The Haunting (1999,  PG-13)
The Haunting
Typical?Yes, done a million times? No. The Haunting is a completely original and frightening horror film. probably one of the best I've seen. The Haunting stars Liam Neeson as Dr. David Marrow a psychiatrist who specializes in sleep disorders, Dr. Marrow invites three participants to old hill house, a gorgeous and gigantic mansion built some odd 100 years ago by Hugh Crain an industrial revolution textile tycoon, he built the house in hopes of filling it up with a large family, but all of Crain's children died during birth. Shortly after Crain's first wife killed herself before the house was finished. This caused Crain to become a recluse. As Marrow is telling the story a bizarre accident causes his research assistant to leave the mansion early, leaving Marrow with the three patients. Wild Theo(Zeta-Jones), "Bad Sleeper" Luke Sanderson(Owen Wilson), and Insomniac Eleanor "Nell" Vance. After the accident and his assistants leave of absences, strange things start to happen in the old mansion, and Nell is at the center of it. one night while Nell is sleeping she starts to hear voices call her, but nobody is there. The next night the same thing except this time she starts seeing things as well, the next morning she tries to tell Marrow that there is something wrong with this house and that they need to leave. Marrow informs her that they can't leave until the week is up. Soon enough one strange event after another starts to happen to all of them, Nell tries to uncover what is going on, And she soon finds out that the house is haunted by the owner Hugh Crain. With that said The Haunting explodes into a non-stop chill ride as you and Nell try to uncover the truth behind the haunting of hill house.

Constantine (2005,  R)
Constantine
Constantine is not your usual supernatural thriller, no Constantine breaks all the rules that the genre has put in stone, it breaks down the wall and builds a new one based on it's own mythology. And may I say that it does a n amazing job at that.

This film is not something I usually watch, in fact I was very skeptical when I deiced to view just to see if it was any good, boy was I surprised! Constantine was amazing!! This film blew my hair back and took my breathe away. This film is bathed in dark but equally bright tones, it mashes them together so well to blend in with the films story That the filmmakers make it look like something whole different form our world. The theme of the movie is not what I'd call religious or spiritually at all but it works. And that's why the film works, this film works on a whole different level than most comic book adaptions and even most supernatural thrillers it put's it case and makes a statement most films don't have the balls to do and they do it with such style and grace that this film just blows away the competition and makes other supernatural thrillers look like seaseme street, and I mus say that's hard to do. Seeing as most films in this genre crash and burn this one takes off to new heights and makes you see what you've never seen before.

Keanu Reeves( who in my opinion is an awesome actor.) turns in one of his best and most powerful performances of his career as a man who been to the ends of life and back. And Keanu does it with such style and grace that John Constantine is someone that you just can't hate. This film is not as you expect it too be, when you pop in this film you expect it to be your usual supernatural thriller, but you get so much more. You get a trip into a world that nobodies ever seen before and you come our saying "Hey that was actually pretty cool." And then you know that you've gotten what your money's paid for.

This film is near-perfect and if your very forgiving Constantine delivers awesome entertainment on a whole new scale.

House On Haunted Hill (1959,  Unrated)

Underworld (2003,  R)
Underworld
Underworld put's a whole new spin on the vampire/Lycan story line and takes us to a world the likes we've never seen before. Underworld stars Kate Beckinsale as Selene, a beautiful and ruthless vampire assassin(Know as death dealer's)) she has hated the Lycans for as long as she has lived, know Selene and the other death dealers have hunted the lycans to the brink of extinction. Or so they believe. Underworld is a sleek and stylish horror thriller that is sure to captivate and amaze, it doesn't matter how many times you seen it. Kate Beckinsale does an amazing job in the movie you can't stop watching. Underworld blends a sort of Gothic, graphic novel feel to it. It's like the film "Sin City", except a little less sinful. This film uses a style that didn't become overly popular until such movies as "Sin City" or "The Dark Knight" but stands on it's own two feet with the dark and mysterious theme to it. Very few horror films can ever follow this style; or even live up to the style of this film, because it's so unique and different that you can't do anything but love it even those who say they hated it secretly own a copy of this film and don;t want anyone to know. That's what it is, it's a film that you don't tell anyone you've seen and if you have you say you hate it when you secretly love it. This is a guilty pleasure film, and a excellent one at that. Underworld may be forgot in 20 year or so, but those who went to see it and bothered to buy it will always remember it for what it was.

Boogeyman (2005,  PG-13)
Boogeyman
This movie is something of an underrated film in the horror genre, it was actually much, much, much better than I thought. You see I don't usually watch PG-13 horror due to the fact that it is usually is bland , cheesy, contrived, over rated and over hyped. This film was none of those, Boogeyman, or as I like to call it The Boogeyman is a very suspenseful, dark and foreboding Psychological horror thriller.

This film was very good for five of reasons. 1) It didn't use an abundant of CGI or gore to tell it' story. 2) it thought out it's story and characters reasonable well. 3). 4) it use old school techniques(which I love more than the new way of horror story telling .) and it uses it so well to bring out the very dark and scary nature of the legend of the monstrous Boogeyman. 5) It pulls no punches when it comes to telling horror, it get's in your head and just won't leave even after the film is over.

Boogeyman wasn't Halloween(1978) or Dracula(1931) scary, but it was scary none the less. It's style and means of scaring you were conventional and old school and that was something that shocked me. You don't see that in a modern horror film. And that makes this film a stand out among them; I mean I've seen Rob Zombie's Halloween( I call it suckloween), I've seen Turistas( I call it dumbristas) but this is the first film since Secret Window that I'm proud to call a good horror movie.

Barry Watson( You may know him as Jessica Beil's boyfriend on 7th Heaven.) plays a distraught and disturbed young man who has to come to terms with the childhood fear that has afflicted him all his life.He plays this part relatively well and does good in what he is suppose to do. Emily Deschanel was alright, she wasn't horrible but she wasn't good either. She kind of lags in the the emotional depth department and made her kind of a drag to watch. But besides that they both hold up nicely in this.

Boogeyman is not an oscar worthy film but what it is is a great scare machine that doesn't quit from the opening scene until the closing, and it delivers an effected psychological look into the paranoiac fear that most people have of The Bogeyman and the dark. All in all Boogeyman wasn't a bad film and if your kind you will see it as well. It isn't a gore machine like you would expect, or like but it is a very effective movie in it's own right. Boogeyman gives you one wild and nightmarish ride for your money and I can promise you. You won't be disappointed with the outcome. All in all Boogeyman is one door you do want to open.

Secret Window (2004,  PG-13)
Secret Window
I've seen psychological thriller's that try to scare you more than melt your brain, this one I'm proud to say does both. It's a very, very malicious and haunting thrill machine. I t brings the very essence of how horror and Psycho thriller's are suppose to be done, not with over the top gore and CGi, but with old school conventional means.

Secret Window is as sinister as it is smart it rolls along at a very steady pace and brings more to the table than what was required. It shows you what the decent into madness and utter chaos looks like, it shows you the depth and moral ambiguities of a torn man who's lost everything. With that said you can examine the physic of the mind as it cracks under extreme and constant pressure and how your choices do affect who you help, or who you hurt. This film's pace and dark style is meant to reflect horror films of the 40's, 50's, 60's and early 70's before gore became cool but that makes this film such a joy to watch and study. And that makes it a great film, not a good film, a great film.

Johnny Depp( who was fantastic here.) gives a very eccentric and brilliant performance as the conflicted writer Mort Rainey, John Turturro does exceptionally well as the sinister and vicious Shooter and he almost outclasses Depp in this film. Charles S. Dutton does well with the few scenes he's. But the main let down and I think the reason for this film's poor reviews from critics were the bland and very lame performances of Timothy Hutton( he won an oscar he can do better than this.) and Maria Bello, they really lowered the caliber and class of this film and forced Depp to try harder to make them look good and make there time on screen with him good, but he succeeds and they fail. But Turturro and Depp hold up strong.

Secret Window is a very Keene and captivating psychological/horror thriller that is surefire mind boggling entertainment and out of this world fun. This movie is great rainy day entertainment or any day entertainment for that matter it's just all around a fantastic and mind boggling film that makes you question the sanity of writers and the world they live in ( speaking as one myself.) it brings to question as the thoughts in our mind really our conscious or our selves just speaking out to to right the wrongs doe against us It's a film that ask those questions and then you have to answer. All in all Secret Window is a sinister, malicious and thought provoking film that delivers a movie going experience like no other.

When a Stranger Calls (2006,  PG-13)

In the Mouth of Madness (1995,  R)
In the Mouth of Madness
As an aspiring author seeing this film was something magical and at the same time extremely disturbing. In the Mouth of Madness is not your typical horror, it may look like that from the trailer but let me tell you first hand that this film, as the title suggest, is pure and unflinching madness.

In the Mouth of Madness has to be one of the most effective and well thought out horror pictures of the 90's maybe even today. It draws it's brilliance and dark theme straight from the minds of John Carpenter and Stephen King. It's morbid, dark, ingenious and oh so spooky. It's a film that resonates with the earlier works of John"Spooky" Carpenter and without him this film would have failed miserably to really induce any real madness or scares. It's a brilliant and severely underrated film that if you watch it It will driver you mad.

San Neill(Who does good here.) has some charm and great skill to be in horror as in half the movie once he get's to Hobbs End he is almost always petrified with fear at the horrific things he seems. It's quite amazing to watch and see how your fear can mount and grow into your worst paranoiac nightmare when you least expect it. But none the less the cast does great in this dark psychological horror film.

This film is to me what Titanic is to romance fans. It's a horror gem the likes you have never really quite seen it's the type of film that will haunt your dreams and it will bleed into your reality making everything around you into something horrifying. it's a great film to see, but I have just one request if you do, be careful because if your not I can promise you this film will drive you absolutely mad.

The Thing (1982,  R)
The Thing
I'm at that stage in my movie watching days where horror films have no affect on me anymore. I've seen them all: Halloween(1978), Rob Zombie's Halloween, Friday the 13th(1980), Friday the 13th(2009). It just seems that horror doesn't scare me any more like it use to, at least that's what I thought until I saw John Carpenter's "The Thing".

The Thing is not like most Sci-Fi horror, most Sc-Fi horror films use eerie space ships and extreme violence to tell the story. Seeing as most directors think that that is exactly what film goers want. Well I'm here to tell you that isn't the case, John Carpenter doesn't use over abundance of CGI and gore to tell his story no, Carpenter use the basic necessitates to tell his story of horror. And with this he creates the building block for all Science Fiction horror that has followed. The Thing is s something of immense and unparalleled horror the likes you've never seen before. Kurt Russell(Who did great here.) Is awesome as the anti- hero he put's a great spin on the style of the story and brings some real true scenes of do or die. But all in all the cast does great in this bone chilling and paranoiac Sci-Fi horror film.

The Thing is a true masterpiece in the genre of horror It's a film that really stands out as one of the best and darkest of the bunch. John Carpenter has crafted a masterstroke and literally almost invented Sci-Fi horror and thanks to him we have one of the first ever truly shocking entries. The Thing is a brilliance, dark, horrific, grotesque and paranoiac horror film like no other. All in all it delivers.

El Laberinto del Fauno (Pan's Labyrinth) (2006,  R)
El Laberinto del Fauno (Pan's Labyrinth)
Alice in Wonderland is one of the most beloved stories of our time, It tells of a young girl who falls down a rabbit hole and get's transported to another world where strange creatures rule and the possibilities of magic and adventure are endless. But it's been nearly 144 years since that story first appeared and ever since then film makers have been trying to tell the story a different way for years, But thanks to Guillermo del Toro we have the greatest spin off of all, El Laberinto del Fauno, or in English, Pan's Labyrinth.

Guillermo del Toro has crafted a Fantasy adventure the likes no one has ever seen before, and I know that I've said that before but this film breaks some amazing new grounds in special effects and makeup. It's just a film that you have to seen to really, truly believe because if you love Fantasy and dark, deeply emotional films than this is your ticket. While this film is brilliant in every way imaginable it does have it's downside, The film is very creepy and violent and not suited for children and may leave them with nightmares of the grotesque creatures that are shown in this film. But none the less Pan's Labyrinth is a dark and beautiful film It's one of the most exhilarating movie experiences you will ever have and it's a film you will not forget.

The Spanish cast of actors do amazing in this and give this film it's true power and worth, they bring a humanized side to an overall Fantasy movie and bring the stark reality of love, death, cruelty, sorrow and happiness to this film. All in all there fantastic in this film.

Pan's Labyrinth is brilliant, dark, engaging, relentlessly entertaining, heart breaking, horrifying and beautiful. It's a film with so much heart and so much loss and amazing fantasy adventure that when the movie starts your sucked into a world where your greatest fantasies live. And where your greatest nightmare's can lie as well It's a bold , new ground of film making that will enchant and blow your mind. All in all Pan's Labyrinth is one adventure you do want to take.

Sleepy Hollow (1999,  R)

1408 (2007,  PG-13)
1408
Horror like action films and romantic Comedies has fallen prey to the disease that is formula. There hasn't been a full blown, original horror film in a long time. But now I have faith the genre can be saved thanks to a film called, 1408.

1408 is a notch above the regular horror films It doesn't use overt use of gore and blood to tell it's story or to shock and scare you. Instead it use the basic techniques horror films of the 30's. 40's, 60's and early to late 70's used to scare people, psychological tension and terror. 1408 picks at your brain the minute Mike Enslin(John Cusack) steps into the room, it pry's , pokes and prods at your mind like a little kid poking a rat in a cage or a lion toying with it's prey. It's an amazing and truly horrifying evil little terror machine the likes of which has never been seen.

John Cusack delivers an awesome performance as the distraught father and paranormal debunker, he brings allot of power and realism to a film that without him might have failed. Samuel L. Jackson is mind blowing as the believer of the cruse of 1408, Jackson gives off some serious energy and air of mystery in this and the truth of what he wants or even if he's involved. All in all the cast does amazing in this film and really helps make it more eerie and creepy with there great preformances.

1408 is dark, eerie, brilliant, complex and utterly horrifying It's one of the most effective horror film made in the past twenty years. It's something you have to experience or can't truly feel the terror, and trust me you will feel the terror. All in all 1408 is one room you want to spend the night in. That's if you can survive the night.

The Mummy (1999,  PG-13)
The Mummy
While I have not seen the 1932 Universal original production starring Boris Karlof I did, however enjoy and revel in this 1999 Stephen Sommers re-imaging of the classic horror machine. While having a unique story for it's time and amazing special effects "The Mummy" is much more, it's an extremely well thought out film and a highly entertaining Adventure epic that is right up there with Indiana Jones.

Stephen Sommers "The Mummy" is smart, fast paced, hilarious at times, touching at others and powerful in it's sweeping and dynamic story and atmosphere. But this film really benefits from it's strong lead performances from Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz who help elevate this film from average to great and really up the appeal and power of this film. But the real draw comes from the adventure and the excitement that is released in small capsules that in certain areas burst open and blow you away. But all in all this film is wild and crazy fun that is more well made than it should, and allot better acted and scripted than it should but you get what you want and more and in the end you won't be disappointed.

Brendan Fraser rocks as the tough but kind heartened adventurer Rick O'Connell, his performance is key to keeping this film afloat and believable if someone else was cast I don't think it would have worked out as well seeing as the humor infused with the terror and thrills and Fraser is the only one who I can see pulling this off to the point that you don't see the actor but the character he plays. Rachel Weisz is amazing as the smart and beautiful Evelyn Carnahan she really brings the charm, the heart and the style., she is also a great focal point in this film and helps bring a human zing quality to the picture. But all in all the cast does amazing in this film and under the direction of Stephen Sommers they succeed.

"The Mummy" is what you call outrageously entertaining and majorly exciting, it's one of those films that just captures you from the very beginning and won't let you go til the credits roll. "The Mummy" is high octane thrills mixed with old schooled horror and amazingly timed humor helps create one of the best re-imaginings of all time and one of the greatest adventure films since "Raiders of the Lost Ark".

Silent Hill (2006,  R)
Silent Hill
Silent Hill is one of the most popular and groundbreaking horror video game franchise of all time. All other horror survival video games today follow the protocol that Silent Hill set forth. Now in 2006 director Christopher Gans and Tristar pictures deiced to adapt the popular video game series into a film and while they follow the story of the first game pretty well. They did change some details from the game like the lead character is no longer author Harry Mason but a new lead created for the film Rose DaSilva the new concerned parent of Cheryl which doesn't please me as a fan of the game but does put an interesting twist on this old fan favorite.

This 2006 adaption follows the story of Rose DaSilva as she tries to help her disturbed daughter get over her unnatural sleepwalking spells where she keeps uttering the name of a town, Silent Hill. So Rose, against the wishes of her husband Chris, takes Cheryl to the eerie ghost town in desolate west Virgina. But as she enters the vicinity of the town something happens and she is involved in a car crash, when Rose awakes she finds her daughter missing. Rose sets out to find her but little does she know that there is more to this dark town then meets the eye and it may not be deserted as she once thought. Now Rose must find her daughter while unwrapping the mysteries of, "Silent Hill".

Silent Hill is eerie, haunting, shocking, mysterious, visually impressive and at sometimes rather mind blowing. Grant it it's not one of the greatest horror films of all time, but it is one of the better video game adaptions to come out in recent years. It has the air of mystery in the first half that most good horror films have and it also has the scares which modern horror seems to lack theses days that's the good now the bad is that the acting and the script don't quite hold up under the mind bending visuals and horror. But the thrills and chills of this film save it from being a complete and utter waste of time. All in all "Silent Hill" is a very effective horror machine with an interesting and intriguing story muddled down by a bad script and terrible direction, which held it back from being what it truly could have been. Utterly terrifying.

Radha Mitchell tries hard and in some parts of the film comes out on top, but her performance was dragged down by the poor direction by Christopher Gans and the terrible script. Mitchell does well at looking terrified but when she has to be serious and keep her cool she kind of falls short, which is forgivable most of the time and at others it is not. Laurie Holden is utterly terrible in this, she really drags the film down with her over serious performance as the tough female cop you just laugh most of the time she is on screen with the macho stuff she says sounds so dull and stereotyped it's hilarious, but she does try hard and I will give her that. Sean Bean is great as usual as the husband to Mitchell's character he brings style and heart to a rather cold and dark film, which in most cases works and in some it just slightly kills the story. But Bean is a welcome addition to the story. The cast does well for the most part but in some parts they just drag along and make the story less terrifying but given the material it is no surprise there. But I will give them the benefit of the doubt and say this in there favor, they tried hard and came out on top and made this film a little less shallow and dull than what it would have been.

"Silent Hill" is a shocking horror thrill ride at best but it's like a car if you don't take care of it it will fall apart. Well the production crew didn't take very good care of this car and it almost fell apart on them half way through. But somehow it made it to the end of the finish line. "Silent Hill" has great elements a sturdy plot and amazing visuals to fall back on when it needs to but this film is not unwatchable due to the bland acting. Everything else in the film will keep you int rested enough to make it through the end and that in my book is an achievement.

All in all "Silent Hill delivers on what it promises a good horror ride but it may turn off long time, die hard fans of the video game series. But it is great to watch if your a horror fan and have never heard of the games before but if you have this may disappoint you . All in all it delivers one wild and nightmarish ride.

Red Dragon (2002,  R)
Red Dragon
Red Dragon, while not as good as Silence of the Lambs, lives up to it's horrific roots exceedingly well and gives us a great look at evil contained.

Red Dragon is set prior to the events in the 1991 classic Silence of the lambs. In this we see how Lecter was captured and incarcerated at the Psych hospital it also introduces to us yet again retired FBI agent William "Will" Graham the man who captures the beast. After Lecter is tried and convicted of 11 murders an sentenced to 9 consecutive life terms, a new serial killer dubiously nicknamed "The Tooth Fairy" and later "The Dragon". emerges and murders two family in tow different cities a month apart. Naturally this catches the attention of the FBI and they immediately seek out Will Graham(Norton) to help track down this psychopathic mad man. Graham reluctantly agrees to help track down, "Red Dragon."

Red Dragon is brilliant, dark, complex, sadistic, horrific and relentlessly suspenseful it's one of the best of the series. But the haunting similarities between this prequel and "The Silence of the Lambs" keeps it from being the truly terrifying epic it could have been. Brett Ratner(Director of X-3 and The Family Man) does amazing here directing season actor Anthony Hopkins at his terrifying best. Ratner understands the material and he understands what Lecter is and how he should be played out on screen. The film is well conceived and well played out in every way imaginable it works on some many levels that when your watching it you don't feel like your seeing a movie but living it. It's extremely nerve jangling. All in all "Red Dragon" is an amazing piece of film making that is sure to please fans of the series and new comers alike.

Anthony Hopkins is more terrifying and sinister than ever as the diabolical Hannibal Lecter but he is left mostly as a bit player. But the scenes he is in are truly terrifying and solidify that Hopkins is one of the best actor of our generation. Edward Norton is fantastic and at the top of his game in this twisty and mind blowing thriller. Norton's Will Graham is much more resourceful and more brilliant than William Petersen version of Graham in Michael Mann"s "Man hunter". Ed Norton use every inch of his genius acting ability to make the character believable and worth watch on screen . Ralph Fiennes steals the show as the malicious and psychotic Tooth-fairy, Fiennes almost outclasses Hopkins and Norton in his role which is sad to see but also amazing at the same time. Fiennes performance truly blows your mind it may also shock you at the same time how crafty and sinister he can be. It's truly a sight to see. But all in all the cast is truly brilliant and something to admire in this heart stopping psychological thriller.

Brett Ratner's "Red Dragon" is enthralling in the fact that it draws you into a world you think you know and then completely spin it around on you and gives you something you've never seen before. It's as mind boggling and it is intriguing it will engage you every minute and every second you watch it. It's one of those films that must be seen not for the characters or the action but for the psychological aspects it relays onto the audience. All in all Red Dragon is one manhunt you'll want in on.

The Silence of the Lambs (1991,  R)
The Silence of the Lambs
In "Red Dragon" you saw how it all began, you saw how Lecter fell under a small mistake and ended up being incarcerated in a Baltimore Psychiatric Hospital. Now with Jonathan Demme's "The Silence of the Lambs" We get to see the manipulative tactics of Hannibal Lecter at full force.

"The Silence of the Lambs" picks up a few months after the events in Red Dragon in which Hannibal "The Cannibal" Lecter helped retired FBI agent Will Graham track down the tooth-fairy or also know as the "Dragon". Now a young rookie FBI trainee named Clarice Starling(Jodie Foster) is sent in to ask the help of one of the dangerous mind to help stop a crazed killer who goes by the name, "Buffalo Bill ". Now Starling has to match wits with the most sinister of minds to track down the killer now only time will tell if Starling can overcome her trouble past and beat Lecter at his own game and overcome her nightmares and finally hear nothing but, "The Silence of the Lambs".

This deep rooted and extremely complex Psychological horror thriller is at the pinnacle of perfectible and horror it's so smart and so terrifying that what happens in the film almost seems real. And the events unfolding in front of you will not just shock and appall you it will also keep you engaged and riveted throughout. This film when it came out quickly became a cultural icon of the early 90's and a building block for other slasher, psycho thrillers to follow till this day. It's a quintessential film that must be experienced for it's dark and moody undertones, it's brutal and gutsy portrayal of gritty and horrific violence for a early 90's film, for it's amazing performances especially from Anthony Hopkins, Ted Levine, Scott Glenn and most of all Jodie Foster. All in all "The Silence of the Lambs" is a must see film with unforgettable events and memorable characters, It's all in all it's one of those films that will just plain, straight out blow your mind.

Jodie gives an amazing performance as the young Clarice Starling, Foster doesn't hold back on letting her fear show on screen or her inferiority when she is matching wits with Hopkins' Dr. Lecter. Foster exudes an extreme sense of strength, will power, determination and smarts onscreen by the time your half way through the film your already connected to her and her character and that is the sign of a great actress and amazing direction. Foster is a highlight in this film and her face offs with Hopkins are worth the price of admission. Anthony Hopkins owns the screen with his first outing as the vicious and genius Hannibal Lecter, Hopkins is so terrifyingly good that it almost seems like that Lecter is another side to him. He's truly and utterly brilliant in this and at the top of his game. Ted Levine is psychotic and sadistic as the skin peeling serial killer " Buffalo Bill", he is so completely crazy that it's almost as convincing as Hopkins. Scott Glenn is another class act as FBI AIC Jack Crawford, his performance is not as strong as Foster, Hopkins and Levine but it is sharp and that makes him a standout in this. The cast are powerful and commanding in this dark and complex film and they own the screen and will keep you engaged all the way through to the shocking finale.

As terrifying as it is original "The Silence of the Lambs" has successfully stood the torturous test of time and become one of the greatest films of the late 20th century. It's a brilliant film with a taunt premise that will truly shock and amaze you.
19
Hannibal Rising (2007,  R)
Hannibal Rising
In "Red Dragon" we saw how his evil was contained, In "The Silence of the Lambs" we saw how he could manipulate and use others to his advantage and the true force of his sinister mind. In "Hannibal" we saw the true force of his intellect when out in the open. Now we get to see how Dr. Hannibal "The Cannibal" Lecter began his reign of terror and shows us his decent into madness.

This prequel to the previous five films is set in 1952 8 years after the cannibalistic death of his sister at the hands of a group of starving Lithuanian militiamen. Now a young man and having deep rooted hatred for the men responsible Hannibal sets out from the orphanage in his old home, Lecter Castle and move sin with his beautiful Asian aunt where after he moves to Paris to study medicine and therefore track down and kill all those responsible for the death of his beloved sister. Peter Webber and Thomas Harris finally give us the first true look into the mind and life of one of cinema's greatest villains and we finally get to witness, "Hannibal Rising".

"Hannibal Rising" is taunt, gruesome, brilliant, dark and extremely engaging. It's a dark film about a man who after a personal tragedy became the greatest horror legend in film history. Hannibal Rising is much more gruesome and brutal in it's portrayal of Lecter's violence but your so engaged and enthralled by the story it won't bother you or distract you from the main focal point of the plot. All in all "Hannibal Rising" is an amazing film with a powerhouse story of terror, sorrow and lost and an amazing look into the life of an icon.

Gaspard Ulliel owns the screen as the young and very vengeful Hannibal Lecter, his performance as Lecter almost rivals that of Anthony Hopkins. Ulliel brings true under hinged terror to the role and to the story and truly gives you a shocking vision of Lecter like you've never seen him before. Li Gong is not as good as Ulliel but she is good none the less. He performance is not meant to be truly compelling as it is for her to just and there and look good(Which she does so well.) But there are some scenes that she really shines. Dominic West is better than I've ever seen him as the dogged and determined Inspector hot on the trail of the young Hannibal. West brings some heart to the film and he is almost a welcomed replacement for Clarice Starling and that is saying something. But all in all the cast does amazing and really helps elevate this film, save the series and gives us a good look at the life of a young Hannibal Lecter.

Peter Webber and Thomas Harris' "Hannibal Rising" is a masterstroke of horror film making and may not be very well respected at this time but as time pass it may grow to become a cult classic much like Silence of the Lambs. But none the less this fourth installment in the Hannibal Lecter series is nothing short of horrifying and startling it's all around one of the best of the series.
