All those fucking awful horror movie that i just wish i could jump in the DeLorean from back to the future and prevent myself from watching. Which would be tonnes cos i JUST love Horror in all forms.
I honestly did not think I could ever see a movie that was as bad as this one even if I spent ever hour of the day for the next 50 years watching films.
The ironic thing is on the front of the DVD case it touts "From the makers of SPIDERMAN, DAREDEVIL, X-MEN and BLADE." Cos wheni see words like that is tend to think it means that the film will be at least half decent with all the suppossed great talent behind it.
It even goes as far as to state "Atmospheric. Visually stunning horror Movie" Well either that is a horrific printing mistake at the Dvd cover makers or someone was taking the piss out of not just the movie but us dumbasses for Renting/buying/watching/shredding it.
It had the potential to possible achieve that 2 1/2 star rating, had it not fallen into the trap of poor everything. Poor Characters, Poor Story developement and execution. Poor mythology. Poor bad guys (human form). Poor Hero. AND EXTREMELY POOR MONSTER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The story is that a new sheriff arrives at a small southern town after the last sheriff disappears. Other locals have too, and most been found dead and mutilated, cast as alligator attacks from the local swamp. However the reality is that oil barons digging up the swamp have disturbed the ancient malevolent native Indian monster hellbent on revenge. its seeking blood of the locals and kills by sticking tree branches through people.
Like I said Its just plain ludicrous. The monster "Man thing" It like a cross between the huge live trees from The Lord of the Rings and the Incredible hulk with a shocking case of pink eye.
Ps. The half a star is because I feel incredibly generous and not because it really deserves it.
Sorry I was laughing at this because the makers obviously intended it to be a joke
*whispering from movie elders*
WHAT this was supposed to be a serious movie?? Oh gosh darning hell, they managed to hit the comedy genre too without even trying, Well freaking done!!!!
Based on the true story of the Broderick Family and their campaign of terror on their Ranch of Hoboken Hollow. This bunch of hill-billy interbred nut jobs have been luring unsuspecting vagrants and hitch hikers to the ranch with the promise of food and shelter in turn for a few days work. However once they are there they refuse to let them leave, keeping them shackled, over worked, underfeed, scared, beaten, psychologically and physically abused and even turning those who rebel into JERKY!!!
The film centers around the 5 young men, their efforts to survive the ranch and the interests of local oil Tycoon J.T Goldman (Michael Madsen). See Goldman is desperately trying to buy out Mother Broderick who owns a Shop, Cedar Wood Stock and the Ranch on Hoboken Hollow. She refuses to sell so he starts snooping for the skeleton in the closest that will force the sell. And the skeleton happens to become many (in the well not the closet), and the scandal becomes wide as the local sheriff (Dennis Hopper) Is Mother's Cousin and is actually PROVIDING poor souls for the ranch slavery.
Although based on true events and has some potential to be an "ok" movie, I can't rate this well. A 1 star was greatly generous. It starts out like a Mockumentry rather than a film, like a type of dramatized reconstruction for the crime channel type shows, before cascading into chaotic torture and drug allured kinetics. The story flitters between trying to get in facts chronologically and systematically. but sadly descends mostly into an incoherent choppy confusing parody of killing, escape and poor story telling. Whether this is because the facts of the actual cases aren't know that well and they just tried to make a film with the very little know events and surmised the in between parts. Or possibly they just made a shit film.
Either way its a real shame because true stories are great material, if left alone and NOT glorified/sexed up. The story almost runs along the lines of a real life The Hills Have Eyes but without the "mutant/Savagery" aspect and is basically the Texan version of Wolf creek. The problem is with both this and Wolf Creek, that they focus too heavily on the Gore and shock value and put the Story on the back burner. There is no substance within the basic idea, yeah we're shown the main players and the important aspects of events and Problems but there is no "skin" on those "bones" (sorry bad pun) It like watching a 3 hour film of WWII and all they say is Hitler was a bad guy who tries to kill some people he didn't like and take over countries he had no right to rule, padding the rest out with video of bombing, battles, mass graves and concentration camp images but not explaining their meaning or significance.
However with that said it was rather funny seeing Mr Blonde in a stetson and a Pimp mustache Totally made my day.
"You wanna talk plagues, lets talk plagues. In 1400BC a group of nervous Egyptians saw the Nile turn red. But what they though was blood, was actually an algae bloom, which killed the fish which prior to that had been living off the eggs of frogs. Those uneaten eggs turned into record numbers of baby frogs who subsequently fled to the land and died. Their little rotting frog bodies attracted lice and flies, the lice carried the Blue Tongue Virus, which killed 70% of Egyptians livestock. The flies carried Glanders, a bacterial infection which in humans causes boils. Soon after that the Nile river valley was hit by a 3 day sandstorm, also know as the Plague of darkness. During the sandstorm intense heat combine with an approaching cold front created not only hail but electrical storms, which to Egyptians would look like fire from the sky. The subsequent wind would have blown the Ethiopian locust population off course and right into down town Cairo. Hail is wet, Locust leave droppings, spread both on your grain and you've got mycotoxins. Dinner time in ancient Egypt meant the first born child got the biggest portion, which in this case meant he eat the most toxins, which meant he died. 10 Plagues 10 scientific Explanations".
To be entirely honest this review is causing considerable pain to write and not just due to the bruising from my canular. I just don't see the point of horrors anymore as a viable aspect of films, and why would I when dull predictable barely thrilling or scary films like this are dealt out in the way Prozac is at Girls Aloud concerts.
The concept had potential as most decent horrors usually do. And lets face it what can be more scary than the concept of blind faith, biblical plagues, hick towns and a slightly feral/disturb/supernatural child. But once again its the undertaking of the performing and applications of the story that is highly lacking. Poorly executed character stories, dull acting from most, lack of passion and enthusiasm of the story and underdeveloped plot lines and subject matter.
The story is Hilary Swank and Iris Elba play biblical miracle and religious phenomena investigators and with scientific application basically debunk the crying statue of virgin mary or the restoration of sight to the local blind man after kissing the forehead of the dead priest. Katherine (Swank) is an ex-missionary who lost her faith after her family were slaughtered in a religious offering. Elba's character is a highly religious man after surviving over 12 gunshots to his body. The dynamic of this team and their work is truelly put to the test when called to a small Louisiana town after the rivers run read. The manifestation of the 10 biblical plagues being to appear all after the appearance of the strange young girl (Annasophia Robb) outcast by the locals to the woods off the river. Soon Katherine begins to realize that science has no power to explain, that maybe her faith is needed if she is to save the town, the girl, her friend and herself.
I started to realize that the flash backs, bible bashing and strange connection to a priest made little sense, the story fluttered about too much around the center theme without much reason or explanation. the ending was just packed with too much "stuff" (for lack of a better word). It was as if they just kept throwing ideas in regardless if they connected to the story or not. Like I know we'll make the young girl the incarnation of Katherine's dead daughter, or lets have them find a crypt full of dead children, or a strange cross/ pirate hook symbol carved on crap or have the creepy girl as part of a sick family cult religious thingy where they tortured her and think shes the Antichrist. There were just too many incoherent thoughts and ideas most of which were just irrelevant, and the ending scooted by very fast after a slow build up of story. In a nutshell it was all a little anticlimactic.
Fairly decent acting from Swank, no surprise and good performances from David Morrissey, Annasophia Robb and Idris Elba.
I've seen scarier things at the local farm like that two headed goat ARGH, and more suspense watching a blonde try to figure out a ticket machine at the train station. The thrill level though is pretty matched to that time the police chased that shoplifter and it was touch and go as to whether they had the juristicion to arrest him in case it breached his human rights.
What the heck is up with the films I'm watching lately?
I recorded this off the TV about 2 months ago because the advert for it looked really fantastic, creepy, thrilling and scary. But once again the reality is that the advert had ALL the creepy, scary and thrilling bits of the film in it and what was left was a boring dull chase movie.
On paper the concept of this movie is a great one and has potential to provide a fabulous supernatural thriller worthy of a King Novel. But between the paper and application to the film screen something critical goes missing and the result is spectacular let down.
This is the concept : Serial killer Reece (Elias Koteas) is being put to death for his crimes, the Detective John Hobbes (Denzel Washington) Who caught Reece come to see the killer just before his execution. Along with the documentary team they witness the seemingly deranged Reece speak in various tongues, verbally taunt and mentally menace Hobbes. Just as he is lead to the Gas chamber chair he hauntingly sings a song called "Time on my side" (which plays heavily throughout the film) He is then executed and Hobbes relaxes and moves on with his work, life and taking care of his mentally slow brother and his young niece. However Reece Wasn't your run of the mill Killer he was actually possessed by a demon. A demon which can expel it's evil spirit from a dead body and into the next and closest warm Being. He can also switch to other people via touch and he is determined to continued with his wonderful "art" by offing as many people a he can possess and then taunting Detective Hobbes. Around which lore about Demons, Angels, Possession, The Bible, Revelations and the Apocalypse are thrown around but without any disernable or coherent fashion.
It's hard to imaging that Denzel couldn't provide a good act, but he is just OK in this, does a good job and plays it well but nothing mind blowing within the content for him to sink his teeth in, and it clearly shows in his performance. Its almost like he is actually bored and unchallenged playing it.
Donald Sutherland is better but a short supporting role as Hobbes Police chief doesn't provide the stage to shine either. He is slightly shift character wise with a very oppressive sinister nature to him to the extent that you don't trust him that much, helping with some of the story.
John Goodman is great as Hobbes's Police partner and produce the comradeship and light relief to help the character through the dull story.
But the greatest performance of the film is the short role played by Elias Koteas as Reece, Its deranged, creepy, menacing and utterly psychotic. The haunting of his tongues, Riddles and that Darn song all make for gripping viewing.
At 2 hours long this film lakes the much needed punch to get a decent rating. The concept is great but the application is pathetic, its way to slow, there is NO action or dynamic parts, the story drags along at a snails pace leaving hardly anything dramatic being thrown up. Also some of the information produces gets just left out later on.
The only good part I liked is the narrative over the film which was enjoyable to say the least.
Give it a miss and go for The Exorcist/ Constantine instead for Demonic possessions.
Conflicting reviews some say its good some say its bad....naked Dr Phil bad...ok semi naked.
I'll have to see for myself the movie I mean not the whole stripped shrink........although thats sounds like alot of fun.
~~~~UPDATED REVIEW~~~~~ (sorry I couldn't bear to part with my pre-review comments)
Well firstly let me say 2 stars were extremely generous for this film. It just ludicrously ridiculousness to the point of if there would've been religious tones it could've came straight from the bible.
So this is how I concluded the way this film must have been pitched and then developed. The sales pitch to the Studio:
Producer: "Hey.. Right this is the concept, Boy tricks girl into taking a lift home at Christmas, as he is infatuated with her and thinks it would be a good romantic opportunity. However after taking a short cut off the hightway through a snow covered, wood lined back road they have a run in with a crazy driver and crash. Now here's where it gets interesting cos they trek to a disused house in the woods to shelter till dawn from the freezing temperatures, but their then tomented by the ghost of the people who died in the 1950's at the hands of a pyscho farmer who murder people on the road and surrounding woods."
*Studio Reps sit scratching heads and grimacing at idea*
Studio Rep 1"I like the main idea but the whole haunted house thing has been done" Rep 2"Yeah and crazy hillbilly farmer is a bit too churned out in films today....although I did have a great pitchfork killing idea" Rep 1 "Really a pitch fork I was thinking pig swill grinder?" Rep 3"Silence idiots for I have come up with the money making idea, Scrap the house its boring the action shall take place on the ROAD and they will shelter in the Car. The Farmer is not scary enough we need a more fundamentally good and wholesome character to be crazed.......hmmm a monk? No too easy....A doctor? not likely .....Bingo a COP!!!!!" And he shall have the super evil ghost power to freeze people to death with the simple touch of his murderous ectoplasmic hand. Rep 2 "Ingenious oh and just in time of our spa appointments, i'm so in need of a colonic"
So now you might be able to see exactly how unoriginal and actually rubbish this film was. The story is just not good. There is no suspense, there are tons of things that you never get answers to like how in the begin she wasn't herd screaming after getting looked in the bathroom. Or why she had flashbacks to the cops murders. The scares are poor the ghosts are very few and far between and not particularly spooky or gruesome either and the characters both need a good slap too. The acting is quite cold too just like the surrounding. Take my advice burn the dvd to keep you warm as the flames dancing provide better entertainment than this.
Are you scared? God lord NO!!!!!! The only thing scary about this low rate gore fest was the poor acting, increadably weak plot and the major fact that its main concept comes from Saw. The Detectives investigating the killer were basically irrelevant as they provided no help or information throughout. The victims were especially annoying, not suprising that the killer murdered them in the grotesques of ways. Also the ill concieved direction the story took nearer the end was stupid. I feel cheated had the potential to be half decent film but comes fallling far far far short of the decent viewing line!
I saw the trailer for this and went "Oh now that looks disturbingly yummy to see" Sadly they put all the good bits in the trailer. This was extremely brutal, shocking, gory and an assult on the senses. But thats all it has going for it.
Center around a 6 foot butch german living and working in Las Vegas, as a photographer. He dresses half pimp half cowboy, He has a cold calm exterior whose emotionless in his social interactions, creating the only theme in his that was good. His murders are mostly trecherous, brutal, and very gory, like blood splurting every where , covering every surface, new spray on old spray, slit wrists, chainsaws to the forehead, nails through wrist ect ect. The rawness of it all is extreme.
However i just described the ONLY decent parts of this film. The director tries to establish a reasoning behind the killings, with some weak assed flashbacks that are useless and this facination with a naked barbie doll which also isnt explained. They also show that the killers grandfather was a leading Nazi, close to Hitler, who he refers to as a Hero. There are so many things that are brought up then abondened like they never existed, like that cannibal issue.
And WTF was with the constant shots of him driving?? The soundtrack, Holy Hell Above!!! Totally Fucking Shit!! Never hits the mark, never feels in place far to techno, never builds any tension or adds to the drama, Instead it just gave me a bloody head and earache. Oh also a Very ironic and humour cameo by the candyman himself Tony Todd as the " adult book Store "owner.
The plot was awful, i mean this very distinct guy is picking up women brutally murdering them, Raping them, torturing them and leaving a trail and evidence everywhere, but there is no Police issue enter into it anywhere. And after all this he gets pissed at his ex's younger sister for breaking them up so he starts killing young girls even being as bold as to kill one in a public toilet!! Come on how stupid do we look. And then to really make point that this movie is hileriously redundant he get his ass kicked by a teenage girl all alone in his house trapped in a basement full of tortured corpses with him.
Not a good film, not even a decent film. Joshua Jackson acting is probably the best of the cast which doesn't say much for the rest! the plot is lacking, the dialogue is boring and the werewolves were cheesy and very badly done! Its not remotely scary, more bloody and it severly lacks even that hint of spark that even decent fllms have. And like the title states "CURSED" its fitting cos thats all u'ld do after watching this crap film.
Good concept in theory, poor attempt when put into practice. As there is no plot outlined for this film, i'll give you a quick rundown, mad man in the forest, kidnapps women slices into their abdomen, puts in a razor blade then stiches them up and dumps them in a coffin nailing down the lid. If they survive and manage to escape he then ties them around the neck to a tree, perched on some wood that if falls they will suffocate. In order to survive he tells them to 'Cut it out' meaning the razor blade and free themselves. One's with the strengh to get through it, he keeps as slaves. And this film centers around one of the women, Hope, and her torment after she and her daughter become his next victims.
It's a particularly brutal and gorey film, from a woman's intestines slopping out of her belly to broken legs and tongues being sliced out. It supposedly based on true events but if thats the case then why the very weak plot? There is very little explaination as to how the women get taken, how they live in urban areas but this crazed madman of the forest manages to carry out the kidnappings while flewing to rural forest camps sites? And ultimately why he does what he does?
There are echo's of wolf creek(cazy gun tooting creepy outback killer picking ofeveryone that ventures into his path), and you have the elements of Saw, with that what would you do to survive issue.
The camera work and scenes are very jittery, and don't flow together very well. The actual film runs rather slow generally and i was bored watching some parts because nothing really happens for the majority mainly the middle section of the film. Alot of it was predictable and the ending was a total cop out, It ends very abruptly leaving sooo many questions and you just end up thinking 'WTF?????'
Clique comes to mind? A typical killer monster film, and a low budget Z-list cast to round off the excellence.
In 112AD during a solar eclipse, an arab tribe turned the dreaded Basilisk to stone using the Eye of medusa, a solid gold septre with a stunning diamond mount. Skip foward to present day and Harry, Rudy and Sierra acheolagist dig up the Stone creature and septre and bring it back to the US college. Weeks later the big unvailing of the exhibite takes place during a solar eclipse and the Basilisk returns flesh and blood with a mean killing streak.
The remained of the film centres around the guys turning to stop the huge snake from tearing people to shreads, eating them, or turning them into stone statues with the glance of its serpent eyes.
Some good acting from Jeremy London as Harry and Rudy played by Griff Furst was funny to watch providing great funny one liners. Also Yancy Butler as the rich bitch Hannah was great to watch, especially her screaming obsenities at the Basilisk when it eats her Gucci dress.
Provided some interesting mythology and facts to play the mythical beasty angle, but lacks substance, nothing that hasn't been done before and to much better standard, and some of the special effects with the esception of the creature are dire, very badly done, including the poor actor/ computer interactions and the computerised 'blood splatter'.
Erm note to self read other people reviews before watching films. Many people warned me this was how do i say this politely, a weak assed prequel. However as i have this joyous fascination for the character of Dr Hannibal "The Cannibal" Lecter I decided to undertake viewing of this film.
Well not wanting to give the plot away too much, all i'll say its after his parents are killed during WWII and a terrible event happens to him at the hands of some local SS wannable criminals, young lecter grows up seeking revenge. It tries to establish the reasoning behind Our (Anthony Hopkins) Lecters crimes, but its a redundant attempt, poorly construed and very weakly discribed.
The acting from Gaspard Ulliel is actually quite good, but far from the legend of hopkins. He does occasionally portray that sadistic charm of the latter character but its very few and far between. However the rest of the performance makes his character look as limp as a wet lettace compared to the chillingly horrific Hopkins character.
Some good acting from Rhys Ifans as the leader of the criminal gang aka the baddie, and from Dominic West as the detective hunting war criminals and ultimately Young Mr Lecter.
Truthfully don't bother with this, go watch one of the other three Hannibal films your be much more astonished sickened and entertained!
i caught this film during an insominac episode! it was not bad, the story is a bit loosely tied together the action is ok, but with the lead female looking with a gust of wind might knock her over then its really doesnt seem convincing. some good special effects but nothing spectacular! worth a watch if you cant sleep or just want to pass the time.
This had so much potential to bacome a good horror movie. The ghost activity and attacks on the daughter but it just bombed. It became a lame weak remake of exorcist the ideas were unoriginal poorly delievered and the plot was as bad as the characters.
The only praise can go to James D'Arcy, however his character was irrelevant and the interaction with the daughter seriously undermined the message that was the final outcome of this movie (child abuse????)And to think with a cast as great as Donald Sutherland and Sissy Spacek there would be some substance but there just wasn't.
I mean the effects and the suspence was enjoyable and it gets 1 star but where is the horror, where is the agony and what was with the plot it wasn't delevered very well. And was it a "true story" or a blair witch style true story. I mean if it was based on true event then why is the depiction of events so scatterbrained and lacking in explanations and information?
Just shows throwing a great cast and millions of dollar at a film still won't make it anything more than mediocore if the script and plot are shit!
Once again another poor attempt to adapt a fantastic book of Stephen King's into a movie. Haboucha totally rules the movie with a talent well beyond his cast even at his tender age. The other cast/characters don't do justice to the book's characters. They are weak, flat, with no passion or raw emotion. Perlman is good as Entragain but again he lacks that spark that i expected of the character. Although it did stick closely to the book, the actual developement of the story was slow and almost boring. I was throughly disappointed with the ending too! Maybe because i did really enjoy the book ( i read it in a day cos i couldn't put it down) that i found this film so lacking. Obviously my overactive mind brings me more indepth hallucinagenic pleasure than a major hollywood francise called cinematography. Guess I'll have to go read the book again!
Ok my rating of the following film is purely based on suspence and thrillerness as the horror element was totally non-exsistant!
The only partially scares were from Mega- Freeking Crazy Mia Farrow as Damien's replacement nanny. (The 1st hung herself during dear damiens birthday party) And in the form of rather greosome and creepy dreams.
Very Poor direction, Dull cast especially Julia Stiles. The plot was kept together enough by the better talents of Liev Schreiber and David Thewlis. But the casting of Lil' Seamus as Damien just didn't really cut it at all! I spent all the film thinking how incredablly adorable he is and what stunningly blue eyes he has.
As for the devil incarnate well he looks more like an autistic child. Acted like a spoilt brat who threw a incredable temper tantrum at church
I mean i'm more evil than that kid, I wanted hell fire and mind violations you know? like when he knocks his mum of the balcony clearly an accident. Whereas evilness would include raining sharpened metal forks or several pot plants down onto her lifeless body on the auditorium floor.
Well maybe I expect too much in so called horror films and remakes. Your welcome to discuss any ideas or conflicts you may have with this review......even with me if you must.
Good suspense and tension in this film. Yeah the mutants are creepy and its preety brutal and gory. But its just not that great a film. It lacks impact, and that spark that most great horror films have, the one which keeps you intriged and mystified throughout. However unlikely hero found in the nerdy looking Doug, and some very strong scenes.
ok aside from the based on true events and the violance and gore in this film, i found it very slow and not that great a film. it wasnt really that scary nor thrilling!
but the scenery was great!
Well as far as supernatural thrillers go this is in the "worth a watch if nothing better is on" catagory. A good mix of decent story and visual scares from cgi ghosts, and a far amount of tension building do make for good viewing and Nathan Fillion is pretty decent to watch.
But there a so many let downs....its very short , many ideas don't hold weight and aren't properly developed, the irrelevent love interests, and some of the story does seams slightly unlikely to actually happen that way. And the ending is a bit crap. Definetly feel the first film had more promise but neither are up to scratch for my expectation of a good horror.
ok maybe it was just me but i found this a very challenging film to watch. the special effects , blood and gore are great very well done, but the cast, the supernatural stuff at the start and especially the plot of this movie confused the hell out of me! At the end of this film i was so disappointed as there was huge gaps in the story that even with my intellegence i couldnt explain. PS the only part classified as horror is Sean Bean's attempt at an american accent! Classic! PMSL!
the only really good part of this "Scary" film is when a certain someone loses their head in the fire place! great! (i didnt mention names for anyone who wants to see / waste their time on this!)
OK 3 things i learned from this film, 1) never fall asleep while waiting for the last tube train. 2) if u do miss the train never decide to walk the tracks of the dark tunnels, and 3) if a deranged, rat loving, mutant-like, frenzied killer is stalking and killing those u meet don't hesitate to stab the fucker with anything that will kill him!!
From past experience and a little research of the london tube system i can see where the fear factor is in this movie. However i didn't rate Potente's character Kate much and was almost hoping for her to meet a bloody end. \The other cast are good, and the actual plot is simple mostly (crazy killer guy backstory is hinted but never revealed or explained) It's pretty gory and brutal, with some very ingeniuos ways of killing, especially the big old knife that gets shoved somewhere unpleasent (ouch!!)
Overall its not half bad, decent enough to watch but true horror fans don't expect much or you'll be disappointed! Great ending though!
I don't get it anymore. Why, Oh Why do people rave and recommend horror films to me when they are no more scary than the cookie monster snorting cookie crumbs of kermits ass.
The Host was pitched to me as a really scary Korean film, with a mutant sea beast that attacks a waterside community, kidnaps people and infects those left behind. And I suppose in fairness I got all of that except the really scary part.... I also got bad acting, poor story, unbelievable moments and very poor "heroes".
The story revolves around a small family, (the park's) a grandpa who runs a small snack shack in a waterside park with his slacker dosy son, and his granddaughter. His other son is a bit of a wheeling dealing "geezer" and his daughter is famous bronze medalist archer.
So it starts off at a Korean morgue, a jack ass American Pathologist orders the Korean assistant to dump over 200 bottles of highly toxic embalming solution and other chemicals down the drain and into the Han river. With great reluctance he follows orders and the result is a dire mutation of a fishy into a big scary violent mutated Fishy monster.
The first few scenes with the monster attacking and rampaging are by far the best in this film. Its fast paced and great to watch visually and the monster is impressive. The chase scenes are very chaotic but I think that only added to them, but not in that makes you dizzy shaky camera angles though.
In the ensuing chaos Gang-Du (dosy son) loses the grip on his daughters hand and she is swept away by the monster to its sewer lair. The Park family greive and bicker over the loss before the US military qaurantine them and any other in contact with the monster. Why well its the host of a deadly VIRUS of course!!
However they are determined to rescue Hyun-seo, and break out of the hospital becoming public enemy number one and next potential monster food.
Ok so all the elements of a monster flick are present so what's not to like right? Well how about the fact that some of it just stupid like a fight breaking out at the mourning area. or that after a lobotomy Gang-Du is almost immediately able to get up and run off on a full scale rescue attempt. Another thing I didn't really like was the daughter (archer) Nam-Joo so incredibly soleem and emotionless, come on your niece has just been taken and possibly eaten by a huge fish monster give us a grimace or a tear or anything to show you actually alive in the film. And what the heck is she thinking by trying to attack said monster with a bow and a single arrow? Its like a pale skinned army expected to kill with a tiny little red knife
There are some touching and good parts of the film, like Hyun-seo's protecting the young boy from the monster, the grandfather's death (good in the homer "D'OH" kind of way) and the final battle scene.
Here are a lot of issues raised in this that I though maybe it could've done with out like the "SARS" connection, the US exploitation and Poverty. Which are in their self valid issues but just not needed to be so driven in this.
Only watch it if you don't mind subtitled films or you have nothing else on is my verdict, its not terrible but its surely isn't far beyond good.
I had a lot of trouble rating this movie I have changed it from 1/2 a star to 1 star up to 1 1/2 stars back to 1 star down to half star the up to 1 star again. And even still I'm thinking off changing it.
Bless little Sarah Michelle Gellar, she tries so hard to be in good horror movies, we had I know what you did last summer, Scream 2, The grudge (and the grudge 2) and now this.....The Return. And one day she may actually achieve her dream and be in a great one.
So what it the return about I hear you all scream with delight.........no sorry that my little slave in the cupboard screaming. But I'll tell you about it anyway, so Gellar plays Joanne Mills, a young and troubled traveling business woman. Troubled because she has visions of a brutal murder that took place 15 years before on a person she does not know in a place she doesn't know.
But then one vision produces a image of a bar, and on a journey home to her fathers house she begins to piece together a little more from her vision which leads her to a small farm and Terry Stahl. Here she finds a conclusive and spooky link to her visions in a place she has absolutely no visitation to or even knows about. Terry is shunned by the locals who believe he was responsible for the fatal stabbing of his wife 15 years prior. But Joanne knows different and puts herself in harms way to uncover the truth for Terry.
The problem with this film and the reason for my low rating is that it has no substance. Gellar is not great considering she can act. Mostly she is emotionless and off in some far away land, the whole part crazy part abused part shy victim gig some how does sit very well nor does her whole gothy style. The weak performance and character is just a bit off putting from someone you expect to pull of a strong female lead. And the whole self harming issue just annoyed me, it was uncalled for and irrelevant to the story.
Peter O'Brien does a good job of playing Terry but with little dialogue or scenes there isn't much to work with. Likewise with other supporting cast.
The plot is a bit jiggly and by the end you do understand it better but its not that good to be bother with all the tiny tit bits of information really. And although I thought the ending was rather good at explaining how Joanne is connected to terry and how her visions came to pass, I could help but feel it was a alternate and done before way of portraying a possession/vision story.
Verdict is don't bother unless you really like Gellar's work.
