Four Weddings and a Funeral (1994,  R)
Four Weddings and a Funeral
One of my very true favorite movies! It might be sappy except maybe you too have realized (almost too late) who your true love was???

Lost In Translation (2003,  R)
Lost In Translation
(Sept. 2003 Director: Sofia Coppola) I LOVED Scarlet Johansen & Bill Murray together!! Dead pan? Have you never spent a week across the country in the madness of a convention? or or been to Toyko? [ I have not..but know those who have) Both Scarlett & Bill are stuck for about 1 week in Toyko, Japan..Bill to make a Japanese Whiskey commercial...Scartlett travelling with her photographer new husband who is rarely available encounters Bill Murray and quickly develops a friendship. There is a kinship between these 2 due to perhaps being displaced in Japan?

Whatever the reason the chemistry is warm and friendly. Despite their age difference, these 2 have quite a bit in common. (to be continued

ALSO MUST SEE THE LOST CITY to truly appreciate the talents of (Bill Murray) this now classic funny man (former Saturday Night Live regular!!)...and of course Andy Garcia

Sideways (2004,  R)
Sideways
(Ootober 2004)Director Alexander Payne makes a remarkable film here!! Best friends (Paul Giamatti & Thomas Hayden Church) adventure "road trip" film ever!! Romantic...two buddies tour winery side Southern California as a Bachelor's Party...and experience quite the side splitting adventures!! Touching, gentle, romantic, raw!! LOVED IT!! These 2 guys could NOT be more opposities! LOL

Sandra Oh (Grey's Anatomy) co-stars as a love interest of Jack's whom he keeps in the dark as to his upcoming marriage.

IF YOU LOVED THIS ONE, THEN SEE APRES VOUS!! Frank Jr's review (in French)
Ahhh, jouissance. [translation: " That's true that it is good really. Except that this risks ceasing being good in some instants. " It is of what I thought... Throughout the film, until the very last minute. Sideways succeeds in recreating the nice ambience of a trip where two friends take attack the road of grape harvests of California. Unconvincing and touching interpretation of Paul Giamatti playing in a very good film but which, in my view, contrary to what others could think of, does not transport a rather powerful message to be part of my favourite films. A thing is sure, it is that the first thing that I made having listened to Sideways... It is to open me a good bottle of red wine. Ahhh, pleasure....

Children of Men (2006,  R)
Children of Men
(Dec. 2006 Director: Alfonso Cuaron)Based on the book by P.D. James. The film won Best Cinematography at the 2007 BAFTA Awards.. To me had a style reminiscent of 70's films....Mad Maxx, Soylent Green...and in that vein perhaps more art than sustenance, Loved the retrogade view of the world coming undone! Complex subjects--a future where no one can conceive and plagues occur often. Clive Owen stars as Julianne Moore's ex-husband who becomes enlisted into the cause of preserving the life of one young female who has miraculously conceived--and to transport here and her offspring to a safe haven (a ship)!

Set in 2027 where the future looks bleak. Violence is everywhere in the streets, poverty and chaos is apparent.

Casino Royale (2006,  PG-13)
Casino Royale
(Nov. 2006 Director: Martin Campbell) In a word "ACTION" Set in first Uganda..where this new James Bond catches the scent of a major operative... which leads him to Miami, FL & the unveiling of a new super jet (which it seems is a target of terrorists)..Bond goes off the radar (much to M's chagrin) Wonderfully edited by Stuart Baird, the film showcases the new Daniel Crag as almost a cross between Robert Conrad (Wild Wild West) Russian Uri (Secret Agent Man) & Robert Patrick (Terminator II the liquid terminator)..except Craig is steely eyed....Craig (as Bond) runs without tiring...his first chases he is following an Afrikan who flees Bond litterally bouncing from building to building as if he were Spiderman..or as if he had Flubber shoes!!

My favorite line from this movie, "In the old days if an agent did something so stupid, he would have the decency to defect! Christ, I do miss the Cold War!" by M. So far looks terrific! Great face this guy! (Daniel Craig) Simply timneless performances by M (aka Judy Dench) whom I love everything she does! "Je manque vraiment ainsi la Guerre froide" ["I do so miss the Cold War!" by "M".] Making the popcorn for this one on a Saturday night? Invite a crowd! It is a crowd pleaser! Plot tiwists and turns and twists back again--manages to keep the viewer guessing & spellbound!

Someone here on Flixster asked me this, (but I am sorry I cannot remember who) "Who played Le Chiffre's girlfriend in Casino Royale (the new James Bond movie)?? " I cannot remmember...I am sure that the actress was Ivana Milicevic (whose photo I found on flixster--see below)...only she was blonde in that movie...o else Caterina Murino (whose photo I could NOT find!)...plus I think Caterina would have played a bigger role than Le Chiffre's girl friend did..

(1968 Director Alan Parker) One of Gene Hackman's most brilliant films!! A MUST SEE..So you THINK you know a little about the costs for freedom? civil rights? Lots more have bled than just hearts!! Please also note Spanish review by Ramiroguiller (in Comments section below...) Aquí hay una página para comenzar a ver otra realidad sobre los negros:
http://www.concytec.gob.pe/foroafroperuano/inventado.htm It is NOT a "Blood Diamond," but I found it to be a bold and moving film, along the lines of "To Kill a Mockingbird."

King Kong (2005,  PG-13)
King Kong
(2005 Director: Peter Jackson) MUST SEE!! Won 3 Oscars including Sound NOT ONLY did this screenplay remain true to the original novel by authors Merian C Cooper & Edgar Wallace ... BUT ALSO ...
Flixster - Share Movies
it developed the characters even more richly than the original film. How does THIS "King Kong" movie compare to the original 1933 Legendary King Kong starring Fay Wray? Or to the wonderful 1976 remake starring Jessica Lange as the damsel sacrificed. A group of producers collaborated to produce this movie (Jan Blenkin, Carolyn ne Cuningham, Fran Walsh & Peter Jackson) Even with magnificent Kong & other prehisotrics on Skull Island..and great special effects & scenery, it STILL remains true to the story line...but adds some wonderful classic touches of Downtown NYC (almost authenitc to the times of the 1930's!!) right down to the WW I fighter planes...and old style machine guns....NOT modern firepower...but THEN modern firepower to battle the "beast." Speaking of the story line...perhaps a word should be devoted to the writers of the original wonderful story, namely,Merian C Cooper & Edgar Wallace.

Jack Black is wonderful in this "character actor" role as the crazed (and financially desperate) movie producer....

Snow Falling on Cedars (1999,  PG-13)
Snow Falling on Cedars
David Guterson's bestselling novel came to the screen in 1999 through Austrailian Director Scott Hicks. Beautiful, artful and sensitive portrayal of love...and what time and war cannot do to stop true love...I would not call this a war movie (WW II in the U.S. American/Japanese during war & post-war era) Rather this touching Australian- madeto order love story is told in flash backs and involves all our senses. Pure, childhood love propels Ishmail Chambers (Ethan Hawke) son of a local independent newspaper/ publisher to unselfishly devotes his aide to the legal criminal defense of the Japanese husband of his Japanese childhood love, Hatsue Imada Miyamoto (Akira Takayama) This innocent defendant (SEE PHOTO BELOW) is beautifully defended by Max Von Sydow who plays an aging but valient defense attorney.

That might be where this story begins but it certainly captures more than sentimental appeal and a vivid courtroom drama. The heart of this story reveals a town very much prejudiced against the Japanese...during the beginning of World War II when yes some of the characters are rounded up and interred into prison camps here in the U.S.A.

Note: Some famous co-stars such as James Cromwell, Celia Weston, James Rebhorn (Prosecuting attorney).

My Super Ex-Girlfriend
(2006 Director Ivan Reitman) Uma Thurman is marvelous in this one! Great supporting cast... funy funny!

..And now for something completely different....unless you loved Spiderman...and Hancock...

If you saw the previews then you know Uma has superhuman powers. Yes definitely"campy"....for the sci fi, satire lovers!! Predictable sexual humor...Luke Wilson's character is not UP for the task of a girl friend, much less a super hero girlfriend!!

Navy Deep Sea Recovery (the men in the iron diving suits). The supporing cast is of equally high calibre & includes Charlize Theron as DeNiro's wealthy younger Southern belle who never gives up on him!.....Michael Rappaport & Powers Booth truly moved me in this film. Dune (1984,  PG-13)
Dune
(1964 Director: David Lynch) How I lLoved reading thiis Frank Herbert SCIENCE FICTION BOOK. 1964 C.A.M.P.Y. low budget B movie is the bomb! I'm loving it! More than half way thru (& trying to complete a semsester of Spanish, Student Intershipsips & endless essays & research & & &...) FUN with a capital F! Whew! Incredibly erotic written by Frank Herbert. There are 5 sequels (books) to the original "Dune" Patrick Stewart is one of his trainers--his comparable martial arts/military weapons coach! You won't recognize him but Kyle MacLachlan plays the young Paul Atriedes (Sex in the City's Charlotte's 1st hubby)!! {"quoting"This Hugo and Nebula Award winner [author Frank Herbert] tells the sweeping tale of a desert planet called Arrakis, the focus of an intricate power struggle in a byzantine interstellar empire. Arrakis is the sole source of Melange, the "spice of spices." Melange is necessary for interstellar travel and grants psychic powers and longevity, so whoever controls it wields great influence. . . The troubles begin when stewardship of Arrakis is transferred by the Emperor from the Harkonnen Noble House to House Atreides. The Harkonnens don't want to give up their privilege, though, and through sabotage and treachery they cast young Duke Paul Atreides out into the planet's harsh environment to die. There he falls in with the Fremen, a tribe of desert dwellers who become the basis of the army with which he will reclaim what's rightfully his. Paul Atreides, though, is far more than just a usurped duke. He might be the end product of a very long-term genetic experiment designed to breed a super human; he might be a messiah. His struggle is at the center of a nexus of powerful people and events, and the repercussions will be felt throughout the Imperium.

Dune is one of the most famous science fiction novels ever written, and deservedly so. The setting is elaborate and ornate, the plot labyrinthine, the adventures exciting. Five sequels follow. --Brooks Peck [ALSO SEE A FRIEND'S REVIEW OF THIS MOVIE (UNDER PURPLE ROSE OF CAIRO!) he FORGOT MAX VON SYDOW PHOTO BELOW...see him at his more recent best in Snow Falling on Cedars]

Another amazing role for BOTH Robert DeNiro & Samuel L. Jackson...based on the book Rum Punch written by Elmore Leonard. [thank you for identifying this book title, JohnChristie & GaryStev!] I searched on www. goodreads.com & Quentin Tarantino (Director) wrote this screenplay. Bridget Fonda is quite the tease in this flick!! This much I remember about it (when it came out).. I watched an interview (Perhaps David Letterman?) where Quentin Tarantino made this film keeping a long ago made promise to the amazing lead actress, Pam Grier--aka a role for her!

(2001 Director: Peter Chelsom) Well acted & interesting tale of a cynical psychologist who chance encounters her soul mate but who is in such denial that she purposely near jinxes it!

Must See! Cusack is phenominal. Best performance of Kate Beckinsale (Evolution).

My son has this in his top 10 movies & with the amazing supporting characters' performances I can see why. Each enlists his/her best friend in a desperate attempt to determine if in fact these 2 are "intended". Those talented "best buddies" are none other than Jeremy Piven (Rush Hour) & Molly Shannon. Eugene Levy (American Pie) co-stars in a supporting role as the Macy's salesclerk who plays a somewhat instrumental role in reuniting the pair! Hiliarious in parts! John Corbett (Dreamland, Raising Helen, Lucky, My Big Fat Greek Wedding & Sex in the City) is stunning as a world famous hip musician engaged to Beckinsale.

(2003 Director: Nancy Meyers) Perhaps it was the direction that makes this film such a fragile but successful true-to-life picture portrait of the anxiety between the sexes..and ages! The gorgeous Amande Peet plays the daughter of successful broadway playwright Erica Barry (Diane Keaton). Amanda brings her "date" (Jack Nicholson) up to her mother"s lovely seaside estate for the weekend thinking Mom is away. Cannot believe I forgot to review this movie!! MUST SEE!! Funny tho serious themes....love across the generations. Equally funny Francis McDermond offers a wonderful performance as Erica Barry (Diane Keaton)'s wry, free-spriited & engaging sister!! Despite some remarkable acting, I felt the editing could have been less choppy. I am not referring to the flashback sequences...where DiCapprio's character remembers some of these "big" gang leaders from when he was just a small 5 yr old boy (orphaned & arriving from Ireland)....More an attempt at an almost artistic statement surrounding conscription (unless you could pay $300 to AVOID the draft), immigration, monopolization/gang ....Extreme violence, raw in many, many parts. COULD NOT watch this film straight through... Bill the Butcher's from-the-gut speech to his "apprentice" Amsterdam (DiCapprio), was the closest thing to tender in this movie & it stays with me.....that is--except for the love that evolves between Diaz & DiCapprio's characters...wheeewwwww [true compassion of spirit & mutual empathy]

Equally, however, I was moved by Cameron Diaz's performance & the story of her character & her "scar"(much worse than my own) but a significantly deeper scarring of her psyche...life as a street urchin from age 12 (orphaned) & taken in by the seemingly compassionless Bill the Butcher (crime boss)......so many faces his character shows...Bill's lasting admiration for "Amsterdam's" dash aka guts....Bill even uses a bible quotation, "Lukewarm, neither hot nor cold, I will spew you out..."

Wanted
(2008 Director: Timur Bekmambetov) Surprising! Watch it for the ride--I DID! This film held my interest if a little thin in plot integrity Some depth not ALL show! Kudos to Director Bekmambetov! I was not expecting too much but I was pleasantly surprised by this film, especially its editing. Certainly does not drag

Some good performances & kept me guessing. I had been wondering about some of the newer films. My son bought Wanted starring Angelina Jolie & James McAvoy with a much thinner Morgan Freeman in a rather dark role...but I tell you too much. Best to just experience this movie! I think you might enjoy Wanted. It sucks you completely in...in that sense it is true entertain- ment. Might compare it but cautiously to the feel of a Butterfly Effect..perhaps its the use of some special effects to show the unusual extra sense of the lead character who has reached that age of life where he feels completely adrift amidst his dull corporate work life & blaze' girlfriend, questioning his entire existence then along pops Angelina (NOT as a love interest but with his answer to all his seeking, an explanation!).

(2007 Director: Tony Gilroy) I heard lead actor George Clooney interviewed on I think Conan O'Brien..he suffered some personal inuries in making this one. An interesting note is that his own father was a journalist, something he drew upon for his acting in this one [i THINK it was THIS MOVIE?! HUMMMM.] Personally I do so enjoy the amazing versatility of actor Tom Wilkinson (He plays a manic-depressive attorney who has gone off his medication & risks a $6 billion product liability case.. awesome acting) Hard to describe this movie other than to say, MUST SEEE! or to quote J. Laidlow aka RideroftheStorm's quote of Clayton (Clooney's) character, "I am SHIVA God of Death!" Good ending! [Review: "Full Story: http://www.imdb.com
George Clooney is already conceding Best Actor Oscar victory to Daniel Day-Lewis, claiming no one has a chance against the British star. The pair are on the shortlist for the prize at this month's ceremony, alongside Viggo Mortensen for Eastern Promises, Tommy Lee Jones for In The Valley Of Elah and Johnny Depp for Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber Of Fleet Street. But Clooney has already given up hope of winning for his role in Michael Clayton - to add to his Best Supporting Academy Award for Syriana - after watching Day-Lewis in his nominated role in There Will Be Blood. He says, "If you want my honest opinion, I think it's going to be Daniel Day-Lewis. He sort of irritates all of us because he's so good. I'll tell you right now, I don't like him!" "]

The Golden Compass (2007,  PG-13)
The Golden Compass
(2007 Director: Chris Weitz) Simply dynamite tale done WITHOUT animation & only limited special effects. It would appear (to me) to be set in the past. I base this on the unusual, no rather somewhat fantastic actually "ocular crystal slide projector-like device" (almost Benjamin Franklin or Gallieleo-like)!

No, I had not read the book first. Yes I immensely enjoyed this film.

Fantastic cast, including Sam Elliott, Ian McClellan! Uncle Lord Asriel (Daniel Craig), Mrs. Coulter (Nicole Kidman) Lyra, the lovely nieice of Lord Asrielm, joins Mrs. Coulter on an adventure. Meanwhile her Uncle has also left for the North in search of "dust," magical dust it would appear, though it is forbidden to speak of this dust....This story is based on a novel by Philip Pullman, an author who avoids the good & bad of relligion [read on for a little more depth on that subject] yet chose to name the "pets" of the characters as "demons," Wonderful performance by Ian McLellan as the voice of the wonderful armored polar bear without whom's help Lyla could never have rescued her classmate from the dreadful experiment.

With the gift of the last remaining golden compassm Lyra can read the future--ior more speciifically obtain the answer to any questions.

Oh, is that why a child's demon can change shapes (shapeshift) but an adult's can't? " Lyra asks her Uncle.

Ian McLellan does the wonderful voice of the fiierce polar bear..
Based on the controversial book, "Northern Lights," by Phillip Pullman.

Excerpt of SFF Media's John Holamn's 12/07 review: "Set in a fantastical parallel world, the movie begins with a young orphan, Lyra, discovering that she is at the centre of a deadly conspiracy and that the lives of many children depend on her. Lyra is in possession of The Golden Compass, a powerful tool that the Magisterium, an evil church-like body that dominates and controls this parallel world, wants to recover at all costs. She embarks on an epic journey to the far north to save her best friend.

With a massive US$180 million budget from Newline, The Golden Compass stars two of the biggest names in Hollywood, Nicole Kidman and the new James Bond, Daniel Craig. Kidman plays the movie's villain, the enchanting but evil socialite Mrs Coulter, while Daniel Craig plays the heroic Lord Asriel, Lyra's tough, mysterious uncle.

Apparently Kidman, a Catholic, was Phillip Pullman's first choice ten years before the movie went into production. At first unwilling to commit, Kidman signed on only after receiving a letter from Pullman and an undertaking from producers that the anti-Catholic tone of the book would be watered down.

Chris Weitz, best known for writing and directing About a Boy, is Writer and Director here too.

With eye-popping visuals of futuristic airships, talking armoured ice bears, shape-shifting creatures, witches, stunning city scapes, along with obligatory rough looking pirates, The Golden Compass appears to have all the right ingredients for box office success. "

". . . Obvious or subtle, an anti-religious slant (Christian or otherwise), metaphysical speculations about the nature of God, or direct questioning of established beliefs shouldn't stop anyone going to see The Golden Compass. This type of speculation is what makes science fiction and fantasy so intriguing. Creating hypothetical, polarised worlds is a great way to explore the everyday from different perspectives, question belief systems, and challenge-preconceived notions.. . . "

All The King's Men
(2006 Director: Steve Zaillian) It is possible to say too much about a movie, in that spirit, see this one for Sean Penn's (Best Actor-MILK) passion (borderline megalomania), & Anthony Hopkins (Silence of the Lambs) portrayinjg a distinguished retired Southern Judge & incredibly cute Jude Law (Closer, The Holiday) who lost his accent & donned a Southern accent for this flick. Penn plays a state senator who rides a longshot into office as Governor--a man who has foresight & vision into what destiny he sees for his home state. Impassioned but never dull..All the King;s Men is a wonderful showcase for these seasoned actors. None of these men were ever better...as good perhaps but never BETTER! Anthony Hopkins? Well, his career has been soo diverse as to have included a role as Paul (Saul of Tarsus) which he brought depth and character to like none other.

After reading most others' reviews, must I say it again??? FOR ITS TIME PERIOD, this film had good special effects + amazing creativity in dream sequences, etc. 2 DEFINITE THUMBS UP!! LOL

Unfaithful (2002,  R)
Unfaithful
(2002 Diector: Adrian Lyne) Outstanding performances by Richard Gere and Diane Lane & the awesomely sexy Olivier Martinez. Also the then relatively unknown Michelle Monaghan in a supporting role. Story of a passionate affair that happened quite by accident between the happily married suburban Mom & an intriguing stranger "house sitting" a friend's loft and book store business. Beautifully edited. Sobering tale of lust and passions complicating an otherwise superb life. MUST SEE if only for the passion between each of these characters.

Diane Lane & Richard Gere have a superb life. Diane is a wonderful mother of one son (Erik Per Sullivan) who seems happy & well adjusted. Was she looking to complicate her life? No! She has a perchance trip into town....and encounters young, vibrant Olivier who is simply irresistible.

Neither husband nor wife anticipated how much of themselves & their passions they had left behind in relocating into the suburbs....Music, editing, everything is superb in this very very passionate story.......in my TOP 10 FAVORITE FILMS........

Lovely tale though sad of Nicholson and Freeman who meet in the Oncology Ward--2 patients living their end days/months with gusto and compiling their own individual, unique bucket lists.....Tho a most unusual pairing 2 men of different race and social status share the common link of a terminal diagnosis. the result? a most moving film I watched in the last month or 2 before my own father's passing. Memorable!!

Take the Lead (2006,  PG-13)
Take the Lead
{2006 Director: Liz Friedlander) "It takes a village to raise a child." Stunning performances (Loved seeing Antonio Banderas ride a bicycle to the high school & when he gave pickup lessons inadvertently)......Cute.

Imagine Antnonio Banderas dressed in full suit appearing at the toughest high school you can picture...well, then you are picturing the setting for this movie.

International appeal is what dance has and that is exactly what dance instructor Pierre Dulane (Antonio Banderas) conveys with lots of appeal. Why does Mr. Dulane show up at school? He witnessed a student take a baseball bat to the Principal's car! MUST SEE!!

The Boondock Saints (1999,  R)
The Boondock Saints
(1999 Director: Troy Duffy) Don't spare the blood and guts!! Setting: Boston. Movie opens with a traffic cop pulling over a limo in a routine traffic stop--something which pisses off the Mob boss passenger. After a short while the cop returns and blows them all away clean. He doesn't stop there.

Two Irish Catholic boys go on vengeance sprees against the Mafia. A third awkward duck (David Della Rocco) joins them. (Willem Dafoe (Green Goblin--Superman) is the lead detective trying to figure out the opening murder & many successive murders. He becomes obsessed with the crimes & there are some almost surrealistic dramatic scenes over this.

Great cast! Interesting! Billy Connolly in a very surprise role! Guess I should thank our own Channel 5 for showing it today (Saturday) evening. JUST IN TIME FOR THE SEQUEL coming out soon. Based on a true story??
