28 Weeks Later... (2007, R)
finally a sequel that doesn't suck. the opening scene of this movie is incredibly intense and sets the pace for the rest of the film. i loved the concept of the movie and it never gets to over the top. though danny boyle did not direct this one fresnadillo does a great job in recreating the same directing style and mood for the film which is what made the first one so great. though it is plagued with the "stalker zombie" which i hate it still is a great movie. |

300 (2007, R)
Visually stunning film. Every battle scene is amazing and the graphics of both armies are beautiful. However the comic book dialogue is kind of odd in this movie and doesn't translate as well as say sin city. Still it shows Snyder coming to form which he improves on himself even more with Watchmen. It's got a good cast and is one of my favorite films to watch when I want a lot of gory violence and manly battles. Badass film overall a lot of imagination here. |

Araburu tamashii-tachi (Agitator) (The Outlaw Souls) (2001, Unrated)
It's a sprawling awesome Yakuza epic full of everything the perfect gangster film needs. The movie is long, but builds into a mess of betrayals across all families all coming back to the small Higuchi gang. The movie isn't as violent as the other miike Yakuza films, but it didn't need to be. It's all about the undying loyalty of one solider to his boss and how he takes it on himself to dish out vengeance to anyone and everyone who deserves it. The main character is very likable and this is by far one of the strongest Miike Yakuza films as well as one of the best gangster movies in general out there. |

American Gangster (2007, R)
american gangster is a masterpiece in among the gangster genre line up. scott delivers a film that is right on par with a classic scorsese film. right from the first two minutes the mood is set and the film never lets up. almost clocking three hours in length i never got bored and every scene seemed to contribute something useful to the story. washington especially steals the who with his portrayal of frank lucas. i would not be surprised to see this one get many oscars. go see this movie if you love true stories or crime films this one is yet another reason why the crime genre is my favorite genre of movies. |

Ye yan (Legend of the Black Scorpion) (The Banquet) (2006, Unrated)
The movie is very visually stunning and had great martial arts sequences, however like most of the artsy ancient chinese films they often leave something to be desired in the character development and plot aspects. The banquet is no different, the film moves slow yet doesn't allow much time to let any of the characters evolve much beyond what they were at the start. The adaptation of Hamlet was a good idea though it could have been better. Started out and ending strong though the middle was where the film was brought down. Worth the watch to feast your eyes on some beautiful swordplay and costume design, but if you are looking for an in depth drama perhaps it's better to look elsewhere. |

Barton Fink (1991, R)
Darkly funny and my favorite Turturro/Coen collaboration! John Goodman is awesome and this movie is just all around clever and fun. How can the life of a troubled writer making a script for a B-Wrestling Flick be so hard? This movie is the Coen Bros. response to criticizing the blow creativity must take for the sake of mindless entertainment. Bravo again my Bros. Bravo... |

Big Bang Love, Juvenile A (2006, Unrated)
This movie is an epic work of art. It's a big step into new territory for miike and one of his best films. The love and compassion radiates between shiro and jun, without much words or development needed. The story is so complex in such a short movie and unfolds beautifully. The movie is full of brute intense violence mixed with incredible beauty and elegance. The prison it's self is breathtaking the sets are simply eye candy enough. This is a movie that blew me away and is definitely not for everyone considering the brute violence and homosexuality aspects, but for those who appreciate experimental film it's a must see. Miike continues to impress me and this movie is a new level for him. |

The Blind Swordsman: Zatoichi (2003, R)
After rewatching this film being aware of more of Japanese culture and the film making style of Beat Takeshi I love it even more! The movie is amazing in it's execution and is entirely true to the classic 70s-80s samurai film era. The tale of zatoichi the blind swordsman is not a character that came from the mind of Takeshi, but he made the character his own. The characters are great and the movie has a perfect ending with a great scene at the end. The swordplay is awesome and the showdown between zatoichi and the famous bodyguard is exactly how it would have been back in ancient Japan. Total badass classic film definitely one of Kitano's best. |

Chi to hone (Blood and Bones) (2004, Unrated)
A stunning film that was so very real it was disturbing. This movie is classic asian drama in that it holds nothing back and lets the viewer experience every hardship this family endured to the fullest. Kitano keeps the feel of the film at it's most depressive state as his own personal frustrations and anger continue to be passed on to his family and those close to him. His hate fuels him as he shows no mercy to any of those around him. The performance is stunning along with his wife and young son. The film utilizes the themes of the lifestyle of Korean immigrants in Japan along with family to tell a story that is quite horrifying, the film has intense violence, rape, and deals with issues like suicide and domestic abuse. It's a very good film and deserved all the praise it got though is definitely not for the weak of heart. |

Blood Simple (1984, R)
A very elegant little quiet story perfect for the debut of the coen bros. The movie is based on greed and an affair which combined lead to deadly consequences for every one involved. The movie is a great piece of Noir murder and suspense and a perfect example of low budget independent film making at its best. It's rare, but I'm glad i got a copy. |

3-4x juugatsu (Boiling Point) (1990, Unrated)
Like Sonatine, this movie is very very slow, but worth the wait. It's hard to call this movie a Yakuza film exactly, but it is right in the middle of that world. The film had a main character which was perfectly designed and whom made the final scene so much better. It was interesting to see Kitano take the back seat as far as acting and play the small role of the Yakuza in Okinawa. Overall the story was very well done and a great film by Kitano and one which marked his career as a writer/director which led to many more great films. A very defining film for the style of Beat Takeshi and one that is not to be missed for any fan. |

Brother (2001, R)
This film is a classic kitano gangster film but with a twist. The film takes place in Los Angeles and has just as much English and it does Japanese. The film is much more violent than the other films Kitano has done, but is still very entertaining. The movie has tons of shoot outs and leans more on the side of action rather than drama. The film was given bad reviews for not being the typical "Kitano Film" but he wasn't going for that. The move out of Japan showed that Kitano wanted to do something different with the genre and overall he did. Brother is nothing like Sonatine, but still a well executed Kitano film. |

Casino (1995, R)
An entirely entertaining crime epic film. De Niro and Pesci give outstanding performances. The character development is nicely developed as everything in the story goes to hell. Ends with the classic climax of mass killing and devastation of everything. Scorsese makes a great crime film to follow goodfellas. |

Casino Royale (2006, PG-13)
bond is back and better than ever. this is by far the best recent bond movie since goldeneye. Daniel Craig adds new personality to the character and the script is beautifully executed. sean connery would be proud. so go see this movie is you are already a bond fan and if you aren't you will be after watching this. |

Castle in the Sky (Tenkû no shiro Rapyuta) (1989, Unrated)
Another great fun adventure from miyazaki. It's not as classic as the other films, but castle in the sky is still a wonderfully animated and great story. All of these movies are filled with so much imagination and unique plot lines it's no wonder they are so famous. Given how this film was made in the 80s it really showed how the Japanese were ahead of their time in their classic animation skills. It's a wonderfully awesome and fun adventure anyone could love. Laputa is a great and mysterious place and the journey all the way there is awesome. I especially loved the change in the relationship with the pirate gang. Good good good |

a shocking look at the world with no chilidren. clive owen and michael caine are the main high points of the film. the beginning starts out rather slow but towards the middle gets to be very intense. the battle scenes are wonderfully shot though the ending is rather dissapointing. this film is well worth a viewing. |

Day of the Dead (1985, Unrated)
OK time to review this entry after re watching it. Well what to say about Day of the Dead it isn't as good as night or dawn, but also is a poorly underrated entry as well. The film is still classic Romero and has that classy over acting B-horror feel even despite the fact that this one had a larger budget. The characters are rather interesting and the ones you truly hate have a final blow that makes their annoying over acting oh so worth it. It's got the best gore out of all the Romero films and some of the most mesmerizing zombie deaths ever. In the end not going to be remembered as a true horror classic, but Romero doesn't disappoint and this film opens the doors to many advanced zombie theories present in later films. So hey give it a try it's good zombie fun. |

Yasha-ga-ike (Demon Pond) (2005, Unrated)
yay! first person to comment on this film or should i say play. yes miike directs a full on staged play which was recorded onto film. The play is over 2 hours and takes place on a single set the entire time. The use of lighting and changes in characters gives the play it's variety and after the first half an hour you are totally immersed the actors and costumes are amazing and the story is rather simple yet quite beautiful. It is all about the love and all the characters are not the same by the time its all over. The play uses japanese folklore of animal spirits to tell the story and has a climax that couldn't have been better. Miike really can direct anything and his recent play proves it. |

The Departed (2006, R) |
|
| 83 |
The Descent (2006, R)
The descent with the appropriate ending is amazing. The film is very slow and the monsters don't even come until nearly an hour in but the film uses the journey further into the cavern as a way of building tension. The trip down as well is quite enjoyable and lets the characters be very well developed and the viewer has the ability to really feel the despair of the situation. The film doesn't use any cliche or cheap scares to bring in the horror and is highly original in its' execution. The film has its share of gore, but most of the horror comes from the ambiance of the cavern itself. A very well done horror film and too bad more of the newer films couldn't learn from it. |

Dolls (2002, Unrated)
Such a beautiful film. The movie holds strong to the theme of love and expresses it in all kinds of forms throughout the three stories. The film is quite simple and holds tons of symbolism and covers the entire spectrum of emotion. It's a lot different from what you'd expect from Kitano but this film proves he really is a masterful filmmaker. The scenery and characters are so wonderful there is not much dialog but that is what made this movie so good. It made me happy sad and very pleased. It's such an original piece of cinema and one that will stay in your memory for a long time. Simply wonderful and beautiful in every way a masterpiece. |

Oh wow must have seen this one before I was big on flixster. Well Eraserhead is simply a stunning and amazing piece of both independent cinema and film in general. It's a disturbing look at the horror of having a family and dealing with relationships and takes place in a truly lynchian utopia. Jack Nance is wonderful as the lovable Henry and overall the film brought in a whole new style of cinema and is a milestone in film. I adore this film and it is one of my favorite films of all time. |

Sabu (2002, Unrated)
Sabu is a very solid period drama about two friends who are caught up in the ultimate test. As Eiji is sent off to a prison/labor work camp on an island for a crime he didn't commit Sabu is determined to keep his spirits up and clear every thing up for him. Over the course of the story all the characters change and the lives of all come together as most of the main characters become adults. The character of Nobuko and her pimp which ends up on the island with Eiji was the most powerful part of the film. The film is about growing up and forgiving those who have harmed you for the sake of those you love. The movie ended with a delicate note and well deserved all the high praise it got. It's new territory for Miike, but he did it well. |

Minnâ-yatteruka! (Getting Any?) (1995, Unrated)
Hmm guess I must review this one again. Getting Any? starts out really funny and does a good job at keeping up that wacky tone throughout the movie. Kitano is funny as the mad scientist and the lead guy does look like the type who isn't good with the ladies but wishes he was. His journey to have car sex takes him across all different types of vehicles and assorted jobs/criminal attempts which he thinks will land him the big bucks to be able to do it. It's a classic slapstick comedy, but is totally unique to Japan. Sometimes a little dumb and boring, but overall enjoyable. In the end this movie is asking you Minna Yatsuteruka!!! :P |

Yôkai daisensô (The Great Yokai War) (2005, PG-13)
This is an overall unique and fun family movie. There is so much variety in the various yokai and they are by far the most interesting thing about the whole movie. The young boy is very cute as the kirin rider and the whole movie uses japanese folklore to tell a very interesting fantasy story. The movie was not excellent especially for a miike movie, but nonetheless it's very fun and a great movie for anybody of any tastes or age. |

Fireworks (Hana-bi) (1997, Unrated)
Fireworks is like the companion film to Sonatine, in that it follows a very similar formula yet the main character is one the other side of the law. Kitano revisits his "bad" cop persona of his first film violent cop, but takes a completely different approach to it. He is a cop whose unethical law enforcement tactics loses him his job while he debts keep in in the pocket of local yakuza. Add that to the combination of a sick wife and it all leads to a beautiful climax of violence and a sense despair. A very quiet film with bursts of violence and total Takeshi in every way. Fireworks is a winner and an excellent film. |

Heat (1995, R)
Heat is violent and intense. Mann writes and directs an L.A. crime saga unlike any I have seen in a long time. The film is almost three hours in length, but the story keep you constantly on the edge and not knowing what will happen next. The action sequences are directed brilliantly and both Al Pacino and De Niro potray both sides of the law in a brutally realistic way. A very impressive addition to the crime genre. |

The Host (Gwoemul) (2007, R)
The host is the best monster film i have ever seen. The story focuses on a small time main character trying to rescue his daughter from certain doom. The Hudsucker Proxy is by far the worse Coen Bros. movie, but it's still a fun one. It was awesome to see Robbins in a comedic role, and fun to watch the imaginary tale of the creation of the Hulla-Hoop. Perhaps it would have been rated higher as a movie in general, but considering the other films in the Coen Bros. library it just falls short. |

Ikiru (Doomed) (Living) (To Live) (1956, PG)
to live indeed. this is a great kurosawa film. it really showed the value of life no matter how long you have left. takeshi shumura is wonderful in his role as the hopeless watanabe. It's a beautiful film with a wonderful ending that stresses the importance of just living your life the best you can no matter what your circumstance is. Also how even someone who doesn't think they are that important really can make a difference in the lives of others. An interesting departure from most of the samurai films Kurosawa made during the 50s but this movie stands among them as an equal giant and classic. |

Saibogujiman kwenchana (I'm a Cyborg, But That's OK) (2006, Unrated)
This movie is completely insane, but in a very cute way. The film shines in all the characters of the various patients in the hospital. Each have their own form of mental illness and contribute something to the overall atmosphere of the hospital. The music is beautiful as it is in most of Park's films and the acting is top notch. As Young-goon continues to refuse to eat the situation becomes more and more desperate and Il-soon's growing compassion towards her brings the movie into one of the oddest yet cutest romantic couples I have ever seen on film. It's a very clever film and something that is far from what Park has usually done, yet still retains his signature directing/writing style. Hard to find a copy of but definitely worth watching. |

In Bruges (2008, R)
This movie is tempting to say it's one of the best i have seen for 2008. It is incredibly funny and serious at the same time. The story and scenery is beautiful and farrell, gleeson, and fiennes are all so great in their respective role. Don't let the trailer fool you the movie is funny, but it's nothing like what you would except. The movie has perfect pacing and spends almost the entire time in bruges, it is hard to catch in theatres, but do yourself a favor and watch the dvd this movie is above and beyond excellent original film making and story telling, just simply loved it in every way! |

Mou gaan dou (Infernal Affairs) (2002, R)
great story if you like the departed you will like the movie it was based on. the story plays out pretty much the same except for the ending concerning tony leung and andy lau's interaction. overall very good cop drama from hong kong and deserved the excellent remake. it's very intense and plays off the old cat and mouse chase very well. I enjoy all the characters very much and loved how this film plays equally on the roles of the police and triads. |

Infernal Affairs II (2003, PG-13)
what happened before infernal affairs? this movie. overall gave great information on the rise of sam through the triads and the early days of our two moles working up the ladder of the traids and police. must see if fan of series. this series is almost like the modern Hong Kong version of the Godfather and this is almost like the Godfather 2 with nice character background and a bloody massacre on how all the characters ended up the way they did in the first film. Not as good as the first one, but still incredibly awesome. |

Infernal Affairs III (Mou gaan dou III: Jung gik mou gaan) (2003, PG-13)
Sadly like the Godfather trilogy this film falls into a similar struggle. The film is the by far the weakest of the three, but is still a very good movie stand alone. The film follows ming and the aftermath of the first film as he slowly tries to clear his name and become a regular cop. However things are still complicated as he must take care of all the other moles in the police department left over by Sam. It also includes many recent flashbacks into the therapy sessions with Yan and the few recent events that took place a few days before his death. I watched the directors cut and perhaps it was too long, but overall I still enjoyed this movie and it brought some great closure to an excellent series. Still a great movie I just wish it would have been as good as it's two previous entries. |

Intolerable Cruelty (2003, PG-13)
Wow what a classy comedic love hate relationship. This is one of the first romantic comedies where i loved both characters and couldn't pick a side. It's definitely not the humour you would expect from the Coen Bros. but it's definitely a successful attempt at the genre. It made me laugh and overall enjoyed it very much. |

Izo (2004, Unrated)
definitely miike's most experimental film. it is a story about izo as he kills as many people as possible until he finally reaches the leaders of the aristocracy. the movie is violent without purpose and full of great songs sung by an old man with an acoustic guitar. not great for entering the world of miike but if you are already there check it out. most people hated this one i thought it was good. besides its got beat takeshi in it come on he kicks ass. |

JSA: Joint Security Area (Gongdong gyeongbi guyeok JSA) (2000, Unrated)
This is a very powerful military drama that follows the story of a forbidden friendship between 4 soldiers belonging to both north and south korea and the catastrophe that follows their exposure. The movie is not an action movie, but plays out just as entertaining with a combination of the investigation into the death of the two north korean soldiers and the flashbacks which slowly put all the pieces together. It's a very good film that demonstrates the true hostility that is present right at the front line that still divides Korea into the two countries it is today. A very bold film and a powerful look at the thin line of a soldier having to choose between country and friendship. Well done Mr. Park well done again. |

Prepare for the first in my series of James Bond Reviews. Having recently purchased and rewatched all the films i feel it necessary to review them on here. The Man with the Golden Gun is a decent film, not as exciting as the others, but I still found it fun to watch overall. The midget servant was awesome and scaramanga was a cool villain. overall not bad not great just fun to watch. |

GoldenEye (1995, PG-13)
The best bond film of the 90s and by far Brosnans greatest film as bond. Everything about this movie is great the plot, action and villain. Come on 006 can't get any better than that. Watch it people it brought James Bond to the younger generation and inspired one of the greatest video games of all time. |

Die Another Day (2002, PG-13)
Ok lets see here. This movie was awesome the first hour. The whole part in North Korea had so much potential. What happened? hmmm well the action was cool, but genetically conditioned Korean people!? With cyber arms that controls a satellite melting the world. i'm sorry i can't buy that one. Halle Berry is ok, but not in a Bond movie. I guess the best thing about this movie is they managed to follow it up with Casino Royale which is one of the best films of the year hmm go figure. |
|
| 162 |
The World Is Not Enough (1999, PG-13)
Not as great as Brosnans other films in the series but way better than die another day. overally this movie was interesting, but could have been better. Though the action was great and always kept me entertained so I wasn't dissapointed. Robert Carlyle does a good job as the villain even though the "no pain" aspect was a little odd. Though the plot was a little more realistic so check it out. |

The Spy Who Loved Me (1977, PG)
Yeah! Its roger moore in one of the best bond films he did. I enjoyed this movie up until the bitter end. Jaws is a cool villain and the whole underwater city concept was nice. Not to mention the huge fire fight at the end on the ship. Yes check this one out especially for an introduction to Roger Moore as bond. |
|
| 165 |
A View to a Kill (1985, PG)
Probably one of the worst bond films ever. Roger Moore is way to old to be bond and it shows from the lack of action and smoothness expected from the bond series. And the bond girl you ask? well have you seen the temple of doom and thought that chick was dumb, just watch this one. Even Christopher Walken wasn't even a good villain and he's Christopher Walken. I'm sorry Bond, but you get an angry fist for this one. |

Octopussy (1983, PG)
This is definitely one of the more hokey James Bond films, but it's still pretty entertaining, despite being silly a lot of the times. Roger Moore brings out bond good as he slowly reaches his final films as the character. I loved Octopussy and all her deadly girls and the ending definitely made up for all the slow parts in the middle. Though not one of the classics in the long series Octopussy is definitely entertaining, and follows that familiar formula fans of the series know oh so well. Lots of different locations and a story that is believable enough, well worth a watch for any fan of Bond, though maybe not for those just getting started. |

Chinjeolhan geumjassi (Lady Vengeance) (Sympathy for Lady Vengeance) (2005, R)
excellent way to end trilogy. i loved how a female was the main character because it really gave a new perspective on what a female may do with her revenge plot compared to in oldboy where it was a male. this movie is violent, but is very elegant and quite beautiful both in how it is shot and the music present in the film. the lead actress has an original beauty that is quite sad, yet makes her character all the more wonderful for the film. these movies are great best revenge thrillers out there. |
|

The Ladykillers (2004, R)
This was a really funny, yet dark comedy. The movie has a very simple premise but is always entertaining. Tom Hanks is really cool and a very odd character. My next favorite was probably Wayans character and of course the General haha. Perhaps this movie got hammered more because it was a remake, but I liked it. Definitely not the Coen Bros. best but a whole lot better than every other comedy coming out. |

Last Life in the Universe (2004, R)
It's such a beautiful piece of asian cinema. It's a very slow paced film, but it deserves to be. The majority of the film focuses on the characters of Noi and Kenji as Noi suffers with the death of her sister and her desires to change her life and Kenji deals with his OCD and constant sense of depression and the desire to commit suicide. The film welcomes get cameos from Takashi Miike and Riki Takeuchi as the renegade yakuzas coming for Kenji. It's violent, sweet, mysterious, dark, and beautiful all at the same time. It's a wonderful blend of asian cultures and a film every fan of eastern cinema should see. |

Dammit Coen Bros. quit doing every genre in the book and then doing it well you'll make everyone else look bad. The man who wasn't there is a great piece of Noir because it's just so simple yet wonderful. What starts out with a simple affair ends in so much more like classic Noir should. Everyone was perfect for their parts especially Thorton and Gandolfini. So watch it, the tale of this simple barber is just awesome! |

Boxcar Bertha (1972, R)
Actually pretty cool! You can tell this is definitely a film that was made on a limited budget, but Scorsese's talent shines through and it just glimmers with the future talent he would bring to the world. For that reason most people need to quit hating this film, because anyone who is watching this trying to compare it to the departed, goodfellas, casino, or taxi driver is a moron. It's a totally different film and before scorsese was the huge director is he now, and a vessel for him to show the world what he is made out of. With that being said the movie is kinda slow and does have problems, but Barbara Hershey does a great job as Bertha and David Carradine and the rest of her gang are all lovable and different characters. A very interesting and really captured a whole new side of the people in the depression. It's Bonnie and Clyde meets the railroad and it's a really fun ride. |

An overall great tribute to the last concert of the Band. Though I didn't like all of the music throughout the film I still enjoyed watching it. Its a great film that captures the true feel of the end of an era of classic american rock and roll. |

Another great film from the coen bros. The film started rather slow, but was still intriguing. The dialog is clever and even mixes in a bit of humour. When it all finally does come together, the film unfolds into an excellent gangster epic. It's a small town mob movie with all the intensity of a major one. It's a town where the politicians and police are up for sale, you can't trust anyone, and one screw up will leave you dead in the woods at Miller's Crossing. So remember, the first shot puts em down, the second and you know they are dead. Thank you again Coen Bros. I don't know what I'd do without your movies. |

You wouldn't think that a girl who constantly abuses you and tells you what to do would be worth sticking with but this one is. Definitely the greatest romantic comedy ever made because its the only one that has my respect and I actually liked. |

No Country for Old Men (2007, R)
i do believe its fair to say the coen brothers are gods. this movie was amazing. it improves on what fargo did and relocates itself to southern texas/mexico. it did not have a single piece of music in the entire thing and the realism was incredible. javier bardem plays a truly original villain and with his air compressor and silent shotgun his reign of terror is something have to see. don't even try to predict where this one goes the script and direction is flawless. the movie is also deeper than the trailer suggests, and provides an ending to make you think. jones and brolin give very good performances as well. its a story of greed, drugs, and violence all around an are all too familiar with enough intensity to make anyone uneasy. i haven't seen every movie released this year, but this is one no one with any descent taste in movies should ever miss. *flips a coin* call it...i'm calling superb. |

Oldboy (2005, R)
Hmm I'm not sure what happened to my original review, but oh well here we go again. Oldboy is one of those movies that you will only see once and nothing else comes close to comparing to it. This film along with the rest of the vengeance trilogy puts all other revenge thrillers to shame. This chapter is very intense and with a male lead the aggression is heightened and some of the scenes are quite brutal. This is a movie that deserved all the praise and being made in Korea the film was allowed to explore areas which modern american cinema can't explore. It has one of the best endings I have ever seen and probably will ever see in a movie for a very long time. Instant Classic and one of the greatest films ever made. |

a more unknown j-horror entry. the story isn't all that original so that is why it did not get a 5. however miike does a better job than the people making ringu and ju-on style films like this. the horror is intense and miike adds his own personal flair. its just come on japan we know asian ghost girls with long hair killing people is scary please try something else. still this one is way better than its competition. just make sure to turn off your cellphone.... |

Ok first of all anyone who likes this movie obviously doesn't know who the onion news organization really is. I bought this movie expecting the same quality intelligent humour found on their internet news postings, but got a sub par movie filled with the immature humour in all those scary movie films. It did have it's moments, but overall this movie was a giant sketch comedy film that fails miserably. I truly hope if the onion does attempt to make another movie they appeal to their true viewers and not a bunch of stoned out high school kids. |

actually really really good. this movie did what lost in translation did for japan. its rather quite similar, just people interacting with people with the city as the one thing that brings them all together. some of the stories made me laugh, feel sad, or were just bizarre...but out of all of them i didn't find one i couldn't find something to love about. the world needs good movies and it needs a lot more creative projects like paris je t'aime. |

Ano natsu, ichiban shizukana umi (A Scene at the Sea) (1991, Unrated)
This movie was beautiful and right up there in line with Dolls. It's another slow love story which has a very happy and sad mood at the same time. Having both the main characters be deaf was very moving as the film involved little words and spent most of it's time developing characters through their actions. The movie encourages people to live their life and pursue whatever dreams they have despite any handicaps holding them back. It blew me away and proves that Kitano can leave behind the violence and crime dramas to make a film that hits you in the heart and stays with you. Simply genius film both in direction and story. Great! Kitano is the master of taking movies which are always slow, but never bore you. |

Michael Moore the one guy in America everyone loves to hate! I have always been a fan of his films and think his skill as a documentary film maker is brilliant. Sicko does well to show the horrible truth and problems with the American Health Care system in all aspects. The film hits you with a barrage of shocking compares and contrasts as the health care systems of England, Cuba, France, and Canada present blatant evidence to not only how free universal health care can work, but its the right thing to do. Every time I watch a Moore film I feel angry and sad at the same time and Sicko is no different. Well done again Mr. Moore. |

Sukiyaki Western Django (2008, R)
The film has awesome scenario and is incredibly clever and original in it's whole premise. The story is about two gangs the whites and reds who are battling for a hidden treasure which may not exist, when the mysterious gun man arrives to town...yes sounds like the typical western, but that's the whole point. The movie is Miike's tribute to both the classic Japanese Samurai/American Western epics and are blended together in a very interesting film. The movie was shot in English with an entire cast (besides tarantino) being native Japanese speakers. The movie is slightly slow in the middle, but opens with an awesome scene with Tarantino and ends with a very satisfying epic western gun fight. The movie is not to be taken seriously and obviously the whole "Sukiyaki" is a spin off of the Spaghetti Western. It's kind of hard to come by but worth a look I enjoyed it. |

Sunshine (2007, R)
What an awesome sci-fi flim from the creators of 28 days later. the concept is a little far fetched because it would take thousands of years for the sun to even begin to die, but hey this is sci-fi! The movie is simply beautiful and the Sun itself is almost another character in the film. The acting and directing is top notch and I was never bored with this film. I haven't felt such impressive scenery in a space film since 2001. It doesn't go over the top with the supposed "slasher" aspect and the ending is what I was hoping for. I waited forever to see this movie and it impressed me entirely! |

Survive Style 5+ (2004, Unrated)
wow what an insane trip. even the sub stories don't develop much beyond the first five minutes you are introduced to them, but they are continually entertaining. koko imagines commercials which are all hilarious and the constant battles of a man in trench coat against his dead wife is always interesting. even vinnie jones plays an interesting part as he goes around becoming involved in all the other characters stories. japanese films are quite weird but this one is insane. keep an open mind and expect the unexpected from this one! its very funny, demented and completely absurd check it out! |

Takeshis' (2005, Unrated)
It's so weird! The movie takes the approach of being all about the surreal visuals rather than a concrete story. The movie felt much like a dream as it was filled with random scenes of weirdness violence and humour as can be found in all of Takeshi's films. The idea was also very interesting of Kitano playing himself the superstar and a lowly convenience store clerk who wishes to become him. It's very hard to tell what is in reality and not past about the first 15 minutes, but it's ok. The director himself even claimed it was a film not to be completely understood just watched. Many people will hate it, but for those who have seen and understood the crazy mind of Beat Takeshi it's wonderful homage to one of the coolest funny actor/director/writer in Japan. |

Janghwa, Hongryeon (A Tale of Two Sisters) (2003, R)
A truly eerie Korean story. This movie is actually very terrifying in certain moments and the acting from especially the two young girls is great. You really feel the bond between the two sisters and the movie only proceeds to get more and more creepy as it progresses. Some scenes are so intense and the performances are amazing. I haven't been scared by a film in a long time and this one did it for me. Let's just hope its greatness isn't ruined by a crappy english remake. |

There Will Be Blood (2007, R)
Not quite the film i was expecting, but that isn't a bad thing either. The movie is very well done and lays out it's epic story at an appropriate pace. Though I was expecting more of the film to focus on the struggle between Daniel and Eli, it was definitely more the story of one man's greed and desire as he slowly loses grip with everyone and everything around him. The music was so amazing Greenwood did a fabulous job creating music that fit with the ideals and themes of the film. The final scene is so powerful and intense I was left in shock. It wasn't the best film of the year, but it sure was one hell of a film and deserved all the recognition regardless. For those wondering will there be blood? Oh yes my friends there will be... |

damn i forgot to review this one over the summer. anyways i watched it in theatres and on DVD and both times its great. I don't know why so many people hate Michael Bay, he is an action director and he does it well. Transformers has some of the most unbelievable special effects i have seen in a long time. its funny, full of action, and the most satisfying summer flick i saw. people of any age can love this film. |

Though Kitano didn't write this one it was a film that was definitely appropriate for him to direct. Kitano is the star in the bad cop role which would later be revisited in Hana-Bi. The movie has perfect pacing and leads up to an ending which was surprising yet very appropriate. It's a great film for Kitano to enter the world as a new hot shot director and actor and set the tone for all future films to come. Good stuff. |

Visitor Q (Bijitâ Q) (2002, R)
wow this movie is above and beyond messed up. though it was still good because it kept me wanting to see where it was going to go. all i kept thinking while watching it was, "wow I can't believe they can do that in a movie!" however this movie is more of a dark comedy and if you take it as such its much more enjoyable. i watched it to be shocked and wow all the rumours were right thank you visitor q. |

The Warriors (1979, R)
Just a beautiful film, it uses comic book transitions brilliantly and the landscape of NYC is the perfect backdrop to a highly entertaining story. All the characters are wonderful and the variety of gangs makes this film so surreal yet based in modern times. It's just a classic crime style street brawl movie which is something rarely seen in today's time. It's hard to classify this one it's such a groundbreaking film in all genres such as crime, action, drama, comic-book, and more. Such the epic cult film and a rare treat to anyone who loves well made cinema. Never gets old even after 10 plus viewings. Having learned of the recent remake I felt I must rewatch my copy and it just is so depressing to see such a brilliant film lowered to the common LA gang film. So do yourself a favor and use the hype of the remake to go out and buy the original it's a film you won't forget. Can you dig it?? |

Wishing Stairs (2004, R)
The movie is overall a very solid horror film the characters are developed well and the overall concept is rather interesting. I just felt the overall idea of the wishing stairs could have been better. The movie ended very creepy, and the main character was truly tormented throughout the film. However, after watching other Korean horror films I thought ti could have been slightly better. Regardless I simply have high standards for Korean films in general, so this one is worth a watch and far better than anything you will see in America. |

Yojimbo (1961, Unrated)
Total Freakin' Classic. This movie is so awesome in so many ways it's no wonder Sergio Leon decided to remake it to kick off his man with no name trilogy (fistful of dollars). The movie is paced perfectly and follows a nice mix of wonderful characters and humour all connected to Toshiro Mifune who is a total one man badass. This is up among Kurosawa's best films ever. Wonderful script, wonderful atmosphere just perfectly executed film. Yojimbo is amazing. |

Sonatine (Sonachine) (1993, R)
sonatine is one of those odd yakuza films you don't see that often. The premise starts out like at typical yakuza film, but it's the middle of the film that stands out. The film follows a small group of yakuza with beat as the boss and they spend a large portion of the film relaxing at a remote house in Okinawa. After a while you even begin to forget why the group is even there until all the violence they were avoiding comes to hit them all at once and leads to a very typical yet appropriate ending to a film of it's nature. Beat just looks like he's having a blast during this movie and it's one that is very interesting and not full of all the typical action and violence yakuza movies tend to be like. |
