Tokyo Story (Tôkyô monogatari) (1953,  Unrated)
Tokyo Story (Tôkyô monogatari)
Shot with precision and simplicity, Tokyo Story touches very deeply without appealing to great conflicts. Silence is a constant, as well as hidden feelings that the spectator can sense but not necessarily identify.

Kaidan (Kwaidan) (Ghost Stories) (1964,  Unrated)
Kaidan (Kwaidan) (Ghost Stories)
Kaidan is a movie that portrays popular ghost stories of Japan. Kobayashi is a skilled master, and in this film the viewer is blessed with an amazing expressionist-influenced photography. Kobayashi is able to shoot very beautiful shots, with a accurate sense of composition, also move the camera slowly through the scene, and still be able to provide bold camera movements and twists, all according to the objective he intends to convey.
15
Samurai Rebellion (1967,  Unrated)
Samurai Rebellion
Samurai Rebellion is one of the greatest achievements in the genre. Kobayashi, more than Kurosawa, makes me think of Sergio Leone in the world of the Samurai, despite the remake of Kurosawa's "Yojimbo" by the Italian director. Kobayashi fills his film with intense human depth. Honor, morality and love move Samurai Rebellion and its conflits and make it a must-see for anyone who loves cinema - specially Oriental cinema fans.

Ashes of Time Redux (2008,  R)
Ashes of Time Redux
The re-edited version of Ashes of Time by Kar-wai is magic to the eyes. Christopher Doyle proved then he was able to do great cinematography in martial art movies as well. Wonderful cast, great script -- I'm biased to talk about Wong Kar-wai anyway. A masterpiece.

Last Life in the Universe (2004,  R)
Last Life in the Universe
Superb achievement . The editing makes this beautiful story a non-linear and dreamlike experience. The viewer travels smoothly through it's universe of poetry and humanity, but not without humor and sadness. As you'll see, "Last life in the universe" delivers the full pack, complemented with outstanding Christopher Doyle's cinematography and brilliant performance by the cast. In the end, we got Miike's cameo appearance to wrap it up. I got this movie without any information about it and not nothing the work of director Pen-Ek Ratanaruang. And what a great surprise.
