Obscure Goodies
These are some great movies that are not so well known, and if they are they are quirky enough to make this list as 'obscure goodies.' These are gems in my view. :)

The Republic of Love (2004, Unrated)
This movie by Deepah Mehta is a delightful little romance with some beautiful indian music in a modern setting, adding some spice to the romance. It is idealistic in its spark, which makes it a little unbelievable, but stands in contrast to the rest of the movie which shows that such a love is rare and special and makes it charming. A story of true love, and the resistance of it because of fear. A subtle analysis of love with a unique and somewhat difficult background for it that only makes it more dear. The characters were fairly well developed, you liked them :) Although, I also confused a couple of the characters at first, they look similar, and the choppy but affective style of photography added to the confusion of those two characters, but that changed pretty quickly as i came to understand the plot. |

Camilla (1994, PG-13)
An endearing and humourous tale about two ladies, one old lady with wonderful stories to tell and one younge lady in search of herself, who quickly take to eachother as friends because of their love for hearing and playing music. They decide to 'run away' together from overbearing men to find themselves in a little adventure and an exciting fight for their place as musicians, as women, for love and for a future. |

Equus (1977, R)
Not for everyone! Very dramatic and definately influenced by Freud's famous 'Case Study of Hans', this fim is dealing with the perverse and mentally unsound, delving into a good example of how one's mind may realistically be disillusioned and how ones drives can be funneled into inappropriate passions. |

Good Night, And Good Luck (2005, PG)
An excellent film about the evolution of television, the struggle of journalism regarding fact and fiction, the affects of a single group of individuals with the tool of television, the gift of free speech and the guts to use them. An excellently stylized and written piece. Not for those seeking glamour or action but definately thrilling for those with an interest in social politics, social philosophy and journalism. |

The House of Mirth (2000, PG)
Amazingly well acted, fascinatingly intricate emotionally! Moving and tragic! A somewhat lengthy example of the tragic results of womanization, the squelching pain of the social class values of the time period and the deceitfullness of humanity. This woman is solely vicitimized and the pain of it all is that it could have happened in that day and age. This movie served me once at a time in my life when I needed this empathy, but may seem long and tedious to others looking for entertainment. |

I Shot Andy Warhol (1996, R)
This movie is not so much about Andy Warhol as about Valerie Solanas, a woman who, moved by the victimizing circumstances of her upbringing (which they don't say too much about) and of her confrontation with finding herself without much money she is entering a cold world outside of her education that inhibits women from various equalities with men. She stumbles downhill wearing her rebellion of an oppressive society amidst misfits of which even she does not fit. Her voice was not heard when she was alive, but her writings are now an often circulated feminist material. |

The Majestic (2001, PG)
Loved this!! Love the time period. the plot is super interesting about a screenwriter who gets into an accident and loses his memory only to find himself in a town where everyone thinks he is LUKE who has been gone for 9 years. Is he Luke? Meanwhile there is a historical illusion regarding how screenwriters were attached by government authority regarding their communist views. Very intersting and a charming tale! :) |

In Bruges (2008, R)
Some people like it, some people don't. I found it to be a very unique idea for a film!! This is what impressed me the most about it. The second impression was the setting, nature of filming and environment created within the film. The contrast of a beautiful setting for a brutal plot was good tension. The 2 main characters were well written as appealing and funny. They were far too 'lovable' for their roles, but in so, you recognize the duality of the individual very clearly. |

Wow! An intensely real fim! The relationships and revealing tensions and emotions are so real, you will be surprised a man wrote it! Jack Black does present a man's perspective in this drama with humour but also with utter honesty. My bf and i came to understand eachother better through this film! This movie is ripe with symbolism and is a journey of where we put our purpose as well as the nature of relationships. You must have guts to face some of the very open dialogue and the fears presented. It was refreshing to see a film so open about the melancholia of life and how broken people are, while leaving the end open and with enough hope that you can create it in your own minds eye. The people in this film seem like your own brothers and sisters! Beautifully & impressively revealing!! But, I didn't buy it because it was not something i would watch very often. Not a feel good film, but fantastic to see! |

Flirting (1990, R)
Different than i expected. I liked it!! Quite a bit, in fact. More of a drama and romance than a comedy, while maintaining enough teenage excitement. The main characters are attracted by their intelligence and recognition of the overinhibitions of british society. Well written, as if it was first a novel. |
