Sunshine (2007,  R)
Sunshine
One of the better Sci-Fi movies I have seen lately. Not great, but trys to stay true to actual science and actual problems encountered in space travel.
2
The Black Hole (1979,  PG)
The Black Hole
I have to get this on Netflix - I loved it when I was a kid.
3
The Running Man (1987,  R)

Signs (2002,  PG-13)
Signs
Everyone has seen this thing by now so I don't feel bad saying...WATER??? Shamalamalicious must be outhisdamnmind. Aliens that have mastered faster than light space travel done in by water? Or getting trapped in the closet? And people actually think this is plausible even in a fantasy movie? It's laughable that my nephew could hold off the entire invasion with a water weenie! Well you did it again McKnight Shamalamadouchebag(TM). I really enjoyed the first half of the movie, maybe the first 3/4. Then you go and jack it up again. Maybe you could direct the first half of your movies and then hand the reins to a finisher...Like Ron Jeremy or Peter North. At least we would get a happy ending!

Runaway (1984,  PG-13)
Runaway
Decent 80's Sci-Fi Cop movie with Tom Selleck's Mustache and Gene Simmon's tongue. Not bad, really liked it when I was 9. I remember there were cool little robotic spiders.

Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979,  G)
Star Trek: The Motion Picture
It's life, captain, but not as we know it. After a decade off, the original crew returns for this 1979 epic hit. Remeber this was 2 years after Star Wars came out and Trek wanted to be distinctly different. This movie didn't have much in the way of action, was kinda funny, and spent most of the movie trying to figure out what the big bad alien space disturbance was. It was basically a kinda space epic. Fans loved it at the time and the special effects were also ground breaking at the time. Decent Trek movie and worth watching.

Right, now that we've got them just where they want us.

Sphere (1998,  PG-13)
Sphere
Fairly average movie, as usual with most books turned into movies, so many plot points are left out and generally screw up the movie. May have thought it better if I hadn't read the book first.

I, Robot (2004,  PG-13)
I, Robot
Story of a robot with a soul. I was impressed with this movie. Still haven't watched a movie with Will Smith where he doesn't give his role his best effort. I liked him here with Tom Brady's Baby Mama. I don't know how well it follows Isaac Asminov's book, but it makes me want to check it out! CGI and Special Effects are a large part of this futuristic movie and seem to be flawlessly adapted to the live action.

Knowing (2009,  PG-13)
Knowing
Wow, I rarely find a movie that I had wished I seen sooner, but this is it! I think I was mainly reluctant because of Nic Cage who had been so horrible in his recent movies that I was putting this off. Big Mistake, Cage is really good here and doesn't look as much like Skeletor or the Grim Reaper or act like he was actually dead.

Nic and his son find that the letter of numbers pulled from his sons elementary schools 50 year time capsule contains dates and locations of the greatest world tragedies of the past 50 years. Nic becomes understandibly just a bit concerned as there are 3 more on the list happening over the next week.

Really enjoyed this one - best Sci-fi movie I have seen in recent memory.

Babylon A.D. (2008,  PG-13)
Babylon A.D.
Really enjoyed this futuristic movie in the vein of City of Men with more action. Not as dramatic but better action and special effects.

Vin plays his typical tough ass, selfish, mercenary with honor kind of samurai character getting the cute, young Aurora through Russia & Canada and into the United States to New York.

The movie focuses on the possible uncaring future. The lack of value for the typical human life, refugee camps, and an elite few a$$holes making decisions and killing on whims. People eating dogs & cats as a main food staple, human depravity, cloning of humans and animals. A dark vision that Reddick..er Toorop needs to navigate with Michelle Yeoh to get their charge safely to the supposed haven of New York.

Typical over the top unbelievable fight scenes but what the hell. The kind of movie i like where the bad guy gets it in the end...but you have to imagine it because either they were hoping for a sequel or ran out of money.

Event Horizon (1997,  R)
Event Horizon
Creepy, suspenseful, sci-fi flick. Made me jump several times. Basically a sci-fi horror flick. Very Enjoyable.

District 9 (2009,  R)
District 9
Very different than I expected. the story revolves around a high level executive in a company: Multi-National United (MNU) that is contracted to provide or regulate the welfare of the "Prawns", a stranded extraterrestrial race. MNU treats the Prawns much in the same way the Jews in Warsaw were treated by the Nazis. The Prawns are placed in a guarded/fenced shack city inside Johannesburg, South Africa where their supposedly damaged ship hovers above the city. Anyway, the conditions are atrocious. The prawns scavange for food/shelter are treated as sub human and their lives are considered cheap. Anyway, the MNU is contracted to evict the Prawns from District 9 inside of Johannesburg to District 10 some distance out of town. The jackass main character is forced to see things from the Prawns view and this movie revolves around him.

This movie seemed more about big corrupt companies & big corrupt government along with human/alien rights/atrocities and what lengths humans would go to gain power and wealth.

Overall OK, the Prawns and prawn technology/special effects blend flawlessly with the live action. There are a few funny scenes but most of the movie is semi-boring. You may want to see this on the big screen, but wait until it hits the cheap theatres in a few weeks. No rush on this one.

Gremlins (1984,  PG)
Gremlins
Greatest Movie Ever.....when I was 10. I didn't remember being scared at all but laughing at all the Uh-Oh's from Giz and Ka-Ka's from Stripe and the bad gremlins. I loved how Zach's mom took out 3 gremliins with the blender, a knife, and the freaking microwave while the high school science teacher was made a bitch by one of the little guys.\

Just watched this again and it doesn't hold up as well as I thought it would. Still enjoyed it and believe it is worth a rewatch by everyone, just not as much fun as when I was young. Oh, one thing I did appreciate more..Phoebe Cates, who also took my boobginity in Fast Times at Ridgemont High. Is that on Youtube, I am checking.

The Dark Is Rising (,  Unrated)
The Dark Is Rising
Fair, not great movie. Previews made it look 10 times better than it was. But I guess thats what they are supposed to do right?
15
The 13th Warrior (1999,  R)
The 13th Warrior
This is a retelling of the Beowulf/Grendel story as reimagined by Michael Crichton. As usual the Book really outperformed the movie. Although it is not bad and worth a look. Recommend the book more though.

Don't expect any Oscar worth performances but "My name... is Antonio Banderas" does alright in his role.

Pandorum (2009,  R)
Pandorum
Too many questions, not enough answers. I like movies that are more science Fact, this is definitely fiction and many portions are totally unbelievable.

The beginning of the movie with the pitch black corridors and unknown antagonists worked very well to draw the viewer in and get engrossed in the film. From that point...as the convoluted truth is learned, the story becomes more confusing and many plot points are either unneeded, convoluted, or just plain stupid.

(Warning: Semi-spoilers)

Just a few examples. Supposedly by 2157 or whatever year it is, there are 45+ Billions of people on earth right? 10,000 people are selected for this century ship/ generation ship/long voyage. You think there would be a pretty strict selection process, right? Well apparently in the future there will still be agriculture specialists of indeterminate nationality that can't speak English! However, he can move like an acrobat and seems to be trained as a ninja. Was this the 22nd century's version of affirmative action? Should I be keeping an eye on that guy mowing my lawn? Is there a super secrect sect of gardening warriors I don't know about? This could be the focus of Dan Browns and Tom Hanks next book/movie deal!

In addition, in this movie, German scientists are incredibly hot, under the age of 25, and are also trained in serious hand to hand combat, good enough at least, to be able to take down a ships officer (which is the one that is plausible to be trained) twice without any trouble and making him cry in the process.

Anyway, No way everyone on this ship is not either a genius or the best of the best in their field of work.

The whole timeline throughout the movie is skewed and confusing. The bad guys are fairly interesting and the psychobabble is stupid. Evidently the human race has developed faster than light tech & a way to send real time transmissions at faster than light. ALL using a nuclear reactor. HMMMM. Yet they explain nothing about it. they do spend maybe 30 seconds describing what is supposed to be the major plot point, this Pandorum syndrome...whatever that is. I wonder if they had Duck Dodgers in one of those cryotubes?

Dennis Quaid, what happened to you? Not that your acting was bad, but why take this role? Is there a rule that as you get older you have to take whatever you can get? Peach has that rule with women, but you are an accredited actor with movies such as Innerspace & GI Joe to your credit....wait, just answered my own question...Never mind.

Soylent Green (1973,  PG)
Soylent Green
For those of you who like old science fiction movies, this is one of the better ones. Charlton Heston plays his typical flawed hero type as a futuristic detective investigating the death of a high falutin executive and learns some nice stuff about the nations food supply.
