magnificent samurai epic and one of the finest films ever made. not only a classic but an endlessly entertaining one. everyone MUST SEE this film; no excuses
2
Harakiri (1964,  Unrated)
3
Samurai Rebellion (1967,  Unrated)
Samurai Rebellion
excellent drama about a conflict between a shogun and his vassals. mifune is great as the convention bound samurai who takes a stand.
4
Ran (1985,  R)
Ran
kurosawa's epic king lear with some of the most beautiful cinematography ever. saturated in amazing colors
5
Rashômon (Rashomon) (In the Woods) (1951,  Unrated)
6
Kagemusha (Shadow Warrior) (The Double) (1980,  PG)

Ghost Dog - The Way of the Samurai
my favorite jarmusch by a long shot. gangsters and samurai: too fucking cool
9
Yojimbo (1961,  Unrated)
Yojimbo
yes it's better than a fistful of dollars :D i just wish i'd seen it first! love the soundtrack too. kurosawa successfully sued leone for 15% of the worldwide gross and made more from the lawsuit than he did on this film apparently
10
Sanjuro (1962,  PG-13)
Sanjuro
i enjoyed this as much as yojimbo. it's a whole lot of fun. mifune is born to play comedy i think. such a ham but you can't take your eyes off him
11
The Sword of Doom (1966,  Unrated)
The Sword of Doom
outstanding! this tale of a psychotic samurai ends rather abruptly as it was meant to be pt. 1 of a trilogy. we can only imagine how that would have turned out but pt. 1 is pretty freakin fantastic. awesome performance by tatsuya nakadai, many incredible fight scenes; the sword is the soul! i wish i could give it more stars :((
12
The Hidden Fortress (1960,  Unrated)
13
Kumonosu Jô (Throne of Blood) (Macbeth) (1957,  Unrated)
Kumonosu Jô (Throne of Blood) (Macbeth)
kurosawa's macbeth has just the right atmosphere and mood. mifune is a bit hyperdramatic in the finale but his wife is dead creepy
14
Lone Wolf and Cub - Sword of Vengeance (Kozure Ôkami: Kowokashi udekashi tsukamatsuru) (1972,  Unrated)
Lone Wolf and Cub - Sword of Vengeance (Kozure Ôkami: Kowokashi udekashi tsukamatsuru)
the first in the series of lone wolf and cub, the story of a shogun's executioner forced to flee with his infant son after the murder of his wife. he takes work as a hired assassin, with baby cart in tow, until he can seek revenge. lots of fun, blood and child endangerment!
15
Zatoichi The Outlaw (1967,  Unrated)

The Blind Swordsman: Zatoichi (2003,  R)

Lady Snowblood (Lady Snowblood: Blizzard from the Netherworld) (Shurayukihime)

Lone Wolf and Cub - Baby Cart to Hades (Kozure Ôkami: Shinikazeni mukau ubaguruma)
aka 'perambulator against the winds of death!' the third film in lone wolf and cub series is a bit weaker than the first two but it's almost made up for by the spectacular climax in which ogami itto defeats a whole army with his baby cart from a bond film
35
Lone Wolf and Cub - Baby Cart at the River Styx (Kozure Ôkami: Sanzu no kawa no ubaguruma) (2003,  Unrated)
Lone Wolf and Cub - Baby Cart at the River Styx (Kozure Ôkami: Sanzu no kawa no ubaguruma)
the saga of freelance assassin ogami itto and his young son daigoro continues in bloody style. in this episode, daigoro is kidnapped by ninjas and thrown from a burning ship! there's a clan of badass females, a guy with a freddy kruger hand and the final showdown in the sand is particularly thrilling. just as much fun as the first, with some touching scenes between father and son as well. i guess it's the woman in me that makes me wanna yell: hey, watch that kid! lol
36
Lone Wolf and Cub - Baby Cart in Peril (Kozure Ôkami: Oya no kokoro ko no kokoro) (1972,  Unrated)
37
Samurai Jack - The Premiere Movie (2001,  Unrated)

Zoku Miyamoto Musashi: Ichijôji no Kettô (Samurai II: Duel at Ichijoji Temple) (Swords of Doom)
the continuing adventures of crazy takezo, now an accomplished samurai. not quite as good as part 1 tho lovely to look at. all the women are after musashi but he prefers his sword :p
40
Miyamoto Musashi (Samurai 1: Musashi Miyamoto) (The Legend of Musashi) (Master Swordsman) (1954,  Unrated)
Miyamoto Musashi (Samurai 1: Musashi Miyamoto) (The Legend of Musashi) (Master Swordsman)
good film. see mifune defeat 50 swordsman using only a stick! ...is it just me or is he still playing the fool from seven samurai? pt 1 of a trilogy...so that's 3 i'm in the midst of lol. this one covers takezo's origin and the beginning of his training as a samurai
