Brokeback Mountain (2005,  R)
Brokeback Mountain
The scenery is amazing. You really feel for both characters. You're a witness to how societal 'norms' come between and eventually tear them apart. Sad, beautiful and very moving. Can't believe Heath is gone.
2
JFK (1991,  R)
JFK
WOW! Conspiracy theory or not...this is one enlightning movie.
3
The Color Purple (1985,  PG-13)
The Color Purple
Really unbelievable that this movie was nominated for 11 Oscars and came away with nothing. Absolute disgrace. 'The Color Purple' infuses me with hope. Oprah, Whoopi and Danny nail their performances.
4
The Celluloid Closet (1996,  R)
The Celluloid Closet
If youre at all interested in GLBT history you need to watch this. Fascinating.
5
Saved! (2004,  PG-13)
Saved!
I went to school with a lot of these characters....VERY real!
6
The Laramie Project (2002,  R)
The Laramie Project
One of several movie made about the brutal death of Matthew Shepard. This movie is a collection of interviews from actual residents of Laramie. Amazing cast. Intense. Moving. A must see.

On a side note, it's been ten years since Matthew's brutal death and we still do not have a Federal Hate Crimes law. One wonders how many other Matthews there have already been and how many more there will be before the Government starts to look seriously at a Hate Crimes law.

Dangerous Living - Coming Out in the Developing World (2003,  Unrated)
Dangerous Living - Coming Out in the Developing World
Certainly here in the United States the fight for full equality is not over but I ask you all to pause just for a minute and be grateful that even though we ARE discriminated against we also are treated better than most GLBT's in the world.
8
Philadelphia (1993,  PG-13)
Philadelphia
Interestingly enough one of the reasons Johnathan Demme made this was because he was being labeled a homphobe(his previous film was The Silence Of The Lamb's' where of course the villian is a pre opperative trans sexual).I don't think Demme is at all homophobic. The script was not written by Demme and all he did was direct a film that was being adapted from the novel. Having said all that he really knocked 'Philadelphia' out of the ball park! To me it was the first really serious movie to discuss AIDS and the discrimination it brings. Hanks' character is a successful lawyer, on the fast track at his firm until they discover his illness. They then set about to sabotage him which leads to his firing. Knowing this is bogus he hires the only lawyer, Denzel Washington, who will take his case. It's an intense movie and for it's day it was groud breaking. Hanks deserves a lot of credit for taking this. And Demme deserves credit for putting a human face on this terrible virus. No matter how many times I watch this and no matter how hard I try, I can't help but cry.
9
Soldier's Girl (2003,  R)
Soldier's Girl
'Soldiers Girl' chronicles the savage killing of Barry Winchell. It's certainly difficult to watch but nonetheless a movie everyone should see. Troy Garity and Lee Pace play their parts beautifully. Just my opinion but the military needs to get rid of DADT and start educating it's soldiers so we have no more Mr. Winchell's.
10
Shelter (2007,  R)
Shelter
One of the better gay movies. Nobody dies lol. Sweet little love story.
11
The Line of Beauty (2006,  Unrated)
The Line of Beauty
Exposes the hypocracy of the Tory party in the 1980's. Hated how it ended but certainly worth watching.
12
Kinsey (2004,  R)
Kinsey
Liam Neesom does a fantastic job as Alfred Kinsey who through reserach got us to se and experience sexualty in a better way.
13
Bad Education (La Mala educación) (2004,  NC-17)
Bad Education (La Mala educación)
It's a Pedro Almodovar film! Nothing else to say except to enjoy it.
14
And the Band Played On (1993,  PG-13)
And the Band Played On
Fascinating look at the very beginning of the AIDS epidemic. Had this horrific disease been offing nuns and small children you can bet your bottom dollar Reagan would have stepped in and done something. Since however gay men were dying in droves from HIV and AIDS, Reagan was silent. In fact Reagan didn't even mention the word AIDS until 25,000 Americans had passed away. Disgraceful!
15
Fried Green Tomatoes (1991,  PG-13)
Fried Green Tomatoes
I never get tired of watching this. Everyone does such a great job. Enjoy watching Kathy Bates' character change from frumpy door matt to a confident woman who stands up for herself thanks to Jessica Tandy's story telling. One part of this movie always annoyos me . Mary Louise and Mary Stewarts's characters are in love with each oher and the movie just side steps it. I guess the producers were afraid of what telling the truth about these characters would do to them at the box office. Personally I think it would have enhanced the movie but we'll never know.
16
The ACLU Freedom Files (,  Unrated)
The ACLU Freedom Files
I encourage everyone to watch this.
17
Small Town Gay Bar (2007,  Unrated)
Small Town Gay Bar
We in the USA like to think were a 'live and let live' society. This proves were not. The hysteria, ignorance and hate that festers in a small town(due in no small part to 'men of god' aka small minded religious bigots)leaves the LGBT community always on the defensive. Ten years after Matthew Shephards death still no closer to a much needed Federal Hate Crimes Bill. What is the government waiting for?
18
Urbania (2000,  R)
Urbania
Heart wrenching and hauntingly beautiful, Dan Futterman in a sense lives in an alternate reality trying to cope with what has transpired.
19
Relax ... It's Just Sex (1999,  R)
Relax ... It's Just Sex
I laughed and cried. Fun movie.
20
Say Uncle (2006,  Unrated)
Say Uncle
Good movie about stereotypes, ignorance and paranoia.
21
Hellbent (2005,  R)
Hellbent
A horror movie targetted towards the LGBT community? Yes please!
22
Trembling Before G-d (2001,  Unrated)
Trembling Before G-d
Organized religion causes too much pain.
23
Strange Bedfellows (2004,  R)
Strange Bedfellows
Very funny film. The American version of course is the 'Chuck and Larry' movie which isn't half as funny.
24
Prom Queen (2005,  Unrated)
Prom Queen
Based on a true story in Canada. The movie is quite a bit of fun but if you ever get to watch the documentary on this important court case I would. I LOVE that Marc's parents are so supportive of him. I wish all parents could be that way.
25
In the Gloaming (1997,  PG)
In the Gloaming
Christopher Reeve's directorial debut after his riding accident. Touching movie of a son thats come home to die amidst a sister hell bent on making sure her son doesn't 'become' gay, a father not willing to make a real connection with his gay son and a mother who tries to take in every moment before he passes away. Whoopi Goldberg plays the nurse. As always her performance is touching and solid. Sad, beautiful movie that gets you to pick up the phone and talk to everyone you take for granted in your life.
26
An Early Frost (1985,  Unrated)
An Early Frost
The first movie to deal with the HIV/AIDS crisis. It needed to be made to dispel the myths of this awful virus. I commend everyone that worked on that film. A movie made about AIDS in 1985 could have meant the end of their careers but they felt the movie's message was more important. Good for them!
27
Chuck & Buck (2000,  R)
Chuck & Buck
So on the surface Buck might seem like a stalker but when you get deeper into it you realize he's just trying to make sense of the world he's in.
28
The Trip (2003,  R)
The Trip
Get your Kleenex ready!
29
The Deep End (2001,  R)
The Deep End
Tilda Swinton does whatever it takes to protect her gay son after he accidently kills his boyfriend. A good thriller.
30
Jeffrey (1995,  R)
Jeffrey
Not just a movie about the AIDS crisis but also how people dealt with it . Funny, sad, touching and worth watching.
31
Boys on the Side (1995,  R)
Boys on the Side
It made me laugh and cry.
32
Trick (1999,  R)
Trick
One of the better gay movies. Tori Spelling of all actresses is hysterical in this. Everyone else does a great job. JP Pitoc is insanely cute.
33
The Broken Hearts Club (2000,  R)
The Broken Hearts Club
I liked how this gave you a look a different types of gay men from just coming out and having a massive crush(who hasn't been there?), to the total player who finally gets played. Despite the review it IS a romantic film. It may not be the romance youre used to but none the less it is romance.
34
All Over The Guy (2001,  R)
All Over The Guy
Not your typical gay romance. I liked that the film showed a gay man with flaws. It seems to me at least that gay men in movies ALWAYS have their lives together and are utterly fabulous. I would say the majority aren't like that. Nice to see gay man protrayed as a human being for once.
35
The Times of Harvey Milk (1984,  Unrated)
The Times of Harvey Milk
Very moving and informative. I wonder what Harvey could have achieved had he lived.
36
Milk (2008,  R)
Milk
I watched this with a bunch of strangers in a dankened theater. I would say the majority of those people were straight. At the end of the movie spontaneous applause broke out. I was amazed but such is how 'Milk' can and has touched people, regardless of orientation. The day when we have true and complete equality on the Federal level is coming, but not soon enough.
