American Splendor (2003,  R)
American Splendor
A hilarious film at first; then you realize the characters are quite annoying if you deal with them in real life. Apart from the rather slow pacing, the screenplay was well choreographed. Giamatti again at his best as the gloomy protagonist.

Das Leben der Anderen (The Lives of Others) (2006,  R)

Paris Je T'aime (2007,  R)
Paris Je T'aime
Like a French cheese platter; some rich and delectable, some bland and uninspiring. Quel dommage, but the many unprepared scenes overwhelms the artisanal ones. The idea of a palate of short movies sounds exciting, but questionably the five minute-per-story scheme might have been going for too much.

This Is Spinal Tap (1984,  R)
This Is Spinal Tap
This original mockurockumentary is one brilliant piece of rare improvised comedy on film. I would rate it up to eleven!

Ratatouille (2007,  G)

Reno 911!: Miami (2007,  R)
Reno 911!: Miami
Immensely disappointing, coming from a hardcore fan of the TV series. The film reduces the original charm of a reality TV, rough-cut COPS spoof into somewhere between the series and a Police Academy wannabe. It goes for cheap laughs instead of holding onto some believable elements that usually make Reno 911 funny as hell.

Sideways (2004,  R)
Sideways
A subtle piece. Sideways should be treated like wine, savoring the taste and appreciating its complex textures. It's definitely no cold beer that gives a pop and instant gratification. Plods at a slow pace, has no punchlines, has no Hollywood dramatics, but it felt honest and down to earth. It's not your traditional "suicidal alcoholic and ultra party animal finally punching each other out cold" movie but it takes a more mellow, life-like approach. The intentionally lesser known acting ensemble matches the mood of the movie perfectly. I didn't expect that Giamatti could act that well! It's daylight robbery that he didn't get even an Oscar nomination for this role.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (2007,  PG-13)
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
Darker and more tolerable than previous Harry Potter films. Not yet a great film, but easier to stomach than the goody goody Philosopher's Stone.
12
An Inconvenient Truth (2006,  PG)
An Inconvenient Truth
Great presentation by Gore, slow and repetitive as a movie. Good facts to convert non-believers of global warming, but doesn't tackle the issue fully a la Michael Moore and other documentaries.
13
Shrek the Third (Shrek 3) (2007,  PG)
14
Transformers (2007,  PG-13)
Transformers
Michael Bay's best film to date.. unfortunately it doesn't say much. The transformations are undeniably cool the first 20 times, even for non geeks, but ironically the movie loses steam during the lengthy action sequences. They put effort trying to incorporate humor; it actually has more funny bits than similar movies in the genre. Best viewed around opening dates to hear the fanboys clapping and enjoy the corny good atmosphere.

Spider-Man 3 (2007,  PG-13)
Spider-Man 3
For the third time, Spider-Man shows how a superhero movie is done.
At times, it seems to have too many plot lines that it bites more than it can chew, like the much maligned Batman and Robin; but somehow it still manages enough exploration for each character and story.
