My Favourite Action/Horror Movies

  2. Hannah

Unlike most girls, I like sitting down to a good adrenaline-filled action or horror movie. The more violence, explosions, blood and testosterone the better.
Here is my rather long list of my favourite action and horror movies

  Bluelfears's Rating My Rating
1
Jurassic Park (1993,  PG-13)
Jurassic Park
One of my all-time favourite movies. The idea of living dinosaurs is great, I can't even be mad at the science because nobody actually knows if this is possible yet!
2
Sin City (2005,  R)
Sin City
It sticks very closely to Frank Miller's graphic novels, in look, layout and style and it works very well. The casting is brilliant, the characters are well portrayed and the level of violence appropriately reflects the feel of Sin City.
3
Die Hard (1988,  R)
Die Hard
An absolute classic, full of hard-hitting action and violence. Plenty of testosterone flying around, and of course the usual love story.
4
The Lost World - Jurassic Park (1997,  PG-13)
The Lost World - Jurassic Park
A second dinosaur-filled island has been discovered, and in the words of Dr Ian Malcom "you're not making the same mistakes, you're making whole new ones". After discovering his girlfriend is one of the team on the island, Dr Malcom rushes to the rescue only to find a team of hunters arriving to take down a T-Rex. But soon they all become the hunted, and after an adrenaline-filled adventure around the island, Ingen's desire for money is so great that an adult T-Rex is unleashed on the poor unsuspecting US public. The best scene has to be the raptors in the long grass.
5
Resident Evil (2002,  R)
Resident Evil
As I have never played the games (I don't play on consoles) I found this a good horror zombie flick with a lot of surprises and suspense, And of course, lots of violence and gore and hot ladies in very small outfits :)
6
Die Hard 2 (Die Hard 2: Die Harder) (1990,  R)
Die Hard 2 (Die Hard 2: Die Harder)
One year on, John McClane is trapped in Christmassy terror when terrorists take over an airport in order to free a drug lord. Once again it's up to Detective McClane to single-handedly seek out the bad guys, stop the plot and stick it to authority. However what makes this different from the first one is you don't know whose side anyone is on.
7
Jurassic Park III (2001,  PG-13)
Jurassic Park III
Dr Alan is employed to give a rich couple a helicopter tour of one of the islands, but he soon discovers they're going to find their son and is kidnapped, now he not only has to find some evidence of the young boy, dead or alive, but he has to keep his party from being eaten. They really develop the raptors in this film, portraying an intellgience on par with our own. Unfortunately you can only do so much with giant carnivorous reptiles, and at this point it's wearing a little thin.
8
Die Hard With a Vengeance (Die Hard 3) (1995,  R)
Die Hard With a Vengeance (Die Hard 3)
A deviation from the Christmas theme, an old enemy is back to terrorise New York and pull off the biggest bank heist in the world. With a personal grudge on John McClane, he sends the renegade cop on a wild goose chase to keep him out of the real evil plan. With help from an unwilling partner, he jumps through all the hoops and saves the day just in time.
9
Hellboy (2004,  PG-13)
Hellboy
A great fantasy story, Hellboy is probably one of the best comic-to-movie adaptations I have ever seen. The story lacks in places, but it makes up in comedy, fantasy violence and monsters.
10
Raiders of the Lost Ark (Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark) (1981,  PG)
Raiders of the Lost Ark (Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark)
The best Indiana Jones movie of the lot, there's mystery, fighting, gore and plenty of heads exploding. A classic, inimitable movie full of action.
11
Pirates of the Caribbean - The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003,  PG-13)
Pirates of the Caribbean - The Curse of the Black Pearl
Great if you like pirate movies with a lot of the old swash and buckle. I like the myth and fantasy in it as well. Pass the rum...
12
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest (2006,  PG-13)
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest
The crew return and this time have to go up against the fury of the sea, in the form of Davy Jones (brilliantly played by Bill Nighy) and his crew of lost souls. Plenty of myth and mystery, as well as the usual dose of swashbuckling, a really fun movie.
13
Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984,  PG)
Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom
Another light-hearted archealogical romp which sees Indy go up against an evil cult, no, not the Nazis. Indiana is as per usual a straight-talking, and straight-shooting professor moonlighting as a "tomb raider". His choice of female companion for this movie was, to say the least, incredibly annoying. And which Einstein thought a young child in the plot would be a *good* idea?
14
Mary Shelley's Frankenstein (1994,  R)
Mary Shelley's Frankenstein
A gory, twisting, psychological horror that follows Dr. Frankenstein's life, before and after he creates the monster. A gripping tale with many twists and turns. Perhaps not for everyone, but I enjoyed it.
15
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989,  PG-13)
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
Indiana Jones is back on a quest for the Holy Grail, and he's brought his dad along for the ride. Once again up against Nazis, he has to figure out his missing father's work in order to save him. There's a hilarious love triangle, but the hardest part of the mission is choosing the right grail!
16
Van Helsing (2004,  PG-13)
Van Helsing
Another take on the Van Helsing/Vampire battle, with elements from many other supernatural tales. A fun movie for all, including those into the supernatural lore.
