Jesus of Nazareth (,  Unrated)
Jesus of Nazareth 5.0 Stars
The most perfect movie about Jesus ever. Robert Powell is AMAZING and what a supporting cast! (Directed by one of my favorites, Franco Zeffirelli)

I really liked this one. I went in with concern about it's violent reputation, but it was acceptable to me. (Meaning no torture or gratuitous stuff.)

Having just read quite a bit about the Crusades lately, I was curious about it's historical accuracy -- and also P.C. element. I was pleased to see it did pretty well on both counts.

Great cast. Orlando Bloom shines (someone I usually think of as just a so-so actor.) He's a good balance of quiet determination and inspiration (you do well when you say so much with your eyes and expression.)

Neeson's part is too small, since he is supreme in general, but I like.

Jeremy Irons and Edward Norton are nice bonuses -- especially Norton's portrayal of the unforgettable lepor king. Amazing how he owned that part playing it completely behind a mask.

I could go on and on, but I hate to reveal the plot -- go out and rent this one!

The Prince of Egypt (1998,  PG)
The Prince of Egypt 4.0 Stars
Better than I thought it would be -- and no PC Egyptian sympathy. Its all about Moses and his people. Highlights: the burning bush and Exodus. Gorgeous score.

I'm still digesting this one. It is low budget and I was immediately worried because the acting seemed so bad, but Kendrick comes into it with some powerful scenes and a surprising range!

He is also the director and co-writer. I was also surprised by the intelligent writing (though there are cliches) and that it was not nearly as contrived as it could have been.

Like I said, some surprisingly powerful scenes (particularly the "death crawl"), originality, range, humor, a strong testimony of Christ, and the kids were good, too.

The negatives: low budget (but you would not know it by the cinematography), some bad acting, some of the dialogue, and the biggest heartbreak -- it's not a true story.

Sadly, the last fact made the movie more of a fairy tale than an inspirational piece, but I still have to recommend it. Christians will particularly love it and most people will likely be moved by it.
