my gay movies

how brilliant was this film when i first saw it! the cast, including anthony mackie, dainel sunjata, percy boutte and anjonue ellis, is an embarassment of riches. evans' visual style is like jazz for the eyes. i hope he is shooting his follow-up to this very successful feature.

livingston's documentary is still a stunner after some 20 years. it is a source of personal heartbreak as well but i can't tell it because it's a spoiler. so see it, get to know and i'll share.

fassbinder films usually leave me cold. but not fox and his friends. it is so well acted and well paced. and theyoung actor david kross remonds me very much of the lead in this film. the more yo look at him, the more you love him.

this is a powerful little film that is hard to find. so if you get a chance to see it, watch it. it may be pre-aids, but there's plenty that is timely.

this sweet little whimsical film is a delight! it's funny, and ultimately touching on a very personal level. it addresses a lot of touchy aspects of gender with a light touch and mananges to be thought provoking.

this may not be the definitive film bio about oscar wilde but it is well designed and acted by its cast. its most arresting feature is the fact that its actors, particularly jude law and michael sheen, bravely go places that no american would have gone before a film like 'brokeback mountain' or 'milk'.

james wilby, hugh grant and rupert graves do the lesser known merchatn-ivory 'maurice' well. it is a complex story but it is very emotional and pretty much realistiin its depiction of gay life among the british aristocracy. they weren't too fond of gay men back then(reference 'wilde' as well). i hope things have changed.

i'm not quite sure where to put this film. not since george cukor has hollywood had a gay director with such style and sensitivity. i love all his work (except i'm not there, which i'm still trying to understand). in spite of the sub-plot in 'far from heavon' this film is to me, his gayest work. the rooftop scene pretty much clinches that theory.

felicity huffman was totally robbed of many an acting prize in 2006. she gave a brilliant performance in this well-done film about a male-to-female transsexual's journey across america with a young, apathetic that holds than his fair share of angst.

guinevere turner is a one luscious actress, as she displays in this film and the next on my list. but this film was lensed on the north side of chicago and it will always be high on my list for giving some light to chicago's lesbian scene.

cheryl dunye obviously enjoyed herself as she told this story about a young filmmaker that delves in to the life of an obscure actress from the 1930s. that is what is missing from film these days. filmmakers need to play more and pontificate less. not be frivolous mind you--but play. there is a difference and that difference is what makes film fun to watch.
