My favorite of the Ridley quadrilogy. (I don't count that AVP crap as part of the franchise) Don't be fooled kids, Aliens are not cool; they are scary as fuck, and that makes for one hell of a good movie.

American Gangster
Ridley Scott ticks another genre box on his list, with this very satisfying gangster movie. A brilliant eye opener, with performances for the ages. Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe are perfectly cast, and more than compliment this dark tale. American Gangster offers up some of the best drama of the year, which will stay with you for a long time, and that's always the sign of a strong dramatic tale. Scott's gangster epic is a thoroughly rewarding experience, and one of the best movies I've seen from the genre recently.

Audition (Ôdishon) (1999,  R)
Audition (Ôdishon)
Audition is a cinematic drugs trip. Throwing you all over the place, leaving you to decide where you are.

Shiina is genuinly scary, and gives off a questionable vibe; you know from the start that you can't trust her character. The suspense comes from waiting for her to start her assault, you know its coming, you just don't know when. Miike has paced everything brilliantly.

I don't really see Audition as a horror, sure its scary, horrific and simply tense, but its nothing close to cliche or stereotypical. It asks too much from the viewers mind for it to be a simpllistic and formulaic horror outing.

Miike's Audition is one of a kind, and I highly reccomend it to everyone; horror fan or not.

Back to the Future Part II
HELL YEAH! My favorite of the trilogy. This is the best due to setting and plot.

The setting (being the "future"), is the best they could have chosen. It is great fun to explore the crazy world and see all the so called "future" gadgets.

The plot is equally fun, it takes some nice turns and twists; which is nice for an adventure movie, and links up great with the past movie... which we actually get to revisit.

This movie is the main reason that BTTF is one of my favorite trilogies. Just make sure you start with Part I.

Bad Boys (1995,  R)
Bad Boys
One of the best buddy movies. Two cool guys, blowing stuff up in a cool fashion, while shouting cool swear words! Run of the mill, but great fun. Possibly the only good Michael Bay movie.

You feel cool watching this movie, Snipes character is a real black bad ass; you know the kind. The action is fast, the plot is dumb but cool, and the baddies are... well, real bad. This movie dark with great action, and actually memorable.
59
Blade II (Blade 2) (2002,  R)

The premise of 'Bubba Ho-Tep' is a lot more exciting than the actual movie. 'Bubba Ho-Tep' is a slow moving comedy, with many wasted opportunities. While the performances are brilliant, the writing comes across as a little disjointed.

Dead Alive (Braindead) (1993,  R)
Dead Alive (Braindead)
'Braindead' (or to use the not so appropriate title - 'Dead Alive') is one of Jackson's earlier releases, and definatly one of his best. If you thought you had fun watching the epic battles in the LOTR trilogy, you have no idea what this film has in store for you. If you like gore, and by like I mean LOVE, then this is most definatly your film. Interesting fact, Jackson went over his blood budget when making this, and it's vey easy to see. Every scene is packed full of blood, limbs, and cheesey comedy. It's the zombie fans dream. Ok, so maybe it's not for the easily disturbed, or weak stomached, but if you can get past the level of gore, then there is definatly fun to be had here. Sit back, grab a snack or two, and be prepared to laugh and smile at the on screen violence.

Child's Play
I haven't checked out the Chucky franchise before, but the premise has always excited me. While I can't say I found this first film truly scary, Chucky was certainly creepy. The effects have held up suprisingly well, even though it all looks more than a little cheesy. All in all, this is good 80s fun, and I definitely plan on watching the rest of the series.

The Departed (2006,  R)
The Departed
Scorsese masterfully weaves a movie of suspense, action and cinematic flare. If only all American remakes were like this, then I'd have no reason to doubt them.

The Departed grabs you from the start, and manages to keep you in its grasp for the long runtime. Acting is above average, with stand out performances from Leonardo DiCaprio and Mark Wahlberg. All characters come across as deep, tough and multi-dimensional. The casting is close to perfect.

The plot is edgey, smart and paced brilliantly. With smooth cutting and well placed scenes, the movie never begins to feel too long. Events on screen have purpose, are precise and essential for the most part.

'Do I reccomend The Departed?' Yes, if you like Scorsese's past work then you wont be dissapointed. If you don't like his past work, or hate remakes in general, then you might be pleasently suprised. I'm very happy to say that Scorcsese makes this his own.

The Departed definatly passed my expectations, and is a solid, strong, and memorable remake. Good job Scorsese... good job.

Fong juk (Exiled)
Johnnie To's Exiled does something brilliant, it takes what we love about old Hong Kong films, and combines it with the approach of modern day cinema to bring us something fresh and lasting. You have a combination of gritty, realistic shootouts, masculine but heartfelt friendships on screen, and simply great story-telling. Exiled delivers on almost every level, and is perfect for the To veteran, and even stone cold newcomers.

Jet Li's Fearless (Huo Yuan Jia) (Legend of a Fighter) (2006,  PG-13)
Jet Li's Fearless (Huo Yuan Jia) (Legend of a Fighter)
This is a good martial arts movie. Its nothing particually special, which is a shame as Li has announced it will be his last MA flick.

The fighting scenes consist of good hand to hand combat, and use of weapons, and Li lives up to his standards as usual. There are no particually epic fights or memorable ones, apart from maybe the one on one in the restaurant.

Nothing much happens plot wise, and its seems it is simply there in order to allow the fights to take place. The acting is good though, and I did care enough about the characters (Li), due to some slighty emotional scenes, which helped me dismiss the fact the script was nothing strong. (I was watching the worst english subs ever though... THEY WERE AWFUL!)

Overall this is a good MA movie, and provides a solid performance from Li and others. If you are after a movie which will keep you entertained visually rather than prehaps mentally, then this might be for you. Good throw away fun.

The trio do it again, this is British comedy at it's best. The genre fans dream! Maybe it's not as fresh feeling or original as SOTD, but that doesn't really matter. The action scenes towards the end are fantastic too, they could easily rival any of the current american attempts, with the plus of leaving a cheaky grin all over your face.

As for the story; yes its pretty simple, but it fits perfectly, its a touching love story, but a cool one at that. Karas: The Prophecy (2006,  Unrated)
Karas: The Prophecy
Karas is a vague and sketchy anime adventure. The first three volumes linked in 'The Prophecy' provide great entertainment. The anime is visually stunning and packed with action, as for the plot, it's definatly interesting and gripping, but you have to work your way through the lack of information your provided with for it to become so.

Not alot is explained or made clear within the first three volumes, as to what is actually happening on screen, fortunatly for the viewer though, it seems the creators are aware of this, and provide us with text to guide us through. With the DVD comes a lengthy blurb on the back of the box, and a detailed poster of information regarding the story and it's characters.

The challenge of going that bit further to follow the film may put some off, but Karas has alot to offer the patient and forgiving viewer. Maybe it's not the best form of story telling, and the film is definatly not flawless, but Karas is merely trying to hide it's flashy visuals and basic plot behind fan research. I applaud it for this, because if you really want to enjoy a film like Karas, then you should be willing to give it that extra bit of time and effort.

Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang
This movie was very strong, alot stronger than I was expecting. I guess that was due to its originality, which I was not planning on when I picked it up in the rental store.

The movie is strong due to three factors, the actors, the script, and the direction. Kilmer and Downey are perfect casting, their roles are superbly written, and they create fantastic chemistry on screen. The one-liners these two throw back and forth at one another are so well timed, and the duo do a brilliant job in containing the fantastic writing. All the other performances are ridiculously strong as well, including that of Michelle Monaghan, as the flirty and naive love interest (if you were to call her that) .

The direction of this film is superb. The camera work is really creative, from the fixed shots to the choice of angles. The flash backs are well presented, especially with the witty commentary of Downey placed over the top. The choice of music is wonderful and compliments the movies theme perfectly; it was actually the first thing I noticed.

All in all this movie was much more than I expected, and now I'll seriously have to reconsider my views on Val Kilmer. After viewing this Im going to be relying on fellow Flixster users reviews and ratings much more often.

The Hong Kong fire department simply serves as a backdrop for the well acted domestic drama early on, and it seems the film could just as easily be following a police department. While engrossing, the many ongoing subplots are eventually dropped, in favor of some actual firefighting; which is fine, as it's obvious they were destined to fizzle out otherwise.

The films finale presents an outstanding technical spectacle, as the leading cast members attempt to extinguish a widespread fire at a knitting factory. Here, To once again proves he can pretty much direct anything, including live fire. This climax helped to bring home two awards for the film at the 1998 Hong Kong Film Awards - Best Editing (Wong Wing-Mung) and Best Sound Effects; which were clearly well deserved.

Lifeline is an enjoyable popcorn flick, masquerading as something else until the final act, in which the genre masks are torn off with great force. This film showcases two very different sides of To as a director, the only problem is, they don't really glue. However, it's ultimately a good watch.

Yeopgijeogin geunyeo (My Sassy Girl)
'My Sassy Girl' chooses to stray away form the generic and cliche guidelines set by American romantic comedies, while keeping all it's charm and warmth intact. It's brilliantly written and directed. It's easy to see why it has become such a cult hit, and spawned so many similar Korean flicks after 2001.

The characters differ from what you would expect, especially the lead girl. This makes for unique gags and jokes on screen. Yes, it is quite long, and at first this seems like bad writing and pacing, but it is not until late into the film that you realise it is really going to take a while for the characters relationship to blossom. The ending is really the pay off, and one of the more memorable rom-com endings I can think of. It's great to know that these unique and quirky events are based on a series of true stories.

'My Sassy Girl' is a great addition to the over-populated genre, and one huge step in reinventing it for the better.

This is a really smooth little comedy. Full of great one-liners and memorable quotes, and peppered all over with great scenes. Wong gok hak yau (One Night in Mongkok) (2004,  Unrated)
Wong gok hak yau (One Night in Mongkok)
In a Hong Kong film genre which is busy and vibrant, it's hard for one particular film to hold it's own and stand out from the crowd. But I am happy to say that 'One Nite in Mongkok' manages to do a pretty good job of this when finding it self in the crime drama genre.

The plot is not particually orginal or attention grabbing, but the film is directed very well, and that is always the important factor, because it's how a story is told that really counts.

The chemistry between Wu and Cheung's characters is strong, and believable for the most part. This proves important for a film which concentrates mainly on a couple who are on the run together. In fact most of the performances are strong, and this helps to maintain the sespense and tension of events presented on screen. Especially the violence, which gets turned up a couple of levels towards the end, it's hard to watch, but ultimatly feels very rewarding, in the way that well directed dramatic violence always does.

Apart from a very abrupt ending, in which a short geography lesson seems to be thorwn our way, the film delivers. It's no where near perfect, but it's definatly gripping entertainment for the most part, and should keep even the largest veterans of the genre interested.

This movie is good and has a refreshing approach. Hanks is pretty good, and has a very different style of acting to his father. El Laberinto del Fauno (Pan's Labyrinth) (2006,  R)
El Laberinto del Fauno (Pan's Labyrinth)
I thought cinema on the whole had been bland this year, until two foreign films came along and totally changed things for me The first being the Host, and the second being this, Guillermo del Toro's Pan's Labyrinth.

All I really need to say is that this is Toro's masterpiece. What you take away from it will vary, depending on who you are. Though whatever you think of it, you are going to enjoy this film on some level.

Ivana Baquero is one of the best child actress's I have seen on screen in years, you instantly relate, feel and care for her character. She is wonderful, and I can't wait to see more work from her.

What Pan's Labyrinth delivers is a magical but gloomy world of images and sights. This film looks stunning, with its rich colours, extrodinary use of CGI, and fantastic cinematography. Its simply captivating, you'll find it extremely hard to move your eyes; not that you'd want to.

It may sound pretty and fun, but don't for one moment get the impression that this is a bright, and magical little fairytale. This film is dark, harsh, and brutal, but at the same time beautiful; a little like the world we live in today.

You'll only really "get" Labyrinth if you know your history. Im not great with it, so I was more than a little pleased to drag a historian along to my viewing. They were also blown away by the film, why? Because of all its powerful and well hidden metaphores. This is why I reccomend you watch closely, or bring along somebody who knows their stuff; as there are many subtle messages within this film which could easily fly over your head.

I can't praise this film highly enough. Toro proves he has more to offer us than throw away fun, such as Blade 2 or Hellboy. This film evokes nearly all emotions, enlightens you, and is more than a little thought provoking. This has to be seen in the cinema, no questions asked.

A great british flick. I saw this on the same day as SOAP; and call me nuts, but i thought this was way better!

Think of it as a more subtle version of Shaun of The Dead, with some actual scary moments.

This has some really great writing, and some really loveable performances from the cast. The whole way through I was giggling away; while pausing, and becoming more tense during the scary scenes. Its a great mix of both horror and comedy, and at no moment does one genre ruin the film by out weighing the other.

If you are looking for some recent british cinema; with some great writing and directing, then check out Severance. Its definatly worth a watch!!

The direction of this movie is superb. It looks amazing from start to finish. It pulls off the vibe of a comic book with such accuracy and flare.

Wonderful Days (Sky Blue) (2004,  Unrated)
Wonderful Days (Sky Blue)
Sky Blue is over before it really begins, yet I get the feeling this was always it's intention. Coming in at around one hour and twenty minutes, the film brings itself to a sudden halt just as it begins to build. I was always suspecting that this movie was not going to totally deliver in the script department, and I was right. With a film like Sky Blue though, this doesn't make much of a difference.

I enjoyed Sky Blue for the visuals, and to me the film felt like a cinematic experiment, in which Korea took it upon themselves to show what they could really do with animation if they worked hard. To look at, Sky Blue is fantastic, lush visuals and a masterful mixture of media on screen makes for some dazzling effects; some of which I have never seen before in film.

As long as you enter Sky Blue with the right mindset then you'll probably enjoy each and every minute of it, if not it could be severely lacking for you. I myself entered it with caution, and was even left wanting something more. Is Sky Blue a bad film? No, it's anything but that. It simply needs the viewer to enter some what prepared, with an open mind, and appreciation for cinema on an artistic level. I highly reccomend Sky Blue to anyone with a passion for film.

The first time I saw this I laughed more than I have ever laughed with a movie (I hardly EVER laugh out loud), I was literally in tears... it hurt, in a good way. The second time I watched this and onwards it lost its effect, and the songs felt like some strange gimmick. I still rate this movie on my first viewing of it though. Spider-Man
One of the best superhero movies there is (which tells you something about this genre overall), visually is where it holds up. For me though, this is no sleeper hit. It has its moments, but it feels like they tried too hard to "develop" the characters into something more than they really are. Lots of cool action, some smirky humour, and some not so great character development. This is definatly a blockbuster movie you have to see though, you don't want to be one of the losers who missed out on spiderman.

Spirited Away (Sen to Chihiro no kamikakushi)
Miyazaki creates a simply magical world, full of stunning sights. There are many characters you instantly fall in love with, characters you could never dream of finding in a Disney movie. A story which feels as if it has been taken straight from a mental patients mind (in a good way), with a very deep and powerful message engraved. This is animation like no other, children will just be lost, while adults will be lost emotionally and mentally. This is by far one of the best movies I have ever seen, see it now.

Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones (2002,  PG)
Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones
The weakest of the prequels in my opinion.

This movie falls short due mainly to some very dull scenes, in which Star Wars decides its more than just a sci-fi franchise.

Hayden Christensen is provided with the lead role... why? He is a terrible actor, and all lines and expressions coming from him are so forced; its like wacthing a school production in which the teachers had to force children to take part, as there were no willing volunteers.

I came to watch silly action, fun characters and some cool visuals, not some political poop set in space with cringe worthy love scenes and terrible lead roles. Your just lucky this movie looks as good as it does Lucas, because I ask myself everyday why I own this one on DVD and none of the others!

Oozing with originality, and full of comedic charm, a comedy with an agreeable message.

Think what Thunderbirds action scenes would have been like if Jerry Bruckheimer were behind them; you would kind of get this movie, only this movie is actually good.

It looks fantastic, and you have to admire the way it has all been created, the characters are each very individual; and just as funny as the last, and they fit the plot perfectly; which is also supreme.

This movie jabs at just about all the big cats in America, and does so greatly. This definatly features some of Parker's and Stone's best work.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre
This movie is fantastic. Not alot of younger aged people today are going to want to see it, because its old; and there are no actors they'll instantly recognise; oh well, their loss.

This movie is ten times scarier than any horror movie out today(that probably includes the recent reamke of this; even though I've not seen it). Its the first of its kind, the characters are great, Latherface and his hillbilly brother are genuinly scary. While the teenagers seem ridiculously laid back and stupid like in most horrors, they make for great entertainment, and you'll easily find yourself shouting "NO YOU DUMB ASS, DON'T GO IN THERE!" at the screen.

Its the lack of special effects, 70's music, and use of camera that makes this movie seem "real", and not like some flashy blockbuster full of actors you know are alive in real life.

Check this movie out, and be sure to watch it alone in the dark to gain its full effect as a horror.

Some mindless action, with a pretty original plot make for a good movie.

None of the action scenes are that magical, but they do feel cool, and thats the most important aspect in a movie like this. Would you give an action movie five stars if it featured Elton John in its lead role, beating up bad guys with his piano. Yes you would... but not because you considered it cool.

This movie doesn't feel overly americanised (which makes for a nice change), has a cool vibe, has some smirky dialogue, and pretty good action. Which makes it good overall.

Versus (2001,  Unrated)
Versus
This is by far one of my favorite action movies of all time.

This movie is very lengthy coming in at over two hours, thats a very long runtime for an action flick. With 'Versus' the pace and movement of the movie is so fast and up beat, that at no moment does the runtime feel too long, if anything I was wanting more action by the end of it.

The story is pretty fun and silly, but it is portrayed in a way where the siliness is well hidden behind the "cool" vibe it gives off. All the characters are very distinct, with very different personalities; and thats what I really liked about them.

The acting is strong enough for a movie mainly about action and zombies. There is not alot of dialogue, and by no means does there need to be. You learn why these people are here and where they need to be by the end of the movie, and thats it; it leaves plenty of room for buckets of action.

The action in this movie; put simply, is intense. The fights are fast, well choreographed, include great use of camera, and are full of gore. When I say gore I don't just mean a few bloody lips here and there, I mean full on gore. We're talking about bodies being sliced in two, bodies being totally disemboweled, eyeballs being torn out, holes being blasted through bodies and heads, and all served with generous amounts of blood.

For Ryuhei Kitamura's debut movie this is really something special. While it shows it's his first, due to no special special effects (thank god), medium quality cinematography, and grainy film, it is much better than way over half the american action based blockbusters being released today. This film has action, gore, suspense, and even comedy. If your an action junkie you must see this now, and if you've never seen action as a genre you really enjoy, then this movie could change everything for you!

This one is all over the place. Don't get me wrong, the action; just like in Ong-Bak, can be simply amazing, but the film is poor in all other departments. This wants to be a really strong Hong Kong crime-thriller, but the plot, the writing, and the acting are all simply too weak. It's essentially the same film as Ong-Bak, which is fine, but they've tried too hard to elevate above it. Stick to what you know best Jaa - knees to the face!

Wayne's World (1992,  PG-13)
Wayne's World
Forget Austin Powers, this is where Mike Myers reallys shows us his comedic talent.

The movie is very similar to the Austin Powers trilogy in the form of humour, but the jokes are presented in a much slicker way; with less annoying "goofiness" too them. Sure it is very "goofy" at times; which is fine, but it does not drive you to the point of irritation.

I feel the characters are very developed and likeable too, they have quotable scences, and catch phrases sure, but just little enough too keep them from turning into one trick ponies.

The story is fresh and original too, and the concept the first of its kind; which would not be the case if it were released today.

This movie is fantastic fun, plenty reviewable, and has a fantastic sequel. Party on Wayne!

Back again. Same humour, more great cameos... but way more of an adventure. I smiled from start to finish, and so will you!

Welcome to Dongmakgol (2005,  Unrated)
Welcome to Dongmakgol
An observant movie exploring the human instinct to bond together during difficult times. Beautifully filmed, and acted with care and conviction, you are reminded of the rewarding simplicities of life, and why naivity can sometimes be a positive trait in ones personality. 'Welcome to Dongmakgol' is definatly a different kind of war film, at times revealing the possible positive sides of war. If not for this war, these characters would never have met, and become these better people because of it. 'Welcome to Dongmakgol' is beautiful, touching, reavealing, poetic, funny and charming. I highly recommend this film to everyone; whether you're a fan of Korean cinema or not.
