My Favorite Comedies

  1. kenmicklash
  2. Karissa

These are the movies I could (and do) watch over and over again, and I would laugh just as hard each and every time as the first time I saw them.

Excepting the first four or so, they're not in any particular order.

Monkey Business 5.0 Stars
The craziest film the Marx Brothers ever made. Some prefer their political spoof, Duck Soup (I'd rank it just behind this one.) but I love Monkey Business for its sheer inspired lunacy. It's pure insanity from start to finish.

This has always been my favorite Mel Brooks film. The concept is one of the funniest ever put on film, and Gene Wilder and Zero Mostel work so well together. A classic!

Very reminiscent of Monty Python in its comedy style, and even though two Monty Python members have starring roles, it's Kevin Kline who ultimately makes the film. He plays his character completely over the top and the result is just ungodly funny. Check it out ASAP.

I used to watch this all the time at my grandparents' house when I was little, and I still love it today. Laurel and Hardy are one of the all-time greatest comedic duos.

Some Like It Hot (1959,  Unrated)
Some Like It Hot 5.0 Stars
This movie is hysterical from start to finish. The story centers around two male band members who, in order to avoid being rubbed out by the mob, disguise themselves as women and join an all-female band on its way to Florida. Jack Lemmon gives one of the most hilarious performances in a film ever, and even Marilyn Monroe (Who I usually get annoyed with very quickly.) is a joy to watch.

The Great Dictator (1940,  G)
The Great Dictator 4.5 Stars
Spoofing Adolf Hitler while World War II was still on-going couldn't have been an easy feat, but Chaplin pulled it off with razor-sharp wit and elegance. He was such a fantastic comedic actor, I think it sometimes goes unnoticed what a brilliant filmmaker he really was. The Great Dictator is both hilarious and heartfelt -- with intelligence to boot (something seemingly absent in most other satires). It feels decades ahead of its time. Wonderful film. A true masterpiece.

Fun-time fact #1: Hitler modeled his moustache after that of Chaplin, thinking it would make him more endearing to the public.

Fun-time fact #2: Although The Great Dictator was banned in Germany during World War II, Hitler himself viewed it not once, but on two separate occasions. Chaplin later said he would have given anything to know what Hitler had thought of it.
