War film is a film genre concerned with warfare, usually about naval, air or land battles, sometimes focusing instead on prisoners of war, covert operations, military training or other related subjects. Sometimes they focus on daily military or civilian life in wartime without depicting battles. Their stories may be fiction, based on history, docudrama or occasionally biographical. Most war films often include a romance somewhere in the plot.

MILLER: James Francis Ryan of Iowa?
RYAN: Yes, sir. Payton, Iowa, that's correct. What is this about?
MILLER: Your brothers were killed in combat.
RYAN: Which - Which ones?
MILLER: All of them.
This is another very close favourite of mine too because I love the characters in the film. The acting is very good. I am not surprised that it won Oscars for the sound and visual effects. Tom Hanks deserved his Oscar Nomination for Best Actor. Matt Damon, Jeremy Davies or Tom Sizemore should have been nominated for Best Supporting Actor but Steven Spielberg deserved its Oscar for Best Director. The story is really mad that 8 men are risking their lives to save ones life. This film is very well directed by Steven Spielberg as he has directed some of the most famous films of all time, e.g. Jaws, E.T, Indiana Jones trilogy and more. This is probably the best war film of all time. I love all of the battle scenes. The best are definitely Omaha Beach and the one in the town towards the end of the film. This is my favourite Steven Spielberg film. This film also proves a point of how serious war is and how horrible it was for all the families in those days, particularly the soldiers who died/survived in the film and the real WWII. I think Tom Hanks is with Spielberg and Zemeckis like Johnny Depp is with Tim Burton and Robert De Niro is with Martin Scorsese (actor co-starring in most of directors films). I could watch this film over and over again. This is my favourite action film that involves guns, cannons, bombs, etc. Captain John Miller, a decent school teacher in another life, is among the unfortunates storming Omaha Beach. As men are mown down and blown apart, the visceral editing and urgent camera work tug us into the heart of chaos. No viewer can doubt that war, however justified, is hell. Only after 30 minutes does the pace ease and the story begin, with Miller and his platoon assigned to find and bring back Private James Ryan, the brother of three soldiers killed in the same week, whos missing behind enemy lines. Thereafter the film becomes more conventional and mercifully, less relentlessly gory, at least until Ryan and a few other soldiers are finally found, and Miller and his surviving men join them in defending a bridge, at which point the nightmare begins again. Except for a redundant epilogue, sentimentally is mostly held at bay, but the film remains an utterly American take on WWII, with the lack of political, ethical and historical perspective which that implies. Why did Spielberg make it? He wants us to imagine we can feel the terror of being there, but does that make us wiser about this or any other conflict?

This is one of my all time favourite films. This is a really, really tense. This film is alot like Schindler's List because of all the Jews murders and the taking over of the Warsaw but when Wladyslaw is on the loose trying to escape Warsaw it is a bit like Children Of Men. He was trying to look for shelter, food and to stay as safe as possible just like in Children Of Men. When I heard that Adrien Brody won the Best Actor oscar in 2002, I was quite surprised that he won it, but when I watched it, I thought he definately deserved it. With his performance, it wasnt just the speaking in his performance but the way he was starving and how desperate he looked for shelter and food. I would watch this film over and over again. This is a masterpiece. In my mind this film should have won the Best Picture Oscar instead of Chicago. It was really well directed by Roman Polanski too.

An astonishing and powerful film about a group of Pennsylvania steelworkers whos lives are changed irrevocably by the Vietnam war. Michael Cimino's The Deer Hunter won five academy awards including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Supporting Actor for Christopher Walken. Also featuring astonishing performances from Robert De Niro, Meryl Streep and John Cazale. This film is widely acknowledged as one of cinemas great masterpieces and contains some of the most memorable scenes in film history. When Michael went deer hunting it was very tense because the viewers want to know whether he will shoot a deer and how graphic it will be. Another tense moment is when Michael, Steven and Nick are captured by the Vietnamese people and are playing Russian Roulette. It is tense that there is a bullet inside the gun with the gun aimed at someones head. Nobody knows whether the person will shoot himself or whether the bullet isnt exactly in that area of the gun. I think it is Robert De Niros best film. I also like The Godfather Part 2, Raging Bull and GoodFellas.

300
(2007, R)
Class slow-motion action. I liked this more than Sin City because the action was better and it was a better story. But still very good visual effects though. I think it should have had an Oscar nomination for best visual effects. This film could have had an Oscar nomination for Best Costume Design aswell. Gerard Butler was absolutely excellent. 300 is a valentine to violence, hilariously macho and eye-poppingly homo-erotic. It's also the best thing that Gerard Butler has ever done. Resplendent in his scarlet robe and sixpack, sporting a beard like a furry popcorn tub, Butler's warrior king brings both a sense of humour and a brooding intelligence to the slaughter. Gerard Butler plays King Leonidas really, really well because the way he plays the character it makes the character look totally immortal and cannot be defeated at all. Another thing that can make Leonidas undefeated is because of his big six-pack body. It totally shows that he is a very strong and powerful man. The glorificaton of the body, the dehumanised enemy, the sheer relentless carnage presented as poetry and ballet - 300 is almost fascistic in its devotion to war and heroism. I love the scene at the beginning with the large wolf. That is exactly the same visual effects as Sin City. I have seen this film loads of times. This film isnt just an outstanding action-packed film but it also has a lot of drama in it aswell, particularly when it involves the Spartan Queen Gargo. He's well supported by Lena Headey as his queen, who is thanklessly stuck at home to fend off Dominic West's slime-coated politician. 300 is not a complicated film. It's going to be widely ridiculed and rightly so, because viewed with the slightest critical distance it becomes extremely funny, but taken on it's own terms - as Greek myth meets Looney Tunes - it's kind of a masterpiece.

I rented this film for the first time and I only watched 45 minutes of it. But when I watched it again, this is one of my all-time favourite films. This is a classic masterpiece that everyone would enjoy. No wonder it is IMDBs number 9 film of all time. It is my favourite black and white film. This film shows that the classics can never die. This is a film that all of the classic songs and phrases can be remembered forever like SEE YA GAIN KID and WE WILL ALWAYS HAVE PARIS. After this film, I think they made it into a song. Humphrey Bogart was brilliant as Rick Blaine in this masterpiece. And so was Ingrid Bergman as Ilsa. When Rick sees Ilsa again, and when she wants him to help her and her husband, it is like a total clash of personality between Ricks tough character and Ilsas soft character. The flashbacks were really clever with Rick and Ilsa in Paris. This is nearly one of earliest masterpieces of all time along with Gone With The Wind, Citizen Kane, It's A Wonderful Life and The Wizard Of Oz. What an awesome classic masterpiece this film is. This film will become a classic phenomenon for generations!! After I have watched this and Gone With The Wind, I am going to start watching the old classic films. R.I.P: Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman. WE WILL ALWAYS HAVE PARIS!!

What a classic and phenomenal film. It is probably the best film of the 1960s. the story is very powerful. I really felt for Lawrence because he is white and really isnt Arab. Also, that he was forced to go to Arabia. When I heard that this was a true story I looked on the real T.E. Lawrences life biography before he died and I was fascinated by his biography. So I decided to watch this film. Peter O Toole is perfect for T.E. Lawrence because his boss sent him to Arabia and that the Arabs felt confused that a white man was there to join them and/or help them defeat the Turks. The cinematography is absolutely fantastic and so is the art within the film. The costumes are probably the best. There is a zoom out view during the film when you see the desert, it looks absolutely beautiful and also the sunset image like on the front cover of the DVD. I love the fact that the Arabs use camels instead of horses. I bet it must be hard to direct a film like this and to still make the film when there are sandstorms on the desert. There are some scenes of racism in this film (not really against the Arabs but against Lawrence). I could watch this film repeatedly. It is a very, very long film. I think it is longer than Gone With The Wind. It is a classic masterpiece that everyone would enjoy.

Awesome film. This is probably Ridley Scott best film other class ones are Alien, Black Hawk Down, Thelma & Louise and Blade Runner. I think the action is class in this film along with Saving Private Ryan, 300 and Kill Bill. It is a really depressing story particularly with Maximus and his wife and son that he lost. Really graphic film too. This is a truely classic film on revenge and slavery. The acting was superb in this film from Russell Crowe (won Best Actor oscar) and Joaquin Phoenix (nominated Best Supporting Actor). There is alot of awesome action in this film.

Probably the longest running film in film history. Vivien Leighs performance as Scarlett O Hara is in my opinion the best female performance of all time. Clark Gable was also fantastic in this masterpiece. When you see his face, hair, moustache and voice he is a bit like Vito Corleone from the Godfather. One of the most famous films ever made. It is pretty cool that a film is still a classic masterpiece after it was made like 70 years ago. But the first 2 and half hours was very exciting that was very enjoyable. I really felt for Scarlett because she loved this man who denies loving her back when he reveals later in the film that he really does love her, after he married one of her best friends. So Scarlett ended up with a nobody who just fancied her because she is beautiful. So clever how Victor Fleming created such a masterpiece just before (or at the very start) of WWII.

A brilliant classic 1950s film by Lawrence Of Arabia director David Lean. Plot is awesome. It deserved all the Oscars this film got. Alec Guinness was brilliant in probably his most famous film. There are some scenes however which bored me a bit like when they are in the large room talking about the plans for the bridge which lasted like 15 minutes. When you hear about the bridge for the first time you think that it isnt really that important but when you are about half way through the film the bridge is a really big turning point in the film. The scenery looks absolutely beautiful particularly the little beaches and the waterfalls. Sort of like Dances With Wolves scenery.
