Comedian (2002, R)
This documentary had some interesting moments but I'm not sure I'd recommend it to most people, expecially not fans of the show Seinfeld. This has absolutely nothing to do with it. I think most viewers might end up disappointed or even bored by this movie. I enjoyed the perspective into the world of stand-up comedy that I'd never seen before. |

Platoon (1986, R)
This movie made me realise that I don't really like war films as a genre. They all feel the same to me. Is there a movie that actually explains WHY these people were being sent to Vietnam? You'd think that would be mentioned at least once...It always seems about illustrating the horror of those jungles and of war itself but I would have loved it to be placed in a political context (not just social, and the film even lacked that). I might have cared about it a bit more. Great performances, though. |

Dead Silence (2007, R)
Funniest movie I've seen in a long time. Funnier than Borat, even. What? It's not a comedy...? So what was that ending about then? ...I'm pretty sure it's a comedy. I had a great time watching it. But seriously, there were some genuinely well directed and effective scares but the whole thing is so ridiculous (terrible dialogue, bad acting, freaking PUPPETS!, etc.). This will become a cult film, I'm sure. |

Aftermath (1994, Unrated)
This trilogy of short films revolves around the idea of death but offers very different perspectives on the subject. The first story is a very brief (about 8 min) film about a man who experiences the first few moments following his own passing. The amateurish nature of the filmmaking of The Awakening makes the tale that follows that much more shocking. |

Darwin's Nightmare (2005, Unrated)
I really wanted to like this movie but I couldn't. The director approaches the subject superficially and many scenes felt staged (the 2 kids smoking in the alley, the prostitutes looking at the video of their friend...). There were a few compelling scenes but overall, it was a bit of a mess. I didn't feel like I learned much of anything after watching it and I felt myself drifting off many times. A documentary should be entertaining, as well as informative. This failed on both levels, in my opinion. |

Severance (2006, R)
A bit slow to start but once it does, it's a lot of fun. I don't understand the comparisons to Shaun of the Dead other than the fact that they are both British horror-comedies. They don't have much else in common (and Shaun is the better film). I grew attached to the characters and loved that they were actually SMART (well, most of the time). Stupid people getting killed isn't as entertaining now as it was 25 years ago. That decapitation payoff will probably become a classic horror moment. I also have to add that 'But it's a PIE!' is my new favorite line... |
