Lady in the Water 3.5 Stars
Like some of his other works Mr Shyamalan manages to tell a fairly original story with a deeper underlying message. This time its how people should be responsible for each other and the responsibility of the actions we make. This movie also adds a nice element of suggesting that all people have an element of have a greater purpose. What I would have liked to see is Paul Giamtti's character of the doctor being explored more... as references to his dead family are made but never explained. The little in-jokes on how every "original" movie has a similar plot. The movie is well written but probally the worst directed of all Shyamalan's movies. Not bad either if you want to see a lot of Bryce Dallas Howard's legs or being sat in a shower.... unfortunately I expected more involvement with her. The movie states at the beginining that this falls into the genre of "bedtime" story but by the end I couldn't help but feel it becomes a little satirized.

The Happening (2008,  R)
The Happening 3.5 Stars
Frigging England where the hell is my Hairpin to the throat and Lawnmower scenes?! On the frigging cutting room floor that's where! Now I'm stuck wondering if I actually enjoyed it or not... damn you Shyamalan!!!! Grrrrrrrrrr
If you're from the UK look up the uncut trailer on Youtube and see what you're missing!
Remove the violence from this movie and you are left with a shell! The whole concept of this movie is to be a "B-Movie" with a message and without it's shock capacity the movie looses all its potential.
If Mr M Night Shyamalan wanted his audiences to take on board the message of "being a bit more considerate to the environment" he should have scared the fuck out of them!!!
In all honesty the movie works on paper. The story is really good and totally original, this is Shyamalan we're talking about after all. However, for this movie to work as a thriller, it needed a hell of a lot of something else... but somehow manages to hold its own.... just... for the love of God I don't know how!?
Think Night of the Living Dead... but without the zombies.... and bad acting.
The acting is in exact parallel to the cheap performances you get from your typical "B-movie" and it didn't feel natural at all! Wahlberg has exactly the same tone and mannerisms for every scene and Deschanel thinks she can carry a performance on going doe-eyed and sitting pretty.
It's a shame because there is a good supporting cast known for being in "B-movies" that are totally overlooked, for the ten mins he was in this movie Leguizamo shines.
It just doesn't work.... and yet... does?
Something about this movie keeps you watching....
So many people have been slating the hell out of this movie, it feels future generations are going to know it as a movie so bad... it's good.
I pray that a uncut version comes out on DVD otherwise this movie is going to really loose its fighting chance... even for its potential to become a cult movie.
Oh... and the plant's did it.
After all Shyamalan's past successes.....What Happend eh???
