Gran Torino (2009,  R)
Gran Torino
The real tease of Gran Torino is what it reveals about Eastwood himself. The entire film is painstakingly set up as the spiritual redemption of a man who has seen too much death to believe in the sanctity (and exotic harmony) of life...I understand the slur's but I'm not sure the final message wasn't that violence is the only way to solve violence...

Ghosts of Mississippi (1997,  R)

Crash (2004,  R)
Crash

"Crash" shuns political correctness with an enthusiasm rarely observed in modern cinema: its characters say exactly what they think and feel providing for an uncomfortable but uniquely edgy experience. What Haggis seems to be saying is that we're all prejudiced in some way or another no matter how broadminded we like to think we are and his film takes a look at the aftereffects of that ignorance, of all that bottled-up resentment and intolerance. Bullock's character Jean sums the incendiary situation up best when she says she wakes up angry every morning and doesn't know why. It's because L.A.'s racial boundaries are so clinically defined, so stringent that the city's rich melting pot of inhabitants rarely comes into physical contact with one another on its bustling, dangerous streets.

Bottom line, Crash is a masterpiece, thought provoking film that encourages dialogue on racism and ignorance. Given the tumultuous state of our current society this is indeed a positive thing.

I finally had the distinct pleasure of viewing said film and found it quite entertaining. Certainly, like so many works of art, in hindsight there are areas in which it could be improved. However, this film does what so many others produced today does not do; it actually appeals to something within the viewer that allows the onlooker to become emotionally involved with the characters to the point of endeavoring to fill their shoes as the movie is in progress. Movie is certainly cliche at times but the writing and dialogue compensate for this. The use of subtlety in defining the relationship between Mr. Connery and Mr. Brown; as well as the awkwardly posed relationship between he and Ms. Paquin speaks volumes excellent writing and editing. I would recommend that you sit and view this movie with your eyes wide-open and your ego surpressed, you too will be able to appreciate this film for what its true value. Remeber, the best critic is normally one who has endeavored to succeeded at accomplish that which he or she is critiquing.

The Color Purple (1985,  PG-13)
The Color Purple
Over more than twenty years later The Color Purple is still worth the time and tears to watch. It includes many powerful themes including incest, physical abuse, family, lesbianism and of course discrimination (skin color, women, sexual preference, societal). Whether you read the book or not, this film is a must see for its emotional content, character interaction and literary relevance.

Hotel Rwanda (2004,  PG-13)
Hotel Rwanda
Terry George has done a remarkable job in conveying a very personal story while also establishing the broader political picture. It's a scathing indictment on the West's unforgivable reluctance to firstly even acknowledge the atrocities, then secondly prevent them. The voice of a US State Department spokeswoman evasively avoiding calling it genocide is as ironical as it is disturbing. The film admirably avoids exploiting the brutality of the conflict, though it's still hard to conceive of how it only warrants the kid-friendly PG-13 rating in the US. Instead it focuses more on the psychological impact of the conflagration, the arbitrariness of death and the devastating effects of fear.

It is to Cheadle's credit that such an established actor can divorce himself from recognition and simply become the personification of Paul Rusesabagina. His accent and performance are unimpeachable and worthy of all the plaudits including a much deserved Oscar nomination.

Hi, I was going to create a list about that, basing in your poll, but I have seen you have done it before. However, I would like to propose you a few movies I think you have forgotten: To kill a mockingbird; Mississippi Burning; In the Heat of night; Guess who´s coming dinner; The Chamber; Hotel Rwanda; Days of glory (Indigenes); Mandela and LeKlerk; True Crime. Then it will be an almost perfect list! See you.

I agree with you...District 9 should be on the list...After reading several reviews, I found out that it brings a fresh look at how respect should exist between us, no matter the race, social status or anything else...
