Lady in the Water (2006, PG-13)
Like some of his other works Mr Shyamalan manages to tell a fairly original story with a deeper underlying message. This time its how people should be responsible for each other and the responsibility of the actions we make. This movie also adds a nice element of suggesting that all people have an element of have a greater purpose. What I would have liked to see is Paul Giamtti's character of the doctor being explored more... as references to his dead family are made but never explained. The little in-jokes on how every "original" movie has a similar plot. The movie is well written but probally the worst directed of all Shyamalan's movies. Not bad either if you want to see a lot of Bryce Dallas Howard's legs or being sat in a shower.... unfortunately I expected more involvement with her. The movie states at the beginining that this falls into the genre of "bedtime" story but by the end I couldn't help but feel it becomes a little satirized. |
