District 9 (2009,  R)
District 9
news footage tellls us, after years of a alien space craft sitting over joanesberg south africa, eventually dying aliens are found on board, and eventually being refugees in district 9, just below ship, where alien inhabidents are housed and detained, and againafter many years of crime and violence to city, its to be moved out of town, out of sight and out of mind, its here where, the agency involved in keeping control, are to go in and start proceeding with movement, and one officer, newly in charge, getting more than he bargained foe, when events go wrong, and he must go on the run from, goverment agency, and geting in with the people, i,e the aliens, he once controlled. this film is a breath of science fiction fresh air, like other film,, moon, this year, another low budget film, sticking finger up to hollywood. neil blomkamps direction is amazing, mixing first person news reports with film, some terrific action throughout, real energy to it, a great performance from sharlto copley in a main role, hes a great watch, the aliens are superb here, fitting in perfectly, even in harsh sunlight, top work there, the violence is on show too, people exploding from alien technology is a joy to watch, and with quite a bit of action throughgout, never a dull moment, even the robot suit, fight towards end, will give people getting bored with bays transformsrs, something to cheer, a great story throughout, and visually inpressive, andeven though its so oviously the apartait troubles transplanted to aliens, it doesent spoil, and a relevent film to watch, the film also leaves a lot of questions, not only to what goverments are doing, even though the dealings with alien weaponry is a big plot point. and what will happen next, heres to district 10 i say

RocknRolla (2008,  R)
RocknRolla
guy richie is back aparantly, but for me when he does gangland england, hes never been away, yes swept away was a disaster, but not a film he should have made, but lock stock, snatch, were classics, and revolver, is just not apreciated, and shows that when david lynch confuses people, he is praised, richie does it hes slated, whatever revolver was it was certainly stylish. now with rocknrolla were back in london, but id say more the london of producing partners mathew vaughns film,,,layer cake, than snatch, but certainly these charactors pop up and are vital to plot, again from the get go were in richies world, a great voice over which sets the scene perfectly, and introducing charactors. again a lot of criss crossing of charactors throughout. and comes together quite nicely when the end credits near, gerald butler in a way replacing vacant jason statham, is a typical richie charactor, who leads the plot along with various others, including bad businessman played by tom wilkinson, superb comedy and edgy moments combined throughout, with the plot running along smoothly, great score also, and violence, great, looking at this, theres more in the works, following charactors created in this film, especially the so called rocknrolla of the piece, cant wait

Watchmen (2009,  R)
Watchmen
never read novel, and maybe never will, but they say its best graphic novel of all time, i really enjoyed it, it was very god, never dull, it runs along nicely, some gret action, violence throughout, and with great scenes set to music throughout( the title sequence is amazing) dr manhatten is well done, even though he shows his stuff more times than ewen mcgregor, and jackie earle is the best thing in this as the charactor rorsarch, there are some dull bits scattered throughout, but never spoils it, and the third act with the villain revealing it self, not to great, but his thinking, i liked if a bit extreame, will there be more watchmen, who knows, but after this im hooked
4
WALL-E (2008,  G)
WALL-E
another adition to pixar and a great story with both charm, emotion and fun, the first half both epic and spielbergian, and the 2nd kid friendly monsters inc style, so family entertainment all round
5
Star Trek (2009,  PG-13)
Star Trek
im not a star trek fan, and seen maybe 2 next generation episodes, but seen all the films, all enjoyable to some degree, but was very much looking forward to this, firstly because its a reboot, and jj abrams was involved, i knew hed do something with it, and it is very entertaining , from spok and kirks early days to the gathering on the enterprise, its all done well, the younger cast taking on the iconic roles do really well, and all gel great together, chris pine, as kirk, i liked but zachary quinto as spok was superb throughout. the story is interesting and keeps you gripped, and lots of action to keep those starwars fans at bay, this film certainly gives the starwars prequels a kick up the ass, as to how they should have been done
6
Gran Torino (2009,  R)
Gran Torino
eastwood plays a grumpy old man in his retirment years and we se him as he becomes a widow, he grumbles and moans at his neighbours who are korean and not american, and grumbles some more at his two sons who really just care for him, and the grumbles some more at the local priest who really thinks clint should confess in church, its when he gets tangled up with his neighbours that his life changes and he sees what other people, if a little diferent, can offer, but its a very dangerous pathy he can get into, this is definatly dirty harry retired in my eyes, ven though its not, he really doesent like whats going on around him, and eastwood geting old here playing old well, he still has what it takes, and as usuall directing also, the story is simple yet heartwarming, and runs along smoothly, predictably maybe, but eastwood always watchable, his racist oldman may come off funny someimes, and his roans throughout, whenever something happens, takes getting used to, but its never dull, yes it could be a little more gritty and less soppy, but a good film here
7
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (2008,  PG-13)
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
david fincher and pitt team up for there 3rd effort, it may seem like a forest gump type tale, but its engageing throughout, and the story of a newborn, who is old in age and condition, growing backwards as we hear his story, is always engageing, sad and epic in its look, pitt, who im sure will get a oscar nomination for his work is watchable as usuall, and his work from very old to a young man shines, the make up and visual effects for old age is terrific, but always relighing on pitts acting, fincher whos gone for a sort of fairytale here, and in a way a departure, is on form, once again his work looks superb, a great eye for detail, cate blanchet also bringing something to the table as the love of his life, a film sad at times, and funny and tthought provoking.
8
Slumdog Millionaire (2008,  R)
Slumdog Millionaire
not the feegood film the poster makes out, but quite gritty in places, as awe watch a young man getting close to his fortune on who wants to be a millionaire in india, and his fllashbacks showing how he got here from his childhood to the love of his life, danny boyle is fast becoming the english scorsese, again like trainspotting, and others showing a great sence of music to images, and his pace always pleasing, acting is great all round, it does drag in places especially towards the typical 3rd act, but stick with it and theres something to be had
9
Ghost Town (2008,  PG-13)
Ghost Town
hey joany, heres your review

ricky gervaise is a joy to watch, in a typical american romantic comedy, bringing his brilliant english wit, that has come to great afect in his tv smashes the office and extras, the gervaise we know and love, is all over this, this film a;lso reminds me of a lot of woody allen inot just its newyork setting but wit and charm, again especially in gervaise and of course greg kinneer, the plot, which sees gervaise as a drntist, dying, for 7 minutes and able to se dead people, and there need for him to help them, and kinneer as a former husband to tori leoni, needing to finish his business, yes the plot does get sentimental especially towards the end, and typical romantic comedy rules kick in, but gervaise holds it all together very well, he shows here that he can pick his roles, aparently hes turned down woody allen, maybe allen will see this and come knocking again
10
Coraline (2009,  PG)
Coraline
saw this in 3d, and well made, the 3d adds something, but story is exitingand agreat childrens story, great music also, adding to the story
11
You Don't Mess with the Zohan (2008,  PG-13)
You Don't Mess with the Zohan
better than i expected, adam sandler vehicle, sandler has created a interesting and funny charactor, with his silky smooth ways, as a mossad agent bored with being a trained killer and wants to take up hair dressing, so fakes his death and heads to newyork. the jokes do come fast, and with sandlers creation, some great moments throughout, bringing a mix of sexual and current event jokes, especially the middle eastern conflict, and great support from rob sneider, and john turtorro, bringing something to the table,
12
Seven Pounds (2008,  PG-13)
Seven Pounds
will smith isa good watch, and story is engageing, as a man with a mysterious plan in motion, as helping 7 people is on the cards, not anything great but smith certainly brings something to the table
13
Angels & Demons (2009,  PG-13)
Angels & Demons
silly but exiting to watch, as hanks returnsthis time,a chase against time tostop the vatican city from blowing up, ewen mcgregor adds a lot to this film, even though hes been slated for his acent
14
The Happening (2008,  R)
The Happening
another shyalaman atempt at a genre, and what hes done here is a b movie paranoia film from the 50s, transplanted to modern day post 911 america, and for me it works to a degree, its also very funny, wether intentional, or not, some funny moments here, warlberg amoung the most jokes going on, the concept, wind making people killing them selves is ridiculas but comes off bettere than it should, in a typical shyamalan way, like the village, lady in the water, and signs his lesser efforts, its a twist on the genre, not a massive summer blockbuster effects film, more charator based, with trees blowing, and it works, another good, not exellent efort from shyalaman
15
Max Payne (2008,  PG-13)
Max Payne
wahlberg is moody and thats it,and has fluffy warm flashbacks of his dead wife, based on the computer game, ive been told payne only has one expression, but we all know thats what he always does, some nice action throughout, and very loud, newyork looks rainy and gloomy, but plot isnt to interestin for me, constantine was better

Friday the 13th (2009,  R)
Friday the 13th
not a remake of the first, and certainly not bringing anything new along, yes there some nice deaths but it all falls into predictable mayhem, ad when the filmmakers seem stuck, leave charactors live when oviously they would be killed by jason in a instant, but i guess al horrors fall to this
