Typical 80's teen comedy but by no means John Hughes best film. It would take a lot to live up to The Breakfast Club and as I expected this one didn't even come close. There were a few reasons I wanted to see it. One would be that I wanted to see another of John Hughes' films. The second would be I thought it would be fun to see Robert Downey Jr. in one of his earlier roles. I didn't really get to see much of him and he played a bit of a brute but he did make me laugh when he and his friend poured the red juice over the other two characters. The plot was really stupid and didn't exactly fullfill even my lowest of expectations. Anthony Michael Hall was actually quite good. His potential was clear. The scene in the bar and after when he had to appear drunk was rather funny. It satisfied a few laughs but it isn't something I would watch again or recommend unless your a big Anthony Michael Hall fan.
As a big fan of Robert Downey Jr., I've been dying to see this for ages. I didn't want to expect too much as the chances of getting a cheesy comedy were fairly high. I was therefore shocked when that really wasn't the case. It wasn't so much cheesy but more charming. I felt this was mainly down to the charismatic way that Robert Downey Jr. plays his character. This film was still a fairly early role for him and you can really see his potential in the way he performs. The plot is far fetched and a little stupid but it's fun and it doesn't take itself too seriously. The rest of the casts performances are decent and carry the film well. I recommend this film to any fan of Robert Downey Jr. and to anyone else who likes easy going films with not too much else going on.
A lot better than I first anticipated. I mainly wanted to see it because it had Robert Downey Jr. in it. I'm glad that I don't have to say he was better than he actually was just because I like him as an actor. He was actually pretty good. And although the film itself isn't amazing, he was definatly the highlight. Out performing Mel Gibson by quite a bit. I think that the preference to Downey Jr's character was also down the the fact that there wasn't as much characterisation done on Gibson. The plot is interesting and involving but it is also a bit of a mish mash of different concepts. The film was originally meant to be a serious war film but after most of their budget was spent it was turned into a less serious, more comic film instead. It still works well and is definatly worth seeing at least once.
I think it's important to know that I am a huge Charlie Chaplin fan. Robert Downey Jr. as him was just perfect. When choosing someone to play an important historical figure it can be difficult. Somehow the director got it spot on when choosing Robert Downey Jr. His performance was just stunning and his portrayol of Chaplin was pretty damn good. Because not many people knew what he was like away from the camera and his biography turned out to be a load of rubbish it must have been hard for him to get it right but I think he did. I would call this a must see film for everyone even if you hated Cahplin because here you get to see another side to him. A side that no one saw. A side completely different to that of the one on camera that was always making people laugh. From this you'll learn a lot more about a caring and brilliant man.
I seen this a while back but the review was poor so I thought I better change it. It's a great film. I love Woody Harrelson in it. Together with Juliette Lewis, they make a great pair. I've only recently discovered Robert Downey Jr. so I guess I'll have to watch this again some time because I really can't rememeber much of his performance. No doubt it was great. The other actors do a brilliant job as well. I think I have to mention Oliver Stone as well because it really is directed beautifully. A must see film that is romantic but disturbing.
I find it hard to dislike anything Robert Downey Jr is in. He's just such a funny guy, even if the film itself is pretty crap, watching it for his performance alone is usually worth the time. A few people had recommended this film saying it was a pretty good romcom that wasn't too alike everything else out there that was on the go. Finally managed to find a copy and I can't say I was too disappointed with the whole thing. It was slightly more twisted than I was expecting though. I thought it would be about a woman, searching for a guy, finds guy, falls in love. That type of thing, but there was a bit more too it than that which I liked because things are never that simple. Marisa Tomei plays a bride to be who in her young teen years got the name Damon Bradley off of a ouija board. This man, supposedly her soul mate, has been in the back of her mind all these years. And finally, when she is about to be married in a few days a man with the name calls for her fiancee. She jets off to Italy with her sister-in-law, Bonnie Hunt, in search of the mysterious caller. While in Roma she meets Jr, who she initially thinks is her man. After a lot of devious behaviour from Jr's character and a few more suspects, Tomei finally decides what she really wants. When the film first gets going you are led to believe that it will be Tomei traveling round Europe in search of the caller. I liked that it wasn't. It made for much more laughs. Tomei gives a classic performance and I always find it hard to find anything wrong with her. She's a solid actress but has never really stood in the fore front when it comes to attention which I think is nice and kind of refreshing. She's a very underrated actress and it's always a pleasure to watch her. Jr, is as always excellent. I think it's his level of charisma that makes him perfect for any character. He just seems to always pull it off flawlessly. And as always he delivers some brilliant lines in this that will make you laugh till it hurts. Bonnie Hunt and Fisher Stevens made a nice addition to the cast. Their characters are having marriage troubles and their own development throughout the film seemed very unnecessary but lovable. I don't think I would have had the film without it. I think for anyone that likes a good romantic movie, then this would be a pretty good choice. If not, you might wanna consider giving this one a miss.
I've not yet seen The Fugitive yet so I couldn't yet say which one is better although by the way my friends have rated it, it is considerably better than this one. I'm a big fan of Robert Downey Jr. so it was great to see him in this. Because I have nothing to compare this to I'd say it was actually pretty good. Tommy Lee Jones gave a good performance and the plot overall was good. Robert Downey Jr. was great but I have to say I was slightly disappointed when he turned out to be one of the bad guys. Although his character was brilliant. A decent film that is worth at least one watch.
Probably the last good thing that both Steve Martin and Eddie Murphy did. After this, they have produced some really rubbish films and it's a real shame when you look back at what they made before and I just don't understand what went wrong. I'm not much of an Eddie Murphy fan, in fact as a person I hate him and i've never really been fond of his films, but Steve Martin is brilliant and I just wish he would make something that was genuinely funny again because he is an extremely talented comedian. Bowfinger is about a down and out film director played by Martin. He's nearly middle age and is yet to make a good film that people enjoy. When a script about aliens comes his way he sees it as his last chance to achieve what he's wanted since he was a child. The catch is that the film producer, played by Robert Downey Jr, will only agree to it if he can get the biggest action star around, Kit Ramsey, played by Murphy, to take the lead role. Bowfinger tries to get Kit to agree to it but he's not interested. So instead of give up, Bowfinger decides to star Kit in the film by filming him secretly and setting him up into the scenes of the movie. He tells his crew of actors and camera guys that this is just the way that Kit would like to make the film. The premise is bloody stupid. The film they are making sounds like it would be along the lines of Ed Wood style and yet Bowfinger in convinced it is Oscar worthy stuff. The film is daft, but you'll be hard pushed not to laugh at what goes on. Steve Martin is at his funniest and watching this film brings back memories of the good old days when Martin could just make a face and it would floor you. Murphy plays Kit really well. Kit is a paranoid superstar who regularly attends Mindhead meetings. I love that part of the film because it's so obviously a dig at Scientology. And my favourite line in the whole film is where Bowfinger just stops himself short of saying Mindfuck to the head of the company. It's just so expertly done. Murphy also plays the character of Jif who is Kit's double in the film, so Bowfinger can get shots Kit wouldn't do. He's the complete opposite of Kit. He has braces, he wears odd clothes and he talks like he has a mental disability. I've never really liked the fact that Murphy's ego is so large he doesn't believe that it is necessary to have other cast members when he can just play everyone. But in this it works really well and it isn't over played like it is in his other films. Robert Downey Jr only gets about three scenes in total, but I love him so much I had to mention him. His first scene is very good as he's brilliant with the cool, calm and collected characters. Heather Graham plays my favourite characters in the film. She arrives fresh off the bus from Ohio as this little naive country girl and it is just so funny to watch her character develop and reveal who she really is throughout the movie. The way she manipulates all of the people around her is just classic and her last scene/line or whatever is just great writing. Obviously I think you should see this film. If you've not already you should and it'll bring back nice memories of a time when Steve Martin was funny.
I think I better state firstly that I cannot stand Michael Douglas. I just hate him. He annoys me and I don't think he can act. That was pretty much what I thought before watching this. I've changed my mind completely on one of these issues and altered the rest slightly. The one that changed would be I now think he can act. Perhaps he's not the greatest but this really was an excellent performance. It would have to be his best and I don't think he'll achieve it again but I don't care. I still don't like him as a person and this film still doesn't make me want to race out and rent his other films. So other than his acting ability being accept I haven't changed my opinion of him at all. The other brilliant performance came from Tobey Maguire. He's such a young actor and this really was brilliant. Even Katie Holmes impressed me slightly. She played her typical intelligent character but she did it well. I have to mention Robert Downey Jr. because he really did make me laugh every time he was on screen. It's a really good film that should be seen.
When I first watched this film I really wasn't expecting what I was about to experience. I suppose I expected a predictable crime drama with average performances from two actors that were trying to break back into mianstream Hollywood. This wasn't what I got. This film is basicly a film noir without the black and white and without the synthetic lighting. Everything else pretty much follows the film noir theme. I was blown away by the strong performances from Robert Downey Jr. and Val Kilmer as I wasn't exactly expecting it. This was the first of Robert Downey Jr's film I had seen so I wasn't familar with his work and to be quite honest i've fallen in love with his performances right from that first moment. I'd seen a few of Val Kilmer's films and I guess I thought of him as being a bit washed up and past it, completely forgetting about previous brilliant performances. And this film proves it, he isn't past it, he still can act, and to a very high standard at that. Then there is the comic edge in this film because it really does make you laugh. The one liners and the comic narration from Downey Jr. make the whole film a real pleasure to watch. I've seen it thousands of times now and it never seems to get old. I'd recommend it to anyone that likes intelligent comedy and to anyone that likes a good original film. Definatly a must see film.
The brilliant directing is what struck me more about this film. The fact that it was chosen to the shot completely in black and white is quite striking and I happen to think it works really well and seems to give the film a different dimension. I think the black and white part of it might actually have something to say about the film in itself. I liked that all of the scenes were relevant and had something to say about the core issue and plot. It's like the whole film is on one level and nothing else matters, even colour. I don't even think it ages the film visually because all of the shots are very artistic and the tones are perfect. George Clooney does a brilliant job of directing and acting. All the other actors did an excellent job as well. It's a good film that should be seen at least once.
The film description I read of this film didn't exactly prepare me for what I was about to watch. I wanted to see it mainly because it had Robert Downey Jr in it and i've been watching a lot of his movies recently. It is a very weird love story that you can't help but get attached to. Then by the end I was pretty upset purely because what had happened was a true story. Robert Downey Jr. gave a mind blowing performance and even though I don't really like Nicole Kidman's work I would even stretch to say that I enjoyed watching her as well. Harrowing tale of forbidden love. About a women who sees beauty in places where no one else does. Definatly a must see film.
Coming of age film that does the theme better than a lot of the others i've seen. Nothing too over the top and most of it was subtle except the ending which let it down quite a bit. Really great performance from Shia LaBeouf that is yet another example of how much of a great actor he really is. Solid performance from Robert Downey Jr. I'm glad he's getting back into important films because he's a real talent that has had a bit of a hard time. This is a performance he should be proud of. The other supporting actors do a great job as well. I'm not a fan of Channing Tatum and I don't feel that he has proven his talent yet but in this film you do get glimpses of it so it was good to find out that he does have potential. I knid of like the reference of saints to the people that are probably as far removed as possible from the stereotypical saints. Saints are people that do good and although hsi friends and parents are not great role models they always look out for him. I liked that in the end he discovers that he would be who he is today had he not interacted with these people. They made him who he is.
Brilliant film with brilliant performances. It was hard for me to choose between Jake Gyllenhaal and Robert Downey Jr. I couldn't. Both of their performances was excellent. Mark Ruffalo was also very good. I like that even though the film is like two and a half hours long, David Fincher managed to keep you interested throughout without being bored once. It's creepy and even by the end there are questions being asked. I mean, was he actually the killer or was it someone else. Everything did seem to point towards him but they couldn't be sure so maybe he wasn't. A must see film because you need to make up your mind about what really was going on.
It wasn't bad but it wasn't brilliant either. I first have to express my extreme disappointment at the fact that Robert Downey Jr. had exactly three minutes of screen time. I am getting a little fed up with him getting small roles that don't show off his acting skills. I can't wait to see him getting a proper leading role. Eric Bana was alright as was Drew Barrymore although it wasn't her best performance. I like poker films and although this wasn't the best it was average and worth at least one viewing if your into that kind of thing. I also have to mention, just incase anyone cares, that the guy with tits in the movie actually exists. He just people to bet himoutrageous things and he does them. Getting breast implants was one of them.
Brilliant film. I was just blown away by Anton Yelchin's performance. It really was excellent. He's not been in too many films and this was probably his first major role and he was brilliant. The character was really great to watch as well which helped a lot. Troubled and really just wanted to help people even if he didn't always go about it in the right way. I suppose a lot of teenagers could relate to him since a lot of us get quite a bad reputation no matter what we do nowadays. A stunning performance from Robert Downey Jr. as well. His performance stayed consistently good right the way through the film and then he did a scene at the end with a bottle of whiskey and a pistol and I have to say he really was brilliant. I think everyone knows about his drug and alcohol history and it was like he just channeled all of it into what he was doing which make you really feel for his character and him at the same time. Definatly a must see film.
Completely and utterly loved it. I really had high expectations about it as I was absolutely thrilled when I heard Robert Downey Jr would be playing the multi billionaire. I tried really hard not to get my hopes up but I just couldn't help it. Fortunately I didn't need to worry at all. It was everything I hoped it would be and more. Robert Downey Jr was just amazing as I knew he would be. Perfect for the character in so many ways. Jeff Bridges was excellent as the villain. I loved that the plot didn't try to hard to be anything that it wasn't. A lot of superhero films are guilty of this but Iron Man didn't even touch on it. Nothing was over done. They stuck to the story and nothing was unnecessary. So far it's my film of the year and it will be hard to budge, which worries me as the date for the Dark Knight release approaches. This is definatly a must see.
Still can't stand Ben Stiller and once again his performance lets the whole film down. His direction wasn't half bad but at least with that I don't have to see his face and listen to his voice. I'd like to think that he'll stick to directing but I don't think he will. Not unless he can place himself in the lead, which still results in him attempting to act. Really the only thing that makes this film worth watching is Robert Downey Jr. I already knew the guy could act, but just recently he's been breaking back into the mainstream which has allowed him to really prove his worth as an actor. His character in this is just pure genius. Jack Black is also very funny. Throughout the film his character is battling with his drug addiction in just the funniest way possible. Jack Black is amazing when it comes to comedy but he's not a character actor, he just plays himself in different situations, in the same way Ben Stiller does. Fortunately Black is a funnier person and isn't bloody irritating. Jay Baruchel is slowly breaking into quite big comedy films in supporting roles and he is very good. He always catches my eye whenever I see him. Hopefully we'll get to see him in a more starring role soon to see what he's really capable of. The cameos in this film are pretty prestigious. Steve Coogan was brilliant and his performance isn't about comedy it's quite serious and he works with it really well. Tom Cruise makes me want to stab my eyes out. The scene at the end was just plain weird. It may have been funny had it not been for the fact that Cruise is mental. The last sequence is pretty good with Jackson hugging the gay guy from that boy band and baruchel with jennifer love hewitt. Really funny stuff. Have to mention the soundtrack as well as it pretty much rocked. So I didn't completely hate it and certain aspects of it were impressive. I'm giving it four stars, which I think is perhaps a little too generous but I think compared to the usual bull shit that Stiller spills out, this wasn't half bad. It's worth checking out even if only the once.
