Quirky/Offbeat/Indie/Strange Films I Love.

  1. SDphotoggirl
  2. Shadow

These are the films that I love just for their strangeness. Some are really good...some are wonderfully awful. All I can watch over and over.

Great, innovative film. Funny even if it is about drug addicts in Scotland. Even the soundtrack kicks all kinds of ass!

Eagle vs. Shark (2007,  R)
Eagle vs. Shark 5.0 Stars
This film is funny, touching, and sweet at the same time. Clement plays a guy who is is emotionally 9 years old...in how he reacts to situations, people, and his interests. "Jarrod" (Clement) won't admit he is a loser, he is a champion of the world in his own mind Horsley is the girl who falls in love with him....and finally meets him at a party and starts a relationship with him after stalking him. He takes her with him to his hometown so he can "kill' the bully who bullied him all while growing up. Weirdness happens there and a bit of saddness as well. The film is very off-beat but also every well-done. I think we all know a guy like Jarrod and hope that the guy meets a person like Horsley's girl.

This film just cracks me up in how deadpan the characters are. The chase scene where Nicolas Cage runs from the store clerk and the police with the diapers in hand is classic.

The Bride kicks ass! O-Ren also is beautifully evil! Violent yet it is stylized violence...much like a comicbook...so it doesn't grose me. Definitely a good film...all about revenge. The swordfights are cool, the music is cool, everything is cool.

I was pleasantly surprised by this film. I had expected a huge mess due to the poor reviews it received but it is a fairy tale for adults and quite good. I found myself wondering what would happen next and was satisfied with the way the film unfolded. It was like watching a childhood book unfold on the screen. Paul Giamatti's acting even made me cry at one point while I watched the film. Definitely worth a viewing but remember to tap into the 12 year old child inside yourself as you watch.

Perfume: The Story of a Murderer 4.0 Stars
This is a very interesting film. I had read the book last year and really found it odd so wanted to see how it translated to the screen. Tykwer does a really decent adaption job. I loved the visuals and the main actor Ben Whishaw does a great acting job as Jean-Baptiste. He is just creepy enough and makes you feel for the character at the same time. When his character realizes how he should have reacted to the first woman that starts his murdering to capture scent at the orgy near the end, you feel his pain at realizing he cannot love or be loved. Very good film!

Fido 4.0 Stars
A wonderfully twisted "buddy" film about a little boy and his love for his family's zombie servant. It's set in a weird 50's world were zombie wars have gone on and a neck device keeps the zombies in check (and from eating flesh) so they can serve people. Very darkly funny and just twisted as heck! i loved it!

Black Sheep (2006) 4.0 Stars
This movie is twisted, silly, humorous, grose, and way too much fun to pass up! The sheep in New Zealand are mutated, and pissed off, and turning people they bite into were-sheep. The special effects (Though not great) are fun. Nothing more amusing than seeing a fake sheep launch in the air at it's vicitm. If you like Shaun of the Dead" or other horror/humor films with lots of grose special effects cooked up by the Weta Workshop...this film is for you!

A really funny and touching film about a dysfunctional, socially inept, man who grows personally after he orders an expensive "love doll" from online and treats her as his girlfriend. The whole town accepts her as well. It seems an unlikely good movie but it actually is very funny and sad. Go as see it!

The Darjeeling Limited (2007,  R)
The Darjeeling Limited 4.0 Stars
Very quirky yet full of feeeling. About three brothers traveling in India and all dealing badly with their father's death the year before. At the showing I went to the film was proceeded by the short film "Hotel Chevalier" starring Jason Schwartzman and Natalie Portman (and also directed by Anderson)...which gives some backstory to his character in "Darjeeling". Anderson always makes such quirky films and I enjoy them even if they do not become a favorite. I cannot wait to rewatch this film when it comes out on DVD so I can catch the little things I missed in the first viewing. The film also made me want to travel to India....it was filmed beauitfully and realistically.

Marie Antoinette (2006,  PG-13)
Marie Antoinette 4.0 Stars
I was pleasantly surprised by this film. So many people have bad-mouthed it but it was actually a very enjoyable film to watch. Loved the "new romantic/new wave" soundtrack which is connected to the fact that a lot of the bands from the early 80s idealized the time period this film was set in and Coppola was going up in that time period so made the muscial conenction. Love Dunst as Marie...she did a wonderful job at convaying the isolation and emotion her character felt being an Austrian in a French court. The cinematography was beauitful as was the colour palette used in the film. Very stylized film that likens the decadance of the French court to the punk rock/new wave years of more recent history. Definitely worth a view.

A very strange movie that is also very good. At times it was hard to look at Bale in this film because he is so painfully thin. The storyline has a twist to it that you don't really see coming which adds to the enjoyment of viewing this fim.

Planet Terror (Grindhouse Presents) 4.5 Stars
I really loved this film. It was like going to a drive-in movie in the 70s and seeing the exploitation films from that time period. Lots of skin, gore, and bad dialouge. The sense of watching an old print of the film was cool. It had a fake trailer that cracked me up before the "main attraction". "Machete" needs to be made into a film. If you love sleazy, gore-filled, amusing films...this one is the film for you.

Not a bad exploration of the life of Ian Curtis. You can tell the director is a photographer (and had taken all the iconic black/white shots of Joy Division). The way the characters interact is very real...you feel as if you are peeking in on their lives instead of just watching a film. It definitely is worth a watch.
