The Fog (1979,  R)
The Fog
Boring. As soon as I saw pirates emerge out of the fog like 15 minutes into the movie, I was like wah wah wahhh. I'm sorry, but ghost-pirates: NOT SCARY. Surprisingly, this is on a lot of top horror movie lists, but I say pass it up.
6
The Strangers (2008,  R)
The Strangers
The first 30 minutes of this movie: scary as SHIT. Especially the first time you see one of the masked people. The rest of it: decent, but not worth writing home about. Curious to find out what was included in the unrated...
7
Shivers (They Came from Within) (The Parasite Murders) (1975,  R)
Shivers (They Came from Within) (The Parasite Murders)
Glad this is finally out on dvd because I've wanted to see it since forever. Not as amazing as I'd hyped it up in my head, but definite must-see 1970s horror Cronenberg.
8
In the Mouth of Madness (1995,  R)
9
House On Haunted Hill (1959,  Unrated)
10
The Eye (Gin gwai) (2002,  R)
The Eye (Gin gwai)
So spooky and good and spooky and good.
11
Teeth (2007,  R)
Teeth
Smart and gory and fun and super well-done.
12
Friday the 13th Part 2 (1981,  R)
Friday the 13th Part 2
Fairly unremarkable sequel. Keep wondering when the hockey mask gets busted out...
13
Friday the 13th (1980,  R)
Friday the 13th
Friday the 13th is classic slasher, and it has both the funniest and also creepiest ending. Omg. Ha ha ha. Laughing just thinking about it. Plus, it allows you to walk around for days going CHI CHI CHI CHI HA HA HA HA (like the score). And finally, you get to see a ridiculously young Kevin Bacon prance around, looking like somebody Naired every square inch of hair off his body. Good fun.
14
Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer (1986,  NC-17)
15
Cursed (2004,  PG-13)
16
The Eye (2008,  PG-13)
The Eye
Wow. So so so so bad. If I was like the Incredible Hulk of horror films, I would right now be turning green and bulging out of my shirt with furious anger at having my time wasted like this. GO RENT THE ORIGINAL. Really. THAT is a good and creepy flick that will scare your SOCKS off. You can read me bitch about this movie more HERE. SO ANGRY!
17
The Thing (1982,  R)
The Thing
This movie rocks--fantastic old-school special fx that will FREAK YOU OUT. And spooky to boot. A definite must-see for the holiday season.
18
The Bad Seed (1956,  Unrated)
The Bad Seed
This felt really old and really slow and the acting was overdone. And yet somehow the little girl managed to be super-creepy and evil. And the way they organized some of the scenes was brilliant. It's on a lot of people's Top 50 horror flicks, so worth checking out.
19
Homicidal (1961,  Unrated)
Homicidal
Wow. Ugliest male lead ever. And yet this movie was weirdly creepy in the homicidal scenes. The rest of it was kind of goofbally and slow. And the lead--did I mention how ugly he was? He also had the most irritating speech mannerisms as well.
20
Salem's Lot (1979,  PG)
Salem's Lot
Made it up til the last 20 minutes of the movie, and then the dvd stopped working. =P
21
El Orfanato (The Orphanage) (2007,  R)
El Orfanato (The Orphanage)
Holy shit. A MUST MUST see this season.
22
Carnival of Souls (1962,  Unrated)
Carnival of Souls
Love this movie. Kind of slow and meandering throughout most of it, but in its creepy moments it's REALLY good--it actually feels years ahead of its time in these moments. Has a good ending as well. I recommend this Halloween season.
