promising and intriguing. Tim Curry as the clown was perfect, although he wasn't extremely petrifying, he's creepy enough to put you off clowns for sometime. The first scene where he appears down the drain is spooky and shocking enough to keep you watching. The child actors were all very convincing and in my opinion performed better than the adult actors in the second half of the film. It was more interesting watching their little gang take on Pennywise than the pathetic clichéd older gang.
As the film progresses you get more annoyed at hearing the rants and whimpers of the lead characters who all individually receive a visit from Pennywise.
Overall, it's okay, in no way brilliant. You laugh a lot more than you scream and the ending is extremely disappointing and ridiculous. Watch this, if only for the performance of Tim Curry as Pennywise the Clown.

Hostel: Part II (2007,  R)
Hostel: Part II
Awful, predictable and disgusting. Hostel was bearable but this really over stepped the mark. Who would pay money to watch this? Only a sadist.
This was almost exactly the same as the first one. Silly and ignorant travellers stupidly get lured into going to Slovakia and check in at THE hostel. Where ultimately they get sliced up and tortured. No wait... there IS one character with a brain cell who saves herself from getting chainsawed or whatever and ultimately turns into Buffy the Vampire slayer, weilding axes and killing those who tricked her into it.
Weak acting (They killed off the only okay actor after 4 minutes), poor plot and bad direction. Avoid at all costs.

Matchstick Men (2003,  PG-13)
Matchstick Men
Matchstick Men is an impressive and entertaining film. This doesn't seem like the type of film Ridley Scott usually makes, but with his name attatched as director, my expectations were high.
Nicolas Cage performs very well as the obsessive compulsive con artist, I thought as an actor he seems to be getting worse and just taking the easy blockbuster work, but this is one of those gems that prove his talent has not been lost. Sam Rockwell is brilliant as Cage's protege-partner, he makes sure Cage doesn't scene steal when he's around. Newcomer Alison Lohman also pulls off a convincing performance as Cage's daughter.
Matchstick Men is an underrated film that equally balances comedy with drama and climaxes with a superb and clever twist. Highly recommended.

Silk (2007,  R)
Silk
Silk suffers from the dull factor and there is nothing I hate more than having to sit through a very dull film.
The beautiful scenery and stunning cinematography is one of very few things I liked about this film. Michael Pitt is a promising actor, I've liked some of his previous work but in this he is incredibly monotonous and emotionless. Keira Knightley could have made more of an impression had the role demanded more of her, and Alfred Molina, a very good actor is a much needed addition to the cast. The scenes journeying between France and Japan, are silent, dreary and too long.
If you actually cared about the characters then maybe this would have been moving, but in my opinion it was a poor attempt at an epic love story. Avoid and watch Atonement instead.
164
Vacancy (2007,  R)
Vacancy
Vacancy is a decent thriller that surprisingly keeps you on the edge of your seat. The tension is built up quite well and it is good to see a horror film not completely relying on blood and gore to entice the viewers. Luke Wilson and Kate Beckinsale are fairly convincing as the bickering couple who unluckily end up in a creepy motel. It's shocking how well Kate Beckinsale can play an American.
Unfortunately in the last twenty minutes of the film, it becomes a lot more cliched and finishes with a predictable ending that only makes you roll your eyes and think 'how convenient'. Don't go out of your way to see it, but don't decline if you come across it.

Die Fälscher (The Counterfeiters) (The Counterfeiter) (2007,  R)
Die Fälscher (The Counterfeiters) (The Counterfeiter)
Tremendous film-making. Die Falscher is an extremely intense film, and no doubt an achievement in cinema. It covers a different angle to your usual holocaust film, and tells a remarkable story that had yet to be told.
Die Falscher follows the lives of prisoners in a concentration camp forced with the task of counterfeiting for the Nazis.
Karl Markovics plays a great leading man and very believable as the 'King of Counterfeiters'. August Diehl is also brilliant as the rebellious hero Adolf Burger.
The script, direction and atmosphere of the film can not be criticised. Die Falscher is a raw, engaging and inspiring piece of cinema that ultimately must not be missed.

Shrek the Third (Shrek 3) (2007,  PG)
Shrek the Third (Shrek 3)
As I have said before the original Shrek should have been left alone, but it seems as though they have to milk everything now, a Shrek the Third was inevitable. This film to put it lightly was a waste of space. I shouldn't really be too harsh because the second and third only seem to appeal to kiddies. Although I don't see how a child could find that much humour in this other than the repetitive belching and vomiting of the mini Shreks.
This really is one too many, the story is silly, new characters are unlikeable and the dialogue seems forced.
I think it is fair to say that Shrek is now past his sell by date. No more sequels!

Edward Scissorhands
One of Tim Burton's best films. I did not expect so much from Edward Scissorhands, somehow it's quirky and unusual tale of an inventors unfinished creation left behind, manages to pull on your heartstrings. I was surprised how emotionally touching the film is, it's after effect haunts you for days to come.
Tim Burton has always been responsible for producing unconventional and extremely entertaining films and Edward Scissorhands is by far his masterpiece in my opinion.
A huge applause for Johnny Depp as without him in the title role, who knows what other portrayal would have been conceived. He's brilliant, he conveys all the innocence, harmlessness and curiosity of his character. His performance was Oscar-worthy.
The balance of drama, dark humour and romance was perfect. The story is told beautifully.
To conclude, this is in my opinion the best Burton film I have seen, it's magical, poetic, funny and moving.
