The Dark Knight (2008,  PG-13)
The Dark Knight
I really enjoyed this, and even though I didn't think it was a whole lot better than Batman begins (which I also loved), I think certain performances made the difference. Heath Ledger, yes, and also Aaron Eckhart as Harvey Dent. I seem to like that guy in every movie he does.

I think Christian Bale plays a very good Bruce Wayne, but as Batman, he was overshadowed by the villains in this one. Also, his Bat-voice really annoys me!

This movie was surrounded in hype, and while it more than lived up to that hype, I don't think it deserves to be rated all time #1 movie on the IMDB.

I'm looking forward to the next installment, although I had hoped that we'd have been given more of a conclusion to the character of The Joker. He could be back, but I can't imagine another actor channeling the character in such a way again. Then again, it was said that nobody could ever again play the character after Jack, and while their interpretations of The Joker were worlds apart, Heath more than fulfilled that task.

Quantum of Solace (2008,  PG-13)
Quantum of Solace
Having enjoyed Casino Royale immensely, maybe I was expecting a bit too much from this installment of the Bond franchise, but I have to say Quantum of Solace fell a bit flat for me.

Nothing about this movie stood out as being special or memorable. The plot was slow and convoluted and instantly forgettable - dare I say it, a bit like the Bond girls featured here. Craig puts in a strong performance, but here, rather than bearing the hallmarks of Bond, he could be any modern day action hero - intent on revenge, and prepared to do just about anything to get what he wants. In this movie, he's lost any of the charm and charisma thats always been associated with Bond. The action scenes were the best thing about the movie, but then, every modern day movie of this type has action sequences of the same calibre.

Overall, I think the Bond franchise has started borrowing a little too heavily from the Bourne, and has lost a little of its magic in the process.

Rachel Getting Married (2008,  R)
Rachel Getting Married
I was disappointed by this movie as I it had a lot of potential, but ultimately failed to deliver. The movie has a strong storyline at its core, and delivers some great performances, but these are overshadowed in parts by a plot which meanders towards the unnecessary from time to time. Nevertheless, I was impressed by Anne Hathaway's performance as the troubled Kym. It's the first time I've seen her play a character of any substance, and she does a good job here.
4
The Other Boleyn Girl (2008,  PG-13)
The Other Boleyn Girl
This movie is far less substantial than the book of the same name, and not a faithful visual companion to it, but nevertheless, it is a good movie in its own right. It is helpful to have a background knowledge of Tudor history, and the court of King Henry VIII before watching the movie, as it tends to skim over some pretty important events. The dismissal of Katherine of Aragon from court, the annulment of her marriage to Henry, and subsequent break from the Catholic Church is pretty much a blink and you'll miss it scene, believe it or not!

This is visually stunning, though , and the costumes are fabulous. Natalie Portman gives an amazing performance as Anne Boleyn, while Johansson is also impressive as Mary. Even though this was meant to be Mary's story, I felt that the focus was almost entirely on Anne. Mary was pushed into the background, not only as 'The other Boleyn Girl', but also by Portman's performance. Also, I didn't warm to the character of Mary Boleyn at all as I did while reading the book. Philippa Gregory's writing lends itself to great character study, while this movie, I felt, skimped a bit.
5
Bride Wars (2009,  PG)
6
El Orfanato (The Orphanage) (2007,  R)
El Orfanato (The Orphanage)
This was a big letdown for me, especially since I had looked forward to seeing it for months, and I had been told it was terrifying. Its not. A little spooky at best, but thats about it. The story is pretty straightforward, with not many twists, and a fairly conventional outcome. The ending was such a letdown, and left me wondering if there was more to come, as surely this couldn't be it?! Maybe there was something lost in the translation here, but this did absolutely nothing to entertain me.
7
Twilight (2008,  PG-13)
Twilight
I enjoyed this so much more than I was expecting to!

Robert Pattinson is a wonder as Edward, and such a perfect casting of that character leaves me wondering why some others were so obviously miscast - namely Rosalie. Nikki Reed is all wrong as that character.

The movie would have been better with a different director, and I am glad that's the case for New Moon. Some of the action sequences were cringeworthy, and the special effects failed.

Overall though, this was immensely enjoyable. Especially every time Edward walked on screen. A lot of people have complained about the chemistry between Edward and Bella, but I felt that the actors portrayed that just as it should have been.

I'm a bit disappointed that the Volturi flashbacks were left out of this, although maybe that was intentional. I was pleased with the meadow scene, which was my favourite in the book, and nicely done here.
Roll on New Moon!

Step Brothers (2008,  R)
Step Brothers
This isn't quite up there with Ferrell's best comedies - for me, Anchorman and Blades of Glory - but it is a bundle of fun, nontheless. Plenty of laugh out loud moments. The two leads work well together, and are pretty hilarious as The forty year olds who never grew up.

Some great one liners in this - 'Your voice is a combination of Fergie's and Jesus' will make you laugh till you cry!

Definitely one to watch if you're in the mood for some laughs!
9
The Lovely Bones (2009,  Unrated)
10
The Strangers (2008,  R)
The Strangers
I knew this would be my kind of thing as soon as I saw the poster for it. Then I watched the trailer, and was sold! This seems to be getting quite a few bad reviews, but I have to say I really enjoyed it. I don't like horror films that are gratuitously violent, and thankfully this was pretty low on the gore factor. What you get instead is a movie which draws heavily on horror films from times past (definite nods to The Texas Chainsaw Massacre), and is pretty spooky, dark and very creepy in general. In some places the movie drags, and it is predictable in parts (most horrors are nowadays as for the most part, we've seen it all before) - all the same, this contained more than one jumpy moment! The use of sound and music is very good here, and definitely makes the viewer feel uneasy. The masks are very sinister, and frightened me from start to finish. And I have to say, I loved the ending!

I will say that to anyone who is freaked out by being home alone or finds themselves home alone a lot, then this might not be the one for you. If on the other hand, you feel like this, but still want a good fright, then check this out!

A back story to the three 'Strangers' would be a good idea. Maybe that will come in the sequel.
11
Angels & Demons (2009,  PG-13)
Angels & Demons
Beautiful scenery, but apart from that, this movie didn't really do much for me. A little long, with convoluted dialogue and a storyline which was predictable and didn't really hold my interest, as matters concerning religion often don't!
12
The Kite Runner (2008,  PG-13)
13
Valkyrie (2008,  PG-13)
Valkyrie
Disappointing. This was slow-moving and boring. What could have been a suspenseful and powerful movie just fell flat. Even though WWII is a great interest of mine, and I usually really enjoy movies dealing with that period in history, this failed to hold my interest at all. Tom Cruise was pretty ridiculous in the role. I couldn't take him seriously.

The pace picks up in the last half hour, but by then , for me , it was too late to salvage anything from this. If you really must see it, wait for the DVD.
14
Atonement (2007,  R)
Atonement
What a wonderful movie. This kept me enthralled right from beginning till end. Fantastic pace, great cinematography and wonderful use of music. The scene at Dunkirk was so well done, and really moved me. Saoirse Ronan was wonderful as Briony, and more than deserved her Oscar nomination. Also, this movie surprised me - I was not expecting that ending, and yes, it made me cry!
15
Hippie Hippie Shake (2010,  R)
16
Iron Man (2008,  PG-13)
Iron Man
I know the rest of the world loved it, but this wasn't my kind of movie AT ALL. Major disappointment, with a silly predictable plotline and boring characters. The two stars are for Robert Downey Jnr alone!
17
Låt den Rätte Komma In (Let the Right One in) (2008,  R)
Låt den Rätte Komma In (Let the Right One in)
More Vampires! I've read wonderful reviews of this. I heard its already getting a big Hollywood remake, but I will watch the original first. From what I've seen in the trailer, it all looks a bit spooky, but I've heard its quite violent too.
18
Mirrors (2008,  R)
Mirrors
Tripe.

The best of the movie is in the trailer, although there is one pretty gory death scene (the bath scene) which is worth seeing if you're a fan of the gore!

I haven't seen the original, so while I can't really compare, I will say that surely it can't be as bad as this. I held out some hope for this one, and for a while, the storyline did seem to be picking up, but then it just fell flat on its face again.

Not many scares at all. I didn't jump once. And I am generally very jumpy. Semi-interesting 'twist' at the end of the movie, although anyone would see it coming a mile off!

I say avoid.

Dammit Kiefer, you can do better than this!
19
The Black Balloon (2008,  PG-13)
20
My Sister's Keeper (2009,  PG-13)
My Sister's Keeper
The book made me cry, but I've heard they've changed the ending for the movie, which will probably make it all 'Happy Hollywood'.
21
American Teen (2008,  PG-13)
22
[Rec] (2007,  R)
23
W. (2008,  PG-13)
W.
Dull, dull, dull! The script is tired and uninspired. Stone didn't put a lot into this at all. Josh Brolin on the other hand, is wonderful as W. He makes the most of the script he's been given.

But overall you're left with the impression that things could have been a whole lot better here.
24
Hunger (2009,  Unrated)
25
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (2008,  PG-13)
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
I loved the trailer, and I have high hopes for this one!
26
Sunshine Cleaning (2009,  R)
27
Changeling (2008,  R)
28
The Ugly Truth (2009,  R)
The Ugly Truth
Pretty damn poor, all things considered! I enjoy rom com's when they're genuinely sweet, funny, and when the two leads have real chemistry going on, but there wasn't much of that happening here. Gerard Butler is an awful actor, and totally unsuited to the 'lead male in a romantic comedy' role. I don't know how on earth he keeps on getting these parts, or why some women seem to find him so attractive. Just ugh! I didn't get many laughs at all from this one, and I thought the ending was so cheesy and cringeworthy, it hurt.

I like Heigl. She was fabulous in Knocked Up, and she did her best in the godawful '27 dresses', but this was just a step too far.

Avoid, I say!
29
The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian (2008,  PG)
The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian
While I didn't enjoy Prince Caspian as much as The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe, it still provided great entertainment. This is quite a bit darker than its predecessor , with battle upon battle, and not much of the magic and wonder of Narnia....until that is, Aslan shows up.

My God, Aslan is so epic. I love him! He's only in the movie for all of fifteen minutes, but he totally steals the show. The scene where he calls on the elements to defeat the enemies of Narnia is pretty special.

Prince Caspian himself is a bit annoying. Was he that much of a wuss in the books? I can't recall.

The Reader (2008,  R)
31
2012 (2009,  PG-13)
32
Terminator Salvation (2009,  PG-13)
Terminator Salvation
Disappointing. This didn't work for me on a lot of levels. I could start off by criticising Bale, who just didn't work for me as John Connor, and who now seems to be using his (very annoying) Batman voice in every role he does, but what's the point in being overly critical of him - it's not like he was given great material to work with! I didn't connect with the character of John Connor at all, which surely affected my viewing of the movie. The action sequences are there in number, but are overlong, and frankly downright boring! The highlight of the movie was Sam Worthington's performance. He's surely one to watch! I guess they are making a follow up to this, but I think I'll wait for the DVD next time!

Veronika Decides to Die (2009,  R)
34
New Moon (,  Unrated)
35
Slumdog Millionaire (2008,  R)
Slumdog Millionaire
Well, I've been reading such wonderful reviews of this movie that I have to go and see what all the fuss is about!
36
Confessions of a Shopaholic (2009,  PG)
Confessions of a Shopaholic
Predictable chick flick in which fashion is everything, and even the fashion is a little banal. While the film contains some good one liners, and Isla Fisher has good comic timing, and is genuinely funny, the storyline is very unremarkable and nothing that we haven't seen dozens of times before. The leading male is from the Hugh Grant school of acting, and didn't appeal to me at all. Yawn.
37
(500) Days of Summer (2009,  PG-13)
38
The Wrestler (2008,  R)
The Wrestler
Powerful and touching performance from Rourke in a movie which otherwise did not grip me possibly as it should have done. While it was a somewhat entertaining movie, I found it wholly predictable, and also found the improv camera-work, which finds the movie filmed in documentary style, off-putting. Maybe this was used to convey the struggle of Rourke's character through his shambled life, but it didn't work for me.

Shutter Island (2010,  Unrated)
40
Whatever Works (2009,  PG-13)
41
The Haunting in Connecticut (2009,  PG-13)
42
The Children (2008,  R)
43
Grey Gardens (2009,  Unrated)
Grey Gardens
Thoroughly enjoyed this. Funny, touching and moving, it is a wonderful portrait of the reclusive Bouvier Beale's. Outstanding performances from Lange and Barrymore. You can tell that Drew Barrymore put her heart and soul into this character. It's her best role in a long time.

Even if you have no background information on the family or Grey Gardens, this will hold its own, and is totally worth a watch.

The Last House on the Left (2009,  R)

The September Issue (2009,  PG-13)
The September Issue
The Devil Wears....Fur.....

Anna Wintour's fur obsession was the only downside to this documentary which takes us into the privileged world of fashion and provides a fascinating insight into the behind the scenes workings of Vogue magazine's famous 'September Issue'. The documentary has an interesting cast of characters, some of whom are very self-involved. This makes for some hilarious soundbites - 'September is the January in fashion' , for example, and 'the jacket is the new coat'. Amazing!

I am a big fan of fashion, so I found all of this very entertaining. The glamour and excess of the fashion shoots - Raquel Zimmerman shot by David Sims at Versailles is wonderfully glamorous - and of course, this is a unparalleled glimpse into the world of Wintour, who is capable of more than a few soundbites of her own. In one scene she states of Jennifer Garner that she 'needs to be fixed. She looks pregnant'.

As fascinating as Wintour is, for me, Creative Director Grace Coddington was the star of the show, and a refreshing contrast to the aloof Wintour. Coddington is the only person at Vogue, it seems, ready to defy Wintour, and this definitely makes for interesting watching. A must see for Fashion fans!
50
Coco avant Chanel (Coco Before Chanel) (2009,  PG-13)
51
Adventureland (2009,  R)
Adventureland
Enjoyable coming-of-age tale set and soundtracked in the eighties. It's from the same people that brought us Superbad, so I expected a laugh out loud comedy, but, although this does have it's funny moments, it also has serious undertones. The movie is well cast, with some very interesting and highly entertaining characters. The leading role was made for Michael Cera, although from a personal point of view I'm glad another actor was cast in the part of James. Jesse Eisenberg does a good job here, as does Kristen Stewart as his love interest Em.
52
Orphan (2009,  R)
Orphan
Props to Isabelle Fuhrman, who is great as the genuinely creepy Esther in this tense thriller. Personally, I really enjoyed it. If the movie had been in my hands, I would have made some changes to the storyline, and the ending, but overall it kept me entertained and the performances were good all round. People say that you'll never guess what Esther's secret is, but I partly did - a whole ten minutes after first seeing her. I hate when I do that! As a whole, the movie isn't very scary, but then I'm not easily scared. Esther is very sinister, though, and the movie is worth checking out for her alone. Creepy little girl......

Sorority Row (2009,  R)

Paranormal Activity (2009,  R)
Paranormal Activity
I'm a total horror movie freak and people are saying this is the scariest movie they've ever seen. Can't wait to see it! Hope it scares the crap outta me! haha!
57
Gigantic (2009,  R)
Gigantic
Offbeat indie romance - this won't appeal to everyone, but I truly enjoyed it. The movie, which centers around a mattress salesman and his quest to adopt a Chinese baby, is slow-moving in parts, but laugh out loud funny in others. John Goodman offers comic relief here, while strong performances by Dano and Deschanel make this a lot more enjoyable than it might have been in less experienced hands. Deschanel, is, after all, the queen of kook. I found the characters to be very sweet and endearing, although there are some dark undertones to proceedings. Well worth a watch for fans of quirky indie.
