My Top 100 Sci Fi Movies

  1. Hellgato
  2. Sebastian

The best of science fiction. Am I forgetting something, got a suggestion? Drop me a line.

I'm hesitant to add The Prestige here, it's such a great movie and so much more than its minimal sci fi element, I feel it would be unjust. If I had to, probably below Alien.

Notes:

-Original Star Wars trilogy as a whole takes the top spot. Yes, I enjoy ROTJ more than A New Hope.

-Kubrick films 2001 and A Clockwork Orange taken as genreless films rate much, much higher. Im weird with my lists.

-I've always wanted to see THX 1138 but never got around to it. I'll save the last spot for it until I see it.

-Most featured directors: Spielberg (6), Lucas (5), Cameron (4), Zemeckis (4), Carpenter (4), Verhoeven (3), Miller II (3), Gilliam (3).

-This list might have slight changes over time.

Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back (1980,  PG)
Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back 5.0 Stars
Snow speeders vs AT-ATs, "Imperial troops have entered the base". The falcon inside a giant space slug. Yoda, "Do or do not, there is no try". Bobba Fett. Han in carbonite, "I know". Fight with Darth Vader. "I am your father". Lando Calrissian, "They told me they fixed it! Its not my fault!" Cliffhanger ending. Great sequel, great movie.

Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi 4.5 Stars
If you take away the Ewoks this movie is insanely good. Just with the opening sequence in Jabba's yacht its enough but then we have the forest speeders schoooom!, the space battle at the second death star ITS A TRAP! and the climatic battle with Darth Vader and the Emperor LIGHTNING BOLT! Still, lets be fair to the ewoks back when I was a kid I used to love them.

Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope 4.5 Stars
It's the original, the one that started it all with tons of great moments but compared to the other originals, its the "weakest". I like how Darth Vader isn't the top dog in the film and is below the admirals in rank/power.

This was THE best movie for me back in 1991. I just could not get enough of this movie (I even loved the Guns n Roses video, remember that?). What always bothered me was how you knew from all the advertisements that Arnold this time around was the good guy, would have been a nice surprise.

So they borrowed elements from tons of sources, who cares? This movie is just mind blowing. Copied infinite times, never ever forget as you see countless movies overusing the same special effects and same camera work that this was THE movie that brought it all together to create something that just makes you go "whoa".

As great as the original is, I prefer this one. It took the same universe and did a complete 180 on the concept creating one of the best and coolest sci fi action movies ever.

This film is great, after the first JP who didn't want more? Intense action sequences and awesome CGI and sound effects. The girl doing that gymnastic move on the velociraptor frustrates me, what a downer.

I need time to digest this. Worth a second viewing very soon. Overall: fascinating. Just took 2 hours to get me to watch it again. Second viewing: Chaotically confusing, but addictive to understand. I feel like if I tried to write anything more I would end up with 200 pages worth of text so I'll just leave you with this: Go see it.

It's good and even great at times but it is a step down from The Road Warrior. Break a deal spin the wheel. Two men enter one man leaves. MASTERBLASTER! Seems like Road Warrior fans under appreciate this movie more than they should, it's a shame. I wish George Miller would make more sci fi action movies.

Great gritty movie in a sort of post-apocalyptic future. Great car chases with incredible ways of filming speed. The character and universe are great but ultimately this film gets more props for being the precursor to the greatness that is The Road Warrior.
