Brokeback Mountain (2005,  R)
Brokeback Mountain
Love is a force of nature. Two young men - ranch-hand Ennis Del Mar and rodeo cowboy Jack Twist - meet in one summer day while herding cattle. Within days of camping, their feelings about each other lead to a forbidden attachment: they fall in love. Seeing "Brokeback Mountain" got me into an unlikely yet ideal setting for this love story of 1963 Wyoming, when and where homosexuality was frowned upon on. Through 20 years of the drama, joys, and tension between themselves and their families the Ennis/Jack relationship really has to be carefully kept secret and must not be found out until a fateful conclusion. "Brokeback Mountain" is not just any gay cowboy movie - as what the media refers to it - it's a sad love story. I heard about the film's controversy from religious conservatives due to its content, yet audiences watched it (and wept over it) anyways. And as this a 2005 Academy Award winner for Best Director, the film should have won for Best Picture ("Crash" won instead). Besides, I find "Brokeback Mountain" interesting.

Directed by the Academy Award-winning Taiwanese director Ang Lee, who was also behind "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon", and based on a short story by Annie Proulx, "Brokeback Mountain" has the greatest acting performances from the following cast:
1.) Heath Ledger (Ennis Del Mar)
2.) Jake Gyllenhaal (Jack Twist)
3.) Anne Hathaway (Lureen Newsome)
4.) Michelle Williams (Alma Beers)
5.) Randy Quaid (Joe Aguirre)
6.) Linda Cardellini (Cassie)
7.) Anna Faris (LaShawn Malone)
8.) Kate Mara (Alma Jr.)

Interestingly, while they tied the knot onscreen, the late Heath Ledger and Michelle Williams were also married off the movie set (their relationship lasted until 2007). The film's dialogue is so fine - I like Jack's "I wish I know how to quit you!" quote from one dramatic scene. And the film's instrumental soundtrack sounds so beautiful that I'm hearing it from my head now.

Until recently, I wasn't interested in viewing "Brokeback Mountain", but due to my support of gay rights, I got interested and watched it anyways. God bless Heath.

The Passion of the Christ (2004,  R)
The Passion of the Christ
In an event that shaped the history of Christianity forever, the final 12 hours of Jesus Christ are dramatically represented in one epic tale. You know the part of the Bible where Jesus was betrayed by Judas, tortured, and crucified to death by the Romans? That's it - that's all of it. I see the film as a good Biblical interpretation of the event, and I find it moving, too. The bloody torture is at all graphically, shockingly real, and strongly enough to remind me of the horror flicks. But this is The Passion Of The Christ - and not Freddy vs. Judas - that I'm talking about: Mel Gibson, born of his strong Roman Catholic faith, directed this as to perfectly portray Christ's crucifixion. Even with the concerns that it would stir up anti-semitism due to the portrayal of the Jews, TPOTC did well on the box office (a $370 million gross!) and gave Mel a provocative new celebrity reputation.

The acting performances on The Passion Of The Christ are good, and they come from the following cast:
1.) Jim Caviezel (Jesus Christ)
2.) Monica Belluci (Mary Magdalene)
3.) Maia Morgenstern (Mary)

It may have a controversial filming history, but The Passion Of The Christ carries good Biblical value for good viewing entertainment, especially if you don't mind reading the English subtitles due to the Aramaic and Latin dialogue.

The Last Temptation of Christ (1988,  R)

The Da Vinci Code (2006,  PG-13)
The Da Vinci Code
Seek the truth, seek the codes, break the codes. And here I review The Da Vinci Code, the film adapted from the best-selling (and controversial) Dan Brown book that mentions the historical claim of a Jesus Christ/Mary Magdalene marriage and their modern-day descendants. It's a conspiracy theory that's as popular as, say, UFOs or the JFK assassination. The curator of the Louvre is found murdered in the gallery, and only Robert Langdon and Sophie Neveu can untangle the clues from the crime scene. As detectives and suspects, the two meet up with Sir Leigh Teabing who lectures them the history of the Holy Grail. I saw an interesting mystery film here, with the mention of secret societies that either defend or cover up Christianity's hidden history. And to utter out such cryptology like "O DRACONIAN DEVIL", I would have to wait for a good climax in later scenes as the mystery gets solved.

1.) Tom Hanks (Robert Langdon)
2.) Audrey Tatou (Sophie Neveu)
3.) Ian McKellen (Sir Leigh Teabing)
4.) Alfred Molina (Bishop Manuel Aringarosa)
5.) Paul Bethany (Silas)
6.) Jean Reno (Captain Bezu Fache)
7.) Jean-Pierre Marielle (Jacque Sauniere)

Overall, while I find it good or great, The Da Vinci Code and its clues may confuse - and, due to the religious content, sometimes offend - you. But as you watch from the start to the finish, you'll get used to it. Then you'll see how a part of world history is revealed.

Miracle at St. Anna (2008,  R)
Miracle at St. Anna
In World War II there were heroes and miracles in Tuscan, Italy. In December 1983, when the elder Hector Negron is interviewed by a reporter after shooting a man at the post office and his wardrobe revealed the long-lost head of the Primavera statue, he recalls his role in the African-American 92nd Division "Buffalo Soldiers" that took safety in a small Italian village while they were caught behind enemy lines and surrounded by German troops. With him and three other soldiers is the eight-year-old Angelo Torancelli, a lone survivor of the St. Anna massacre.

Directed by Spike Lee, Miracle At St. Anna features superior acting performances from the following cast:
1.) Derek Luke (2nd Staff Sgt. Aubrey Stamps)
2.) Michael Ealy (Sgt. Bishop Cummings)
3.) Laz Alonso (Corp. Hector Negron)
4.) Omar Benson Miller (Pvt. First Class Sam Train)
5.) Matteo Sciabordi (Angelo Torancelli)

Seeing Miracle At St. Anna gave me an excellent impression that a troubled racial minority could show their nation their strength in the military when they fight in Nazi-occupied Europe, even though they would experience growing prejudice within the unit. But there is always help within the Italian partisans, though a traitor could foreshadow a key betrayal later on. The action and war violence here moved me a lot as if they were real. I hear of the film's controversy over the portrayal of the massacre's depiction, but I know it's not much of a big deal - Spike Lee was only using history while it was based on the James McBride novel. And I don't find it all that bad, right? An epic story that I'd call it the BEST MOVIE EVER in the war genre definitely goes down in history as a film classic - so to heck with the majority of critics who disliked it.

Monty Python's Life of Brian (1979,  R)
Monty Python's Life of Brian
Honk if you love Brian. ::honks the horn:: Yeah, I can say that this is THE BEST FILM EVER - in the comedy genre - as this is masterpiece work by the Monty Python comedy troupe. Sure it may look blasphemous to some due to religious content but I (and many others) find Monty Python's Life Of Brian very amusing. I laughed all the way through the story... :-D

Brian is born in a stable on Christmas Day, right next to - that's right - Jesus Christ. The wise men appear and begin to distribute gifts. About 33 years later the Jews want to be free from Roman rule as well as spiritual and political decay, and a group sees Brian as their Messiah. He can't convince them that he's not. As he really hates the Romans, Brian joins the Peoples' Front of Judea. Did I say that I laughed all the way through the story? Well, Life Of Brian has good running gags, in-jokes, and silly puns that got me into the humor. One example: the speech of "Biggus D*ckus" funny with the "th" replacing the "s" ("Was it thomthing I thaid?""). I also like the musical number "Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life" at the ending, something I'll remember for a long time. I can tell you that this 1979 film is definitely flawless, classic comedy...you can't miss it!

Life Of Brian is directed by Terry Jones and stars Graham Chapman, Michael Palin, John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, and Eric Idle. After watching this film I guess I'm liking the silly Monty Python stuff now.
