Michael Jackson's This Is It (2009,  PG)
Michael Jackson's This Is It
Amazing movie, much more than I expected.

Theme 1 is Jackson of course. Still has the dance moves and innate musical talent as show in the rehearsals (especially the interactions with the backup band members). Probably didn't have the voice any more, but still definitely had the dance moves and rhythm.

Part 2 - About SHOW BUSINESS - The Director, Kenny Ortega, was a master and managing the talent and the production details. Stunts, pyrotechnics, dancers, musicians, stage show, etc. - all under guidance and a top quality production.

The most surprising thing is that Jackson looked his normal weird self, but yet not what you expected after the post-death media reports about his condition. Didn't look any more or less frail than the last 15 years or so. Definitely seemed up to the task for the concert series (at least the first X number of show of the 50 scheduled).

RIP.

WALL-E (2008,  G)
3
Inglourious Basterds (2009,  R)
Inglourious Basterds
Classic Tarentino. Dialogue and character development at its finest. Plot was entertaining, but ultimately irrelevant.

SPOILER - loved that they said FU to true history and killed Hitler and all the Nazis...

The screenplay and all its glorious violence...Hollywood's master back at it!
4
Public Enemies (2009,  R)
Public Enemies
Good Michael Mann flick...action packed...little character development (good)...

This is an action movie about BANK ROBBERS and lives up to the billing...

The usual Mann thriller/action with over the top shootout scenes and acoustics to match...

Saw at the Orpheum Theatre in Madison, which gave it an extra historical twist.
5
Vicky Cristina Barcelona (2008,  PG-13)
Vicky Cristina Barcelona
Good movie...loved the setting...been to that part of the world...

Makes me LONG for the Euro lifestyle...

Good acting, good plot...non-Hollywood ending...
6
A Man for All Seasons (1966,  G)
A Man for All Seasons
Good movie...great acting...definitely "dated" as a 60's movie when you see in now...

You could tell it was derived from a play with some of the over the top dialogue...

But overall a very good movie...
7
Dr. Strangelove Or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (1964,  PG)
Dr. Strangelove Or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb
Very good movie...Sellers was amazing playing the three different roles...

So many subtle jokes that were very forward looking and set the stage for the anti-Military Industrial complex revolt of the late 60's that Ike warned about...

"We can not have a mineshaft gap!"...classic
8
Paris Je T'aime (2007,  R)
Paris Je T'aime
Fun movie to watch for those that have been to Paris...a really intimate stroll through the scenery...

Colors are rich...sound quality is good...

It was interesting that most of the short stories take place at night, or in the dawn...showing a less crowded, more intimate side of Paris...

Lovely...
9
Milk (2008,  R)
Milk
Very good movie...Penn was amazing, as usual...

Well shot and paced...it was interesting to see the epilogue...so many of the characters went on to accomplish great things afterward...

Van Sant told this story in a very conventional way and got very conventional emotional reactions from his audience...that is quite a feat considering the controversial subject matter...well done...
10
Frost/Nixon (2008,  R)
Frost/Nixon
Supremely well acted...Langella was great...Sheen was very underrated as well and should have gotten best-supporting nomination...

A testament to the film is that the outcome will well known, but they were still able to craft an exhilarating and suspenseful drama out of it...
11
Revolutionary Road (2008,  R)
Revolutionary Road
Good, but not as good as I had hoped for...I liked that time-period aspect to it...but it wasn't very uplifting! (I say that as a true blue married-with-kids suburbanite though!)

Acting was good...just seemed to be missing the "it" that tied it all together and would have taken it to the next level...
12
Atonement (2007,  R)
Atonement
Very good movie...good acting, especially the younger Briony actress...

Got to see yet another often unseen side of WWII with the consequences of the German invasion of France...those scenes of devastation in Dunkirk were mesmerizing...

The sex scene in the library was incredibly erotic without showing a single frame of nudity...hmm...
13
El Laberinto del Fauno (Pan's Labyrinth) (2006,  R)
El Laberinto del Fauno (Pan's Labyrinth)
Strange movie, yet very good...

A topic not usually explored in Hollywood...fascism in Spain...
14
The Reader (2008,  R)
The Reader
Good movie...good acting...

A side of WWII that you rarely see...the aftermath...
15
The Kite Runner (2008,  PG-13)
The Kite Runner
Very good movie...good acting by the child actors...

Got a good understanding of life in a far away place...and tribal allegiances...
16
The Great Debaters (2007,  PG-13)
The Great Debaters
Good movie...good cast...

Lacked the "it" factor though to make it a great movie...

Once again, Denzel playing an "angry" character...
17
Gran Torino (2009,  R)
Gran Torino
Good movie...just Clint being Clint...the rest is window dressing...

Predictable ending knocks it down a 1/2 star...
18
The Wrestler (2008,  R)
The Wrestler
Very good movie...it IS the Mickey Rourke story...

Well acted...great soundtrack ;)
19
Sunset Boulevard (Sunset Blvd.) (1950,  Unrated)
Sunset Boulevard (Sunset Blvd.)
Good movie...I'm a sucker for FILM NOIR style...

There is something special in seeing an old Hollywood movie that's about an EVEN OLDER Hollywood time...
20
Slumdog Millionaire (2008,  R)
Slumdog Millionaire
Great movie...finally an original idea from Hollywood (well from England anyway...)

Not totally believable, and I don't think it is SUPPOSED to be totally believable...more of a fairy-tale...

But that is the whole POINT of the movie...

In the mean-time you get a good picture painted of an emerging country trying to dig itself out of the 3rd world slums, while still dealing with a societal caste system.

Well done...
21
Doubt (2008,  PG-13)
Doubt
Good movie...could definitely tell it was derived from a play...

Was just too depressing to be rated much higher...
22
One Night at McCool's (2001,  R)
One Night at McCool's
Lame...some intrigue with the film noir style, but was too over-the-top with the action and plot sequences,,,
23
Apocalypto (2006,  R)
Apocalypto
Good movie...

Great action scenes and painted a good picture of ancient times in a place that is not very familiar to most audiences...
24
Eastern Promises (2007,  R)
Eastern Promises
GREAT movie... subtle at times...strikingly violent at times...

The danger points are subtly revealed to both the characters and the audience...
25
Alpha Dog (2007,  R)
Alpha Dog
Not a bad movie...good representation of "lost youth" formatted for today's generation...

JT does a pretty decent acting job...not bad at all...
26
Gone Baby Gone (2007,  R)
Gone Baby Gone
Good thriller...good acting by the "other" Afleck...

Too predictable of an ending to be rated any higher...
27
Marie Antoinette (2006,  PG-13)
Marie Antoinette
Interesting stylistic take on the era and the woman...

Being from the generation that appreciated the musical score (and from just having visited Versailles before watching this), I might have this film rated higher than others...

But, that not withstanding, I still thought it was good...and a change of pace from the usual drab-drawn-out pace of period pieces like this...
28
Superbad (2007,  R)
Superbad
Funny...watched on a plane ride to Paris...
29
Knocked Up (2007,  R)
Knocked Up
Funny...could have been funnier yet, but went for the "romantic comedy" audience for more box office sales...

Still...not bad though...
30
Into the Wild (2007,  R)
Into the Wild
Very good...a strange character, but a really good job developing his character and the plot...

He was a smart kid, but didn't obey a very easy common sense rule in that you don't go against Mother Nature without consequences...sometimes fatal...
31
Before the Devil Knows You're Dead (2007,  R)
Before the Devil Knows You're Dead
Decent movie...love Phillip Seymour Hoffman, but this was a pretty depressing role...
32
The Other Boleyn Girl (2008,  PG-13)
The Other Boleyn Girl
Just so-so...interesting time period piece (I've been to the Tower of London, so I had some personal interest)...

Not enough character development...

Natalie Portman was awful...
33
Notes on a Scandal (2006,  R)
Notes on a Scandal
Good movie...dire consequences for some bad decisions...
34
There Will Be Blood (2007,  R)
There Will Be Blood
Great, great movie...

Good period piece and of course great acting by DD Lewis...

"I DRANK YOUR MILKSHAKE"...one of the greatest movie lines and scenes ever (in context...you need the two hour build up to appreciate the INTENSITY of that scene)...
35
Juno (2007,  PG-13)
Juno
Great movie...takes taboo subject, turns in on it's head and has fun with it...
36
We Are Marshall (2006,  PG)
We Are Marshall
Decent movie...a parable of the Phoenix rising from the ashes...

Pretty faithful to actual events from what I've read...

Up Series - GENERAL REVIEW

GREAT, GREAT, GREAT series to watch these movies...started watching them all in order in 2007...

(by coincidence one of the subjects ends up living in Madison, WI!)

So very interesting to watch this non-statistically-relevant social experiment unfold...

Reality TV before there was Reality TV...

We see a little of ourselves in each on of the characters and family...

A masterful editing of subject matter, to get the audience to CARE about each of the subjects and APPRECIATE things from their lives...

Ebert puts this series in his all-time top 10 or even top 5 lists...I agree...

A must-watch for anyone over the age of 25...

44
Dreamgirls (2006,  PG-13)
Dreamgirls
Decent movie...

Should have just been titled: The Diana Ross Story

A little too long of a movie without an emphatic ending...bittersweet...
45
Charlie Wilson's War (2007,  R)
Charlie Wilson's War
Very disappointing...should have known better from the commercials...

Old redeeming this was Phillip Seymour Hoffman...
46
No Country for Old Men (2007,  R)
No Country for Old Men
Great, great, movie...

Captures the openess and bareness of the southwest to a "T"...

Could watch this 100 straight times and not be bored...

Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan (2006,  R)
Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan
Funny...laugh out loud funny, which doesn't come out of Hollywood much more these days...
55
United 93 (2006,  R)
United 93
Very good movie...captured the dramatics of that day very well...got my heart pumping with adreniline...

The scenes in the FAA control room were the most fascinating to me...

I kept saying during the movie that the guy playing the FAA director was doing a great job...turns out he was the REAL FAA guy from that day...he was the only "real life" character put into the cast... (maybe he's not an "actor" then?)
56
Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby (2006,  PG-13)
Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby

Good movie...depressing...

But, probably realistic for anyone who has close relationships with people who have substance abuse issues...
61
The Departed (2006,  R)
The Departed
Just okay...I know that goes against the grain, but I didn't think this even made the Scorsese Top 5 or even Top 10...

Jack was HORRIBLE in this movie...Marky Mark was okay, but too over the top cocky...

Maybe if I was from Boston I would have LOVED it...blah...

No was this movie was a BEST PICTURE for anything...???

Inside Man (2006,  R)
Inside Man
Okay...not bad for an on-demand free movie...

Interesting documentary...

Not sure I buy into all the conspiracy-theory stuff espoused in the movie...but it was interesting none-the-less...

Good portrait of Cobain...I didn't realize how fast he went from "nothing" to "megastar"...then ultimately to nothing again quickly...

Very talented frontman and band...

Decent movie...accidentally saw the end on cable before I rented it...took some of the movie away...
79
Cast Away (2000,  PG-13)
Cast Away
Okay...yet another over-hyped Hanks movie...

Thankfully, again, I saw it many years AFTER it came out or I probably would have hated it just because it was another overrated-Hanks-movie...
80
Miami Vice (2006,  R)
Miami Vice
Good movie...not up to the Michael Mann standards...but stunning visuals...

Didn't like some of the casting (Ferrell)... Also, should have kept some of the original artist soundtrack from the TV series...
81
Hustle & Flow (2005,  R)

Great, great movie...

What a tragedy...even as a fairly close current-events watcher I wasn't aware of the enormity of this genocide, nor how exactly it played out...

Painted a very CLEAR picture of the events...inspired me to do extensive research on the whole thing...would have voted this Best Picture of the Year...

"Best of the worst" as far as the Star Wars prequels...

Good fight scenes...no Jar Jar Binks...

But, still missing that "it" factor that the original movies had.

Also, should have had more airtime for the real Darth Vader.
