The Dark Knight (2008, PG-13)
I really enjoyed this, and even though I didn't think it was a whole lot better than Batman begins (which I also loved), I think certain performances made the difference. Heath Ledger, yes, and also Aaron Eckhart as Harvey Dent. I seem to like that guy in every movie he does. |

Quantum of Solace (2008, PG-13)
Having enjoyed Casino Royale immensely, maybe I was expecting a bit too much from this installment of the Bond franchise, but I have to say Quantum of Solace fell a bit flat for me. |

Rachel Getting Married (2008, R)
I was disappointed by this movie as I it had a lot of potential, but ultimately failed to deliver. The movie has a strong storyline at its core, and delivers some great performances, but these are overshadowed in parts by a plot which meanders towards the unnecessary from time to time. Nevertheless, I was impressed by Anne Hathaway's performance as the troubled Kym. It's the first time I've seen her play a character of any substance, and she does a good job here. |

The Other Boleyn Girl (2008, PG-13)
This movie is far less substantial than the book of the same name, and not a faithful visual companion to it, but nevertheless, it is a good movie in its own right. It is helpful to have a background knowledge of Tudor history, and the court of King Henry VIII before watching the movie, as it tends to skim over some pretty important events. The dismissal of Katherine of Aragon from court, the annulment of her marriage to Henry, and subsequent break from the Catholic Church is pretty much a blink and you'll miss it scene, believe it or not! |

Bride Wars (2009, PG) |

El Orfanato (The Orphanage) (2007, R)
This was a big letdown for me, especially since I had looked forward to seeing it for months, and I had been told it was terrifying. Its not. A little spooky at best, but thats about it. The story is pretty straightforward, with not many twists, and a fairly conventional outcome. The ending was such a letdown, and left me wondering if there was more to come, as surely this couldn't be it?! Maybe there was something lost in the translation here, but this did absolutely nothing to entertain me. |

Twilight (2008, PG-13)
I enjoyed this so much more than I was expecting to! |

| 8 |
Step Brothers (2008, R)
This isn't quite up there with Ferrell's best comedies - for me, Anchorman and Blades of Glory - but it is a bundle of fun, nontheless. Plenty of laugh out loud moments. The two leads work well together, and are pretty hilarious as The forty year olds who never grew up. |

The Lovely Bones (2009, Unrated) |

| 10 |
The Strangers (2008, R)
I knew this would be my kind of thing as soon as I saw the poster for it. Then I watched the trailer, and was sold! This seems to be getting quite a few bad reviews, but I have to say I really enjoyed it. I don't like horror films that are gratuitously violent, and thankfully this was pretty low on the gore factor. What you get instead is a movie which draws heavily on horror films from times past (definite nods to The Texas Chainsaw Massacre), and is pretty spooky, dark and very creepy in general. In some places the movie drags, and it is predictable in parts (most horrors are nowadays as for the most part, we've seen it all before) - all the same, this contained more than one jumpy moment! The use of sound and music is very good here, and definitely makes the viewer feel uneasy. The masks are very sinister, and frightened me from start to finish. And I have to say, I loved the ending! |

The Kite Runner (2008, PG-13) |

Valkyrie (2008, PG-13)
Disappointing. This was slow-moving and boring. What could have been a suspenseful and powerful movie just fell flat. Even though WWII is a great interest of mine, and I usually really enjoy movies dealing with that period in history, this failed to hold my interest at all. Tom Cruise was pretty ridiculous in the role. I couldn't take him seriously. |

Atonement (2007, R)
What a wonderful movie. This kept me enthralled right from beginning till end. Fantastic pace, great cinematography and wonderful use of music. The scene at Dunkirk was so well done, and really moved me. Saoirse Ronan was wonderful as Briony, and more than deserved her Oscar nomination. Also, this movie surprised me - I was not expecting that ending, and yes, it made me cry! |

The Ugly Truth (2009, R)
Pretty damn poor, all things considered! I enjoy rom com's when they're genuinely sweet, funny, and when the two leads have real chemistry going on, but there wasn't much of that happening here. Gerard Butler is an awful actor, and totally unsuited to the 'lead male in a romantic comedy' role. I don't know how on earth he keeps on getting these parts, or why some women seem to find him so attractive. Just ugh! I didn't get many laughs at all from this one, and I thought the ending was so cheesy and cringeworthy, it hurt. |

The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian (2008, PG)
While I didn't enjoy Prince Caspian as much as The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe, it still provided great entertainment. This is quite a bit darker than its predecessor , with battle upon battle, and not much of the magic and wonder of Narnia....until that is, Aslan shows up. |

Terminator Salvation (2009, PG-13)
Disappointing. This didn't work for me on a lot of levels. I could start off by criticising Bale, who just didn't work for me as John Connor, and who now seems to be using his (very annoying) Batman voice in every role he does, but what's the point in being overly critical of him - it's not like he was given great material to work with! I didn't connect with the character of John Connor at all, which surely affected my viewing of the movie. The action sequences are there in number, but are overlong, and frankly downright boring! The highlight of the movie was Sam Worthington's performance. He's surely one to watch! I guess they are making a follow up to this, but I think I'll wait for the DVD next time! |

Confessions of a Shopaholic (2009, PG)
Predictable chick flick in which fashion is everything, and even the fashion is a little banal. While the film contains some good one liners, and Isla Fisher has good comic timing, and is genuinely funny, the storyline is very unremarkable and nothing that we haven't seen dozens of times before. The leading male is from the Hugh Grant school of acting, and didn't appeal to me at all. Yawn. |

The Wrestler (2008, R)
Powerful and touching performance from Rourke in a movie which otherwise did not grip me possibly as it should have done. While it was a somewhat entertaining movie, I found it wholly predictable, and also found the improv camera-work, which finds the movie filmed in documentary style, off-putting. Maybe this was used to convey the struggle of Rourke's character through his shambled life, but it didn't work for me. |

Grey Gardens (2009, Unrated)
Thoroughly enjoyed this. Funny, touching and moving, it is a wonderful portrait of the reclusive Bouvier Beale's. Outstanding performances from Lange and Barrymore. You can tell that Drew Barrymore put her heart and soul into this character. It's her best role in a long time. |

Adventureland (2009, R)
Enjoyable coming-of-age tale set and soundtracked in the eighties. It's from the same people that brought us Superbad, so I expected a laugh out loud comedy, but, although this does have it's funny moments, it also has serious undertones. The movie is well cast, with some very interesting and highly entertaining characters. The leading role was made for Michael Cera, although from a personal point of view I'm glad another actor was cast in the part of James. Jesse Eisenberg does a good job here, as does Kristen Stewart as his love interest Em. |

Orphan (2009, R)
Props to Isabelle Fuhrman, who is great as the genuinely creepy Esther in this tense thriller. Personally, I really enjoyed it. If the movie had been in my hands, I would have made some changes to the storyline, and the ending, but overall it kept me entertained and the performances were good all round. People say that you'll never guess what Esther's secret is, but I partly did - a whole ten minutes after first seeing her. I hate when I do that! As a whole, the movie isn't very scary, but then I'm not easily scared. Esther is very sinister, though, and the movie is worth checking out for her alone. Creepy little girl...... |

Gigantic (2009, R)
Offbeat indie romance - this won't appeal to everyone, but I truly enjoyed it. The movie, which centers around a mattress salesman and his quest to adopt a Chinese baby, is slow-moving in parts, but laugh out loud funny in others. John Goodman offers comic relief here, while strong performances by Dano and Deschanel make this a lot more enjoyable than it might have been in less experienced hands. Deschanel, is, after all, the queen of kook. I found the characters to be very sweet and endearing, although there are some dark undertones to proceedings. Well worth a watch for fans of quirky indie. |
