Apocalypse Now (1979,  R)
Apocalypse Now
Epic, truly epic. Depicts both the glory and fear of war. Mixes action with psychological subject matter, such as the human nature of killing. Marlon Brando is amazing in this movie, he adds so much magic to it in the short period of time that he is on screen.

August Rush (2007,  PG)

Beowulf (2007,  PG-13)
Beowulf
Amazing effects, looks stunning. A little on the long side, but the story keeps you interested enough. This is one of the best fantasy films I have seen in quite some time.

A Clockwork Orange
Very controversial upon its release, even band in some countries. It brings so many ethical and moral questions to the table that you will find yourself wanting to sit down to write a thesis on it.

Pure genius though, a movie that is still relevant in this day and age.

Dead Poets Society (1989,  PG)

Death Sentence (2007,  R)
Death Sentence
Not as bad as I was lead to believe, actually quite entertaining (in the mindless shocking violence kind of way). The movie is predictable from start to finish, so don't expect too much for a storyline. Gang kills boy, boy's father kills gang member who killed his son, blah, blah. I can guarantee you one thing that is always the case when it comes to vengeance movies, at the end the "good guy" will look at himself and see how he has changed into the killer or killers themselves. It is so cheesy and predictable, and ruins the essence of beign a vigilante.

Some impressive acting from Kevin Bacon at certain times in the movie. A good movie for you violence seekers and "revenge is a bitch" kind of guys.

Donnie Darko (2001,  R)
Donnie Darko
Dark, beautiful and pure unadulterated genius. If you are a very "black and white" kind of person then you might have a hard time with this movie. It requires somewhat of an open mind.

Donnie Darko tell the story of a 15 year old boy that is visited by a dark bunny who tells him when the world is going to end and manipulates Donnie into doing various deeds for him.

As the story goes on more and more makes sense, until the end comes and you will most likely be lost. This is a movie that you have to watch over and over again. I am still learning new things every time I watch it.

Fantastic movie, probably my favourite. Just so riveting and dream like. You will fall in love with it eventually, I guarantee.

Full Metal Jacket
The staff sergeant in this movie gives perhaps the funniest speech I have ever heard, if you appreciate crude humour. Stanley Kubrick's interpretation of Vietnam differs from say, "Platoon" because it focuses on the preparation of the war (them train...(read more)ing). What really threw me off was the fact that this was meant to be set in the U.S. mid west. When it was in fact filmed in England...hence the green fields, grass and cloudy weather. A must see if you (like me) love war action movies.
23
Good Will Hunting (1997,  R)

High Fidelity (2000,  R)
High Fidelity
All about broken relationships and music..the essence of life really. John Cusack's character reminds me of myself and my obsession with making musical playlists for random things...and I suppose my crappy past relationships. A movie that everyone can relate too in one way or the other.

The Hitcher (2007,  R)

The Hunt for Eagle One (2006,  R)

Kes
This movie reminds me so much of growing up in Yorkshire, with my dad working down the pit.

I had to watch this film for my GCSE's. I still holds a soft spot for me, and is something that I like to come back to now and again.

The film really depicts life in Northern England, and the harsh reality's of the surroundings. You don't really have much to look forward too, and there is little point in making goals for yourself.

Great performance by the local cast of actors, a nice gentle storyline (if a little sad at the end) and generally a good movie.

Lost Highway (1997,  R)
Lost Highway
I real head screw of a movie. On one hand it is a psychological thriller that twists and turns leaving you feeling mystified and mesmerized, and then on the other hand it is more nonsensical self masturbation from David Lynch. If you like to fully understand and comprehend your movies...this is not the movie for you. If you are open minded and see the "art" in movies, check out this dream like movie.
32
The Machinist (2004,  R)
The Machinist
The ending to this was great, never saw it coming. Reminds me a lot of Fight Club. Christian Bale's acting is stunning, and the fact that he shed all that weight to the extent that doctor's feared for his life, says quite aot.

A Nightmare on Elm Street
This movie is the nightmare of my childhood. Even to this day I still have some fear when I watch this movie. It is amazing how such a simple, childlike storyline can effect us in our adulthood. The sequels sucked a big one and should be ignored, this was the best and still is.

El Laberinto del Fauno (Pan's Labyrinth)
Not what I expected at all, very morbid in some places. There honestly isn't a movie like this, it is so unique. A really gripping storyline and a great fantasy tale.

One of the best soundtracks in a movie. This is an early 90's classic, much like "Reality Bites" it displays the waster lifestyle in all its glory. With appearances from "Alice in Chains" and Eddie Vedder from "Pearl Jam" this is a grunge-fest that c...(read more)an easily be enjoyed.

This Is Spinal Tap
Simply hilarious. One of the few movies that I can watch over and over again and still laugh at the comedy content. A real depiction of the glam, cock rock bands of the 70's and 80's.

The character's are great and instantly lovable, the humour is top notch, and the story flows perfectly.
