The Last Waltz
23 years ago today the band played their final concert at winterland in san francisco, which became the basis for this 2 hour film directed by martin scorsese. here's a link to stream the entire 4 hour concert for those who are interested. not sure this will work in all areas or for how long but it's free

Joe Strummer: The Future Is Unwritten
he tried to change the world and not become a commodity. a great time for fans of the only band that mattered. i just don't understand why there's a pirate in it

The Kids Are Alright (2003,  Unrated)
The Kids Are Alright
a great overview of the early career of one of the greatest rock bands ever. fun interview segments. that townshend sure is a moody guy but genius has it's privileges i suppose...

Let It Be (2001,  Unrated)
Let It Be
i'm not sure i can objectively rate this but it was a joy to watch. it's alot of raw footage interspersed with amazing performances from the legends of my childhood. seeing them jam in the studio on shake rattle and roll and lawdy miss clawdy and witnessing the creation of the songs that became their last album was an emotional experience for me. it all culminates in 20 mins of the famous rooftop concert, seriously disrupting business in the street below, as some complained! i thought the touching relationship between john and paul was still quite evident here despite attempts to demonize yoko ono. this film was not easy to come by but if u get the opportunity, check it out. it's an awesome piece of rock n roll history

Buena Vista Social Club
a lovely film which documents some giants of latin jazz who might have remained relatively unknown outside their home country of cuba. many of them have passed on now but will live on thanks to wim wenders and ry cooder, who was fined by u.s. government for his work on this project!

Pink Floyd: Live at Pompeii (Echoes: Pink Floyd)
really well done. floyd's spacey techno rock blends well with the eerie lavabeds and ghostly frescoes in the ruins of pompeii. there's definitely a timeless quality exhibited well here. the director's cut includes studio footage of sessions for dark side of the moon too. having seen waters' live show recently, that was fun, and judging by the crowd at that show the floyd seems to have more fans than ever!

Scott Walker: 30 Century Man (2006,  Unrated)
Scott Walker: 30 Century Man
a fascinating look at the reclusive musician, who rose from boy band pop icon of the 60's to a truly avant garde artist. not as well known as he should be, especially in his native america (not that he cares), his influence can be heard from bowie to the the smiths to radiohead and beyond. his dramatic baritone voice, painting extraordinary images with abstract poetry, sounds like nobody else. i hadn't heard of him til fairly recently, my bad, but i certainly admire his courageous creative spirit and loyalty to his unique muse. and i'm acquiring a taste for his music too. he's still recording, every 10 years or so, most recently the drift in 2006.

Jimi Hendrix
a good early doc made shortly after his death. interviews with his dad, old gfs, army buddies and friends as well as clapton, townshend, lou reed and mick jagger. alot of great concert footage, most of which as been seen elsewhere

Pete Seeger: The Power of Song (2007,  PG)

The Decline of Western Civilization (1981,  Unrated)
The Decline of Western Civilization
a view from the pit at the height of the l.a. hardcore scene, circa 1980. blistering performances by black flag and x among others. film quality isn't great as this hasn't had a dvd release but it's well worth watching for those interested in a bunch of bored middle class kids bent on self destruction. i enjoyed it!
51
CS Blues (Cocksucker Blues) (1972,  R)
CS Blues (Cocksucker Blues)
the most famous underground film of the rock era, it's available in bootleg form of varying quality and on youtube. it's messy and depressing. the limited concert footage is worthwhile; the rest is a portrait of unglamorous life on the road. all the usual rock star cliches abound and were perhaps first seen here, including rampant drug use, groupie orgies and tossing tvs from windows. it's pretty graphic. the boys already seem bored and it's hard to imagine how they've kept it up for almost 40 more years. of interest mainly to fans who want to see mick stroking himself, keith nodding out and various hangers-on behaving badly.

Ladies and Gentlemen: The Rolling Stones (1973,  Unrated)
Ladies and Gentlemen: The Rolling Stones
great concert film from the stones' legendary american tour 1972 in support of exile on main street. this is the best footage i've seen of the stones in their prime. filmed over four nights in fort worth and houston, it was released with quadrophonic sound for limited theater engagements but has never had a home video release. the vid is a bit rough on bootleg but it's well worth seeking out for stones fans. see why they were called the greatest rock n roll band in the world in this period
