War of the Worlds 4.0 Stars
This film is scary. Tim Robbins is scary. Tom Cruises smile is scary. Scientology is scary!
I love that whenever the "walkers" attack, Speilberg samples a note from Close Encounters.
Some of the set peices are breathtaking. The scene were the Aliens come out of the ground is fantastic. With every one getting vaporized. Great retelling of a classic!

Forbidden Planet (1956,  G)
Forbidden Planet 4.0 Stars
A real classic sci-fi film. The sets and effect are worth the price of admission alone. Its possibly the coolest looking sci-fi film from that time, thanks to it being the most expensive film at the time. A great script and some fun performances from Leslie Neilsen and Walter Pidgeon. Forbidden Planet also introduces the iconic Robby The Robot.

Solyaris (Solaris) (1972,  Unrated)
Solyaris (Solaris) 4.0 Stars
Arguably a hard film to follow. The slow as moleasass paceing and the droll score dont help things. If i hadnt seen and LOVED the remake i would of been picking my brain off of the floor. But the cinematography is AMAZING! With in the first few minutes, i was completely floored by some of the amazing visuals. And they just continue on through out the film. Like 2001, this is a thinking mans Sci-Fi film. Atmospheric and the tone is eerie at times. High class Sci-fi.

An extremly fun film. And probably the last really good Carpenter film. Roddy Piper is perfect in his role as the Blue collar bum. Great idea and perfect execution of the idea, even if the aliens look a bit silly.

This is a fucking great film! Visually stunning, an incredible score from Philip Glass and top notch performances from all involved. Espeacially Paul Giamatti, who is fast becoming one of my very favorite actors to watch.
Iam sure there are comparisons to The Prestige...but there really is no comparison. They are two totally different films, other than the fact that they both deal with magic.

Serenity (2005,  PG-13)
Serenity 4.5 Stars
First off, if youve never seen an episode of Firefly...skip the film and check out the series. It only lasted 13 or 14 episodes. I caught them on a Firefly marathon the sci-fi channel ran a couple weeks ago. And the only reason i did was because i tried to watch Serenity before but didnt get the characters or story. And thank god for that, because i was hooked after the first episode. The characters were all lovable and funny.
Its amazing this film even came about from a very short lived series. And its a shame also that there probably wont be another film in the future. I LOVED the show. It kicked ass on so many levels. But i can see why people didnt catch on.
The film Serenity is fucking great! Its a fantastic tribute to the show and characters we fell in love with. Serenity never compromises what made the show and the characters so great. Its like the best episode...only 2 hrs long. The story fills in alot of gaps the show left open and reintroduces the Reavers, zombie like cannibals that'll chase you down faster than a bowel movment after drinking the tap water in Mexico! I think they made one very short appearence on the show. But they are a major force to be reckoned with in the film.
If what happens to several of the characters isnt sad enough, knowing this is the last time ill get to be with the Firefly crew almost brings a tear to my eye.

The Prestige (2006,  PG-13)
The Prestige 4.5 Stars
Christopher Nolan once again crafts a great film full of twists and turns. Some really fun parallels between the two magicans and Tesla and Einstein. David Bowie as Tesla was really fun to watch, and he gave a great performance too.
Nolan has fast become one of my favorite directors and the Prestige is another fine film from this brilliant guy. Sure some of the big twists are not too hard to figure out but he still manages to inject a good amount of creepy atmospheric scenes and gets some really brilliant performances out of Jackman and Johansson. (Bale and Cain are ALWAYS good so Nolan doesnt get to take the credit for them.)

under rated. I really like this one. It sucks the Weaver made the makers of this kill off the surviving characters from the 2nd one though. The tagline said the bitch is back....i think they were hinting at Weaver.

The Deadly Spawn (1983,  R)
The Deadly Spawn 3.5 Stars
Heres another one of those low budget gems that was made with all heart. The Deadly Spawn is a great little sci-fi horror flick. The puppets are great and remind me of giant monster penises. The scene were the baby spawn terrorize the group of old woman is great.
I love films like this. Sure its low budget and the acting isnt Brando but fuck anyone who hates on that type of shit. This is a film made with love and care from a true fan of the genre. Its pure homage to the great B films of the 50's and 60's.

Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope (1977,  PG)
Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope 5.0 Stars
Star Wars made hollywood take more notice on the action and special effects aspect of filmmaking and less on the quality of story. and it marked the end of a great era in great filmmaking because of its influence! But....its one of the greatest sci-fi adventure films ever made. Incredible and imaginative story. iam a total geek for this film. I dearly miss the days of my youth playing with my Star Wars action figures.
The film is definatly dated now, but it still holds that magical appeal for me!
