Ali (2001,  R)
Ali
Initially I was sceptical about casting Will Smith, though he is a good actor, but I soon forgot it was him. The film is a powerful mix of sporting glory, human drama & politics. Those were highly charged times. Jamie Foxx plays another interesting character, in keeping with his rich acting repertoire. Jon Voigt was unrecognisable as Howard Cosell and I loved his ongoing banter with Smith/Ali, so funny.

The Bourne Ultimatum
Wow, what a thriller. I'm loving the suspense, the car chase and the karate-style fight sequences. Nevermind James Bond, Jason Bourne rocks!

I totally agree with Matt Damon's analysis of Bond: "Bond is part of the system. He's an imperialist and a misogynist, and he laughs at killing people, and he sits there slugging martinis and cracking jokes. It'll never be the same thing as this, because Bourne is a guy who is against the establishment, who is paranoid and on the run. He is a serial monogamist whose girlfriend is dead and he does nothing but think about her. He doesn't have the support of gadgets, and he feels guilty for what he's done." (IMDb)

James Bond has never appealed to me because he is embedded in the social values and Cold War mentality of the 1960s. Furthermore, I can't stand his arrogance and chauvinism, whereas Jason Bourne is an underdog, a realistic, albeit, reluctant hero. Bond films are mind-numbing and simplistic, whilst Bourne movies are thought-provoking and intelligent. Bring on the "Bourne Continuum" (?!) haha. I don't know if I can wait until 2010 for the next one!

The Boy in the Striped Pajamas (The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas) (2008,  PG-13)
The Boy in the Striped Pajamas (The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas)
Don't let the age rating or the child-based plot fool you -this film is devastating and chilling. The children's acting was excellent and the story was fascinating. However, the film would have been even better had it been in German. Not only did the English seem out of place, but London / Essex accents of the child actors came through. Furthermore some of the dialogue was anachronistic and irritated me for much of the film. Nevertheless the film stands out in the way it portrays Nazi Germany and the Holocaust through the eyes of a little boy and how he trys to make sense of it all.

Cry Baby (1990,  PG-13)
Cry Baby
Great film but not as good as its predecessor Hairspray which I simply adore! Nevertheless, Cry Baby is funny and the choreography is great. The jailbreak song "Please Mr. Jailer" has a real wow factor and the orphanage scene is hilarious. Johnny Depp is hot (that's a given), and I was pleasantly surprised by Iggy Pop's acting (his redneck bathtub scene is so funny). I watched it again with the director's commentary, which was fascinating. I really like the music and dance scene of 50s & 60s Baltimore that John Walters recreates.

Dirty Pretty Things
Don't let the film posters fool you, though it features Audrey Tatou, this ain't no Amelie, rather, think Eastern Promises. A real eye-opener and chilling -it makes you wonder what's going on around us. A gritty and very very dark reflection of society, nevertheless hope and humanity is not lost completely. The real star of this film is Chiwetel Ejiofor, what a brilliant actor.

Hitler: The Rise of Evil (2003,  Unrated)
Hitler: The Rise of Evil
A fascinating film that provides an in-depth context for the rise of an individual and his party, as well as probing deeply into his personal life. It shows how Hitler and his ideology flourished by enlarge due to the actions and indeed inaction of others. The film begins and ends with a profound reflection from the political philosopher Edmund Burke: "All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing." This observation underpins the whole movie, and while it is not as dark as the film "Downfall", it is nonetheless chilling and powerful in its effect on the viewer. Robert Carlyle is one of my favourite actors and in this film I am again reminded why. He transforms himself into Hitler and is so accurate in his mannerisms. Liev Schreiber also gives a strong performance. The only criticism I have of the film is that pretty much the whole cast retained their Anglo-American accents. The characters should have been speaking English with a Deutsche accent, if not with the German tongue itself.

The Last of the Mohicans
I found the first half a little underwhelming and kept thinking how much better "Dances With Wolves" was. Also the accent of the fine actor that is Daniel Day-Lewis was a tad questionable. But the film redeemed itself with it's interesting turn of events in the second half. I couldn't give the film a higher rating as I felt the portrayal of the characters were rather restrained, but the cinematography was beautiful and the background score epic and moving.

The Manchurian Candidate
This film took me by surprise -I was expecting a good and simple drama. When it began going a bit "sci-fi" I was starting to get disappointed, as that's not my sort thing. But then unfolded a creepy psychological thriller entwined with chilling political intrigue, and I was fascinated. It was eerie in a totally good way!

Set against the backdrop of Bangladesh's freedom struggle from Pakistan, the story is about a boat of Muslim & Hindu Bengalis who take a perilous journey in occupied territory to escape the terror of the Pakistani army in 1971.
