Batman Begins (2005, PG-13)
This is a far superior film than previous Batman installments. Director Christopher Nolan restores the franchise and explores the origins of Batman and why he became who he did. A much darker and more serious film, with one of my favourite casts for a movie. Everyone is cast perfectly, Christian Bale (who puts on a flawless American accent) is an excellent Batman. while Michael Caine, Gary Oldman, Liam Neeson, Morgan Freeman and Cillian Murphy lend great support. The only weak actor is Katie Holmes. However her acting does not detract from the overall quality of the film. The cast, the acting, the dialogue, the music and directing are all fantastic. One of my all time favourites! |

The Dark Knight (2008, PG-13)
A total masterpiece. The acting was flawless, while Heath Ledger stole the film with his incredible performance. I did not realise how great an actor he was until i saw this film. I was glued to the screen and totally forgot that it was an actor playing the Joker. The film is probably the best super hero film ever made. Yet it doesn't feel like you're watching a comic book movie. Its dark and complex, has great action scenes, yet also is intelligent. While the film lasts for almost three hours, not one minute of it was boring and it kept my attention all the way through. It was as amazing as i expected it to be and it surely lived up to all the hype. Heath Ledger certainly deserved to win the best supporting actor Oscar. Overall a fantastic film and one of the best sequels ever made in my opinion, alongside the likes of The Empire Strikes Back, Terminator 2 and Aliens. |

Million Dollar Baby (2004, PG-13)
One of the best films i have ever seen. A true story and great acting. I didn't think this was my kind of film, primarilly for its focus on boxing. But in a way thats just one part of the story. Its just a great film. The performances are excellent, which probably goes without saying considering the cast list. |

Gladiator (2000, R)
Great inspiring film. Probably Ridley Scott's best film. A great story, told well which can be watched again and again. Russell Crowe's acting is excellent along with the rest of the cast. I particulalry liked Oliver Reed, who sadly died during the making of the film. Its a shame this film didn't win best score. I think the music is fantastic and possibly Hans Zimmer's best. |

The Lord of the Rings - The Fellowship of the Ring (2001, PG-13)
This is a brilliant film. The first part of the epic film trilogy excellently directed by Peter Jackson. It was vey ambitious and daunting to adapt a book such as The Lord of the Rings to the big screen. But the result is amazing. I think every actor fits their role perfectly and is just as i imagined them in the book. Ian Mckellen's Gandalf is spot on while Christopher Lee's Saruman is better than i could have hoped for. The film boasts some impressive special effects thanks to Peter Jacksons effects company Weta Digital which shows its skill, one notable example being the mines of Moria. The music is also superb and matches well with the film. The cinematography is also great and i think is even more so in The Two Towers and The Return of the King. The choice of New Zealand for filming couldn't have been better and the incredible landscapes are put to good use to really bring the world of Middle Earth alive. |

Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace (1999, PG)
As a big Star Wars fan, i am not so blind as to ignore the faults of this film. It was impossible for it to live up to the original films, which i think is why many were disappointed. The acting is mediocre at best and the story it has to be said, isn't exactly gripping. Two major annoyances that are often pointed out are Jar Jar Binks and the young Anakin Skywalker. Yes they are annoying, especially the former. However it is still a fun and enjoyable film to watch. The podrace is a good scene and the end lightsaber battle is probably the best part of the film. Episodes II and Episodes III pick up the game a bit, but they still exist in the shadow of their superior predecessors. |

Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones (2002, PG)
The dialogue is cringe worthy at times and the acting is very poor and wooden, mainly from Hayden Christensen. Some parts are quite cheesy. |
|
| 15 |
Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith (2005, PG-13)
Probably the best of the prequels, but that isn't saying much. The dialogue is again mostly terrible. However this time around there is hardly any cringe worthy romance scenes between Anakin and Padme. Ewan McGregor's Obi-Wan Kenobi performance has greatly improved, but Hayden Christensen's acting is still pretty poor. The opening sequence of the film is very good, showing a huge space battle. The Anakin vs Obi-Wan fight is fast and spectacular and the Yoda vs Sidious fight is enjoyable and showcases ILM's wonderful CGI. The battle on Mustafar though is let down in my opinion by the overwhelming orange colour of the lava, It's just too much and the CGI becomes over the top. Ian McDiarmid is wonderful as Palpatine and Samuel L. Jackson gives a good turn as Mace Windu. Most things are tied up nicely in this film, however one major sub plot cut from the film was the formation of the Rebel Alliance, a key moment in Star Wars mythos. For such an important and pivotal moment, it seems stupid for it to have been cut. My rating for this film is very biased as i really like Star Wars, however i hope my review is more fair. |

Dances With Wolves (1990, PG-13)
A brilliant, amazing film. One of the best films i've seen. Directed by and starring Kevin Costner, the film tells the story of American Civil War veterna John Dunbar and his relationship with a Native American Sioux tribe. The cinematography, the vast landscapes and the score by John Barry are the stand outs of this film. Overall a sad and moving film which has become a classic and is a great achievement for Costner. |

X-Men (2000, PG-13)
Good and just as good as X-Men 2 and X-men 3. Stays true to the comic book feel. I think most of the characters have an equal amount of screen time, which doesn't seem to happen in X-Men 2 or X-men 3 which seems to focus more on Wolverine, which is a shame. However the film is very good and has some great acting from Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen. |

X-Men: The Last Stand (2006, PG-13)
This X-men film was great. At the start i didn't like it, but then the action started and i loved it. Some major surprises and twists in the film. Watch the end of the credits for an extra scene! I think the character of Angel was totally wasted, while having no explanation for the absence of Nightcrawler was stupid. Overall it was quite good, with Stewart and McKellen being the outstanding performers of the film. The effects of the film were quality as well. Here's hoping they make X-Men 4! |

Collateral (2004, R)
Well acted, stylish and very realistic. A great film, set as i recall entirely at night, against the backdrop of Los Angeles. This film reminded me that Tom Cruise can actually act. Slightly slow at the beginning, but slow doesn't always equal boring. Suspense is built up throughout and the film has some good action scenes. |

Tae Guk Gi: The Brotherhood of War (2004, R)
This film was great and one of the best war films i've seen. Set during the Korean War of the 1950s. It revolves around two brothers who are forced to join the South Korean army and their continuing efforts to survive. Shows how war can affect people and tear families apart. There would have been a time when i would have overlooked any film which wasn't in english or wasn't made by Hollywood. But this film, which is Korean cinemas most successful film just shows that other countries can make films just as good if not superior to Hollywood. I have read that this film has been compared to Saving Private Ryan. Although i wouldn't really compare them both, I think this film is far better. The storyline is good and the battle scenes are fantastic and seem so incredibly real and far greater than those of Saving Private Ryan. It was especially good to see a war film about something other than the Second World War. The Korean War has often been known as the Forgotten War and this film does it justice i think. A must see! |

El Laberinto del Fauno (Pan's Labyrinth) (2006, R)
This is a brilliant film and was unlike anything i'd seen before. The cinematography is wonderful and the entire story is captivating, yet haunting. The film has been called a fairy tale for adults and that is true in some sense. The film can be quite violent and graphic in places and errily scary in others. This is a great film and deserves to be seen. |

I only saw this film fairly recently, after most people had already seen it. I was surprised at how good it was and how much i enjoyed it. I enjoyed Tom Hanks' performance and i am not usually a massive fan of Tom Hanks, but i am beginning to like him as an actor more and more. The story flows perfectly and is edited perfectly along with the music. A wonderful film. The director Robert Zemeckis has also become one of my favourites. |

Transformers (2007, PG-13)
Wow this film was really good. I don't know why Michael Bay gets slagged off by so many people. He may not be perfect, but he is without doubt in my opinion the greatest director of action movies. This movie has loads of action and the CGI was incredible and was the best i've ever seen. ILM have really proven they're the best in the special effects industry with only Weta Digital being anywhere close. But it will take a lot for another film to surpass the CGI seen in Transformers. Certainly one of the best sci-fi actin movies i've ever seen. |

The Last Samurai (2003, R)
I feel this film is a bit underrated. Based loosely upon the Satsuma Rebellion of 1877, it follows an American army captain played by Tom Cruise, who haunted by his past and is disillusioned with the American military. He is hired to train the Japanese army into a modern force, so as to erradicate the Samurai. However Cruise's character instead finds respect and admiration for the Samurai and finds himself between the two sides. |

King Arthur (2004, PG-13)
This film is good for only one reason. Keira Knightley's in it. No seriously this is a good film. I had to watch it again to fully like it but now i think its great. I really like Hans Zimmer's musical score in this film as well. Overall regardless of whether or not this has any historical basis, it is still a fun film to watch and i really like it. |

Star Trek Generations (1994, PG)
The basic premise of this film was good. Uniting Picard and Kirk in a film which would effectively "pass the torch" so to speak. However in reality the film proves to be a bit of a let down. The plot really doesn't make that much sense. An energy ribbon called the nexus travels through the galaxy and some mad man wants to get back to it for some reason.....i really don't know. The whole idea of this nexus doesn't seem to have been thought out very well and it is somewhat confusing. The destruction of the Enterprise-D, while having good special effects was souless and seemed done just for the sake of it. The lighting in the film seemed darker on board the ship and it just seemed odd. Also the inconsistency with the uniforms of characters changing from scene to scene, while not a major issue, just looks poor and rather odd. The script was as Malcolm McDowell is alleged to have said "shit". The characterisation for many of the cast seemed off and not right to what was established in the tv show. If you like Star Trek: The Next Generation then its worth watching at least once. However if you are not then i wouldn't bother. |

Star Trek - First Contact (1996, PG-13)
This is a truly good Star Trek film and can be watched by pretty much anyone. You don't have to like or know Star Trek. Good acting, lots of action and great special effects which serve a purpose and aren't just there to look good. The script is pretty good and a lot better than the previous film "Generations". The musical score is also great as well. Patrick Stewert is especially good, as is Alice Krige as the Borg Queen. Great Stuff! |
|
| 64 |
Star Trek - Nemesis (2002, PG-13)
This Star Trek film has some great action scenes as well as a great opening sequence. However there are many plot holes in this film which ultimatley let it down. Although i could go into great detail about these plot holes i won't bother as those who are fans of Star Trek the Next Generation won't need them spelling out for them. However it was sad that this was the last film, with the Next Generation cast. It didn't seem a very fitting end to their adventures and being a big fan and having watched the television series since i was younger i was very disappointed. The director Stuart Baird should take the blame for the poorness of this film. He had never even watched an episode of Star Trek and later claimed it was "silly" yet somehow he was still chosen to direct the film. A much better choice would have been Jonathan Frakes who had proven himself with the direction of Star Trek: First Contact and Star Trek: Insurrection. The film is virtually a rip off of superior Star Trek films, The Wrath of Khan and The Undiscovered Country. There were also some important deleted scenes which were not included which could have helped improve the film and wrap up the stories of certain characters and make it seem like it really was TNG's final outing. These included such things as the character of Doctor Crusher leaving the Enterprise to take command of Starfleet Medical. Sadly however many of these scenes were ommited from the film. Instead we are left with a film which has a rather bizzare plot, which really doesn't make much sense and which throws away many of the established plots and trademarks built up during TNG's television series. There are a couple of scenes in the film which are still enjoyable such as the action sequences and great special effects If you like the Star Trek films then its worth seeing at least once. However as the last film with the Next Generation, it is a big let down and i am not surprised that many of the cast such as Patrick Stewart, LeVar Burton and Marina Sirtis have criticised this film. |

Mission Impossible (1996, PG-13)
This is more of an intelligent action/thriller without any major shoot outs. I have to admit about an hour into the film and didn't really have any idea what was going on. However the film keeps your attention and the scene in CIA headquaters has now become a classic. I prerfer Mission Impossible 3 personally, but this is still fairly good. Just avoid Mission Impossible 2. |

Mission: Impossible III (2006, PG-13)
"Who are you? What's you're name? Do you have a wife? A girlfriend? Because if you do, I'm gonna find her. I'm gonna hurt her. I'm gonna make her bleed, and cry, and call out your name. And then I'm gonna find you,and kill you right in front of her." |

The Majestic (2001, PG)
Befoe seeing this film my opinion of Jim Carrey was very low. I thought he couldn't act and he only did stupid wacky films like Ace Ventura etc. Well after seeing this film i have changed my opinion. Carrey proves he can act in this film, which is wonderfully directed by Frank Darabont. The story is good and the entire film just had a likeability about it which i didn't expect. All in all a very good film and worth seeing. |

Alien (1979, R)
One of the greatest sci-fi films ever made. A combination of sci-fi horror this film is excellent. Brilliantly directed by Ridley Scott with excellent special effects and make up even for today. Has one of the most famous scenes in cinema history and the film works so well on a scary level by never actualy shoing the audience a clear full shot of the alien. Great stuff, along with its just as good sequel. |
|
| 77 |
Aliens (1986, R)
Possibly one of the greatest film sequels of all time, alongside the likes of Terminator 2 (also a James Cameron film), and The Empire Strikes back. The effects are great even today, specifically the aliens, who look disgusting and creepy. More action than the first Alien film, this still builds up suspense well and has a fantastic ending. The score to the film is also very good and well recognised, as part of it has often been used in trailers. James Horner did a good job especially as he basically composed the score overnight. By most accounts James Cameron is a difficult director to work with and is something of a perfectionist. He knows what he wants and he usually gets it and produces outstanding films. |

Really enjoyed this film. Wonderfully eccentric and strange, yet captivating and emotive. The cast were excellent. Kudos to Carrey and Winslet whose acting was brilliant. Pirates of the Caribbean: At Worlds End (2007, PG-13)
Overall i don't think this film lived up to expectations. I still don't think the two sequels are as good as the first. I thought the film was too long and the plot was too fast paced for me to keep focused on what the hell was going on most of the time. Also all the other pirates from around the world, were totally wasted. Where were they in the supposedly "big" battle at the end. It only involved three ships. They didn't even take part. When i actually did realise what was going on in the film, i thought it was quite predictable. However there were some very funny moments, which were cool. |

The Bourne Identity (2002, PG-13)
Very good, although i think a little overated. A man is pulled from the sea with two bullet holes in his back with no memory of who he is or where he came from. However he is skilled in hand to hand combat and the use of weapons, while a saftey deposit box in a bank in Switzerland reveals several passports, a large amount of cash and a gun. Very soon however, he finds himself being pursued by U.S government agents who wish to kill him. This is a very good action thriller with realistic action and car chases. Matt Damon's acting is pretty good and the direction is solid also. I don't think this film deserved a sequel, let alone two. |
|
| 101 |
The Bourne Supremacy (2004, PG-13)
A pretty pointless sequel. The storyline was almost the same as the first film, with a slight variation. Basically running around different cities, wondering who he is, not being able to remember things. Mysterious CIA operatives and assassins and car chases. Brian Cox was particularly good. Apart from that the Bourne Identity is still the best. |
|
| 102 |
The Bourne Ultimatum (2007, PG-13)
A well made, well acted and directed film. It was very good throughout and wrapped up the Bourne Trilogy quite well. However i didn't think it was that much different from the Bourne Supremacy, although this was slightly better in some respects. Overall i'd say the Bourne Identity is the better of the three, but this is one trilogy where all the films are generally good. Probably the best "threequal" i saw of the summer. |

Live Free or Die Hard (2007, PG-13)
I was a little disappointed with this film. I think this is a case where the trailer actually is better than the film. I expected John McClane to be back with a bang, but it seemed to be short of the mark. The fact that the rating for the movie was watered down, compared to previous installments is, in my opinion a disgrace and shows the state of the Hollywood movie industry today. The plot of the film was flaky to say the least, Timothy Olyphant i felt was terribly miscast as the villain. His acting was poor and he was neither menacing or threatening as a villian should be. He is probably one of the least villanous villians i have ever seen in a movie. Maggie Q's character was, same as Timothy Olyphant's, two dimensional, with little explanation as to who she was and why she was aiding Timothy Olyphant's character. Justin Long was the typical sterotypical whinging kid, although there were a few choice moments of dialogue between him and Willis which lent the film some humour. The stunts where impressive, if somewhat unbelieveable. The scene with the Jet fighter has to be the most stupid and unbelievable scene i have ever seen in a movie. What were they thinking? I was certainly not a fan of the director Len Wiseman, especailly after seeing the Underworld films, which i thought were poor. As sheer action and entertainment this film is certainly worth a watch, but make sure you can suspend your disbelief. |

On first impressions, the plot of this film could seem a bit silly. However i think the plot holds up well with Denzel Washington putting in a good performance. Dirceted by Tony Scott, who worked with Denzel on Man on Fire. Although i am beginning to like Tony Scott as a director, i sometimes dislike his shooting style. However overall he is a solid director who has brought out some good entertaining films and this is another one. The film makes you think and overall is pretty good. One i would recommend. |

Bad Boys (1995, R) |

Bad Boys II (2003, R)
Director Michael Bay is the master of car chases and pulls off a spectacular one in this film. It was probably one of the best chase scenes i have seen in a film. Although the chase scene in The Island was also very good. Will Smith and Martin Lawrance work well together, the action is true to Michael Bay films, with huge explosions, exciting car chases and hectic gun battles. This film is pretty much a ridiculous no brainer action movie, but for what it is its quite good. Although personally i prefer the first Bad Boys film. |

Planet of the Apes (1968, PG)
This film was pretty good and it has stood the test of time well. In the beginningit is creepy and suspensefull. The story is great and i think this film is much better than the remake, which i actually saw first. The make up effects for the apes are great as well and don't look cheesy or fake, they just look real. Overall a very good film. |

I really like this film and think its probably M. Night Shyamalan's best film. I became dissapointed with this director after i watched the village, but i still think this film is great. I like UFOS and aliens and stuff so it kind of appeals to me. However you don't have to be into that stuff to watch this film. Mel Gibson is great in it. The part at the Brazillian boys birthday party sh**s me up big time lol! |

The Rock (1996, R)
A good action movie and with a great cast Sean Connery, Nicolas Cage, this is a movie which has to be seen. Good all round entertainment, although it has a couple of cheesy scenes. The marines dialogue in the film pretty much consisted of yes sir, no sir, three bags full sir and after a bit it became slightly annoying. |

Saving Private Ryan (1998, R)
A good war film portraying American troops landing on Omaha beach on D-Day during World War II. Although an epic and moving film, i think their is far too much focus upon the Americans and gives no acknowledgement to the British or other nationalities which took part in D-Day. I am tempted to say its a load of patriotic American drivel, but i won't go that far. |

The Simpsons Movie (2007, PG-13)
After watching the Simpsons for as long as i can remember i have to say that the movie was pretty good. It was pretty funny, although i thought their were a couple of cheesy parts. The only downside was that some characters got none or hardly any lines at all. Although it would be hard to get every character to say a line. Principal Skinner didn't have a line...but ahhh well. All in all this was very good. |

The Jacket (2005, R)
This film is in no way perfect, but i still liked it enough to give it 4 stars. I like Adrien Brody and Keira Knightley although they didn't seem to have much chemistry on screen together. The story is interesting if a little bizzare and hard to follow at times. There are a few unanswered questions but it kind of leaves the film open to interpretation. Still there are some good parts and overall its not a bad film. |

The Untouchables (1987, R)
I am giving this film 4 stars because i like the actors in it and their performances were actually very good. It was a fairly good film. I disliked the music. It seemed silly and out of place and there were a few scenes in the film which were quite cheesy. I don't know whether it was intentional or not but it didn't seem to work....the train station scene for example. After watching this film a second time i like a little more. It has a likeable quality about it and some classic lines. |

I heard a lot of bad reviews about this film, but i don't think it was that bad. The thing i like about this film was the message that it contained about terrorists and the world we live in today. Although i didn't think Nicole Kidman and Daniel Craig were that great together, the film was still watchable. |

Star Trek - Insurrection (1998, PG)
Although this film has been criticised as being like an extended tv episode, i thought it was quite good and it held my attention. Although the plot could have been thought out a bit more, i felt it was fun and had humour and action. As usual the characters of Geordi, Crusher, Troi and to a certain extent Riker and Worf are pushed to the sidelines with little to do. However Data and Picard get a lot, in fact one might say, too much screen time. Tthere were a few silly scenes and some scenes which i felt were unnecessary and at times the dialogue showed how lazy the script writers had been. Worf's inclusion in the film was glossed over and never really explained properly, as he was meant to be on Deep Space Nine, during the continuity of this film. However minor gripes aside i liked this film a lot more after not having seen it for quite a few years. |

This was really crazy but pretty good at the same time. Its obviously not meant to be taken seriously and is just a bit of fun. Saying that however quite a few people die horrible deaths, yet i still found myself laughing at them. I think you either love or hate this film. Sameul L Jackson was really cool as well. |

The Patriot (2000, R)
I was going to give this 4 stars but changed my mind. This film could very well have been brilliant, but it is let down by the historial inaccuray and the portrayal of the British. The British are shown to be vicious, uncaring and Nazi like. There are many times in the film where you could exchange a redcoat for an SS uniform and you wouldn't notice the difference between the two. The worst scene in the film was the *SPOILERS* burning of the villagers in the church, which was an almost exact copy of a real life attorcity carried out by the Nazis in Oradour in France in the Second World War. It seems that Roland Emmerich who is German, somehow wanted to associate such crimes with the British for some reason. It was bad enough Mel Gibson doing Braveheart without starring in this film as well. |

Seraphim Falls (2007, R)
Not quite what i expected it to be, so until i see it a second time it gets a 3 1/2 star rating. Casting Pierce Brosnan and Liam Neeson, two Irish actors, as the main leads in this western seems a bit odd, but i don't think it was too bad. Their acting was fairly good for the most part. I think the story could have been a little stronger, it seemed weak. For quite a lot of the film i was left wondering why exactly Liam Neeson's character was pursuing Pierce Brosnan. When it was finally revealed, it wasn't as interesting as i'd hoped. The landscapes in the fiml are excellent, from the begginings snowy pine forests all the way to the barren sandy desert. The film is quite slow and kind of meanders along and isn't all guns blazing cow boy action. Overall though the film was fairly enjoyable and i've seen much worse. Just don't expect any 3:10 to Yuma. |

Braveheart (1995, R)
Good directing and wonderful landscapes as well as very good battle scenes. However its inaccurate, biased and highly exaggerated, to depict the English as barbarians. Much the same as what Mel Gibson did in the Patriot. I think Mel Gibson must have something against the English. This film would have been so good if wasn't for the inaccuracies and sheer Hollywood depiction of it all. About the only accurate thing about it is that there was a Scottish man called William Wallace. Probably one of my favourite fantasy films. |

The Hitcher (2007, R)
Not a bad film. Sean Bean's performance was great i thought. The music really ruined the film though and in parts made it seem like a really bad music video. However apart from that minor complaint, which applies to one particular scene, it was a rather good film, if predictable in parts. Just don't expect anything mind blowingly brilliant. |

Enemy at the Gates (2001, R)
This film was fairly weak in the first half i thought, but in the second half the drama and tension really starts to pick up. Rachel Weiz was great, however i didn't like Jude Law at all, i thought he was a pretty bad choice for the role and his acting wasn't that good, not to mention his accent. The accents of the characters was a major let down for this film, i think they could have at least attempted to put on a Russian accent like Bob Hoskins did in the film. Ed Harris was great and i thought he was the perfect choice to play the German Sniper. Overall once you've got used to the actors not using a Russian accent, this is a fairly good film, if you ignore some bad points and some of the historical inaccuracies. |
