I add a movie to the list whenever I watch one (whether I liked it or not).

Oldboy (2005,  R)
Oldboy
Didn't see that ending coming at all. I think it makes the whole movie. The rest of it is intriguing but it sometimes got too cryptic to completely sustain my interest. But I stuck to it until the end and it was worth it.

The Abyss (1989,  PG-13)
The Abyss
I cannot BELIEVE that these people went through all that aggravation to make this movie. I think that got my attention more than the movie itself. The making-of documentary gave me a better appreciation of the Abyss. And I prefer by far the original ending (not the one that made the theaters).

Sideways (2004,  R)
Sideways
I was very charmed by this movie. It is subtle and different. Many people warned me that it was very boring but I really believe that they completely missed the point of the story. I loved the characters and the fact that the movie didn't follow the usual romantic comedy clichés.

Deliverance (1972,  R)
Deliverance
I was bored during this movie. The only compelling moment for me was the banjo scene. I found this movie very disappointing, considering how much it's been built up.

Das Cabinet des Dr. Caligari. (The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari) (1920,  Unrated)
Das Cabinet des Dr. Caligari. (The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari)
My first silent film. I liked it but it didn't change my life like i expected it to...

The Hills Have Eyes (2006,  R)
The Hills Have Eyes
Not really sure how I feel about this movie...I didn't really like the original. I watched this one until the end but I was unmoved. Sure, horrible things happen but it seemed...exploitative? Devoid of purpose? Pointless? I don't know...now that I think about it, I didn't like this movie.

Wait Until Dark (1967,  Unrated)
Wait Until Dark
This movie contains a scare that has made me jump the highest of any other jump scare ever put in a movie. The acting was great and I didn't expect such a dark (no pun intended) turn to the story considering that Audrey Hepburn is in it.

El Laberinto del Fauno (Pan's Labyrinth) (2006,  R)
El Laberinto del Fauno (Pan's Labyrinth)
Beautiful, very dark and unflinchingly brutal at times. Flawlessly interpreted by the cast. The 'Pale Man' scene alone is worth the price of admission.

300
A very entertaining popcorn movie and the very definition of eye-candy. It's one of the better action movies that I've seen in the past few years.

Good Night, And Good Luck (2005,  PG)
Good Night, And Good Luck
Very subtle, simple movie that is still very enjoyable. Well acted and directed, with a topic that is relevant even today.

Trilogy of Terror (1975,  Unrated)
Trilogy of Terror
Great performances (4 of them) by Karen Black. Unlike most, I haven't seen this movie as a child so there is no trauma associated with it. But I have to admit that the final shot is one of the creepiest I've seen in a long time. Not bad for a 70's tv movie...
13
Comedian (2002,  R)
Comedian
This documentary had some interesting moments but I'm not sure I'd recommend it to most people, expecially not fans of the show Seinfeld. This has absolutely nothing to do with it. I think most viewers might end up disappointed or even bored by this movie. I enjoyed the perspective into the world of stand-up comedy that I'd never seen before.
14
Platoon (1986,  R)
Platoon
This movie made me realise that I don't really like war films as a genre. They all feel the same to me. Is there a movie that actually explains WHY these people were being sent to Vietnam? You'd think that would be mentioned at least once...It always seems about illustrating the horror of those jungles and of war itself but I would have loved it to be placed in a political context (not just social, and the film even lacked that). I might have cared about it a bit more. Great performances, though.

The Host (Gwoemul) (2007,  R)
The Host (Gwoemul)
Very entertaining movie. Also quite funny (I laughed out loud at the funeral scene). the tone changes toward the end to become much darker but it works. The creature scenes were beautiful and completely believable, strangely. Definitely worth a look.
16
Dead Silence (2007,  R)
Dead Silence
Funniest movie I've seen in a long time. Funnier than Borat, even. What? It's not a comedy...? So what was that ending about then? ...I'm pretty sure it's a comedy. I had a great time watching it. But seriously, there were some genuinely well directed and effective scares but the whole thing is so ridiculous (terrible dialogue, bad acting, freaking PUPPETS!, etc.). This will become a cult film, I'm sure.

One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975,  R)

Aftermath (1994,  Unrated)
Aftermath
This trilogy of short films revolves around the idea of death but offers very different perspectives on the subject. The first story is a very brief (about 8 min) film about a man who experiences the first few moments following his own passing. The amateurish nature of the filmmaking of The Awakening makes the tale that follows that much more shocking.

Aftermath certainly not for the easily offended. It's an unflinching look at what happens to the human body after death. That story takes place mostly in a cold and sterile autopsy room. Viewers should brace themselves for almost intolerable...uglyness. The most disturbing part of it is that, according to the director, the way the cadavers are being handled in the story is identical to how it is done in real autopsy rooms he visited for research (referring to the dissections, but one supposes that it could also apply to the necrophilia, since necrophiles are likely to find employment that allows them easy access to the objects of their obsession). It's a harsh piece but once you get past all the blood and desecration, there is a lot there to be discussed.

Genesis, the last short, illustrates the loss of a loved one and the loneliness and longing that ensues. It's an original presentation of a concept that has become a bit of a cliché in film. This tragic love story was quite moving and beautifully depicted.

Through the central theme of death, Nacho Cerdà demonstrates his evolution as a storyteller, as well. And the dvd contains many extras that help gain insight into his vision and the ideas he chose to explore. The extras are as interesting as the films themselves. This dvd is a must-see for true horror fans.

Darwin's Nightmare
I really wanted to like this movie but I couldn't. The director approaches the subject superficially and many scenes felt staged (the 2 kids smoking in the alley, the prostitutes looking at the video of their friend...). There were a few compelling scenes but overall, it was a bit of a mess. I didn't feel like I learned much of anything after watching it and I felt myself drifting off many times. A documentary should be entertaining, as well as informative. This failed on both levels, in my opinion.

Layer Cake (2005,  R)

Severance (2006,  R)
Severance
A bit slow to start but once it does, it's a lot of fun. I don't understand the comparisons to Shaun of the Dead other than the fact that they are both British horror-comedies. They don't have much else in common (and Shaun is the better film). I grew attached to the characters and loved that they were actually SMART (well, most of the time). Stupid people getting killed isn't as entertaining now as it was 25 years ago. That decapitation payoff will probably become a classic horror moment. I also have to add that 'But it's a PIE!' is my new favorite line...
