Four Weddings and a Funeral (1994, R)
One of my very true favorite movies! It might be sappy except maybe you too have realized (almost too late) who your true love was???

La Guerre du Feu (Quest for Fire) (The War of Fire) (1981, R)
(1981 Director: Jean-Jacques Annuad) RAW! BRILLIANT!! This is TRUE primitive prehistoric man...yes, of course there is brutality tribalism competitiveness & raw sexuality!! Has much changed?? Lost In Translation (2003, R)
(Sept. 2003 Director: Sofia Coppola) I LOVED Scarlet Johansen & Bill Murray together!! Dead pan? Have you never spent a week across the country in the madness of a convention? or or been to Toyko? [ I have not..but know those who have) Both Scarlett & Bill are stuck for about 1 week in Toyko, Japan..Bill to make a Japanese Whiskey commercial...Scartlett travelling with her photographer new husband who is rarely available encounters Bill Murray and quickly develops a friendship. There is a kinship between these 2 due to perhaps being displaced in Japan? |

(May 2004 Director Wolfgang Peterson) Well, certainly Brad Pitt's (Achilles of Legend) finest movie. Proof that talent and looks are not the same thing indeed!! Go Brad!! And all over German born Diane Kruger's youth & beauty (She is simply Angelic in this movie!!) Did I mention the spectacular performance by Brian Cox? Orlando Bloom? Children of Men (2006, R)
(Dec. 2006 Director: Alfonso Cuaron)Based on the book by P.D. James. The film won Best Cinematography at the 2007 BAFTA Awards.. To me had a style reminiscent of 70's films....Mad Maxx, Soylent Green...and in that vein perhaps more art than sustenance, Loved the retrogade view of the world coming undone! Complex subjects--a future where no one can conceive and plagues occur often. Clive Owen stars as Julianne Moore's ex-husband who becomes enlisted into the cause of preserving the life of one young female who has miraculously conceived--and to transport here and her offspring to a safe haven (a ship)! |

Casino Royale (2006, PG-13)
(Nov. 2006 Director: Martin Campbell) In a word "ACTION" Set in first Uganda..where this new James Bond catches the scent of a major operative... which leads him to Miami, FL & the unveiling of a new super jet (which it seems is a target of terrorists)..Bond goes off the radar (much to M's chagrin) Wonderfully edited by Stuart Baird, the film showcases the new Daniel Crag as almost a cross between Robert Conrad (Wild Wild West) Russian Uri (Secret Agent Man) & Robert Patrick (Terminator II the liquid terminator)..except Craig is steely eyed....Craig (as Bond) runs without tiring...his first chases he is following an Afrikan who flees Bond litterally bouncing from building to building as if he were Spiderman..or as if he had Flubber shoes!! |
|
| 26 |
Iron Will (1994, PG)
(1994 Director: Charles Haid) 1917 Winnipeg-to-St.-Paul Dog Sled Race....Kevin Spacey plays his villainous role deliciously! Do not listen to this dreadful reviewer who wrote this derrogatory blurb! This is truly quite a magnificent movie....the reviewer must have his mind in the gutter (& x-rated flicks!) |

Snow Falling on Cedars (1999, PG-13)
David Guterson's bestselling novel came to the screen in 1999 through Austrailian Director Scott Hicks. Beautiful, artful and sensitive portrayal of love...and what time and war cannot do to stop true love...I would not call this a war movie (WW II in the U.S. American/Japanese during war & post-war era) Rather this touching Australian- madeto order love story is told in flash backs and involves all our senses. Pure, childhood love propels Ishmail Chambers (Ethan Hawke) son of a local independent newspaper/ publisher to unselfishly devotes his aide to the legal criminal defense of the Japanese husband of his Japanese childhood love, Hatsue Imada Miyamoto (Akira Takayama) This innocent defendant (SEE PHOTO BELOW) is beautifully defended by Max Von Sydow who plays an aging but valient defense attorney. |

OLD MEDIEVAL TIME FRANCE, I BELIEVE (Charles II) ....even a penned author (female Elizabeth Barry) in this tale!! God, the depiction of syphillis...Will NEVER look at Johnny Depp and think pretty (sexy) boy again!! |

The Untouchables (1987, R)
(January 2001 DVD release) |
|
| 39 |
The Waterboy (1998, PG-13)
(1998 Director: Frank Coraci)....Hmm...Henry Winkler as the "bad guy" ...a young & sensitive "coming of age" Adam Sanderl...This story has humor(dark hum,or perhaps?) but allows for real feeling!! NOT as hammy as it appears on the survace.. I was BORN IN THE HILLS...and the mom's (Kathy Bates) performance & manipulation by warnings of "the Devil" are reminiscent..... |
|
| 40 |
The Island (2005, PG-13)
(2005 Direcrtor: Michael Bay) 6 STARS!! INNOVATIVE, BEAUTIFUL, ARTFUL, WITH HUMOR ,FEELING, IMAGINATION!! Go Ewan McGregor WOW! What a ride!! IN HONOR OF FUTURE SHOCK WEEK!! Innocent clones EWAN MCGREGOR, STEVE BUSCEMI IS TREMENDOUS IN THIS! (PERHAPS MY FAVORITE CHARACTER) SEAN BEAN (Yes Sean Bean!), DIJOUN HOUNSOU (the Afrikan tracker), SCARLET JOHANNSEN [playing the lead, the clone of a top not surprisingly beautifup model] ...OTHER GREAT SUPPORTINGACTORS!! (recognize DEX?) CLONES...THIS IS A STORY (an imaginative story)...of what COULD happen....with the plot of profit over morality in the "business" of the clone industry!! MUST SEE!!! Favorite quotations? "I would like it in blue, please!" AND "Clones don't wear those.." |

National Treasure (2004, PG)
(Nov. 2004 Director: John Turtletaub) Just saw this...and loved it! Lots of Nicholas Cage high energy & humor charges a racing plot.....themed around the quest for a treasure hunt based on clues in the Declaration of Independence...the plot thickens, shall we say?? Oohhhhh! Thrills, opens with a memorable childhood recollection of Benjamin Gates (Cage) as a youngster spying in the attic & followed by his superb gran-pere (none other than Christopher Plummer)....Even Harvey Keitel's talents are featured as the FBI head agent leading the investigation of Gates alias Woods & did I pay an honorable mention to Cage's wiley father (Jon Voight)?? ........This film also pays its tributes to our historical foun |

Men of Honor (2000, R)
(2000 Director: George Tillman, Jr.) This is a true story of Carl Braesher & perhaps for that reason is in parts hard to watch (endure the racisms) And this film stars some of my favorite actos/actresses, starring Robert DeNiro as a very rough but real Solider & Cuba Gooding, jr. as the son of a poor rural dirt farmer with a wish for a better life for his son.... Navy Deep Sea Recovery (the men in the iron diving suits). The supporing cast is of equally high calibre & includes Charlize Theron as DeNiro's wealthy younger Southern belle who never gives up on him!.....Michael Rappaport & Powers Booth truly moved me in this film. Definitely a worth see... |

Dune (1984, PG-13)
(1964 Director: David Lynch) How I lLoved reading thiis Frank Herbert SCIENCE FICTION BOOK. 1964 C.A.M.P.Y. low budget B movie is the bomb! I'm loving it! More than half way thru (& trying to complete a semsester of Spanish, Student Intershipsips & endless essays & research & & &...) FUN with a capital F! Whew! Incredibly erotic written by Frank Herbert. There are 5 sequels (books) to the original "Dune" Patrick Stewart is one of his trainers--his comparable martial arts/military weapons coach! You won't recognize him but Kyle MacLachlan plays the young Paul Atriedes (Sex in the City's Charlotte's 1st hubby)!! {"quoting"This Hugo and Nebula Award winner [author Frank Herbert] tells the sweeping tale of a desert planet called Arrakis, the focus of an intricate power struggle in a byzantine interstellar empire. Arrakis is the sole source of Melange, the "spice of spices." Melange is necessary for interstellar travel and grants psychic powers and longevity, so whoever controls it wields great influence. . . The troubles begin when stewardship of Arrakis is transferred by the Emperor from the Harkonnen Noble House to House Atreides. The Harkonnens don't want to give up their privilege, though, and through sabotage and treachery they cast young Duke Paul Atreides out into the planet's harsh environment to die. There he falls in with the Fremen, a tribe of desert dwellers who become the basis of the army with which he will reclaim what's rightfully his. Paul Atreides, though, is far more than just a usurped duke. He might be the end product of a very long-term genetic experiment designed to breed a super human; he might be a messiah. His struggle is at the center of a nexus of powerful people and events, and the repercussions will be felt throughout the Imperium. |

Jackie Brown (1997, R)
Another amazing role for BOTH Robert DeNiro & Samuel L. Jackson...based on the book Rum Punch written by Elmore Leonard. [thank you for identifying this book title, JohnChristie & GaryStev!] I searched on www. goodreads.com & Quentin Tarantino (Director) wrote this screenplay. Bridget Fonda is quite the tease in this flick!! This much I remember about it (when it came out).. I watched an interview (Perhaps David Letterman?) where Quentin Tarantino made this film keeping a long ago made promise to the amazing lead actress, Pam Grier--aka a role for her! |

|
| 67 |
Something's Gotta Give (2003, PG-13)
(2003 Director: Nancy Meyers) Perhaps it was the direction that makes this film such a fragile but successful true-to-life picture portrait of the anxiety between the sexes..and ages! The gorgeous Amande Peet plays the daughter of successful broadway playwright Erica Barry (Diane Keaton). Amanda brings her "date" (Jack Nicholson) up to her mother"s lovely seaside estate for the weekend thinking Mom is away. Cannot believe I forgot to review this movie!! MUST SEE!! Funny tho serious themes....love across the generations. Equally funny Francis McDermond offers a wonderful performance as Erica Barry (Diane Keaton)'s wry, free-spriited & engaging sister!! Of course Keanu Reeves as a young talented doctor is not to be missed!! Great rapport between Nicholson & Keaton..some moments are priceless |
|
| 68 |
Proof (2005, PG-13)
(2005 Director: John Madden) Dazzling. Loved it! Touching film... |

Based on the book by James Bradley (2006 Directors: Clint Eastwood & Steven Spielberg) Wonderful tribute to the men who died & who survived WW II in Japan. (1999 Director: Francois Girard) Had been looking forward to this one--and it was not a dissappointment! Story follows the "life" of this red violin created as a masterpiece by Niccolo Brazzolo in 1683! Tragic storyline. This violin survives incredible changes in the times since it was made--Renaissance thru Chairman Mao obtaining power in China! My son already wants to study violin.....a red Stratavaious!? I AM UNSURE WHICH ACTORS' PERFORMANCES I ENJOYED THE MOST! DO RENT/BUY THIS ONE & PLEASE SHARE IT! Samuel L. Jackson is I believe something of his true self in this one! |

The Ghost and the Darkness (1996, R)
Val Kilmer was only better in Alexander the Great than in this movie!! HOT!! Hmmm film is set in 1898...which is significant because of the train..and I suppose somewhat primitive rifles. KIND OF ON AN AFRICAN-THEMED KICK Omi Pur has a great role and so does Bernard Hil. Well developed plot & I would enjoy seeing M Douglas & Val together again!! Good chemistry in this filml |

Sin City (2005, R)
(2005 Directors: Robert Rodriguez & Comic Creator: Frank Miller) True to the comic book story. LOVED IT! It helps if you like Bruce Willis and have lived a somewhat real life...Eerie storyline but until midway thru I hardly noticed that becuz I was soo intrigued by the comic booky charaters!! Deals with psychos, stalkers, hookers, and cops in a old style cop movie way (but updated green effects? comic booky almost!) GOOD NEWS!! SEQUELS ARE IN THE WORKS!! The stars really shine on this including: Benecio del Toro Rosario Dawson, Josh Hartnett (Snow Falling on Cedars), Clive Owen (Closer, Children of Men, King Arthur) |

The Devil's Advocate (1997, R)
(1997 Director: Taylor Hackford) Delightfully full of foreshadowing yet the intense plot just slowly creeps along... Refreshingly imaginative with incredible performances by Keanu Reeves, Al Pacino & Ms Charlise Therone! How he uses vanity to pull Reeves into his own scheme is amazing!! |
|
| 93 |
Michael Clayton (2007, R)
(2007 Director: Tony Gilroy) I heard lead actor George Clooney interviewed on I think Conan O'Brien..he suffered some personal inuries in making this one. An interesting note is that his own father was a journalist, something he drew upon for his acting in this one [i THINK it was THIS MOVIE?! HUMMMM.] Personally I do so enjoy the amazing versatility of actor Tom Wilkinson (He plays a manic-depressive attorney who has gone off his medication & risks a $6 billion product liability case.. awesome acting) Hard to describe this movie other than to say, MUST SEEE! or to quote J. Laidlow aka RideroftheStorm's quote of Clayton (Clooney's) character, "I am SHIVA God of Death!" Good ending! [Review: "Full Story: http://www.imdb.com |

The Golden Compass (2007, PG-13)
(2007 Director: Chris Weitz) Simply dynamite tale done WITHOUT animation & only limited special effects. It would appear (to me) to be set in the past. I base this on the unusual, no rather somewhat fantastic actually "ocular crystal slide projector-like device" (almost Benjamin Franklin or Gallieleo-like)! |

The Sixth Sense (1999, PG-13)
(1999 Director: M. Night Shyamalan) Just love Bruce Willis. This child star (Haley Joel Osment) has simply the best facial expressions to be found. toni Collette (Shaft) has the most sensitive face that could have been chosen to play this excedptional chlid's mother! MUST SEE!! Will leave you touched & your heart pounding!! |

All The King's Men (2006, PG-13)
(2006 Director: Steve Zaillian) It is possible to say too much about a movie, in that spirit, see this one for Sean Penn's (Best Actor-MILK) passion (borderline megalomania), & Anthony Hopkins (Silence of the Lambs) portrayinjg a distinguished retired Southern Judge & incredibly cute Jude Law (Closer, The Holiday) who lost his accent & donned a Southern accent for this flick. Penn plays a state senator who rides a longshot into office as Governor--a man who has foresight & vision into what destiny he sees for his home state. Impassioned but never dull..All the King;s Men is a wonderful showcase for these seasoned actors. None of these men were ever better...as good perhaps but never BETTER! Anthony Hopkins? Well, his career has been soo diverse as to have included a role as Paul (Saul of Tarsus) which he brought depth and character to like none other. |

The Fly (1986, R)
(1986 Director: David Cronenburg) Okay..2 of my VERY FAVORITES!! GEENA DAVIS AND JEFFREY GOLDBLUM!! Does it get any better? No...seriously worse for this hot young passionate scientist (played by Jeffrey Goldblum)...NO POPCORN FOR THIS MOVIE!! Oh...baby!! If ANYONE could be sexy while degenerating...it is the young, hunky exceptional Jeffrey Goldblum!! HUBBA HUBBA paired with none other than the future 1st female U.S. President herself (Geena Davis)! After reading most others' reviews, must I say it again??? FOR ITS TIME PERIOD, this film had good special effects + amazing creativity in dream sequences, etc. 2 DEFINITE THUMBS UP!! LOL |

Unfaithful (2002, R)
(2002 Diector: Adrian Lyne) Outstanding performances by Richard Gere and Diane Lane & the awesomely sexy Olivier Martinez. Also the then relatively unknown Michelle Monaghan in a supporting role. Story of a passionate affair that happened quite by accident between the happily married suburban Mom & an intriguing stranger "house sitting" a friend's loft and book store business. Beautifully edited. Sobering tale of lust and passions complicating an otherwise superb life. MUST SEE if only for the passion between each of these characters. |

Take the Lead (2006, PG-13)

The Boondock Saints (1999, R)
(1999 Director: Troy Duffy) Don't spare the blood and guts!! Setting: Boston. Movie opens with a traffic cop pulling over a limo in a routine traffic stop--something which pisses off the Mob boss passenger. After a short while the cop returns and blows them all away clean. He doesn't stop there. |
